All-star showReview by Vives Anunciacion

X-Men: Days Of Future PastDirected by Bryan SingerPG

I T’S all-star X-Men ver-sus humans and theall-powerful Sentinels

in the sprawling and in-tense X-Men: Days of Fu-ture Past.

Bryan Singer, director of thefirst two X-Men movies, bringstogether the cast and charactersof X-Men, X2, X-Men: The LastStand, and X-Men: First Class ina rare summer superhero moviethat’s both explosively action-packed and a few times quietlythought-provoking.

In Days of Future Past, the X-Men in the future led by CharlesXavier (PatrickStewart) andMagneto (Ian McK-ellen) send Wolverine(Hugh Jackman) into the pastin a desperate mission to con-vince the young Charles (JamesMcAvoy), Erik Lehnsherr/Mag-neto (Michael Fassbender) andRaven/Mystique (JenniferLawrence) to work together andchange history in order to pre-vent the coming of the Sentinelsthat would decimate humansand wipe out mutants. Game ofThrones star Peter Dinklageplays Dr. Trask, inventor of theSentinel robots.

I enjoyed this largely as a fanof the X-Men movies, though theSentinel storyline is familiar ter-ritory to hard-core fans of the

comic books—which I am not. There are many instances tocheer for your favorite mutant, just as there are scenes whereone is made to think of thewhat-ifs if history did happendifferently.

Credit the filmmak-ers—particularly thescreenwriter—for deft-ly weaving a story

that works as a sequel to FirstClass, a deeper reverberation ofthe moral tug-of-war betweenCharles and Erik in X1, a pre-quel to the political subplot andinternal emotional drama in X2,brief references to X-Men Ori-gins: Wolverine, and an en-trenchment of the war betweenmutants and humans in X3(even if X3 is the weakest in theseries.) Credit the editor forkeeping the convoluted time-travelling story clear enough. And thanks to the (largelyBritish) actors for making thiscomic book movie emotionallyhonest. We sort of get an idea

about what Charles is under-going especially in that

scene when theyounger Charles

faces the olderCharles.

There

are a few new mutants to adoreas well, particularly the show-stopping Quicksilver (Evan Pe-ters.) Or maybe I should sayslow-motioning. And because it’sa Marvel movie, there’s a stingerin the end credits about the nextX-Men movie.

It’s like Bryan Singer tied upthe entire series, kicked them upa notch then threw everythingout the window. At the end ofDays Of Future Past, it’s nowpossible to hope for ANY story-line the studio can think of re-gardless of continuity with the

TryoutLOOKS like walamasyadongnakakaalam na nag-papatryout si MannyPacquiao for the Kiateam sa isang gym saParañnaque.

According to a col-league, dito sa gymna ito naglalaro ngbasketball regularlyang Pambansang Ka-mao to keep himselfin shape and paramaglibang. Susunodkasi sa boxing, bas-ketball ang favorite

sport.Last Friday

nga, tatlonggames daw angnilaro ni Pac-man, report ngating colleaguena nagpunta sagym personallyto see what’s goingon.

Tingin daw niyanag-eensayo na siManny para sa napip-intong debut niya saPBA next season.

That is, kung pa-

payagan siya ngkanyang promoter nasi Bob Arum of TopRank na maglaro saPBA at the risk nama-injure siya.

Remember, Arumhas scheduled a fightfor Manny this com-

ing November, di panga lang masigurokung sino angmakakalaban.

Kamakailanlamang ay pumirmang two-year kontratasa Top Rank si Manny, which is good up to2016.

Expected namagkakaroon ngdalawang bouts nextyear and People’sChamp, and anothertwo in 2016. All told,Manny is good for at

least a total of 5 morefights
