LEPHALALE – A young teenage boy, Enrico Smith (15), passed away in a motor cycle accident earlier this month. His devastated mother now says she needs to know what happened on the night of his accident, but cannot find the answers.

On 3 July, Enrico drove away from his house in Silver Charms to go and greet his friends. “I pleaded with him not to go because I had an uneasy feeling the whole day,” remembers his mother, Claretta Slater.

Enrico was driving in Palala Street when he crossed Walter Sisulu and collided with a silver Fiat Uno. A witness claims that he saw the driver of the Uno fleeing his vehicle before the police arrived. Police is investi-gating a case of culpable homicide and have traced the owner of the vehicle.

The night of the accident Claretta’s daughter, Jazzlyn, phoned Claretta from the scene and informed her that Enrico was hit by a speeding vehicle. “When I arrived at the accident scene I looked at Jazzlyn holding Enrico and thought that he was still alive,” Claretta says.

She explains that the paramedics at the scene told her that her son was dead, but ads that she could not accept it. She pleased with them to try and resuscitate him. “I just couldn’t accept that he was gone and there was nothing that they could do, but afterwards, when they explained the procedure to me, I could see that they really

Claretta says that she has been in con-stant contact with the investigating officer of Enrico’s case, but says she is not satisfied with the investigation at all. “They did not do toxicology tests on the driver of the other vehicle,” she says.

Claretta, Enrico and Jazzlyn moved to Lephalale two years ago after the death of her husband, Parrish.

“It was just too difficult to stay in East London with all the memories of my husband and we wanted to make a fresh, new start,” Claretta says, adding that it is now too painful to stay in the house which they called home for the past two years.

She says Enrico was an avid motor cycle driver with a passion for life. “His love for motorbikes dates to back when he was a little boy.”

“I bought him his first proper two-wheeler when he turned eight,” Claretta remembers.

She wants to thank everybody in Lephalale, her pastor and her colleagues at Medupi, for their support during this difficult time. “I would like to especially the Lephalale Bikers’ Club who took me back to the accident scene and helped me plant a remem-brance cross for Enrico.”

Even though Claretta still misses her son every time she hears a motorbike, she says that

she does not consider biking to be a dangerous pastime. “I know my son loved his bike and I am so happy that I could give him all these happy memo-ries.”

Foreign shops are open targets police warnMartie Pretorius ([email protected])

LIMPOPO - Mokopane police have advised foreign-owned shopkeepers to stick to their normal business hours as they are increas-ingly targeted in incients of violent robbe-ries - especially when business hours are being stretched.

Research shows the willingness of many foreign merchants to work anywhere, includ-ing run-down townships, has further exposed them to potential dangers.

Although South African business people envious of the foreign entrepreneurial suc-cess have been blamed for instigating the hostilities, most of the incidents have been linked to criminals and “tsotsis” working on behalf of local community leaders.

Constable Irene Masingi, spokesperson for the Mokopane police, agreed. “We have had plenty of robbery cases involving So-malis endangering themselves by stretching their trading hours. We therefore urge these owners to pay attention to our warning for the sake of their own safety,” said Masingi.

With the high amount of scams and fraud police have to deal with every day, the fol-lowing tips by them (police) might prove valuable to residents in protecting them-selves and their families from becoming vic-tims. The police warns that scams can cost people a lot of money and cause a great deal of distress.

Phishing and fraud scams are methods of deceitfully obtaining personal information such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card details by calling, sending emails or cell phone messages that look like they come from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies. Typically, these emails or cell phone mes-sages request users to click on a link in the email, which will direct them to a spoofed website – a site designed to fool users into thinking that it is legitimate – to obtain, verify or update contact details or other sensitive financial information.

These emails and messages also contain a telephone number and contact person who one is encouraged to call in order to win large sums of money.

What should a person do to prevent fall-ing victim to scams and fraud?

Never respond to emails or cell phone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request personal details. No bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your ac-count details by email.

Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone and never write it down or share these passwords or pins.

A person should never save their internet banking password on their desktop.

One’s computer should never be left unat-tended after having entered one’s internet banking password.

Always log off or sign off at the end of a session.

Avoid doing internet banking in public areas such as internet cafés, or on any com-puter that can be accessed by strangers.

A person should frequently change their PIN and passwords.

Put sensible transaction limits on ac-counts.

Only provide credit card details to repu-table companies.

If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.Never send money or give credit card or

online account details to anyone you do not know and trust.

“Volgens statistieke is daar ‘n groeiende hoeveelheid werklose mense in ons land wat êrens ‘n inkomste moet kry,” sê El-off.

LEPHALALE – Gedurende ‘n gemeens-kapspolisiëringsforum (GPF) vergadering verlede Donderdag is kommer uitgespreek oor ‘n kontrakteurskamp wat gevestig is naby Hoërskool Ellisras se koshuise.

Witnesses threatened MARAPONG – A case of malicious damage to property was opened after two vehicles were vandalised on Monday.

Warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale police says the two vehicles were parked in Maggy Street in Marapong. “The owners found their vehicles covered in spray paint and one vehicle’s tyres were punc-tured,” Mokoena says.

A note lwas eft on one of the vehicles that read: “Continue to be a witness against me [on my case].” A list of cases where the owners of the vehicles are witnesses was at-tached to the note.

Volgens Fourie was daar ‘n insident waar geweerskote afgevuur is vroeër die maand. “Ons het die spore gevolg tot by die koshuis en is bekommerd oor die tipe mense wat tans daar woon,” sê Fourie.

So said Lt.Col. Alpheus Mokale, provincial stock theft unit coordinator after he told Northern News that 57 stolen cattle from all over Limpopo were con-fiscated and are be-ing held at the Percy Fyfe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Whether live-stock buyers in any capacity such as a speculator, farmer, auctioneer or abattoir are knowingly or unknowingly recipients of stolen livestock, they automatically become liable for prosecution, says Mo-kale. “They can also be held liable for a fine,” he added.

Mokale explained that the increase in stock theft is mainly attributed to the non-compliance by role-players within the industry. “People who do not properly identify livestock through mandatory branding are damaging the economy.”

Statistics show the SA Livestock Industry is under strain and ongoing non compliance by livestock traders to basic requirements such as firebranding of livestock can have catastrophic consequences, says Mokale. Animals marked with a registered brand will make it easier to re-cover stock and it will discourage stock thieves. Disputes in courts regarding positive identification thereof will be something of the past, say legal experts.

Mokale urges owners of livestock to support the police by adhering to the various acts regulating owners of cattle and other livestock.

All livestock owners are urged to register a unique brand mark in their name and to apply it to all livestock in their possession in the prescribed manner as described in the Animal Identification Act, (Act 6 of 2002).

Col. Mokale advises livestock owners to contact their local stock theft office for advice on or complaints about livestock and or stock theft. Livestock owners can also con-tact the Red Meat Industry Forum at 012 665 146 or read more about legislation by visiting www.redmeatsa.co.za.

Stock theft skyrocket in LimpopoLIMPOPO -“The negative impact of stock theft in Limpopo will not decrease unless all stakeholders within the industry become actively involved in the ap-plications of the necessary acts.”

Two injured in car accidentLEPHALALE – A woman and her child was injured in a car accident on Tuesday morning. According to Sarah Modise, who witnessed the accident, a white Opel Corsa wanted to turn from Kameeldoring road into Palala road. An oncoming Toyota Fortuner allegedly swerved to avoid colliding with the Corsa and overturned. “I saw a woman and her child getting out of the Fortuner and it seems that they only had minor injuries,” Modise says.

MARAPONG – Promises for a super police station in Marapong seem to have amount-ed to nothing.

