LEPHALALE

More than 60 people will appear in the Lephalale magistrate court today (Friday) on charges of malicious damage to property and public violence following strike action at the Aveng Grinaker LTA site in Lephalale last Friday. Striking employees burnt a generator and set fire to property adjacent to the office buildings of Avenge Grinaker before they took to the streets where they threw stones at passing motorists. All 63 detainees were denied bail when they first appeared in court on Monday.

Avenge Grinaker LTA is a contractor on The Mokolo and Crocodile Water Augmenta-tion Project (MCWAP) which is overseen by the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA). Spokesperson for the TCTA, Khudu Mbeba, told Northern News on Tuesday that the site is

Caught red handedA 25-year-old man from Pholapark was arrested and charged with housebreaking.

The suspect was reported to the police by neighbours who had suspected him of burglaries in the area. Upon the police officers’ arrival at the house he was reported to be in, they found the padlock on the door was sawn off.

They searched the house and found the suspect inside a wardrobe in possession of window handles, that was stolen from a vacant house shortly before his arrest.

Dagga dealer arrestedA 20-year-old African male was arrested on drug dealing charges in Lephalale on Friday after he was found in possession of 75kg of dagga. His arrest followed a tip-off which the police followed up immediately. He appeared before the magistrate in Lephalale regional court the same day and was denied bail.

Young Cassenova stabbed to deathOn 21 July at 2:10am a 16-year-old boy was found stabbed to death outside Lebese Tavern in Mahwelereng.

The boy was said to be fondling another girl when his 13-year-old girlfriend walked in on them. A fight allegedly broke out between the two girls. The boy was later attacked and stabbed to death.

The suspect (13) appeared at the Mokerong Magistrates court on Monday on a murder charge and was released to the custody of her parents. She will undergo psychological evaluation and is due back in court on August 7. - Botshelo Letlabola

63 strikers in court closed until further notice. He also confirmed that 25 strikers were treated in hospital on Friday after police fired shots in the air and a stampede ensued in which strikers were tram-pled. “All of the injured workers were released from hospital on Friday, after sustaining minor cuts and bruises.”

Mbeba commended Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, whom strikers demanded to speak to. “The Mayor listened to their grievances and then had the opportunity to communicate those grievances to the management team. Grievances relate to pension funds and bene-fits. The TCTA is in the process of facilitating talks between unions NUM and NUMSA and Avenge Grinaker LTA with the hope that we can resume work on the project as soon as possible.”

Violent strike action greeted Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises in Lephalale on Wednesday ahead of their site visit to the Medupi Power Station. The committee was being briefed by Eskom at the nearby Matimba Power Station when protesters gathered at the Medupi site. The protest soon turned violent as strikers hurled stones at security guards.

According to a spokesperson for Vetus Schola, 16 of their security guards were injured with four sustaining serious injuries. The site was quickly evacuated and locked down. Reports later confirmed that five vehi-cles were set alight and property damaged.

According to provincial spokesperson for the police, Col Ronel Otto, 45 people were

detained on Wednesday and taken in for questioning. She also confirmed that two non-striking employees were assaulted by strikers. The two were taken to the Ellisras Hospital by ambulance.

The aim of the portfolio committee’s visit was to investigate the recent extension of the deadline in the roll-out of the first phase of the project from the end of this year to mid-2014. Natasha Michael, DA Spokes-person on Public Enterprises and member of the portfolio committee told Northern News on Wednesday that the committee would still visit the site on Thursday morning.

Northern News will report on the commit-tee’s findings when the paper hits the streets, next Friday.

Various fires were set by angry strikers at the Medupi- construction site on Wednesday.

Right across the road from the Mogalakwena municipal buildings, raw sewage have been boiling onto the side walks of Ruiter and Retief streets for weeks while the local lea-dership is entangled in a political battle for the head of the municipal manager (MM), William Kekana.

On Monday the Gauteng North High Court ordered that the status quo of Kekana as MM be maintained until it rules on the case between himself and the local council. But when he arrived for work on Tuesday, he was locked out and a guard was posted to keep him out of his office. This followed a special council meeting on 12 July where Mogalak-wena Mayor, Tlhalefi Mashemaite, presented a report from the executive committee regarding a ‘settlement’ with Kekana.

At this meeting the opposition cited that no report was attached 24-hours in advance as required by the standing rules and orders as well as the Municipal Systems Act of 2000. A motion was brought and seconded that the meeting should be adjourned until due process was followed.

Even the speaker, Melba Mabusela, indi-cated that she was not consulted about the emergency report as required by the standing rules and orders of the council.

After a short adjournment, council was told that Mabusela had to ‘unexpectedly’ leave the council chamber and an acting speaker was elected. This time the motion by opposing councillors was ignored and the Mayor was allowed to present the report verbally, without any written copy being presented to council.

Opposition parties registered their votes against the continuation of the illegal meeting and walked out.

