Mister vdB decided to become a part of  the Vlammie family because he saw a  lot  of  potential  here and  liked everything about our  school. Upon arriving at Bergvlam he  immediately  jumped  in and started coaching our U/15 rugby team but he would like to get involved in all areas of Vlammie-land, including our culture.

He is married, has two daughters and enjoys fly-fishing in his spare time.  He also loves animals and enjoys spending time in the game reserve.  If given  the  choice,  he would  not mind  being  a  leopard.   And  if  he  got  to choose a superpower he would  take super vision so  that he could  read people’s minds.

Good music … check Great braaivleis…checkAnd a jaw dropping amount of “gees”…CHECK & CHECK!!!

From  the  “flash  mob”  dancing  and  the  “braai” meat  burning  to  the  ear-splitting  screaming and  the  colourful  lighting,  every  part  of  our “geesvang”  social  was  memorable.  Even  with the slight humps and bumps here and there, the night continued to be a fun-filled one.

Even  the  ‘karaoke’  part  of  the  night  proved entertaining.  Who  would  have  thought  we’ve been pronouncing and singing our songs wrong for so long. Huh!?

Another  “wow!”  moment  was  the  vlammie tradition, which we  all  witnessed  the  beginning of.   When  the  two  lanterns  (# whoops! Error!  I meant  single  lantern)  floated  into  the  night  sky and  we  all  proudly  sang  our  school  anthem,  it was absolutely breathtaking. Definitely a  “wow” moment.

With a selfie here, a group photo  there and an “ag my hare!” moment everywhere when the rain came, every moment of  the evening was worth documenting. Even  if  that meant updating your Facebook status every 5 minutes, or uploading enough  pictures  to  fill  an  album  on  instagram. Every moment was definitely worth sharing.

And although  the  rain  tried  to dampen our  fun, it couldn’t successfully extinguish the flame that burns so brightly inside our souls.Always burn with pride…

IF YOU WANNA BE A VLAMMIE

How to spirit for dummiesBy Vanessa Modise

After our super spirit team WOW-ed the lowveld again this year, people started wondering how we do it – again and again.  “Ah, it’s nothing,” we say.  “We just follow an easy family recipe.”

RECIPE FOR: The Super Bergvlam Spirit Team.

Ingredients:•  Amazing Cheerleaders•  A one of a kind choreographer (Maryke)•  Cool tunes•  A  spirit  team  (±450 members)  (Must  include  a  few Gr.  8

newbie-Vlammies)•  A high-end DJ (Mr Wells)•  Dedicated teachers (±5)•  An awesome principal•  A few bibs•  A foamy massa bank •  Sunscreen, water and snacks

Begin by mixing the cheerleaders and the choreographer with a few cool tunes until things start to move.  Now stir up the DJ, add the spirit team and beat for as long as possible (if you spot any sour spirit team members remove immediately).

Sprinkle  in some  teachers and  fold  in one awesome principal.  Chuck the mixture into a square mould and cover in bibs.  Bake, without the shade cloth, at full lowveld heat until it starts to crack and a ballerina emerges.  Remove for a day and fill the cracks with a foamy massa bank and dust with fancy dress outfits.  Put back in the sun, but now covered in shade cloth.

When you notice the blinding awesomeness radiating from the spirit team you know – it is ready.  Serve with sunscreen, water and snack.   Voila! One Super Bergvlam Spirit Team ready to impress!

Spirit Team Blues

By Jessé Thorpe

After months  of  practice  in  all weather  conditions  and moods,  inter-high finally arrives.    It  is always, without a doubt, a memorable day. But what happens after our songs are sung and scores are counted? After the stands are cleared and the crowd has gone home? We are left, disillusioned, in the inter-high aftermath.

1.  Extreme exhaustion  –  With  just  a  Sunday  to  “recover”  (cough) and to (cough) do homework, one cannot help but (cough) behave zombie-like for at least a week.