Northern News investigated the issue of the underutilised police station and pub-lished an article (“Where are the police?”) on 24 October 2014. In the article, the cluster commander, Col. Lammy Tsebe, promised that the underutilised satellite police station would be turned into a “super station”. He said plans were forwarded to the office of the premier to have the issue prioritised.

Northern News visited the satellite police station last week and found the building seemingly abandoned. Residents in the area confirmed that they rarely saw police mem-bers at this station.

Johannes Mashaba, who lives in exten-sion one near the police station in question, says that as a community they are concerned by the lack of a fully-functioning police sta-tion for a long time.

“After the Medupi strike earlier this year we have seen a lot of the so-called “ama-baretti squad “in the area but we don’t see local police officials,” Mashaba says. The Ama-beretti is the street name for the po-lice’s tactical response team.

According to Mashaba the police take their time to attend a scene after a crime has been committed. “I have heard of people complain-ing that the police don’t come at all when called,” Mashaba says.

The greater Marapong consists of six extensions and covers a population of about 26 227 people and 6 625 households. Situated next to Eskom, this area was affected the most by the Medupi strike earlier this year with reports of violence and malicious damage to property.

Questions about the ef-fectiveness of the satellite station to the provincial SAPS depart-ment were referred back to Lepha-lale SAPS. “I am not in a

LEPHALALE – The Living Waters Fellow-ship and Fellowship Alliance of South Africa (FASA) had a successful holiday camp at Lephalale Primary School last week.

According to Wendy Davies, an organiser of the event, their aim was to reach out to as many children as possible. “We were as-tounded by the success of the event and saw

Underutilised satellite police station?position to give information regarding the construction of a permanent police station in Marapong,” warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale SAPS commented.

He did say, however, that the satellite sta-tion is open from 07:00 until 16:00 during week days. “The satellite station is manned by skeleton staff at this stage and the build-ing was sponsored by Exxaro,” Mokoena says.

William Motlokwa, the ANC councillor in the area, is not happy with the fact that they don’t have a functioning police station in Marapong. “We need higher visibility and a more effective police station in our area,” Motlokwa says.

Marapong community policing forum chairman Josias Monyai says the satel-lite station presents the community with a big problem. “We never know whether the station is open to the public,” he explains. “Sometimes they close early and other times they don’t even open at all,” Monyai says.

Monyai says he phoned the Lephalale SAPS on several occasions only to be told that there are no vehicles available to go to Marapong. “Crime is high in Marapong and we need to be able to phone the police and know that they will respond on time.”

The Marapong area is seeing an increase in all crime and especially violent crimes. “Two weeks ago a woman was raped on her

way home from a shebeen,” says Abel Tshikidi who resides in Marapong exten-sion one. “Where were the police?”

'Radicals' reach out to childrenthe number of children who attended double every day,” Davies says.

A group of missionaries from America formed part of the leadership group who ministered to the children and on Friday everybody was spoilt with delicious pizza and a coke that was sponsored by the local Domino’s Pizza.

“The proper maintenance of existing road infra-structure, as well as the continual expansion of the current road network, is at the heart of socio economic development in Limpopo. Our duty is to ensure that the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure lives up to the expecta-tions of the people of Limpopo.”

Hon.Premier Chupu Mathabatha

“With fresh thinking and a solid determination to live up to its mandate, RAL is successfully putting the province back on the map, bringing about a new era for transportation in Limpopo. “

Hon.MEC Jeremiah Ndou, MPL

INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

According to Honourable MEC Jerry Ndou, the Provincial Executive Council and the new RAL management team under the leadership of CEO Mr. Maselaganye Matji, have explored several creative and innovative solutions to the roads upgrade and rehabilitation initiatives in order to improve infrastructure delivery. One such avenue is the formation of strategic partnerships with private stakeholders across the province to speed up the management, construction and maintenance of roads in Limpopo. In one such collaboration, RAL and the Exxaro Coal (Pty) Ltd will sign an Agreement by Thursday, 23 July 2015 to upgrade portions in the extent of 47.6km of roads D3012, D3114 and D3109 in the Lephalale Municipality (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha).