But neither this, nor four consecutive court orders against councillors not to discuss the

The newly inaugurated Premier of Limpopo, Stanley Mathabatha, officially announced his provincial cabinet last Friday. Matha-batha said his appointment as the Premier of Limpopo bound him to uphold the Consti-tution and one of his duties was to invite those who will serve as MECs to assume their responsibilities in this regard.

The ANC provincial task team and the Youth League welcomed the newly appointed Members of the Executive Coucil (MECs) in a statement issued this week saying that “this is a necessary step in re-en-gineering the ANC’s machinery towards the advancement of a better life for our people. The people of Limpopo have always showed an unfaltering commitment and support to the ANC, and the Youth League believes that the new Members of the Exec-

terms of the contract of the municipal manager (a court case between him and the council is still sub judice) stopped ANC councillors from cancelling Kekana’s contract.

This week, however, Mashemaite refused to comment on the matter, saying his legal advisors advised him not to talk about Keka-na’s position as it may interfere with the legal process and weaken the ANC’s case.

Northern News first approached the municipality for clarity on these allegations at the beginning of this month when the execu-tive committee was said to have instructed municipal heads of departments to halt the issuing of tenders until the municipal manager, William Kekana, “has been made to exit.”

The only DA councillor on the execu-tive committee (Exco), Beyers Smit, was not invited to the Exco-meeting where this order was issued. He later confronted the Mayor with allegations that department heads were told that in future, “they should take cue from the ANC.”

“The mayor did not deny this,” Smit told Northern News.

The provincial DA leadership responded with a press statement saying government

duties and its provision of services cannot be jeopardised because ruling party members in the municipality want tenders to enrich themselves. “There must be a clear distinc-tion between government and the ANC. Muni-cipal officials are accountable to that sphere of government and not to the ANC. Their job descriptions are defined by the applicable laws as opposed to party’s instructions,” the DA said.

Two weeks ago the municipal communi-cations department responded to Northern News’ queries on this matter saying it is still gathering facts and will give response in due course. This week municipal spokesperson, Malesela Selokela referred Northern News to the Mayor who would not comment on the fact that the municipality was ignoring a court order to reinstate Kekana in his position and said he was also not at liberty to discuss the ANC councillors’ grievances against Kekana.

To date Northern News has not been able to establish why the ANC so desperately wants to get rid of Kekana. Mashemaite promised to shed more light on the matter at a later stage

Kekana could not be reached for comment.

Thursday, July 18 is known as Mandela Day and it is celebrated across the globe. It is a day of

service that recognizes South African activist and former president Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday.

This year, the Mogalakwena Municipal Mayor, His Worship Cllr Tlhalefi Mashamaite, EXCO members, Councilors and the social partners, EH Hassim Builders World, Black Manage-ment Forum and the Department of Forestry and Fisheries gathered at Sekgakgapheng Village in Moko-pane to give 67 minutes doing the community work.

They gave their 67 minutes building an RDP House for the Mashaba family and planting fruit trees for the family. The family comprises 17 members, 10 grandchildren and five elders. They depend on the social grants of the grandmother, one family member and 10 grandchildren. They never had a house before, thus have been living in a shack.

Petrus Mashaba, family member said, “I am out of words but we are delighted and thankful for what our municipality and their partners are doing for us today, this means a lot to us.”

On the afternoon Mayor Masha-maite proceeded to Mokopane bus/taxi rank where he launched the new Great North Transport Busses.

In brief Mashamaite said, “We are happy for changing the lives of the people for better. In a week the Mashaba family will be having a shelter to hide their heads and thanks for our partners for making this happen.”

“We also appreciate the efforts of Great North Transport by introducing the new busses. This shows that they really care about the commuters.

A spider relocation project in Lephalale by the Exxaro Grootegeluk Medupi Expansion Project teams has shown positive and pro-mising success and is attracting the attention of a host of other organisations interested in the rehabilitation and enhancement of biodi-versity.

Northern News reported on the project last year when baboon spiders were observed along the roads during the vegetation clearing phase for the construction of roads leading to the Medupi power station in March 2012. Suggestions were made to move the spiders to a safer area as they are long-living inverte-brates protected under the National Environ-mental Management: Biodiversity Act.

Exxaro put the job of capturing the spiders out to tender and engaged Reptile Rescue’s Marius Koekemoer, a local resident of Lepha-lale with extensive knowledge of reptiles and spiders, (and moreover with a government permit to remove the spiders from the wild) to remove them from the site. Koekemoer worked with two research technicians, Bianca Smith and Roelien Jacobs, to capture the spiders over a period of three weeks. Overall they removed 175 individuals of the two species along the Nelson Mandela Road and another 376 along the Kuipersbult Road.

An 800ha portion in the south of the Manketti Game Reserve, just outside Lepha-lale, was identified as a suitable new habitat. The area was screened and a natural popu-lation of baboon spiders identified and used as a naturally occurring control population. A total of 60 spiders were also relocated on Eskom’s rehabilitated Matimba power station ash dump in order to test the results of the research project in action.

