    Position SummaryThis is an exciting opportunity for an immunologist/molecular biologist to work at the interface oftropical infectious diseases and basic research. The Research Officer is responsible toProfessor Cameron Simmons for conducting research on an NHMRC-funded project directed tounderstanding the immune response to dengue virus infection. The work will specificallyexamine the role of NK cells and allelic variation in the human MICB gene in the early hostimmune response to dengue virus infection in Vietnamese children and adults. A range oftechniques will be employed to investigate this aspect of the host-pathogen interaction andtherefore the position would suit someone with a diverse technical experience. The project willbe linked to ongoing and detailed prospective clinical and virological studies of dengue patientsin Viet Nam.

    The Research Officer will be appointed to the Nossal Institute for Global Health and based atthe laboratories of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine,Dentistry and Health Sciences.

    Completion of a PhD in the Biomedical Sciences field or Medical degree and/or relevantresearch experience

    Expertise in multi colour flow cytometry

    Expertise in molecular biology

    Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and collaborativelyStrong organisational and communication skills

    Experience in handling infectious agents

    Experience in handling infectious clinical specimens

    Demonstrated ability to develop new experimental protocols

    Experience in supervision of graduate students and research assistants

    3. Key Responsibilities

    3 .1 RESEARCH ADVANCEMENT OF THE DISCIPLINE

    Independently plan and carry out experiments assessing NK cell activity in vitro and exvivo and analyse these findings in the context of host genotype and virological parameters

    Maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments conducted

    Develop effective timelines and milestones based on goals of the research programme

    Be responsible for qualitative and statistical analysis of research data and tocommunicate this information to the Chief Investigators and collaborators

    Present experimental results at local, national and international forums

    Write up experimental results for publication in peer-reviewed journals

    Assist other researchers in carrying out experiments in order to work as a team andfurther the d epartments research output

    Perform other duties as requested by the appointees immediate supervisors consistentwith responsibilities of an NHMRC funded position

    Prepare and submit ethics applications

    Attend and contribute to lab meetings

    3 .2 CONTRIBUTION TO TEACHING AND LEARNING

    Contribute to teaching, training, scientific mentoring and supervision of students

    Make presentations to team members and/or community and industry groups on currentprojects

    The Nossal Institute for Global Health is a department of the Faculty of Medicine,Dentistry & Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