Another Agreement that is in the process of being signed is between RAL and Rustenburg Platinum Mines (Anglo American Platinum) for upgrading of 20km of road D4180 in Sekhukhune District (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha).

RAL is also in the process of finalizing a part-nership Agreement with PPC Cement, as well as the respective Limpopo and North West Provincial Governments, to upgrade an 82km secondary road between Koedoeskop and Dwaalboom, in the Waterberg District.

Other partnerships in the pipeline are with Barloworld Equipment, Bertie Van Zyl (BPK) (ZZ2), Marula Platinum, Palaborwa Mining Company (PMC) and other municipalities in the province.

In addition, the Agency has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research (CSIR), which will see the transfer of scientific and engineering skills through research, development and innovation technologies that can enhance infrastructure delivery.

According to Mr. Matji “Government alone cannot address infrastructure backlogs. Strategic partnerships with private sector players are key to successful infrastructure delivery in Limpopo Province and the rest of South Africa’’

Limpopo roads are set to undergo a dramatic transformation in the next three years. This follows MEC Jerry Ndou’ s announcement of the R1.2 billion rollout of more than 12 major road infrastructure projects across the province that will not only ensure the improvement of road infrastructure, but also empower local businesses and communities with emphasis on women and the youth. Selected projects are:

A. Upgrading of road D1392 from Ga-Phasha to Mampuru to Tukakgomo to Makgabane in the Sekhukhune District (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha);

B. Upgrading of roads D4 and D3745 from Matsakale to Altein to Shangoni Kruger National Park Gate in Vhembe District;

C. Upgrading of road D3423 from Moletjie (Road D3332) to Ga-Legodi to Mankgodi Road P94/1 in the Capricorn District;

D. Upgrading of roads and D3820 and D3205 from Babangu to Ndhengeza to Noblehoek to Maphalle in Mopani District;

E. Rehabilitation of roads D9 from Giyani to Malamulele in the Mopani District;

F. Preventative maintenance from Arabie to Marble Hall (D2534) in Sekhukhune District;

G. Preventative maintenance of road D887 from Tomburke to Alldays in the Waterberg District.

Contractors have been appointed and the site handover programme commenced on 15 July 2015 and will be completed by 31 August 2015.

According to Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha, the upgrading and expansion of Limpopo’s roads have been earmarked as a top priority for the province, as its almost 20260km of roads are vital to the socio-economic development of the province and its closest neighbours. “Our roads are not only linking major local industries, such as mining, eco-tourism and agriculture to other economic hubs in South Africa, but it’s also the country’s gateway for freight transport into the rest of Africa,” Mathabatha said.

News that Limpopo’s road infrastructure is receiving attention at the highest level, has been widely welcomed, with Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Honourable MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Honourable Jerry Ndou, personally monitoring progress to ensure the speedy delivery of these crucial projects.

BEYOND ROADS Although the ultimate aim of Limpopo’s roads infrastructure programme is a ro-bust, world-class network of roads in the province, Premier Chupu Mathabatha also stressed the wider importance of such a programme on the provincial economy and communities at large. “By creating infrastructure, we are also creat-ing jobs, transferring skills and uplifting communities in many different ways. It’s

absolutely critical that we empower our lo-cal suppliers and businesses, with a special focus on women and youth,” M a t h a b a t h a said.

To this end, as part of its Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment strategy, RAL has been tasked to expand its existing contrac-tor development programme, with views to partner with private companies in order to support small and emerging contractors and other related SMME’s in Limpopo.

“By restructuring RAL we’ve been able to build expertise in a variety of areas, from top management to the hiring of more engineers in-house, as well as reducing RAL’s dependence on outside consultants, all of which have improved the Agency’s ability to deliver on its mandate,” MEC Ndou said.

