Editor’s Note: Hey Guys, it’s your new editor Joelle Chaves!

I am so excited to welcome all of you to a new Key Club Year! First of all I just want to thank our immediate past board for getting Key Club to where it is now! They are the reason that we got Key Club back up to one of the biggest clubs in our school! If you see them anywhere give them a big high-five and ask them how they feel!

Now you might be wondering what this newsletter is for. It’s the board’s way of highlighting past events, giving recognition to members that have gone above and beyond and breaking the wall between communicating and connecting. We want to show how much we appreciate you guys coming to the events and meetings by putting you guys on a newsletter that will be seen by the home club, the division and maybe even the whole New York District!

That’s enough of an introduction! Let’s get down to business! Make sure you check out the rest of the newsletter to learn about what the other Key Clubbers have been up to!

Yours in Service, Joelle Chaves 2014-2015 Bulletin Editor Benjamin N. Cardozo Key Club New York District Division 8

I  have  always  been  an  avid  children  lover  throughout  my  life.  I  believe  that  it  stemmed  from  the  fact  that  I  am  the  only  child,  which  causes  me  to  be  lonely  at  times.  I  was  elated  when  I  found  out  that  there  would  be  a  Toddler  Olympics  held  at  Bayside  High  School  on  April  12th!  I  not  only  experienced  the  joy  of  working  with  children  but  also  bonded  with  other  key  clubbers  within  my  division.  I  believed  that  this  event  was  a  great  “ice  breaker”  to  the  start  of  a  new  service  year!  It  was  a  great  opportunity  for  me  to  get  to  know  other  individuals  with  the  same  passion  as  I  do!  Furthermore,  just  to  add  an  extra  cherry  on  top,  I  made  a  new  friend!  His  name  is  Andrew  and  he  is  a  jubilant  three  year  old  who  made  my  day  the  best  volunteer  event  I  could  ever  ask  for!  Bayside  High  School  did  a  great  job  with  this  fundraising  event  for  the  Eliminate  Project  and  I  can’t  wait  to  attend  2015’s  Toddler’s  Olympics!

            -‐Kelly  Song

The  Amazing  Race  has  not  failed  to  surprise  me  once  again.  April  19th  was  a  day  of  adventures  in  the  city.  It  was  my  third  time  going  to  an  Amazing  Race.  I  found  it  so  amazing  to  see  so  many  people  come  together  to  an  event.  I  really  loved  seeing  different  Key  Clubbers  from  different  clubs  of  different  divisions.  My  team,  Princess  and  her  Knights,  ran  in  Riverside  Park,  Bryant  Park,  Times  Square,  and  Central  Park  to  tackle  down  challenges  to  get  to  the  finish  line.  Although  several  challenges,  like  finding  checkpoints  to  get  the  next  clue,  held  us  back,  it  was  still  an  amazing  experience.  One  unforgettable  memory  was  struggling  to  find  the  first  checkpoint.  The  first  challenge  involved  finding  hidden  volunteers  within  Riverside  Park.  We  had  to  use  the  clues  to  go  to  certain  locations  to  get  the  volunteers’  signatures  on  the  paper.  After  wandering  for  almost  40  minutes,  we  finally  found  the  checkpoint.  Although  it  was  frustrating  and  had  difficult  challenges,  I  really  had  a  great  time!  I  felt  like  I  was  competing  on  the  actual  TV  show!  The  committee  definitely  didn’t  disappoint  me,  I  can’t  wait  till  next  year!

          -‐Michelle  Tam

The  March  of  Dimes  walk  on  April  27th  was  an  event  fundraising  for  research  to  end  premature  birth,  birth  defects,  and  infant  mortality.  We  walked  3  miles  around  the  city  in  the  middle  of  the  streets  while  the  police  controlled  the  cars  to  ensure  everyone’s  safety.  Many  of  my  friends  joined  me  at  this  event  and  we  walked/ran  together  and  joked  around.  It  is  honestly  a  really  great  experience  to  see  the  city,  bond  with  friends,  and  contribute  to  a  good  cause.  The  walk  was  also  amazing  because  of  the  food  (Food  is  life).  There  was  a  lot  of  free  food  before  and  after  the  walk  like  applesauce,  water,  ice  cream,  munchkins,  coffee,  etc.  My  favorite  part  of  the  event  was  at  the  end,  when  we  got  balloons  that  were  twisted  into  swords  and  flowers,  which  we  used  to  hit  each  other  and  fool  around  with.

Let’s Shine a Light on: NYCAASC By: Gulam Islam

I woke up this day dreading why I had signed up for this event. With eyes as heavy as my bed sheets, red as the color of my alarm clock waking up a Saturday morning for an event was something I did not want to do. Especially, after coming home at 10 because of an orientation and on top of that the MTA screwing me over. I would’ve never imagined that with all that had lead up to this event, I would’ve never imagined that this would be my favorite event up until this point in my Key Club career.

