At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

He called a child over, placed it in their midst,

Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

地使用自由;

應培養親子關係,避免子女患上「科技性的自閉」;

適當時刻和適當方式」下進行;

Interview

Another challenge she encountered in serving was dealing with interpersonal conflicts. Analyn, a peace-loving person, disliked conflict and confrontation. However, it was inevitable while working with different parties. With these experiences, she learned how to handle them with compassion and understanding instead of avoiding them.

As a contemplative person, Analyn constantly asked for guidance through prayers as she always wondered what her mission was. She grew more mature throughout the years. One thing she learned was how to cast her burdens on the Lord and let God took the wheel of her life. It was never easy, she admitted, but it taught her how faith worked. Analyn said she used to envy those who were very committed and faithful to God, but with her constant reflections and daily learning, she learned that all she needed to do was to learn from them and then listen to her heart and did what she had to do. She found the peacefulness in doing so though she admitted that the struggle was constant. She had faith that she would overcome these by the grace of God.

When asked what she would like to share with her brothers and sisters in the community, she reminded us that we were responsible to God and God only. We did not need to live a life of what others expected us to lead. Instead, we should constantly search our hearts to ensure what we were doing was out of love. We also needed to be honest and truthful to ourselves as it was a crucial step to truly understand why we did what we did. In this case, we would be able to avoid from falling into the trap of justification and self-righteousness. Being kind to others was also important. Analyn wished that we all could see others with an open heart. Even the smallest act of kindness had already demonstrated God’s love to our neighbors. Analyn, as a caring and sentimental person, understood the physical and psychological fatigue we might experience in our daily life. Therefore, it was important for us to be able to set aside some quiet time to be with God and with ourselves. Rosary and prayers were effective ways to replenish her passions in Christ and in life. Without constant communication with ourselves and with God, we might serve God and others with a hardened heart. Finally, she believed that looking for our mission and purpose in life was a life-long process. It was never easy but Analyn urged us not to give up lightly.

Analyn Pelovello, a cheerful and gentle lady, greeted me with the warmest smile at the Tea Room in one winter afternoon. Sitting outside with sunlight and gentle breeze, Analyn began to recount her journey with God.

Arriving Hong Kong in 2008, Analyn has been serving in our Church for almost seven years. She is now one of the coordinators of the Altar Service. It was a surprise for her that she was re-nominated again but she accepted it with humility and tried her best to fulfil her responsibilities. One of her struggles in serving was the need to wake up early on Sunday mornings. She tried to cope by herself at first but kept failing. Her friend later decided to give her wake-up calls. It kept her going for a while until she realized that she became dependent on her friend - it was her responsibility and not her friend’s. She then decided to decline her friend’s help and tried to use various ways to tackle the issue. Through trial and error, Analyn finally found ways to manage it. Her reflective nature also allowed her to reflect on her weakness – laziness, and how it played a part in this. She saw how she always justified her actions without truly trying to

understand the issues and deal with them. Instead, her sense of justification allowed her to avoid the core issue which later developed into a vicious cycle. It was through constant prayers and self-meditation had she come to realize this. She now sees herself improving and is constantly on guard so that she would not fall into the traps of self-justification.

1. What is your favorite prayer?2. How does it change your life?3. Working in Hong Kong, what are your wishes and prayers for the Chinese Community this Year of the Rooster

From the events and realization that touched my life this year, my favorite prayer now is the Act of Contrition.

It is a prayer that is not only heartily asking God for the forgiveness of sins but also promising to God to try not to sin again and avoid what leads me to sin. There is penance, reconciliation and rebuilding of my relationship with God. I have been teaching my 8 year old son Andre to pray this prayer and it is now included in his night prayer together with the Angel of God prayer. It has changed my life in a grand way, since through this prayer I am rebuilding my relationship with God. I am consciously knowing and reminding myself if I have done wrong and figuring out in my personal way how to overcome the daily temptation. I cannot change myself overnight but I can try to change myself in every moment of each day.

