MOKOPANE - The three suspects in the Charles Mgidi murder case appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate Court on Tuesday only to have the case postponed to 19 August for further investigation and the formulation of the indictment.

Charles Mgidi, owner of a driving school in Mahwelereng, died shortly after he was shot at a filling station in town earlier this year. Desmond Machaba, Samuel Matjila and Patric Sekhu were arrested and face trial after their bail application was denied and the appeal thereof dismissed.

Magistrate André van der Kooi said that the murder case needs to be expedited after the state suggested the case to be postponed

Mgidi murder: case postponedfor three months. The state prosecutor cited that one of the accused is still to ap-pear in court for another murder case - that of the late Gideon Fatana who was shot and killed at his home in Mokopane earlier this year.

The suspects’ defense attorney argued that the case is overdue, Van der Kooi agreed and an earlier date was given.

The Mogalakwena Residents Associa-tion (MRA) and concerned community members marched to the Magistrate Court where they handed over a memorandum of demands to the provincial commissioner of the police and the chief magistrate of the Mokopane Magistrate Court. The memo-randum requests that evidence must not being compromised in any way and for a maximum sentence to be considered.

Four men was found inside the yard of the home twice in less than a week. Last week the resident of the home woke up one night and found four unknown men on his property. “Luckily I woke up in time and was able to chase the men away,” he said.

Much to his shock, he woke up on Mon-day night only to find what he suspects may

Residents urged to take safety measuresbe same four men in his yard.

Dries Basson, the DA councillor living in the area, says nothing was taken during these incidents. “We followed the tracks of the trespassers but unfortunately we lost it at the plots behind the houses.”

Basson urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious persons in these areas and to inform the local CPF and po-lice if they find unknown people on their premises.

WITPOORT – Two suspects were arrested after they attempted to rob a business last Sunday.

According to warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale SAPS the two suspects allegedly went to a business owned by a foreign national and requested to buy airtime.

The police reports that while the business owner was busy with the transaction one of the suspects allegedly sprayed him with pepper spray.

The business owner then called his landlord who notified members of the community to come and assist them in ap-prehending the suspects.

MOKOPANE - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid a criminal charge last week against the acting municipal manager of the Mo-galakwena Municipality last week for de-liberately contravening the National Water Act as well as the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).

Puledi Selepe, the acting municipal

Water pollution - a ticking time bomb?manager for the Mogalakwena Municipal at the time, faced a criminal investigation after violating the National Water Act 36 of 1998 sections 151 (1) (i) and (2), the (NEMA) National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 sections 49 (A) (1)(e) and (f), section 24 of the constitution as well as a directive of the municipal finance manage-ment act, says the DA in Limpopo. Selepe, however, is replaced by Peter Makondo at a

special council meeting that was held last week Friday.

Member of Parliament (MP) Beyers Smit and DA ward coun-cilor Thapelo Pooe accompanied Northern News to an area in Dudu Madisha street where sewage is overflowing from a sewage pipe into the Dorps

River. The pipe has been cut open by the municipality to overflow when the system is overloaded, said Smit. Test results for E Coli, an infectious and life-threatening virus was tested positive a year ago at the same spot.

“The DA has made calls to the municipal-ity since 2010 to fix the sewerage system. This is deliberate pollution of our rivers which pose a health risk and harm to our environ-ment,” says a concerned Pooe. He added that this caused environmental pollution and degradation while failing to take reasonable measures to address this crisis.

This issue has been brought under the attention of MP Leon Basson serving on the water and sanitation portfolio. Basson indi-cated that he is busy with the problem.

The municipality did not provide feedback by time of going to press.

Thapelo Pooe, DA ward councillor disgustingly points to the sewage pipe that currently overflows into the Dorps River.

LEPHALALE – Two suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Friday.

During a crime prevention operation at the Lephalale-Vaalwater T-junction the police searched a vehicle and confiscated plasma TV’s, cell phones and two unlicensed fire-arms with ammunition.

According to warrant officer Frans Mo-koena of the Lephalale police it was later es-tablished that the cell phones were allegedly stolen at Kutse Lodge in Lephalale.

The two suspects, Lucas Popotai and Obed Tomkai, appeared at the Lephalale Magistrate court on Monday and the case was postponed to Friday for a formal bail application.

Roadblock yields success

Eight casual employees in the Expanded Public Works Programme were tasked with clearing the main roads, illegal dumping spots and internal streets in Shongoane 1, 2 and 3; Mokuruanyane and Seleka. In Lephalale members of the hawkers committee joined the team in clearing the hawker stalls area behind Boxer. The municipality visited each stall to ensure that vendors are in possession of informal trading permits as required by the municipal bylaw.
