2 Function and application
A rotating slide spindle converts the rotary movement of a motor into a linear movement. The inner slide then moves backwards and forwards. The slide 6 isdriven by an axially rigid connection through a slot in the profile. A cover strip 3covers the slot in the profile.
The slide is bearing mounted. The reference position of the slide can be detectedusing proximity switched in the grooves aC.
The EGC−...−BS−KF−... spindle axis is intended to be used to precisely position usefulloads. It is approved for slide operatingmode.
NoteThe EGC−...−BS−KF−... spindle axis is not fitted with a brake: When input torque isnot applied, the slide can be moved freely. Generally automatic locking of the entire system can be achieved using motorswith integrated spring−loaded holding brake or with high self−braking torque(e.g.for vertical operation).
S Please select the appropriate motors from our catalogue www.festo.com/catalogue
You will then be operating two devices which are especially matched to eachother.
When using other motors:
S Adhere to the maximum permitted values for forces, torque and speeds in accordance with the èchapters12Technical data" and 13Characteristiccurves."
3 Transportation and storage
S Take into account the weight of the product. Depending on the version, the EGC can weigh up to 180 kg.
S Provide the following storage conditions:
Storage times should be kept to a minimum Cool, dry, shaded, corrosion resistant storage locations.

S Do not modify the settings of screws andthreaded pins if there is no request to dothis in these operating instructions.
S Fit the motor onto the axis in accordancewith the assembly instructions for themotor mounting kit recommended in thecatalogue.
Installing the product:
NoteHeavy tensile loads may cause the screws in the cover to be pulled out.
S Please note that in the case of heavy loadings the axis must not befastened only by the bearing cap.
S Make sure that the device is fitted free ofmechanical stress and distortion. (evenness of bearing surface: 0.05% of the stroke length; max. 0.5mm).
S Position the EGC so that all the operatingparts are accessible.
S Adhere to the required support spacings.
The diagrams in chapter 13 Characteristic curves" show the support spacingwhich depends on the mounting position and useful load.
If the specified minimum spacings are exceeded, it is imperative to carry out anindividual functional test.
NoteUnsuitable mounting techniques can reduce the service life of the EGC considerably.
S Make sure that the mounting components are outside the positioning rangeof the slide.

Fitting in a vertical or sloping position
WarningMasses falling suddenly can cause personalinjury and material damage (crushing). Ifthere is a power failure or if the spindle nutbreaks, the work load will fall.
S Make sure that you only use motors withan integrated spring−loaded holding brake.
S Check whether external safety measuresare necessary to prevent spindle nut fracture (e.g.toothed latches, moving bolts oran emergency buffer).
Installing the useful load
S Place the useful load so that the break−down torque of force F (parallel to theaxis of motion) and lever arm a" remainslow.
S Fasten the useful load to the slide withscrews and centring sleeves.
S Make sure that the maximum screw−indepth D is adhered to.

Useful loads with their own guide:
S Adjust the guides of the useful load and of the EGC so that they are exactlyparallel. You will then avoid overloading the guide (wear).
With hard and stiff useful loads (e.g. steel):
NoteIf the aluminium slide becomes bent againsta buckled useful load, the service life of theguide will be reduced.
S Make sure that the mounting surface ofthe useful loads is even to withint0.01mm.
With mass geometries with projection in thelongitudinal direction of the slide:
S Make sure that the useful load does notstrike against the motor.
Installing the external accessories
Protecting the end positions against uncontrolled overrunning:
S Check whether proximity switches are necessary (hardware limit switches).
If proximity sensors are used as proximity switches:
S Preferably use proximity switches with normally−closed function.
These will protect a EGC with a fractured proximity switch cable against overrunning the end position.
If proximity sensors are used as reference switches:
S Use the proximity switches in accordance with the input of the controller beingused.

Fig.15: Definitions
1. Start check travel with low dynamics.
In spite of equal control, even motors of the same type sometimes turn in the opposite direction due to the circuitry. The EGC has a spindle which turns clockwise: When the drive trunnion is turned in clockwise, the slide moves in the direction of the motor.
2. Start homing run in accordance with the operating instructions for your motordrive system with low dynamics up to the reference switch.
The homing run must only be performed against the reference switch.
3. Start test run with low dynamics.
4. Check whether the EGC fulfils the following conditions:
The slide must be able to move through the complete intended positioningcycle.
The slide must stop as soon as it reaches a limit switch.

7 Operation
WarningMoving masses can cause personal injury and material damage.
S Make sure that: nobody can place his/her hand in the path of the moving parts (e.g.by means of a protective screen),
there are no objects in the positioning range. It should not be possible to touch the EGC until the mass has come to a complete stand.
Fitting in a vertical or sloping position
WarningFalling masses can cause personal injury and material damage. If there is a power failure or if the spindle nut breaks, the useful load will fall.
S If the permitted axial play is exceeded (èChapter8Care andmaintenance") send the EGC back to Festo to be repaired.
If the motor turns in the wrong direction:
NoteWhen the motor is removed (e.g. turning the motor) the reference position is lost.
S Start a homing run as detailed in thechapter 6 Commissioning" in order to set the new reference position.

8 Care and maintenance
WarningMoving masses can cause personal injury and material damage.
If a worn spindle nut breaks on a vertically or diagonally fitted EGC, the useful mass will fall.
S In case of signs of wear, return the EGC to Festo for repairs.
Controller signals can cause the EGC to make unintentional movements.
S Switch off the controller for all maintenance work on the EGC and secureit from to prevent it from being switched back on unintentionally.
During each servicing process:
S Check the axial play of the slide for wear of the spindle nut. The wear on theball screw will lead to increased noise in the long−term and eventually causethe ball screw to block or the spindle nut to break. Maximum axial play permitted is:
