An Ikageng landlordmade a gruesomediscovery on Wednesday morning.

The owner of the Sekhute Streetproperty became concerned when hehad not seen the tenants living in hisback yard for several days. He had lastseen the couple, aged 22 and 37, onJuly 6.

At around 10:30 on Wednesdaymorning the landlord looked througha brokenwindow of the shack andwasshocked to discover the body of a manhanging from a piece of rope.

The police were immediately calledto the scene.

On arrival, the police found the wo-man lying on the bed with what see-med to be wounds from strangulationand the man suspended from the cei-ling as the landlord had described.They also discovered a suicide note.

the incident but said themotive for themysterious deaths is unknown. Atthis stage police are investigating a ca-

The IkagengPoliceneeds thecommu-nity’s assistance to indentify a body.According to the police they receiveda report of a murder at Sonderwaterarea at 17:00 on June 15. The bodywas of a half-naked man who wasfound in an open field.

The Ikageng Police correspondent,Const. Kelebogile Trom said, “Thebody was found lying next to rockshis face covered with grass. His leftear was bleeding and he was wearinga black T-shirt.”

At this stage no next of kin have co-me forward to confirm the identity ofthe deceased. The body is still at thePotchefstroom mortuary. sogenaamde straatkinders lastig gevalen geïntimideer.Leoné Phillipson, wat by R.J. Ver-

spreiders werk terwyl sy studeer, wasom 16:30 op pad huis toe,toe sy die twee kinderssien.Volgens Phillipson is

daar ‘n groep van hulle watal lank ‘n probleem is.“Ek het hulle weggejaag,

want hulle maak net moei-likheid hier om die win-kel” vertel Phillipson.Sy het in haar motor ge-

A taxi rolled on the R53 to Paryson Saturday evening about 20km from Potch.The driver lost control of the

vehicle when one of its tyresburst.As the vehicle rolled, one of the

passengers, a woman, was flungout of her seat. The vehicle cameto rest on its side, trapping thepatient’s foot between the tarmacand the side of the vehicle.A second passenger, a male,

For the last few days Potchefstroomhas been in thegrip of one of the coldest spells in more than threedecades. According to the SAWeather Services, thenight of 21 August 2003 was probably the coldestAugust night on record. Min mensebesef dat Wessels reeds in 2001 ‘n verslagoor inisiasie/ontgroening vir die Menseregte-kommissie geskryf het en daardie beginselsop die NWU kom toepas het; Buys het pro-beer om hulle belang, naamlik die Afrikaansekarakter, in die gesprek sterk na vore te druk.Dit is alles deel van aktiewe burgerskap en‘n vrye debat in ‘n land met spraakvryheid.

Croukamp maak ‘n fout as hy na die NWUverwys as soos ’n Afrikaner Bastion. DieNWU is ‘n universiteit wat deur middel van‘n nasionale plan 10 jaar gelede gevorm is endrie kampusse het. Hy kan meer akkuraatwees deur te verwys na die Potchefstroomkampus, maar selfs dit sou kwalik slaag asAfrikaner Bastion.

Daar is wel foute gemaak op die PotchKampus, maar regstellende optrede wordontwikkel. Die NWU het 60 000 studenteregoor Suid-Afrika en maak ‘n bydrae tot na-sionale ontwikkeling wat Hofmeyr se singvanDie Stemna ‘n baie klein gebeurtenis laatlyk. Ja, oorlewing eis sofistikasie, maar ditvereis allereers ‘n oopkop en ‘n begrip vir diekomplekse omstandighede waarin Suid-Afri-kaners eintlik uitstekend vaar.TheoVenter - politieke kommentator verbon-de aan die NWU.

The plea of hawkers to have properstalls over many years has finally beenheeded by the City Council.Tlokwe Municipality has approved

and appointed a contractor to upgradethe central taxi rank and build hawkerstalls for small business entrepreneursat a cost of R 4 769 549.This upgrade will take a period of six

months and temporary jobswill alsobecreated. The taxi rank will also have

public toilets.As for building other taxi ranks in the

township, the municipal spokesper-son, Willie Maphosa, stated that it isnot financially viable to build a taxirank for every ward.He said, “The municipality has built

pick-up points for taxis to use, on allits taxi routes. However, this initiativeproved not to be very successful astaxis still stop and pick up commutersanywhere along their routes.”After completion of the main taxi

rank, the municipality will be lookingat improving themain taxi ranks in Ika-geng and Promosa, including the Ex-tensions. Themunicipal spokespersonsaid, however, that the pace of this pro-gramme will be dictated by availablefunds provided for each year.Maphosa further stated that now that

and confronts issues that were previ-

ously ignored.”This film will be shot on a farm in

Viljoenskroon. It caters for South Afri-can audiences between the ages of 13and up. The director, Dani Van der

Westhuizen, went as faras saying it could be theRomeo and Juliet ofSouth Africa.“Starring in a movie

that is based on the Im-morality Act is a challen-ge, especially because it’sa very sensitive topic formany South Africans,”said Dimpo Mosala thelead actress.Louw explains that the

narrative tradition is notlike any other, it is an ex-traordinary teachingmet-hod of cultural differen-ces and challenges.