Roads and Infrastructure, Jerry Ndou, the transformation of RAL included the appointment of a new Board of Directors under the leadership of Mr. Matome Ralebipi, a Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Maselaganye Matji, as well as a number of key executives within the Agency. The Agency promulgated a Turnaround Strategy in 2014, whereby the Board of RAL led by Mr. Matome Ralebipi, set in place internal control measures to root out corruption and eradicate irregular expenditure, deal with adverse audit, building capacity internally in the engineering unit, introducing proactive assurance, strengthening internal controls, restructuring procurement processes to ensure compliance, termination of illegally appointed contractors and engineers. Building internal capacity is in-line with Chapter 13 of the National Development Plan (NDP) and Limpopo Development Plan (LDP).

An important part of the provincial executive’s intervention has been the complete restructuring of Roads Agency Lim-popo (RAL). According to Honourable MEC for Public Works,

A NEW TEAM. A NEW VISION.

One of the most significant improve-ments made to the Agency has been the introduction of an Internal Control Unit, designed to safeguard assets and ensure that all road infrastructure contracts are concluded in accordance with prescribed regulations.

As part of its commitment to make RAL more effective, the Agency has stressed its zero tolerance approach to fraud, not only in terms of new cases, but also in its renewed commitment to pursue past cases of irregular expenditure, whether internally or by external suppliers, in order

to recoup misappropriated funds and bring possible guilty parties to justice.

On a recent site visit to the as yet incom-plete Ga-Mampuru / Ga-Phasha Road in the Sekhukhune District, Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha, once again deplored the negative impact fraudulent activities have had in the past on roads infrastructure proj-ects and ensured communities that this will not be tolerated under his leadership. “The Ga-Phasha / Mampuru road has been ear-marked as a priority, and the rehabilitation and upgrading of this road will commence in the next few days,” Premier Mathabatha said.

A contractor has since been appointed and a site handover was held on 15 July 2015.

With a dynamic new team at the helm of RAL collaborating closely with the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Honourable MEC Jerry Ndou, there has been a real sense of momentum in Limpopo’s roads infrastructure delivery process.

In addition to tackling past challenges, the province has already seen the imple-mentation of a number of road construc-tion and rehabilitation projects, includ-ing the construction of 21 bridges, the upgrade of 407km of gravel roads to tar, and the rehabilitation of 173km of tarred roads. This includes the recent expansion of the R510 between Rustenburg and Thabazimbi, and the construction of the Mokgalwaneng road in Moses Kotane Municipality. In addition, RAL has also added to its portfolio 19 new projects that are currently in construction phase, 35 in planning phase, and designs for 35 additional projects that will soon become a reality.

A VISIBLE CHANGEFACING PAST CHALLENGES

With involvement at the highest level, a motivated team on the ground, and a strong sense of community empower-ment, Limpopo is set for future growth.

WATERBERG HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

berg NewsTop 10 learners inspireBy Lischen Kekana

The fight is on to determine who will be the Waterberg High learners that secure the Top 10 academic spots. It’s important to remember, a marathon is won, not in leaps and bounds, but stride by stride.

Already Khumatjo Hunadi Radebe in grade 10 is looking forward to holding the trophy. She has obtained an 82% average, making her the top learner for 2015 first term.

The school decided to take the grade 12 top ten learners to lunch at Maxis Mokopane in April to show the school’s appreciation for their hard work. It was also a means to encourage other learners to work harder and improve their grades.

Burgers, chips and soft drinks were served to nine girls along with the head boy, Thapelo Mamashela, who represented the school’s boys. Thapelo is the only boy chal-lenging the girls in the top 10. He acts as an inspiration to the rest of the boys.

Right: The Top 10 learners in were treated to lunch at Maxi's Mokopane to show Waterberg High School's appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Prefect challengeBy Thorisho Noko

During the last term of 2014, 35 learners were nominated as shadow prefects by teachers and the 2014 prefects. Twenty learners were chosen as prefects and continue to lead the way in 2015.

