Martin keeps mumabout ‘ASAP’ no-show

His fans are worried becauseof the following tweets thatMartin had posted:

“Loyalty, faithfulness, beingthere from the first day. None ofthese matter. All you need is aloud, demanding manager.”

“You wanna know the sadtruth? Only if you have apersistent manager canyou get the treatment youwish you had.”

“It’s better to be adiva pala. You reallyknow who yourfriends are when youare at your lowest. The rest just thinkof themselves.Fame keeps themaway.”Not about Sarah

I clarified the is-sue with Mart. As al-ways, he answered intrue gentleman fashion.

“Please, please let’snot make this aboutSarah. Because it really isnot. I love Sarah,” Mart ex-plains. “I am not hurt because Iwas pushed aside in ASAP byanyone. In fairness to the show, they had a number for me witha video to greet me for my an-niversary. It was I who decidedto be absent. To comment fur-ther on why I didn’t show uplast Sunday would be a sign ofweakness.”

He insists that he’s “not oneto make demands,” nor does he“count his every accolade in or-der to assure his or her place ona Sunday afternoon party. But Iam only human.”

Be that as it may, Mart reit-erates his heart will always bewith ASAP.

“I have been offered overand over again to move to other

networks but my loyalty has al-ways been with my Kapamilya,”he points out. “But in ourworld, what does loyalty meananyway?”

Let’s celebrate his 29th an-niversary and catch his show,Martin Nievera: Tribute at theNewport Performing Arts The-ater of Resorts World on July 16and Sept. 2. After all, his songsmake up the soundtrack of ourlives.

Martin will be singing stan-dards from Frank Sinatra, TomJones, Dean Martin andMichael Jackson, plus timelessOPM hits from composersGeorge Canseco, Willy Cruzand Louie Ocampo.

As Martin’s Twitter name“4eversinging4u” connotes, hewill keep singing his heart outfor his fans and his passion forhis craft.

Where’sthe boss?

Why was Boss Vic delRosario conspicuously ab-sent at the Araneta Colise-um for Vice Ganda’sconcert which he pro-duced?

Rumor has it thatBoss Vic is peeved atthe comedian’s al-leged attitude prob-lem.

Heard that Vicedemanded a specialfront row section tobe added for hisrelatives, and thathe would curse who-ever sits there aside

from his family.Onlookers insist that

Vice threw his weightaround during technical

rehearsals which almostled to the walkout of thedirector. Perhaps it wasjust brought about by thepreconcert tension.

“I just had an importantappointment that day,”Boss Vic clarifies. “Vivamight do a repeat.”

There are always twosides to a story. So what’sit gonna be, Vice? Naughtyor nice?

Pacman’snew game

Manny Pacquiao is setto transform lives whilebringing entertainment tothe whole family in MannyMany Prizes starting July16 after 24 Oras on GMA

Ramos, Isabelle Daza, PaoloContis, Gladys Guevarra andOnyok Velasco.

Through engaging segments, the Filipino icon brings hopeand cheers to deserving Pinoysby giving them once-in-a-life-time opportunities.

By Dolly Anne Carvajal

F ANS of Martin Nievera wonder why the singer’s29th anniversary celebration at ASAP didn’tpush through last Sunday. Did the ABS-CBN

noontime show give way instead to Sarah Geronimo’scomeback?

GETTING READY: GreenArchers do the ‘‘twist’’ atthe Enrique M. Razon SportsCenter. ARNOLD ALMACEN

‘‘I know it’s going to be a biggame,” said Slaughter, also aSmart Gilas national teammainstay.

‘‘I’ve been talking to my Gilasteammates Chris (Tiu) and JV(Casio), asking about their ex-periences and getting it fromboth sides. They all said thesame thing ‘‘how you get ner-vous, how you try to stay calm, but you never know until you’reout there.”

That’s an understatement, ofcourse, as Ateneo coach Nor-man Black said himself.

‘‘It’s always a big game whenwe play La Salle, but we’ll beready,” said Black.

The Blue Eagles, on a questfor a fourth straight champion-ship, put their rivalry with theGreen Archers to an early testthis season.

‘‘What they have differentfrom last year is they havesize, so it’s going to be anothertough game for us,” saidBlack, just a week after his Ea-gles rallied to slip past Adam-son, 55-51.

The Green Archers—comingoff a 74-65 setback against

last’s year runner-up Far EasternUniversity—added heft andheight with 6-foot-8 Arnold VanOpstal and fellow rookies 6-6Norbert Torres and 6-5 PonsoGotladera. Papot Paredes, 6-foot-6, remains a force in theshaded lane.

La Salle coach DindoPumaren, however, knows it’sstill different when you have atyour disposal a 6-foot-11 talentlike Slaughter, who slaughteredthe Falcons with 23 points, eight rebounds, two assists anda couple of blocks.

‘‘We have to contest their of-fense at the post,” saidPumaren, who also listed Ate-neo veterans Nico Salva andKirk Long and rookie KieferRavena on his watchlist.

‘‘We have to pressure them.Even if we added size, our assetis still our quickness.”

Black, of course, got that onhis own checklist.

‘‘Break the press,” notedBlack. ‘‘Whenever you play LaSalle, that’s number one. Youhave to try to limit yourturnovers and try to break theirpressure to score.”

