「西京街道」とは京都から西へと延びた街道です。明治17年（1884）に発行された「丹波國多紀郡福住村誌」にも「西京街道」の記述が登場することから、古くからこの道は京都へ続く大通りとして丹波篠山の人々 に親しまれていたことが分かります。

Come visit Tamba Sasayama where traditional Japanese scenery and culture still remain.

The Saikyo-kaido route is the main road which connects western Kyoto and Tamba Sasayama. The name of the road appears in a public document written in 1884 by a local village officer which demonstrates that the road has long been the important traffic route for people traveling back and forth between the two cities.

江戸時代、宿場町として栄えた福住の町並み（重要伝統的建造物群保存地区）です。周辺には農村集落が広がります。

Sumiyoshi Shrine♴住吉神社Sumiyoshi Shrine♴住吉神社

主祭神の住吉大神は、農業・産業の神として広く崇敬されています。災害の防止と豊作を祈って1081年に創建されました。

The main deity of Sumiyoshi shrine has been worshiped as a god of agriculture and industry since its foundation in 1081. People pray for a good harvest and divine protection from natural disasters.

Fukusumi prospered as a post-town in the Edo period (1603 - 1868) and still maintains the classic atmosphere of that era. The townscape here is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government. Peaceful rural communities scatter around the main road.

住吉神社では、日本を代表する作庭家 重森三玲の枯山水「住之江の庭」が楽しめます。

Visit Sumiyoshi shrine and enjoy Suminoe garden, a dry landscape garden designed by Mirei Shigemori, one of the prominent garden designers in modern Japan.

“Karesansui”　枯山水

枯山水とは水を一切使わず山水の景色を表現する庭園様式のひとつで、主に石や砂のみで山水を表現します。住吉神社の重森三玲の「住之江の庭」は「海」を表現しています。縁側に座って心を落ち着けて耳を澄ませば、波の音が聞こえてくるようです。

Karesansui or a dry landscape garden is usually composed only of sand, gravel, rocks to represent mountains and water. The dry landscape garden in Sumiyoshi shrine imitates the ocean, so you may hear the sound of waves sitting in front of the garden in deep contemplation.

江戸時代、篠山藩は大坂と京都との交通の要衝である西京街道沿いの「福住村」を宿駅として指定しました。福住はその後、近世を通して宿場町として繁栄しました。大きな三角の屋根（妻入屋根）が街道に沿って連続する景観は、力強く美しい町並みを形成しています。

Sasayama domain designated Fukusumi as a post-station in the Edo period (1603 - 1868) because the village was located on an important strategic traffic route named Saikyo-kaido connecting Kyoto and Osaka. Fukusumi enjoyed a post-town prosperity until the early modern ages. The well-preserved old Japanese-style houses with large gable roofs along the main road are reminiscent of the prosperous post-town history.

Fukusumi is surrounded by mountains and boasts its abundant nature which conveys the charms of Japanese four distinct seasons. Black soybeans and paddy fields spreading against the lush mountains may evoke a nostalgic feeling that you rarely come across in modern Japan.

この城は、1609年に山陰道の要衝として築いた城です。篠山城大書院は一大名の書院としては破格の規模とされます。（日本100名城の一つとして人気 ）

Old Tamba Pottery Museum⑧丹波古陶館This museum houses a wide range of representative works of Tamba ware which has an 800-year history. Its “Old Ta m b a C o l l e c t i o n ” h a s received a Cultural Property des i gna t ion f rom Hyogo Prefecture.

約800年続く丹波焼の代表的な名品を展示する美術館です。（収蔵品中、「古丹波コレクション」312点は県指定文化財）

Taisho Roman Kan⑦大正ロマン館A s o u ve n i r s t o re a n d a restaurant located in the renova ted fo rmer town office building built in 1923 (during the Taisho period). A w i d e r a n g e o f Ta m b a Sasayama’s specialt ies are available here.

1923年に建築された篠山町役場の建物を改修しました。現在は丹波篠山の特産品などを取り揃えたお土産店です。

Homei Sake Brewery Museum⑤鳳鳴酒造(ほろ酔い城下蔵)This sake brewery and the adjoining living quarter were built in 1797 and used until 1975. Now renovated and converted into a museum, visitors can learn about sake making procedures. (Nation’s Tangible Cultural Property)

酒蔵と住居は、創業した1797年に建築されたもので、1975年まで使用されていた酒造りの現場を見学できます。（国登録有形文化財）

Castle Town Area　城下町エリアについて篠山城跡を中心とした城下町地区には、江戸時代の武家屋敷や河原町妻入商家群（重要伝統的建造物群保存地区）が残されています。

In the castle town area, you can enjoy both samurai and merchant houses built in the Edo period (1603 - 1868)※The merchant houses are located in the Kawaramachi District which has been given an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings designation by the Japanese government.