2.  No voices – This is the evidence that you had spirit and gave it your all, and no amount of Strepsils can cure this.  For some reason the teachers don’t seem to mind...

3.  A vaguely-awkward-turn in your relationships with friends from other schools  –  After  singing  U.G.L.Y  and  many  more  insulting songs, the first encounter after inter-high – is always awkward.

4.  Long periods  –  Lastly,  is  realising  how  l-o-o-ong  normal  periods actually are... Now there is no bell interrupting the teacher as (s)he is about to give you homework.

What will you miss most about the inter-high?

Being part of the “opkoms” was awesome, all the practising and spirit-raising paid off even if we didn’t win. – Mikayla Wilmans

The adrenaline rushing through me when I run my relay. – Ndumiso Thwala

Watching other schools doing their opkoms and thinking: Good, not great…We were awesome! – Timothy Baloyi

The competitive vibe and pride I felt made it really unique and special. – Tarryn Semmens

Sitting there with my friends and school screaming our hearts out for our athletes

– Ntabiseng Zulu

Handing out drinks to the exhausted athletes, helping out, having fun and making friends while being a helper. – Jenna Skinner

I enjoyed walking around the field with the music playing and people watching the athletics. This made me realise how much effort went into the whole day and that made me really proud to be a Vlammie. It ignited a tiny spark within me. Vlammies really do burn with pride. – Jacqueline Keck

If you ever had  to  run  for your  life and you reached a canyon with a 7.33m divide  - with no bridge...  I guess  it would be nice  to know  that you are capable of making  that  long  jump  to freedom.

Maudas Banda is not just a Bergvlam superstar; his record-breaking jump of 7.33m at the South African Championships earlier this year has also turned him into an up and coming sports icon.  Maudas agreed to an interview with the Onderonsie so that you can get to know the guy before and after the jumps.

Before and after the jumps, we have found Maudas to be a witty guy who loves his mom and has a great deal of determination.  We might just someday lay him to rest in a sandpit.  But in the meanwhile, we wish him good luck at the African games and all his jumping endeavours.

An interview with

Vlammieland’s very own Maudas Banda

Exclusive:

Noni:Tell us,when did your long jump

career start?

Noni:I thought that you had been jumping

all your life.

Noni:Okay. How do your

parents feel about you jumping - do they fully

support you?

Noni:Ncaww! Too sweet!

So you and your mom are really

close, huh?

Noni:Ahwe! So I guess your mom is your

motivation?

Noni:Words to live by! But on a different note, do you have any pre-jump ritu-

als, say for instance - kiss the sand?

Noni:So what do you

do before a jump?

Noni:So what does Maudas

say to Maudas? Do you have a specific mantra

that you chant?

Noni:No, it’s not weird, just different. Speaking of

different, if you could do something other than ath-letics, what would it be?

Noni:Okay. So besides jump-ing and practising and running, what else do

you like to do with your time?

Noni:Wow! Your sched-ule sounds busy! What do you do to take the stress off?

Noni:So Maudas, how did

you jump 7.33m? That is impossibly far.

Noni:You don’t seem to have much time to

play at all!

Noni:What is your

advice to aspiring jumpers?

Maudas:2011. I was in

grade 7.

Maudas:I’ve been doing athletics since

forever, but I only started jumping

later.

Maudas:Yeah, she does.

My mommy always makes sure I get everything I need and stuff. I cherish

that lady.

Maudas:Yeah, we are. I don’t know where I’d be without her.

Maudas:Well not really, my

mom is my supporter. I’m my own motivation. I keep myself going.

#GottaBelieveInYourself!

Maudas:Haha! Kiss the

sand…well no, I don’t have one but rituals develop naturally, so

we’ll see.

Maudas:Well, I do talk to

myself.

Maudas:You’re going to thinkthis is weird but… I tell

myself to: get in my zone; forget about life; remember

everything I’ve practised; unleash

the beast...

Maudas:Focus on school, varsity, makemoney and just

live.