R AVENA. Parks. Slaughter. Their names are al-ready familiar. But the moment they step intothe hardcourts of the country’s premier varsity

hoops league, expect their stick to skyrocket.Kiefer Ravena, son of for-

mer PBA star Bong Ravena, has been the most heraldedrookie in UAAP Season 74 andhis bloodline is only part ofthe reason. The 5-foot-11swingman has anchoredcountless Ateneo stints duringhis high school days and theBlue Eagles are eagerly antici-pating him to further reachfor his ceiling in the seniorsquad.

Ray Parks Jr., a nationallyranked high school prospect inthe US who got several collegeoffers, also has a familiar blood-line. He is the son of seven-timePBA Best Import awardee Bob-by Parks and his entry to one-time perennial cellar-dwellerNU has turned the Bulldogs intoinstant Final Four favorites.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas main-stay Greg Slaughter will battlefor his share of the spotlightthis season too as he partnerswith Ravena to boost the Ea-gles.

But while the six-foot-11Slaughter won’t be eligible forrookie of the year honors, hemay line himself up for an evenbigger award: The league MVP.

Ateneo’s fierce rival, La Salle, will also have its share of high-profile rookies out to prove thatthe Green Archers are also legit-imate Final Four contenders.

La Salle boasts 6-foot-8Arnold Van Opstal, 6-6s NorbertTorres and Papot Paredes and 6-5 Ponso Gotladera.

“We added size, but we stillmaintained our speed,” saidLa Salle coach DindoPumaren, who will also bankon his mainstays SimonAtkins, Luigi dela Paz andJoseph Marata.

The battle of high-profilerookies will be an intriguing

sub-plot in the Ateneo-La Sallederby as the mortal enemiessquare off for the first time onSaturday.

While Ravena seems to bethe favorite for the Rookie ofthe Year trophy, it wouldn’t bewise to discount UST’s KevinFerrer. Ferrer, a former juniorsMVP with the Tiger Cubs, is al-so expected to make an immedi-ate contribution for UST andturn the ROY race into a two-man contest.

UST, which is celebrating itsquadricentennial anniversary, will rely heavily on the lankysix-foot-four Ferrer, an in-side/outside guy who can playmultiple positions for theGrowling Tigers.

Coach Pido Jaerncio will al-so have more reasons to smileabout with another prizednewcomer that will addressthe Tigers’ need for a bigman.

Karim Ab-dul, a stocky6-6 Cameroo-nian, givesUST a truecenter itlacks.

“He im-proves on adaily basisand is veryactive,” com-mended Jarencio. “He’s themissing link for the squad.”

Another newcomer expectedto chip in is Chris Tolomia ofFEU.

Tolomia, an athletic tweener, adds depth to the already load-ed guard rotation of the Tama-raws, who still have reigningMVP RR Garcia and TerrenceRomeo running the show.

New names, big games. Watchout for them in Season 74.

Look out for ‘NC’ newbiesby the three-time UAAP cham-pion Ateneo Blue Eagles andtheir rookie one-two punchKiefer Ravena and GregSlaughter.

Filling the void left by BorgieHermida won’t be an easy taskfor Amer, but multititled mentorFrankie Lim is confident that hisprized rookie will do just fine.

Lim, though, hopes Amerwill be a wee bit vocal whenrunning the Red Lions this sea-son.

Meanwhile, Taha, a six-foot-seven behemoth, beefs up thefrontline of Mapua, which looksto improve on its fourth placefinish last season.

Taha has shown he can bangbodies in the paint at both endsof the floor as well as hit thatshort open jumpers during sev-eral preseason outings.

R EMEMBER your first day in school? The jitters? The excitement? Multiply that first day highten-fold and then throw in marching bands,

cheering fans and heckling students from a rivalschool and you’ll get a glimpse of how it’s like tobe a rookie in the wild and reckless NCAA men’sbasketball tournament.

There’s going to be a lot ofwide-eyed freshmen on the ros-ters of the NCAA squads, buthow many of them will actuallyget to shed off their warmersand check in at the scorer’stable?

For starters, there’s celebrat-ed high school star Baser Amerand Fil-Palestinian big manYousef Taha, who’ll probably bethe top newbie performerswhen the 87th NCAA Seasonkicks off on July 2.

Amer, a two-time Finals MVPwith the San Beda Red Cubs, will now showcase his all-around game as the new start-ing point guard for the reigningNCAA champs.

Amer, who flirted withtriple-doubles more than hedid with girls in high school, had a quiet but efficient pre-season stint as he quarter-backed the Red Lions to the fi-nals of the Filoil Flying Vtournament only to be bested

"I’m verry happy with Taha,”said Mapua coach Chito Vic-tolero, whose squad managedto make the quarterfinals of therecent Filoil preseason tourney.

And while all eyes will be onAmer and Tahan, there’ll be afew rookies who might end upstealing the show.

Look out for San Sebastian’sBobby Balucanag, too.

Balucanag is no Gino Jumao-as, who was supposed to be theStags blue-chip rookie until anunexpected turmoil had himtaking his talents elsewhere.

Look out for these guyswhen you troop to an NCAAvenue. And whether you’re forthem or against them, givethem a warm NCAA welcome.

You do remember how it wasto be a wide-eyed freshman, right?

WATCH outfor SBCrookie BaserAmer.