In 1818, Tadayasu Aoyama, the then lord of Sasayama, invited Kinkodo Kisuke, a ceramic artist, to establish a pottery venue for his domain. The kiln, however, was closed down after a mere 50 years of operation, and ceramic pieces produced here had gradually become hard-to-get until the kiln was finally restored in 1988. The restored kiln, the Ojiyama Ceramic Factory, is situated at the foot of Mt.Ojyama, the same site the old kiln used to be located.

You can see nine festival floats strolling around the castle town, where Togyo processions carry portable shrines while drums are beaten. 丹波の祇園さんと呼ばれるこの祭は、8基の鉾山が田んぼの中を御旅所へ向かうその景観の素晴らしさと、3年に一度、胡瓜山の上で奉納される「デコノボウ」という素朴な人形芝居が見どころです。

５基の山車が宮入りした後、神前で奉納される４地区の「打込囃子」が見どころです。水無月とは旧暦6月の事で、もともとは6月晦日に行われていたことから、この名がついています。

The highlight of this festival is “uchikomi-bayashi,” a festive music played with traditional Japanese instruments by the locals from four neighborhoods. The four groups have their own characteristic performance style and festival float; some of which perform on their float, and others dedicate the music on the main stage of the shrine. The name of the festival “Minazuki” (June) derives from the old lunar calendar since the festival was originally celebrated in the month of June.

夏「丹波篠山デカンショ祭」

開催日 10月初～中旬

丹波篠山の特産品「丹波篠山黒枝豆」、「丹波栗」、「丹波篠山牛の丸焼き」などが味わえる味覚の祭典です。

開催日 8月15日、16日

民謡「デカンショ節」にあわせて踊る盆踊りの祭典です。打ち上げ花火や、巨大屋台村などが楽しめます。

毎年1月1日の午前0時20分頃から、黒岡春日神社能舞台で開かれる、国内で最も早い演能です。

丹波篠山の自然とイベントついて

丹波篠山の地酒は、丹波盆地に発生する丹波霧と肥沃な土壌がはぐくんだ良質な丹波篠山米と丹波篠山の水を使った日本酒です。酒造りのプロ集団「丹波杜氏」が手掛けます。

「杜氏」とは、日本酒造りの最高責任者のことです。丹波杜氏の歴史は古く、400年程前にさかのぼります。丹波篠山の冬は雪深く、農業だけでは生活が厳しかったため、農民は冬のあいだ出稼ぎで酒造りをしてきました。丹波杜氏は、南部杜氏、越後杜氏とともに日本三大杜氏の一つに数えられています。

Sake brewed in Tamba Sasayama are made from pure water and high-quality rice cultivated in the fertile soil under favorable climate conditions. Tamba Toji, a group of master brewers, undertake this delicate job to ensure the quality of their products.

Toji refer to master sake brewers. The origin of toji in Tamba Sasayama dates back as far as 400 years ago. Villagers had to take on a second job as a sake brewer to make ends meet during the winter season because of the heavy snow that often brought a poor harvest to the region. Now, Tamba toji are considered to be the three major toji along with Nambu and Echigo counterparts.

篠山城跡周辺には、大正天皇の即位を記念して植えられたソメイヨシノがおよそ1000本あり、桜の名所として知られています。

Celebrate sakura at the precincts of Sasayama Castle where approximately 1000 cherry trees were planted in commemoration of the Emperor Taisho's enthronement.

Enjoy Bon festival dance to “Dekansho-bushi,” a representative folk song of this region. Soak up festivities visiting the numerous gourmet stalls and watching the spectacular fireworks show.

Kuromame (Black soybeans)　丹波篠山黒豆Kuromame, or black soybeans cultivated in Tamba Sasayama is said to be the finest of all produced in Japan. This plumpy, sweet, and lustrous soybeans were often chosen as a tribute to the bakufu, or the feudal government in the Edo period (1603-1868) and gradually became popular nationwide. Kuro-edamame, or young black soybeans harvested before fully ripened are also excellent.

黒豆の中でも「丹波篠山黒豆」は大粒で甘く、色つやも美しい最高級品です。江戸時代(1603～1868年)には幕府への献上品になったことから、丹波篠山黒豆が日本各地へ広まりました。成熟前の若さやを食べる黒枝豆も絶品です。

Botan-nabe (Wild boar hot pot)　丹波篠山の猪肉Botan-nabe is a wild boar hot pot dish served during the autumn and winter seasons in Tamba Sasayama. The name of the dish comes from botan (peony) that resembles the color and shape of wild boar meat thinly sliced and beautifully arranged on a large plate.

