    What is urban planning?

    Urban planning* (urban, city, and town planning)

    is a technical and political process concerned withthe control of the use of land and design of theurban environment, including transportationnetworks, to guide and ensure the orderlydevelopment of settlements and communities.

    It concerns itself with research and analysis,strategic thinking, urban design, publicconsultation, policy recommendations,implementation and management.

    1. Characterized by higher population density

    and vast human features in comparison toareas surrounding it.

    2. Urban areas may be cities, towns orconurbations, but the term is not commonly

    extended to rural settlements such as villagesand hamlets.

    Urban Area (Philippines)

    NEW OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF URBAN AREAS IN THE PHILIPPINES*

    1. If a barangay has a population size of 5,000 or more,then a barangay is considered urban, or

    2. If a barangay has at least one establishment with aminimum of 100 employees, a barangay is consideredurban, or

    3. If a barangay has 5 or more establishments with a

    minimum of 10 employees, and 5 or more facilitieswithin the two-kilometer radius from the barangayhall, then a barangay is considered urban.

    4. All barangays in the National Capital Region beautomatically classified as urban

    Metropolitan Area

    1. A metropolitan area is a region consisting of a

    densely populated urban core and its less-populatedsurrounding territories, sharing industry,infrastructure, and housing.

    2. Unlike an urban area, a metropolitan area includesnot only the urban area, but also satellite cities plusintervening rural land that is socio-economicallyconnected to the urban core city, typically byemployment ties through commuting, with theurban core city being the primary labor market.

    3. In fact, urbanized areas agglomerate and grow as thecore population/economic activity center within alarger metropolitan area or envelope.