The shadow prefects had to perform certain duties to prove their abilities as leaders – a difficult task as they were competing against each other.

Finally, 20 prefects were elected and announced at the 2014 prize giving awards and then took over the reigns as school leaders. Interviews were held by Mr WJ Strauss and Ms EN Smuts to deter-mine each prefect’s profile.

The 2015 prefects were given the responsibility to raise R12 000 for the grade 12 farewell. They had to come up with events an encourage learners to par-ticipate to ensure that the fundraising was successful. Some R9 000 was raised dur-ing the first term and the prefects hope to raise double the amount.

In 2013, the prefects raised about R10 000, while the 2014 prefects raised about R11 000. It looks like the group of 2015 is determined to beat the target.

Teacher's corner: Mr A.D. HornBy Lerato Tapala

Waterberg High School principal Mr André Horn believes in quality education for his learners and in making sure that teachers are in classes imparting knowledge. He believes in extra classes and in working to-gether to bring learners to the levels where they need to be. H2O’s Lerato Tapala found out more about the school’s dynamic leader.

What motivates you as a teacher?I am motivated by learners who

acknowledge the fact that you’ve done something to change their lives for the better and by learners who take the time come back to appreciate your efforts.

How would other teachers describe you?I believe they would describe me as

punctual, hard working, strict, sometimes overreacting to a situation and perhaps someone with a short temper.

What does the word success mean to you?

Success is when you achieve that goal that you have set out for yourself – whether it is a big or small goal. Reaching that specific goal is success.

What question would you like learners to ask you for this interview?

I would like the question: ‘How do you think people outside the school see our learners?’ My answer would be that on many occasions people outside the school say that the learners I have taught are neat, well-behaved and polite. Even in town, the major-ity of people say that our learners are humble and grateful. As a school principal this is a very good thing, because when the learners leave school next year they will look the part and be very different from other learners.

If you could go back in time where would you go?

I would revisit my life 12 years ago when I had the opportunity to go to Kenya and Tanzania. I would find out how the schools operated there and would take the time to see the wild life. School principal André Horn. Photo by Prudence Sithole.

Come sing alongBy Princess Kekana

Waterberg High School is working hard to achieve top honours for its extra-mural ac-tivities such as hockey, netball, swimming, chess, debating, drummies and cheerlead-ing. Waterberg High School now also boasts a choir.

The choir was started by Mrs. Mphalele earlier this year. She told H2O News that she has a real love for music and singing which motivated her to start the choir. “I was a choir co-ordinator for a long time, so practic-ing with this group will not be a problem!”

There are about 30 learners in the choir group with Mosa Makhado taking the role as the lead singer for the soprano division.

There are student teachers assisting the choir. Lavender Marakalala says they love assisting as it allows learners to participate in a different kind of extra-mural activity – it accommodates learners who are very good at singing and gives them the platform to per-form and grow and develop their skills.

A fashionable manBy Karabo Mathibela

You have seen him. That skinny guy whose clothes attract a lot of attention. We’re talking about the one and only Mashala Papo (Mash P).

When it comes to ex-traordinary fashion this guy brings it full blast with his own creative designs that bring the best out of any fab-ric. This is the art of fashion in motion.

“Fashion is an art to treasure and worship,” Mash P answers when asked why he has a boundless passion for fashion. “I really can’t tell if it’s a genetic predisposi-tion of a natural talent, but I believe fashion is who I am and not what I do.”

Night study for better grades The 2015 prefects started an initiative which saw the formulation of a night study group. The group has proven to be successful and allow peers the opportunity to assist one an-other.

Reviving Cheer SpiritBy Dimpho Sekhaolelo

Cheering is an important part of upholding good spirits within a school and Waterberg High School has started its own drum majorettes and cheerleading team. It has been a great success thus far. They just need more teams to compete with. If you are interested in starting your own cheer squad to revive cheer spirit in Mokopane, contact the Waterberg cheerleading team at: [email protected].