Maudas:Go out with the

homies. But lately I haven’t hadmuch time for

that.

Maudas:I sleeeeeeeeeeep!

Maudas:WORK HARD. PLAY HARD

Maudas:The playing

happens at the sand pit.

Maudas:Try to beat me.

Hahaha! Just kidding! But seriously though, keep working hard and

always believein yourself.

Dagboek van ’n muscaDeur Imke Smit

Dag 1Shhh!

Ek sal my ma wys! Ek het haar gesê ek sal nog eendag die wêreld red, en dis nou my kans!

Dag … Dalk die laaste dagHierdie is dalk my laaste dag as ’n MENS! As ek ’n Vlam-mie word, sal ek moet aanpas. If u can’t biet them, join them. Ek sal moet brand met trots!

A Vlammie Fairytale:

The Exotic Ball of LoveBy Nicolene Jonker

Once upon a time, not too long ago, on Thursday 13 February, Vlambelina went to Vlammie-land’s Valentine’s Ball. It was an exhilarating Masquerade Ball.

The Ladies were all dressed in striking dresses; the gentlemen looked very handsome in tuxes. The guests filled the stunningly decorated hall with amiable laughter, love and enjoyable music, thanks to the astounding DJ Willem Botha!

Vlambelina’s chariot (well her dad’s blue bakkie) arrived and Prince Vlameon – bedazzled with red, pink, and purple strikkies – greeted her with a delicious cupcake that he had bought that morning from a persistent Gr. 11. He then escorted Vlambelina down the red carpet. Vlambelina felt like a princess, as the cameras flashed.

With every passing dance, the various couples’ romances blossomed, making everyone vivacious and jubilant, including the thrilled Vlambelina. She knew, as she stared into her adoring prince’s eyes, that she would never, ever forget this unforget-table night.

However, when the clock struck 10, Vlambelina’s cellphone rang and she dashed for her “chariot”, leaving behind her lovely ATKV badge – oe lala! Sy vry in Afrikaans! – for her Prince Vlameon to find; knowing that he would, by returning it to her, prove his love.

With a sparkle in her eye, warmth in her heart and a smile on her beautiful face, Vlambelina was driven into the night. She was already enthusiastic and eager about next year’s ball; knowing that next year’s Gr. 11 students will make the evening ex-otic and unforgettable once more. That night Vlambelina’s slumber was full of joyful music. In her dreams her Prince Vlameon swept her across the dance floor and she felt intensely proud to be called a Vlammie… because Vlammie hearts burn with pride!

Mrs.  Oosthuyzen’s  incredibly  hot,  slow  and  antique  “1983”  themed classroom went through an exciting technological makeover.  The stirred wind  from  those  old white  ceiling  fans was  replaced with  the  refreshing breeze of an air-conditioned classroom.  In addition to the AC, the previous rugged  computers  –  shaped  like  boulders  and  probably  weighing more than the average human –  were exchanged for brand, sparkling new and improved slim PC’s which are way faster, fantastic-er and future-er!

There is a time to come, and a time to go, and the time for the old computers to go, has come. In an interview with mrs Oosthuyzen she explained that the old computers were not suited to run Windows 7. They did not have a lot of RAM and were extremely slow.  “The CRT screens were bulky and honestly, a bit ugly.”

The new computers have 4GB RAM – 8x more than the old ones and are much faster.  “Sorry CAT learners: there will no longer be time for a quick chat while you wait for your computer to log on!” These new computers also have LED screens, which mean  that  they  last  for decades and use  less energy.  The CAT learners have gone green indeed!  To top it all off, they are much nicer to look at.

An air-conditioner was also installed in the lab.  A computer generates heat and because there are 28 computers in a smaller classroom like M6, it can get really hot.

When  asked  whether  she  will  miss  the  old  computers mrs Oosthuyzen jokingly said, “Now we can’t blame the old computers for not doing class work anymore.”

M6 looks really professional now. If at any time you would like to step into the “Future”, don’t forget to pass by there!