The only prayer I know and learned from my childhood days is “Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be”. Then during my teen age years, I learned how to meditate and pray for my personal intentions which varied by day to day encounters, but then, after these prayers I still followed with “Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be”. The Lord taught us this prayer; I say this prayer when I’m in trouble, distress, sad, happy. This is my usual prayer, for me it is complete but I have to admit that every time I say this prayer no matter how solemn, I will be always be distracted by something. So I also consider this prayer as the most difficult to pray, it is very short and easy but praying it by heart is very difficult, I always encounter distraction.

In this coming New Year 2017 is the Year of the Rooster for the Chinese. All I wish is that their Christian Faith will grow. As we all know that many of them don’t have Religion at all. I pray that Hong Kong will be peaceful and stable in terms of the economy, whereby they may employ more people from foreign countries, like the Philippines.

Alex Obcena

My favorite Prayer is John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” We should always pay homage to Jesus. We should always remember that Jesus sacrificed himself for us. We should always be joined to Jesus - to love him unconditionally.

Be grateful for everything that the Lord has bestowed on me. I'm blessed with everything I need. I am working hard towards everything I want. And most of all, I appreciate and thank God for what I have.

Wishing all a healthy and prosperous Chinese New Year.

Mary May Wong

In this coming New Year – the Year of the Rooster - the main feature of the Rooster is - “it sings heralds to the dawn”; it also embodies the hero, the guardian and protector of life. The rooster is always on guard, looking down on the people and carefully looking to the horizon. The Rooster is the embodiment of youth, strength, hope and purity. My prayers are for the youth of today in Hong Kong; may they have the clarity of mind to know what is good and what it is right. May they have the strength to fight for what is good and just and may they not lose hope of the future. For when you are in darkness, your hope is your strength and light to guide you.

How do we respond to our calling?

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

Perhaps Jesus' toughest teaching is to "love your neighbor as yourself". Sure, that seems easy enough—until we really think about what it means. He didn't say "like" them. He said "love" them. And we don't get to pick who our neighbor is. It's everyone. Were Jesus' expectations too high? Surely he'd know that it's not so easy to love everybody. Well, He wasn't just God on High shouting down orders. He experienced what we experience. When He told us to live a certain way, it was coming from a guy who'd been there. He lived on Earth. At the Last Supper, Jesus was in the same room with a bunch of people about to betray Him, deny Him and desert Him. And He knew it. But what does Jesus do? "He got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him "He's surrounded by guys who don't deserve His love or respect. And He washes their feet. Jesus shows how to love the unlovables. It is absolutely clear that God has called us to a free life. Just make sure that we don't use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever we want … Rather, use our freedom to serve one another in love" Ask God to give us eyes to see the unsurpassable worth He sees in the difficult person we are interacting with. Loving our enemy does not mean we have to add them to our Christmas list or make them our best friend or we excuse their behavior. It means we forgive them, with the knowledge that God is both merciful and just.

Ludy Perez

Last November 26, 2016 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm we held an Advent recollection with Fr. Jay and some 40 participants; preparing ourselves for the coming of the Lord, we had time to reflect how to respond to God’s calling.

Through faith and prayer nothing is impossible with God, however, our faith urges us to believe that God’s plans for our lives are not limited. The story of the calling of Simon and Andrew is just one of many Bible stories highlighting the unlikely path of discipleship. The message we can take away with us is that God may call us to places far outside of our comfort zone, into tasks we feel unprepared for, lands that are far from home, and friendship that help us grow into ways we never thought possible. We may not know the full itinerary at the onset of our journey, but we can trust that it is sure to be an amazing ride, and we are always safe in God’s hand.

It is natural to feel some anxiety or fear about what the future holds for us; we live in a competitive culture, where resumes and social network are often viewed as a mark of one’s value or place in society. You may be feeling the need to prove your worth to the world.

Following God’s will and not my own has been an amazing journey and my role as a single mother of two kids is one of the most fulfilling parts of my life; by saying “YES” to God, my life has truly flourished.

Whatever our calling, we are first and foremost called to a life of holiness. Before we were born, God had a plan for each of us; nothing will make us happier than following this plan that God prepared for us. We live in a society that tells us to seek to live for ourselves that tells us to seek our own happiness. But, selfishness and ambitions can strangle your life out of you and leave you empty; only by following God we will be able to experience life to the fullest. As Jesus said: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

The truth is that God has a plan for each and every one of us. God desires our happiness through living holy lives. From the Catholic Catechism I read that through the Sacrament of Baptism each person receives a “call” or “vocation” from God to holiness and service.

