ElisabethFlanders,LauraRouse,CynthiaCeciliaandMaryEuton.

Fromlefttoright:AlidaFrancis,thenieceofChristinaFlanders,IphraimCecilia,thesonofCynthiaCecilia,

ShandraandVanessaRouse,thetwogranddaughtersofLauraRouseandAmalia,thegranddaughterof

MaryEuton,cametohonourtheirfamilymembers,thefoundersoftheAuxilaryhome.

Mr.SjoukeBakker,presidentoftheboardoftheAuxilaryhome,tellsthestoryofthedevelopmentoftheauxilaryho

me.In1997ithoused12residentsandsomeofthemstillarelivingheretoday.Theauxilaryhomehasgrownoverthe

yearsandthewingsthatwereaddedinthepastwillbegiventhenamesofthefounders.Mr.Bakkeralsoexplained

what

is

going

to

happen

in

the

future.

After

the

merging

of

Queen

Beatrix

Medical

Centre

and

the

Auxilary

home,

there

willbeanewfoundation,whichwillhavenotieswiththelocalgovernment.FromJanuaryFirst,2010,theDutchMini

stryofVWSwilltaketheresponsibilityforhealthcare.Soon,theAuxilaryhomewillgetanewbus.

Avond op St.Eustatius,

Wat mooi is toch de aarde,die God voor ons heeft geschapen en bewaarde.Menig mens leeft er aan voorbij,

maar gelukkig niet voor mij.Ik zit in de tuin geheel alleen,

en kijkt stil om me heen.Daar komt langzaam de maan,

vanachter de vulkaan.Heel de aarde word verlicht,wat een prachtig gezicht.Ook zijn er vele sterren,te veel om ze te tellen.Wat mooi is toch de aarde,die God voor ons heeft geschapen en bewaarde.Daar staat een groepje bomen,in het gouden licht te dromen.

In de verte hoor je mensen zingen,over God zijn almachtige dingen.Er zijn mensen die het nog begrijpen.

Wat mooi is toch de aarde,die God voor ons heeft geschapen en bewaarde.

A POEMAND A P ICTURE

Buffet at Statia's Dump: "Have you eaten local meat lately"

This is a poem Jan de Jong wrote in1983, he was living on Statia for sixyears then. When he wrote thispoem, he was sitting behind his hou-se on the concrete roof of the cis-

tern. His house was where Marysolsbeauty salon is now in Fort Oran-

jestraat.