“19 – way back” Computer class gets a makeover!

Problem AHi, I’m in grade 8 and all my old friends went to different schools.  How do I choose new friends who will suit and be good for me?

Advice: Choosing new friends  is one of  the most  important decisions one has to make and one thus needs to choose carefully. Getting mixed up with the wrong crowd is not good. With unsuitable friends you might end up doing things out of character.  Friends have the power to influence almost every choice that you make, from what you choose to wear to what you choose to eat. You therefore need to choose friends that will help you reach your full potential.  But it is important to remember though that making good friends does not happen overnight.   Also, the chances are that the friends you start grade 8 with will not be the friends you dance with at your matric farewell.  You will change a lot over the next five years and so will the peeps around you.  Allow yourself the space to get to know many of your fellow learners – participate in various school activities and don’t judge people by their ap-pearances.  Amongst your fellow Vlammies there will be a gem who suits you and who you suit.  Remember, it’s not about having many friends; you can settle with having 2 friends, as long as they are true friends.

Problems need solvingProblem BHi, I’m in grade 12 - grade 12 isn’t a walk in the park. The constant studying is enough to drive any person crazy, but I enjoy it - I’m a bit of a nerd. So lately my friends have been pushing me to do things out of character for me.  They make me feel guilty by saying things like, “YOLO, you only live once! Get a life.” Am I silly for working so hard?  Maybe I should loosen up more.

Advice: Don’t let other people make you doubt yourself.  Everyone is different.  You will know in your heart what the best thing is for you.  Being responsible is maybe not the most popular characteristic when you are a teenager but it is an amiable trait in the world outside of school.  High-schoolers have this philosophy that high school is the pinnacle of life.  Well I have great news for you: It is certainly not.  If you aim at living life to the full you will find that each new phase surpasses the one before.  While there is still a great deal to look forward to in life one should note the importance of now.   Yes, one should enjoy high school, but don’t let your choices (all in the name of having fun) limit your future.   High school is a preparation phase - especially grade 12.  Don’t allow unfocused carefree friends to drag you down a road you would not have chosen for yourself.  Yes, you only live once.  So stop living someone else’s life.  Being true to yourself is the most living you’ll ever do.

Bergvlam  is  embracing  a  new  tradition:  The  ringing  of  The  Bell!  The bellhouse was put up so subtly that we nearly did not take note of it until the day we marched through it in our hordes: dong…dong…dong-dong…dong…  (miss)…dong…  and  before  we  knew  it  we  had  started  a  new tradition.

According to mister Krüger The Bell signifies the unbroken circle of the true Vlammie –  it announces:  the beginning and end of a phase; exceptional achievements; and unity.   The school’s first  introduction  to The Bell was quite overwhelming but as mister Krüger says, we will soon get  into  the rhythm of it.

In the future The Bell will ring:•  To welcome everyone back at the start of a new year. •  By each Gr. 8 when they become part of Bergvlam.•  By new teachers and learners throughout the year to announce their

arrival.   •  To announce the departure of a teacher or learner.

What’s up with da Bell?•  To commemorate a learner or educator who had passed away.  •  By  the Gr. 12s when  they  leave Bergvlam at  the end of  their matric

year.•  By a learner when he/she is awarded a prestige leadership position.  •  To announce the end of an academic year.

The Bell is basically a symbol and a reminder that you are acknowledged and accepted as a member of this Vlammie-family.

Now you might ask what the result would be should a learner ring The Bell out of place: well, you might just find yourself in a sticky situation.  See, Mr Krüger has always wanted to “tar and feather” someone.  It is an interesting historical punishment, but in our age it means that you will be tied to the bellhouse after which a tub of syrup will be dunked over your head.  Then a feather pillow will lose its contents over you, leaving you infamously known as “Chickenzilla”.

If we run our out of syrup or feathers you might end up polishing The Bell till it shimmers like gold...  Yeah, don’t mis-ring da Bell!
