T he Campaign begins with these three impor-tant words: America, God, Freedom. Threewords that almost guarantee incumbency to

any US politician who mentions them.

Here in the Philippines theequivalent would be Dios,Bayan, Pamilya. And yes,politicians here mention thosewords with impunity whetherat the Senate, the barangayhall or the church pulpit.Mention those words andyou’re automatically on thegood side.

Will Ferrel’s latest comedytakes advantage of that ideaand takes a dig at the US elec-tions which of late has turnedinto a corrupt, cruel andsometimes outright bizarreshow. Kind of like ours.

Ferrel plays Cam Brady, are-electionist Democrat con-gressman in the traditionallyDemocratic-leaning state ofNorth Carolina where he isrunning unopposed for his nthterm. Brady’s campaign takesa nose-dive after an indiscre-tion is leaked publicly. Thisprompts big-business-interestbillionaires to fund an unas-suming, soft-spoken, born-to-wealth Marty Huggins (ZachGalifianakis) to run under theconservative Republican partyand challenge Brady.

The comedy runs situationafter situation where the ex-perienced politician tries toout-politic the newbie, untilthe inner tiger in Hugginspushes Brady to the wall, upto the point where one can nolonger distinguish which can-didate deserves to earn the ti-

tle Honorable.I wouldn’t want to glorify

this as a true satire, in thesense that The Campaign takesan absurdist approach to themudslinging associated withdirty political campaigns, butdoesn’t actually comment onreal political issues that wouldprovoke discussion. Ferrel andGalifianakis are game withtheir roles, but Dermott Mul-roney is the third personalityin the film as master manipu-lator and campaign managerextraordinaire Tim Wattley.

Gets my vote at portrayingwhat we, non-Americans, al-ready know: how laughableAmerican politics has become.Like ours.
