Dear Reader,

We at the editorial board welcome you to this third issue of SPHOTA,a multi-lingual culturalmagazine that runs with the spirit ofVSRCians.

This eagerly-awaited issue of SPHOTAhas come out after a year, as it should be. This hasbeen possible for the co-operation we got from the boarders. This issue of SPHOTA isdedicated forthe SPHOTAwho came for problems ofVSRC without being in busy schedulesof research and project works. SPHOTA,which is our platform for impressionism in wordsand pictures, is back! The words have lived and the pictures did not fade! To quote from thefamous PearlJam song Alive,

You're still alive, she saidOh, and do I deserve to be

Is that the question?And if so...if so... who answers ...who answers ...I, oh, I'm still alive!

This edition of SPHOTAis, therefore, sustaining the victory for each VSRCian.

I am overwhelmed to see the huge response that we have got for SPHOTAfrom my fellow-boarders and ex-boarders also. Unfortunately, we have been unable to include all theentries that we received in this issue of SPHOTA.The only and sole reason for this is theever-bulging size of SPHOTA.I would personally like to congratulate the authors of all theentries for a commendable piece of work and helping keep up with the spirit ofparticipation.

We VSRCians would definitely love SPHOTAto live long - both in spirit and in memory.Therefore, we have already started planning for the next issue of SPHOTA.And for this, themain stimulus has to come from my fellow boarders. Did you miss this year's deadline forSPHOTA?Were you too busy with your project or thesis work? Then, why not take up the

VSRChas always been a place for people across the length and breadth of India, all coming

with many dreams, aspirations, ideas and languages. Language provides a medium to

express our ideas, visions and feelings. Each language has its own way of feeling a much

known world. This uniqueness is expressed in SPHOTAthough its multil ingualism. SPHOTAis

aimed to nurture this uniqueness of diversity of languages and impressionism. SPHOTAis a

burst with an instantaneous flash of creation.

SPHOTAis our endeavor to capture the harmonious existence of scientists with their unique

way of thinking and expressing their knowledge of their surroundings.

If Einstein Were a PlumberSumit Maheshwari

"If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make my living, Iwould not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher. I would rather choose to bea plumber or a peddler in the hope to find the modest degree of independence stillavailable under pressure circumstances."

In a letter byAlbert Einstein to the editor ofThe Reporter about the situation of

scientists inAmerica (13 October 1954).

Inthe vol.2 ofJSTOR,ofautumn 1960, I found the following interesting lines on

page no. 69-79:

"The analogy of a plumber to a religious researcher seems relevant on two

levels: first, a plumber isusually calledwhen the client first notices something wrong in

the form ofa faulty faucet or a leaky pipe and he iscalled in reference to the faucet or the

leak, not the whole house. Second, a plumber isproblem solver; that is,he isexpected to

fixthe faucets or the leaks, not merely to diagnose the situation and present the facts."

The journal then became a talking matter.

"Do-it-yourself", is a mantra of a good researcher. A hands-on experience is

thus expected. Agood plumber isonewho has hands on experience too.

Plumber has to deal with different types of drawings and sketches to deal withany layout and should be able to estimate the work. A researcher has the same

requirements, but the estimate ofwork islittle fuzzy.

Agood plumber should be able to dictate the work to fellow plumbers. Need I

say that a good researcher should have leadership qualities too, so as to instruct other

scholars and to be an outstanding investigator?

The plumber should know how to use tools. Feel free to think the same about a

researcher.

The Einstein's sentence became very popular during that time and after this

remark was reported, the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union A.F.L.in Washington D.C.

voted to grant Einstein an honorary membership, and a New York plumbers' local

presented him with a gold-plated set ofplumbers' tools.

The heart beats with the music in your voice,Time as if comes to a halt.The earth becomes synonymous with you,Can't blame it as my fault.

Daybegins with the plan to be together,Ends with thinking how I missed the chance.

Daydreaming with a cigarette outside the gate,Standing alone just to have a glance.

And then came along the cruel Autumn evening,Yousay that someone else is waiting for you.Thus, endeth the warmth that had come with Spring,Thus, loseth every hope, although they were few.

Allthese nights, in these years,What I've gathered are frozen tears.When the soul becomes heavy to bear,

Only solace are my frozen tears.

It's not hard to bear the pain, or to be alone,But the realization that you have to be.Love denies to see the distance between two --Itwas impossible, I always knew.

I find myself lost in a generation of slaves.

Visionaries lecture about globalization.

So brothers traveling far and wide

Is the grass really greener on the other side?

Somust I dream of Harvard, MITand Berkeley anymore?

Since they shall only add to the daily chores.