ぼたん鍋は猪の肉を使った丹波篠山の秋冬限定の鍋料理です。名前の由来は、大皿に並べた肉が牡丹の花のような形と色だからといわれています。

Tamba Sasayama Brand Rice　丹波篠山米In Tamba Sasayama, most of the paddy fields spread around mountains. Sunlight sufficient for photosynthesis during the daytime helps rice grain to generate starch; and cold air flowing down from the mountains at night encourages rice ears to tighten themselves to condense their rich flavor. Thanks to those blessings of nature, Tamba Sasayama continues to produce high quality rice. During the harvest season, you will be overwhelmed by the breathtaking view of the golden waves of rice ears in the paddy fields against the lush mountains.

丹波篠山の田園は、田のすぐ近くに山がせまる立地が多いのが特徴的です。昼は陽の光を浴びて育ち、光合成ででんぷんが蓄えられ、夜は山から流れる冷気で穂が締まりうまみが凝縮されます。このくり返しで上質なお米が誕生します。収穫前、黄金色に輝く稲穂と山々の情景は圧巻です。

Yamanoimo (Japanese yam)　山の芋Yamanoimo has a sleek pure-white texture under the coarse skin surface. When peeled and grated, it becomes extremely sticky. Popular local recipes featuring this yam include “tororo-jiru” or a miso soup topped with grated yam; and “tororo-gohan” or a bowl of rice topped with a mixture of grated yam and soy sauce enriched with Japanese broth. Yamanoimo is also used as an ingredient of wagashi (Japanese sweets) because the strong stickiness is ideal for some traditional sweets.

皮をむくと純白で、擦りおろすと強いねばりがあります。地元では味噌汁にとろろをうかべる「とろろ汁」や、だし汁と一緒にご飯にかける「とろろごはん」が定番です。また強いねばりは和菓子店でも評価され、和菓子づくりに重用されています。

Shinto rituals much influenced by Kyoto culture have been handed down from generation to generation here in Tamba Sasayama. We will explore the traditional culture by visiting time-honored local shrines and experience Shinto traditions.

Tamba Sasayama is a charming bucolic town. I enjoyed learning Japanese history and culture here. One of my favorite places is Houmei Sake Brewery Museum. They gave us an opportunity not only to become familiar with the history of sake making and their antique equipment, but also to taste

their fine sake. I really love this place.

丹波篠山は日本の歴史や文化を体験できる大変美しい田舎の小さな町です。とくにほろ酔い城下蔵は酒造りの歴史や道具が見られて日本酒のティスティングもでき、とても素晴らしい。

In Kawaramachi and Okachimachi, you can feel the authentic atmosphere of Edo. They have handsome s t ree t s and traditional architecture. Less crowded than Kyoto, I enjoyed peaceful moments here and I felt like I found my best-kept secret.

河原町妻入商家群や御徒士町通りは美しい古い町並みが残っており、日本の「江戸時代」の雰囲気が感じられます。京都のように混雑していないので静かに楽しめ、自分しか知らない特別な場所を発見した気分になります。

I enjoyed a wonderful sunset at Makekira i Inar i shr ine . Walking through the nearby street featuring the houses of merchants of Edo, I felt as if I

had gone back in time.

王地山まけきらい稲荷は夕方が似合う素敵な場所だった。河原町妻入商家群も趣きがあり良い時間が過ごせた。

This is my second visit. I love this rural atmosphere and numerous loca l de l i gh t s , especially black soybeans.

丹波篠山市の雰囲気が好きで2度目の訪問。田舎らしさと美味しいものが沢山あるところを気に入っている。黒大豆がおいしかった。

Sumiyoshi shrine is a really beautiful place. Shigemori’s g a r d e n m a d e my h e a r t stand still. I lost myself in a philosophical musing for a

while.

住吉神社はとても美しい神社だった。重森三玲の庭は静かで心が落ち着く。哲学を感じて面白い。

Tamba Sasayama is a good old town for foreign tourists to learn what Japan is all about. It's really wonderful to explore local food culture.

丹波篠山は、世界から見た日本の文化を見ることが出来る古き良き町。ローカルな食文化に触れられるところも良い。

Tamba Sasayama is a city with abundant nature and quiet with less tourists. I’m gonna recommend my friends Houmei Sake Brewery Museum because this place offers various kinds of sake tasting!

丹波篠山は豊かな自然があり、観光客がそれほど多くなく、ゆったりと楽しめるところが素晴らしい町。ほろ酔い城下蔵はテイスティングができるので、ぜひ友達にもお勧めしたいスポット。
