DESCRIPTION

Preface

It is a very difficult thing indeed to do to explain theBuddha-Dhamma with meaning.

A parrot can be taught to memorize and recite any partof the Dhamma but would not understand the meaning ofwhat it was speaking.

The following translation of Luang Por Boonyarithûsoriginal Thai script is the combined effort of several Thaidisciples who are fluent in both Thai and English and haveexperience with the Dhamma. The work was written whileLuang Por retreated in Hua Hin for a month, as the guestof Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. It is a small piece of workyet full of the experience and wisdom that Luang Porpossesses as a noble disciple of Lord Buddha.

During the years that Luang Por was in Australia, therewere many occasions when he would discuss and explainthe Dhamma and his experiences and he would remarkthat the times when he would discover the hidden

meaning of some word or phrase was like he put chocolatein his mouth.

It is hoped that all who read this work will enjoy thetaste of chocolate and feel refreshed. The Palace in Hua Hinwhere Luang Por stayed is called çWang Glai Gung Wunéor çPalace Far From Worriesé, loosely translated asçNo Worries !é This expression accurately describes thegoal of following the Buddhaûs Path to Liberation, therealization of the cessation of Ignorance, the ending ofDukkha or Unsatisfactoriness - the definite end of allconcern, worry, attachment and ignorance which hedescribed as Nirvana.

Luang Por always listened to his disciples as they soughtmeaning in their practice and more often than not he wouldlimit his explanations to short utterances or instructionsfocusing on the çdoingé rather than the çthinkingé. Thinkingis important, to be sure, but the trap is to get stuck in thisprocess that each one creates by his own thought/s andthe only way out of this mess is to develop oneûs mindfulness(Sati-in Pali language).

Quotes from Luang Por :-

çWhen the time comesEverything comesé

çSatié - çNipanéçNipané - çSatié

His encouragement has always been to practice, literally to çdo the worké that needs to be done. This meansbeing mindful of thoughts and thought-processes,as they occur, rather than thinking about being mindful.

And time ceases to be irrelevant as we journey on theMiddle Path, for just as our arrival depends on ourjourneying, the journey itself becomes the goal.

çYou do what you want ....I do what I like !é

1. Observe the breath going in and out through the neckdown the chest into the abdomen. No need to think ofanything, just see and know the breath as it is ; seeing,seeing-only,Knowing knowing-only, or seeing seeingseeing, knowing knowing knowing, seeing in theseeing, knowing in the knowing. Do this continuouslyfor days, months or years without giving up. This isPerseverance - diligence, called Viriya (Pali) or RightEffort (Factor of the Eight-fold Middle Path). Come tothe end of suffering due to Perseverance, the earnesteffort in Sati- Bhavana or Mindfulness - Insight inMeditation.

2. If practice in this way for a long period does notproduce any apparent progress - result, one can usethe following method:-

In the seeing just seeing or seeing only - awarenesswith the six sense consciousness as they arise and passaway in the present moment - present momenthappenings, knowing without attachment to theknowing, no holding on to, no grasping at theknowing, knowing without clinging. Use thisawareness with the Parikamma (Mental object ofconcentration e.g. çBuddhoé), to keep the mind on trackwith the present flow of happenings, until oneûs pastmerits and perfections (accomplishments in spiritualway) - Parami (in Pali) - ripen into their result shiftingoneûs awareness towards Citta - Sati - awareness ofthe Citta (Mind) with Maha - Sati, Super - Mindful-ness, awareness of the Heart itself according to thattruth.

Sound from Hua Hin

Page 18: เสียงจากหัวหิน (หลวงปู่บุญฤทธิ์ ปัณฑิโต)

16

One starts to note Citta - Sati, Citta - Sati naturally.Citta - Sati, the awareness of the Heart itself issomething beyond this world, Lokuttara - it is theBuddha Heart,Dhamma - Essence, Ariya - Sangha(Noble Sangha) - it is the Citta (Heart) realizing itself- Nibbana, Pure Mind Heart unconditioned by anysankharas (Worldly Happenings).

Nibbanam Paramam Sukham,Nirvana is the UltimateSupreme Happiness

Furthermore, Citta - Sati - the Heart completely awarein itself; çCitta - Dhatué -Pure mind nature or HeartEssence; çCitta - Visankharaé - the Heart withoutmental formations arising and passing away (thoughts, ideas, discriminations, any kind of mental Constructionor fabrications), when there is nothing that forms toarise and pass away.

17

This Lord Buddha called Nibbana - the Citta withoutthe arising of formations leads to the Dhamma of Void(Heart Full in Itself), the Nibbana, the End of Delusion(Avijja Paccaya Sankhara - Ignorance the condition forthe arising of the World of Sankharas (happenings, mental activity), the Cessation of the World (Loka -Sankhara), leaving only Emptiness (Visankhara - NoFormations) or Nibbana, Anuttara - Dhamma (ImmortalDhamma - the One and Only).

3. Yet another approach to the meditation practice is todevelop oneûs mindfulness continuously until arriving atthe first Vipassana (Insight) Knowledge - Anupassana, the analysis of the impression of a self or a core - substanceinside the Five Khandhas (Groups or Aggregates), theForm, the Feeling, Sense of Existence (Perception ofbeing), Mental Formations (activity of all kinds), andConsciousness (Sense - Awareness) -all of which togetherwe call a being, an ù Iû a ùYouû, a ùSelfû, a ùHeû, a ùSheû, butwhich Lord Buddha declared to be Anatta (Not Self, NotMe, Not Mine).

Look at this using the method of Paticca Samuppada(Dependent Origination - When there is this, there isthat , with the arising of this, that arises; no thing exists, independently of anything else).

See how Avijja Paccaya Sankhara, how dependent on notknowing there arise mental formations. Not knowing isAvijja, the dark element. It cause the spinning or outwardflow of the mind; all come up to lie (deceive) to us,whether it is sense-consciousness (vinnana), mind andform (Nama-Rupa), the Five Groups of a sentient livingbeing, whether it is the taint of greed or hatred orlust - desire, whether it is the delusion about the planesof existence (all mind-made) ; eventually you canunderstand how all unenlightened beings are in error.

Sound from Hua Hin

Page 22: เสียงจากหัวหิน (หลวงปู่บุญฤทธิ์ ปัณฑิโต)

20

When one sees like this, the attachment to the Five Groups(Khandhas), the impression of Being and the possessionof body and mind as a Self - that error of life disappearsand the second vipassana-nana is discovered, that is theSacca-Dhamma, the Truth, the Amata (Immortal) Dhamma, the Deathless, the no born no death dhamma appears. That is the ultimate one with no second realizing to it.That is enough.

Sati - Nibbanam Paramam Sukham - Awareness ofNibbana is the ultimate happiness.

Eko Dhammo - the one and only thing in the present, theliberation in this physical body and beyond all worry, beyond the craving and holding to any Dhamma at all.

Naso Hetu Vam Vivatho Lokuttara Santam - free fromconventional language - End of perceptional world offorms. The calming in the Supra - Mundane is çEko -Dhammoé- The One and Only Dhamma.