On April 26th, I attended the New York City Asian American Student Conference (NYCAASC), not only as a volunteer but also as your atypical Asian American. During the day I had done the typical jobs of a volunteer, I moved boxes directed attendees, go on coffee runs, set up breakfast and lunch tables, deliver gifts and clean up workshops. You would assume this to be tedious but I, surprisingly, enjoyed this event because of the hospitality coming from all my fellow clubbers, and attendees. NYCAASC wasn’t just a conference for serious matters; it was an extremely enjoyable experience. In between jobs I was able to sit in some workshops, where I learned about the problems of undocumented Americans, how to start a movement (including south Asians, like myself) and by far the most insightful workshop about becoming spiritually connected to our ancestors. The #1 highlight about this event would have to be the closing ceremony, which had performances from the dance group, Project Serendipity, musical performances by Sung Lee, Pocholo Valderrama, Ivan Polanco, and last but not least, Asian American rapper, and actor MC Jin. I, myself have an affinity for beat-boxing and producing music, and having a conversation with him was about to make this the most memorable event. However, MC Jin took that spot with his performances and meet and greet. NYCAASC started as a reluctant choice but ended up to be the event of my lifetime. At this end of this event, I was able to strengthen relationships and create new bonds with key clubbers all around the city. I will never forget the events that occurred this day. Things such as learning about the lives of Asian Americans, to being on stage with MC Jin, to scaring the life out of the president. NYCAASC is definitely going to be the most memorable event. Its event like these that makes me love Key Club.

Member Of The Month

This  month,  Jane  Park  is  our  member  of  the  month.  She  has  always  gone  above  and  beyond  when  it  came  to  anything  Key  Club.  You  can  ask  anyone  who  has  ever  gone  to  an  event  with  her,  that  she’s  always  fun  to  be  with  and  that  she  takes  it  seriously  at  the  same  time!  She  has  dedicated  so  much  of  her  time  to  our  club.  The  kindness  just  oozes  out  of  this  girl!  Make  sure  when  you  see  her  around  you  tell  her  thanks  for  being  such  a  good  person,  and  ask  her  how  she  feels!  Thank  you  Jane  for  being  the  amazing  and  good  person  that  you  are!  You  represent  what  Key  Club  is  all  about,  caring.

All About April On  April  12,  I  went  along  with  a  couple  of  other  Key  Club  members  to  Prospect  Park  to  help  out  at  Purple  Strides,  an  event  against  pancreatic  cancer.  Despite  being  a  little  late,  we  still  arrived  before  all  the  runners  came  in  to  register.  Working  at  the  registry  tent,  my  duty  was  to  accept  from  the  runners  and  walkers  and  give  them  shirts  and  pins  and  sashes.  It  was  a  refreshing  feeling  to  volunteer  at  an  event  instead  of  walking  mile  after  mile.  The  whole  day  went  by  smoothly,  and  I  even  got  to  hear  some  cool  stories  of  people  running  for  their  family  members!  I  will  definitely  be  attending  next  year!

          -‐Joelle  Chaves

The  member  of  the  month  is  someone  has  worked  a  lot,  for  so  very  little  in  return.  So  we  want  to  take  them  by  giving  them  their  own  little  piece  in  the  newsletter!

AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Hey  Cardozo  Key  Club!

I’m  feeling  so  pumped  after  going  to  LTC  to  learn  so  much  more  about  Key  Club.  I  really  hope  that  you  guys  are  as  excited  as  I  am  to  kick  off  another  year  of  amazing  service.  I  hope  that  I  can  be  the  best  possible  president  as  I  can  be;  I  won’t  let  you  guys  down.  We  will  work  together  to  create  a  successful  and  fun  year  for  you  guys!

You  guys  never  fail  to  surprise  me  with  the  amount  of  enthusiasm  you  guys  show  by  showing  up  to  events.  I’m  so  glad  that  we  were  able  to  connect  with  Kiwanians  by  helping  out  at  a  park  clean  up  for  Kiwanis  One  Day.  I  was  happy  to  see  a  few  of  you  show  up  at  the  Toddler  Olympics  as  we  continue  to  fight  against  MNT,  and  contribute  to  the  Eliminate  Project.  Volunteering  at  Purple  Strides  against  Pancreatic  Cancer  was  one  of  those  events  that  made  me  feel  really  good  inside.  I  hope  you  guys  were  able  to  feel  that  content  feeling  of  knowing  that  you  helped  out  someone,  even  if  it  was  just  handing  them  a  bottle  of  water.  Although  there  were  a  few  complications  during  the  Amazing  Race,  I  hope  you  guys  still  enjoyed  it  as  much  as  I  did.  I’m  so  glad  that  we  attended  NYCAASC,  not  only  because  we  were  able  to  meet  MC  Jin,  but  we  were  also  able  to  meet  with  others  of  different  backgrounds  and  ethnicities.  I  was  so  happy  being  able  to  see  so  many  of  you  show  up  for  the  March  of  Dimes;  it  was  really  successful  and  I  hope  you  guys  enjoyed  walk  in  the  amazing  weather.

As  the  nice  weather  is  slowly  coming  up  and  summer  is  just  right  around  the  corner,  I  hope  you  guys  can  continue  to  commit  and  serve  your  community  as  well  as  you  guys  have  already  been.  I  really  want  to  thank  you  guys  for  always  being  so  active  and  excited  for  events.  I  hope  that  we  won’t  disappoint  you  and  I  hope  that  Key  Club  can  leave  a  positive  impact  on  your  life,  no  matter  how  big  or  small  it  is.  Thank  you  guys  for  always  being  so  amazing  and  showing  up  to  events  no  matter  how  early  we  have  to  get  up  in  the  morning.  I  hope  you  guys  can  see  that  the  2014-‐2015  Cardozo  Key  Club  board  is  doing  their  best  to  make  Key  Club  fun,  show  that  doing  service  and  giving  to  others  is  one  of  the  best  feelings  in  the  world,  and  make  stronger  friendships  because  we  are  a  family.  I  hope  to  see  you  guys  at  the  upcoming  events  like  the  AIDS  Walk,  Color  Run,  and  Relay  for  Life!  Happy  Key  Clubbing!

Yours  in  service,

Cardozo  Key  Club  President  2014-‐2015