Safety comes firstBy Prudence Sithole

Waterberg High School is now a qualified school patrol school, who is well-equipped to navigate traffic from 06:35 to 07:00 in the mornings.

The patrol is responsible for the safety of learners and ensures that accidents do not take place. A speed bump has been placed strategically to ensure that motorists drive slowly.

The patrol and speed bump is the culmination of a roads and safety project introduced to Waterberg High School in 2012. Learners volunteered to take part in the project and participated in a competition sponsored by the Road Accident fund.

Now the lives of our learners are in safe hands.

Movie night for learnersBy Keletso Kganyago

Waterberg High School hosted a special movie night in April.

The first movie chosen was ‘John Wick’, an American action movie. The second was a South African production entitled ‘Hard to Get’, an action romance.

It was an excellent South Afri-can movie starring Pallance Dladla (who had the girls screaming) and Thishiwe Ziqubu. The film explores the universal theme of love in the very specific context of contemporary South Africa. The learners had a great time and that was the night to remember.

The Waterberg High School rugby team played its first game away from home and took on Hoërskool Piet Potgieter (HPP) in May. With both schools situated in Mokopane it felt like a home game ‘away from home’. It had all the right elements, cheerleaders cheering the Waterberg ‘tigers’ on and ‘captain fantastic’ Kabelo Remasobene scored the first try of the game followed by Matsobane Rakgotho with a 100% conversion rate. The strong HPP side scored the final and winning try in the last minutes of the game. The final score was 24-19.

Servaas leun so effens vorentoe in die stoel. “Ek kan nou nie alles onthou wat hy gesê het nie, maar toe hy eers begin bev-ele uitbasuin toe hoor ek sommer weer daai beneukte samajoor vanuit my army dae. Die blaf soos ’n befoeterde bulterriër en die res moet net spring.

“Eers moes die karavaan se tent af en dis net: ‘Gryp daar!’ ‘Bring hom nou oor.’ ‘Nee man, nie so vinnig nie.’ ‘So ja, laat los!’ ‘Trek ma, die ding sit nog vas!’

“Tussen dit alles deur skroei die son en die sweet tap. Hoe hoër die son lig, hoe korter raak pa-samajoor se humeur.

“Een keer klink dit of iemand geklap word en toe bulder pa-samajoor, ‘Klap jy weer jou boetie dan m**r ek jou!”

“Ma sprak omtrent g’n sprook nie. In bykans doodse stilte pak sy haar goed soos sy dit wil hê.

Herman draai sy groot lyf so skuins in die stoel.

Ek leun agteroor in my stoel. “Dit kom nou van te haastig inpak.”

Herman loer na my.

Mariët was jare lank werksaam by Hoër-skool Ellisras waar sy in die koshuis se kom-

LEPHALALE - In celebrating the life and times of Nelson Mandela, the Lephalale Municipality hosted the MEC for Health Dr Phophi Ramathu-ba, former ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa and members of the community at the Thabo Mbeki Sta-dium on Mandela Day.

The aim of the event was to launch 67 projects to celebrate the 67 years Mandela spent in service of the people of SA. The Mayor of Lephalale, Cllr Jack Maeko (right) and the MEC es-corted two teams who started the day by painting the Matsiababa Secondary School as well as the Morukhurukhung Primary School in the Lerupurupung village. The delegation later partook in the opening of a new gym and com-munity hall in Thabo Mbeki. Acting municipal manager, Edith Tukakgomo, thanked Exxaro for its contribution in assisting the municipality to provide the much needed facilities.

The main event saw local artists such as Midda Mashabela and gospel artist Prince on stage.

Matthews Phosa (on the left) spoke about

the life and sacrifice of Mandela, while Da-vid Modisagape from the ministry of land and housing in Botswana and Pastor Willem Papo gave messages of support.

“My motivering was my kinders, ek wou weer saam met hulle bal skop.

HPP uitblinkers