Christmas Party

Christmas celebrations

Singing Christmas CarolsThe Choir Ministry performed their carol singing on 11 December 2016 at the Home of Loving Faithfulness in Sheung Shui which is a home for children with disabilities. The event was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Pau. It was an amazing and meaningful celebration which we surely will remember.

We were all amazed to see the brightness and happiness that were displayed in the eyes and faces of the children. They enjoyed every song and all the music which helped to open up their senses and minds. These children will truly remember the sounds of Christmas and be grateful for the blessing of the holiday season.

Christmas is a time to enjoy with our family and friends but most importantly celebrate the birth of Christ. These kids are gifts from God. We also spent the time with the children hoping that they could feel and appreciate the spirit of Christmas. We should teach our children about giving and sacrificing and Christmas provides a great opportunity for us to teach them to love others. Material gifts are not important. Christ, the Son of God, who sacrificed Himself for all mankind is God's gift to us. May God bless us all.

The annual pilgrimage organized by the Sodality of St. Joseph of our Parish took place from 13th to 19th December, 2016. It was a 7-day visit to Taiwan. 31 participants joined the event, including our parishioners and laities from other parishes. Although they came from different parishes, through solidarity, mutual love and prayers, all participants were able to receive much spiritual graces, making the whole pilgrimage a fulfilled one.

The pilgrimage started from south to north, and the itinerary was packed with a variety of activities. We kicked off the trip at “The Mount Beatitude” of Kaohsiung. It is established by Cardinal Paul Shan, SJ, the former Bishop of Kaohsiung. The Mount is quite a distance from town, and the surrounding environment is tranquil. Apart from having a church and a large-sized grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, there are also hotel-style living facilities which can be used for retreat and large scale religious formation activities. Our group stayed overnight and spent the evening in prayer and attending mass. They have gained a lot in spirituality.

The second focus spot of the pilgrimage is the “Catholic Sanctuary of Our Lady of Wufengchi” in Yilan County. It is a site believed to be the location of Our Lady’s apparition. The Sanctuary has a history of more than 30 years. The first eyewitnesses of the apparition were not Catholics, but a group of pagan hikers. There were 11 of them in total. In one of their mountain trekking, they lost their way back in the night darkness. While they were desperate, Our Lady came to their rescue. She inspired them and guided them to safety. Through the effort and testimony of these hikers and the support from the church leaders and the government, the “Villa of Our Lady”, once a simple wooden hut, had gradually developed into an elegant and sacred pilgrimage venue of present day’s scale. The Sanctuary is the last stop of our pilgrimage. We prayed and attended mass, spending a moment of sanctity and seclusion.

Although the other itineraries of this 7-day pilgrimage were also very interesting, with limited space, I could only choose these two focus spots in this article. For example, we held mass every day in different churches, including those in Kaohsiung, Taichung, Taipei and Yilan dioceses. We received warm welcome from Parish Priests and parishioners, making us feel being treated cordially. We also visited the Providence University in Taichung and

Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei. We also received similar affectionate and friendly receptions. Furthermore, we visited The Little Sister of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Taoyuan to get to understand the work of the sisters. This religious order was established b y F r . V i n c e n t L e b b e i n mainland China. Now, they are developing very well in Taiwan. They have preserved in their s e m i n a r y s o m e p r e c i o u s personal articles and relevant

historical documents left behind by Fr. Lebbe. We were indeed very fortunate to have the opportunity of appreciating these exhibits.

The reason why I chose to write about this pilgrimage in the Parish Newsletter is to let laities appreciate that pilgrimage tours organized by parishes are far more superior to those commercial sightseeing tours. Often times, you may not have the chance to attend mass on Sunday or even on solemn feast of obligation when traveling with a commercial tour. But, if you select pilgrimage tours organized by churches, you certainly will be taken care of both corporally and spiritually, so that you will be benefited in body, heart and soul. As the Spiritual Director of this pilgrimage, I have the privilege of spending moments of fruitfulness and joyfulness with the participants. I also experienced the unlimited merciful care of God and for this I have to express indefinite gratitude to Him. Deo gratias!