At the relocation sites, around 200 man-made burrows of different diameters were created in the ground to accommodate the baboon spiders. A steel cage manufactured by the central plate workshop team at Grootegeluk was fixed into the ground over each artificial burrow to prevent spiders from escaping until

they had adopted the burrow, and to keep predators out.

Each burrow, for both the relocated and control populations was monitored weekly, directly after release, and monthly after the first three months.

“We said that we would be happy if over a period of one week, 50% accepted their new burrows, so we were absolutely thrilled with a 95% acceptance rate,” said Marius Fuls, Manketti Game Reserve research manager.

“Releasing them without a ready-made burrow is not very successful. They are usually eaten by predators such as baboons, mongooses, birds and other spiders before they can build a shelter for themselves. We also observed that the time of day of reloca-tion is important: it seemed more successful to relocate the spiders in the first half of the day in order to give them time to settle before they become active at night.

“Construction company Basil Read heard about the project and brought a number of spiders they discovered while working on the Mokolo pipeline and BHP Billiton, has expressed interest in our project as well,” said Fuhls.

According to Exxaro’s ecologist, Koos Smit, the project enables the company to mitigate the impact of its operations. “The research findings indicate that these species can be relocated successfully to ensure the survival of individuals and populations. Entomologist Dr Dawid Jacobs is of the opinion that the reloca-tion methods that have been tested will prob-ably be applicable to most other baboon spider species as the two species that were relocated are the most common species,” he added.Photos courtesy of Exxaro

As one of its Mandela Day initiatives, Exxaro held a sod-turning ceremony to symbolise its intent to construct a 36.2 kilometre road throughout the Ga-Seleka village, just outside Lephalale.

This follows complaints by the community that the existing road turns into a river whenever it rains and that children who have to go to school are then left stranded. The road starts at Latlora village and travelles through Kgobagodimo, Kopanong, Botsalanong, Segale, Moong, Botshabelo, Morwe, Mokuruanyane and Sefihlogo amongst others until it joins road R572.

Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko commended Exxaro for its initiatives saying it shows that Exxaro does not only care about their profit margins but also the development of the commu-nity. - Tebogo Tlhako

What better way to honour Madiba than support Mandela Day? Our former president gave 67 years of his life to the struggle for social justice.“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the diffe-rence we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” those were the iconic words used by Mandela at Desmond Tutu’s 90th birthday celebration.

The community of Mokopane did their bid by taking 67 minutes and using it to give back. The police paid their dues by going to Herfsland old age home and cleaning the yard, clearing all bushes and entertaining the elderly.

Giving back to the community - how did you spend your 67-minutes?

The Computer for Kids Foundation took their 67 minutes to the Mahwelereng Centre of Hope were children with disabilities learnt the use of a computer via the e-learner programme. Chanson Sithole, the programme director, explained to Northern News how the interactive programme works and what skills are being developed and explored.

The Mogalakwena Local Municipality Mayor, Tlhalefi Mashamaite, EXCO members, in partnershoip with EH Hassim Builders World, Black Management Forum and the Department of Forestry and Fisheries spent their 67 minutes doing community work at Sekgakgapeng Village.- Botshelo Letlabola

Mbonyana & Associates a local engineering company donated garden tools, seedlings, manure and gave 67 minutes plus for Mandela day.

Kenneth Mbonyana and his team arrived at the school around 10h30 where they were joined by some parents of the learners who lent a hand by cleaning grass from the garden and preparing seed beds. Teachers led by example and were part of the project from start to finish. The staff of Folang medical centre arrived around midday to play their part when they donated food stuff for needy learners and a few drymacs, they also gave 67 minutes for Mandela day. Exxaro decided this year to focus on educa-tion as part of its Mandela day initiative.

Several teams visited schools in the area. At Lephalale primary the Exxaro project manager, Dirk Laubsher, spoke to learners about Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the importance of caring for your community. Learners also sang “Happy Birthday” to former president Nelson Mandela on his birthday.

Who did what on Mandela Day?

The Lephalale police did their part for Mandela day by tending to a vegetable garden at the One Stop Centre in Marapong where 56 orphans and 35 elderly are fed daily.

Lephalale Municipality and Exxaro teamed up for their 67 minutes for Madiba at Moroe primary school in Rietfon-tein. They planted 20 mango trees and a lawn donated by Exxaro on the school ground. Blankets were handed out to the elderly in the community and those who with Mandela turned 95 this year got the opportunity to cut the birthday cake.

Eskom staff members had a lot of fun painting the SAVF One stop centre in Marapong.

The social workers from the Lephalale Municipality's depart-ment of social development cooked for orphans in Marapong on Thursday.

ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST

“So ent verby die Tafelkoppe hoor ek my broer skreeu en skreeu. Ek ignoreer die skreeuery so in my diepste slaap tot ek een vreeslike hou in die ribbes kry. Mens, maar toe ek so regs kyk weet ek sommer hier is moei-likheid.

lami.

Ek verwens

“Ek het so geskrik ek dag by myself, so kans vat ek nie. Die brieke moet reg en basta. Ek klouter sommer dadelik agter toe.