Twee studente in maatskaplikewerk wat tans besig is met hulleprofessionele blokpraktikum byNG Welsyn, het die afgelope week‘n vakansieprogram vir pleegkin-ders geloods.

Die program is opgedeel tussenlaer- en hoërskole. Die laerskool-projek is by Pudologo PrimêreSkool gehou en het gehandel oorgroepsdruk, boelie, goeie besluit-neming, hantering van negatieweemosies en die handhawing van ‘ngesonde rouproses.

Terwyl die die hoërskoolpro-gram wat by Seiphmelo Sekondê-re Skool gehou is beroepskeusesvir die toekoms bespreek het, hethoërskool leerlinge aanlegtoetse afgelê omhulle swak- en sterk punte te identifiseer.Nadie afloop vandie aanlegtoetse hetmen-se van verskeie beroepe met die leerlingekomgesels oorwat die beroepe behels.Dieweermag het hulle eie maatskaplike wer-kers gestuur, daar was ’n lid van die poli-sie, asook paramedici.

Die studente, Marista Barnard en Anikade Wet, het vir die leerlinge geskenkpak-kies uitgedeel wat inligting bevat oor hoeomby die verskillende beroepe uit te kom.

“Ons doelwit was om die kinders te helpomvoorbereid tewees deur hulle eie talen-te raak te sien, sodat hulle opgevoede be-sluite kan neem in terme van hulle eie toe-koms,” sê Barnard.

Studente van die maatskaplike fa-kulteit van die Noordwes-Universi-teit se Potchefstroomkampus offerhulle wintervakansie op om opvoed-kundige programme aan kindersvan Promosa te bied. Dit sluit vankleuters tot Graad 7-leerlinge in.Omdat Promosa ‘n tekort aan op-voedkundige programme gedurendevakansies het, het die studente ditgoed gedink om hierdie programmein Promosa aan te bied. Die kinders

baat dus nie net op opvoedkundigegebied nie, maar leer ook meer oorpersoonlike higiëne, hoe om vir dieomgewing om te gee, om verhou-dingsmet anderkinders te bou endithouhulle ookuit die kwaad.Die afge-lope week is reeds groot sukses be-haal vanaf 11:00 tot 13:00, danksydie volgende borge: Dis-Chem, AJR,Red Spot, Romy’s habby, Oasis,NWU Bemarking, Protea, Way For-ward, Megasave, FAMSA, Turkstra,Fatima Khan (van Prima Bakery) endie NWU se maatskaplike fakulteit.

Paddle Up… It’s Dragon Boat timeagain!

The second annual Dragon Boat Ra-cing Festival is fast approaching, and iflast year’s event is anything to go by,you are going to want to note 4 October2014 as the festival date.

The 2013 festival saw 20 teamscompeting for the title of overall win-ner. After a fantastic day of racing, thetitle was claimed by Masterclass, a Pot-chefstroom based group of friends.Funds raised from this event went to-wards a number of associations andcauses which were identified by the or-ganisers, the Rotary Club of Potchef-stroom Mooi.

The 2014 festival will once again behosted by the Potch Mooi Rotariansand will be held at Potch Dam. The fo-cus of the festival will be fundraising tosupport charitable causes, building re-lationships within the community andincreasing the awareness of breast can-cer. Interest in the festival has been im-mense and it is therefore planned that30 teams be accommodated in this ye-

ar’s event.The day will run in much the same

way as last year with a few changes tomake the day even a greater success.Teams that participated in the 2013festival have been invited to participateagain and will receive preference, pro-vided they enter early.

There are 10 additional places thatwill be allocated on a first come firstserve basis. New teams should enteras soon as these entries have been ope-ned. There are also advertising oppor-tunities on the day of the event andcompanies can use the contact detailsbelow for more information. Donationstowards the project will also be greatlyappreciated.

Potch Mooi Rotary Club is one of twolocal clubs and part of the internationalorganisation comprising 1.2 millionmembers in 34 430 clubs worldwide.It is a non-political, non-profit and ser-vice-orientated organisation of busi-ness and professional leaders, unitedin their endeavours to advance worldunderstanding, goodwill and peace.

Die Puk bergfietsspan het verledeweek in Pretoria aan die UniversiteitSport van Suid- Afrika (USSA) nasio-nale bergfietstoernooi deelgeneem,waar hul uitstekend presteer het.

Die Puk mansspan het ‘n derdealgehele posisie behaal wat hul besteprestasie nog was.

Die eerste dag van bergfietskom-petisie was ‘n 50 km vir mans en 40km vir vroue. In die oggend van dagtwee moes die mans 45 km aflê envroue 30 km. In die middag was daar‘n 20kmvirmans en15kmvir vroue.Die mans het op dag 3 ‘n 135 km

individuele wedren aangevat, waarPierre Smith ‘n tweede plek behaalhet en die vroue ‘n 90 km waar NikivanderSandt ‘n vierdeplek ingepalmhet.Op dag vier het die ryers ‘n 2.5 km

heuwel-klim by die die VoortrekkerMonument aangedurf en later diemiddag ‘n kriterium van 20 minutevir die vroue en 45 minute vir diemans. waar Niki van der Sandt enHeinrich Jacobs beide derde plekkebehaal het in hulle kategorieë.Daar was in hierdie hoogs kompe-
