I. Reading Comprehension Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.

Japanese are becoming unhappier at work, the government said in a report yesterday, highlighting complaints over pay, lack of vacations and a decline in morale.

Long known for being workaholics willing to sacrifice their personal lives for the company, Japanese workers, especially younger ones, are now placing more priority on time with their families and financial rewards. The percentage of workers satisfied with the pace of their pay increases fell to 6.2 percent in 2005 from 15.7 percent in 1990, the government's labor white paper said. "Workers seem to want more personal time and increasingly want to fulfill their emotional needs rather than materialistic needs," a health ministry official said.

The findings are a reminder of the challenges companies face now in hiring new talents as Japan's population ages and its work force shrinks, some economists said.

"It used to be that companies could lure new talent with high salaries," said Saori Tsuiki, an economist at Mitsubishi Research Institute. "But workers now want something more, and this has been a big headache for corporate strategies," she said.

"Young workers have in recent years favored carefree lifestyles, hopping from one part-time job to another, or quitting full-time jobs after just a few years," Tsuiki said. Analysts have said the trend will do harm to Japan's labor market in the long term because it would lead to a shortage of skilled workers.

Older workers were switching jobs because they failed to get along with colleagues or were unhappy with how they were being evaluated at companies using performance-based management, the white paper said.

Under Japan's traditional lifetime employment system, employees were guaranteed promotions and pay increases as they grew older, regardless of performance.

"For an effective performance-based system, efforts are needed to improve the implementation of the wage system, such as making clear the basis for evaluation and providing detailed explanations for the assessments," the white paper said. 1. Why do Japanese workers become unhappy at work? A. They are underpaid. B. They have to do much more work than they used to. C. Most of them are unemployed. D. They are not satisfied with their employers. 2. What are the new challenges that Japanese companies face when hiring talents? A. High salaries. B. Aging population.

C. A large work force. D. Poor-educated employees. 3. What is the trend that the young workers follow in recent years? A. They stick to the same job all their life. B. They change jobs frequently. C. They only take part-time jobs. D. They take both part-time job and full-time job. 4. The older workers change their jobs because____________. A. they are tired of their current profession B. they are not promoted C. they are underpaid D. they can’t get along with their colleagues 5. Under the performance-based management, which of the flowing statements is not true?

A. The implementation of the wage system should be improved. B. The basis for evaluation should be made clear. C. Employees are guaranteed promotions and pay increases regardless of performance. D. Detailed explanations for the assessments should be provided.

Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.

Nutritional (营养的) status affects children’s behavior. Well-nourished children are more alert and attentive and are better able to benefit from physical and learning experience. Poorly nourished children may be quiet and withdrawn, or too active during class activities. Fat children also face many problems. They are often slow and less able to participate in physical activity. They may suffer from being laughed at and emotional stress by being excluded from playmates.

Children’s resistance to infection and illness is also definitely influenced by their nutritional status. Children who are well nourished are less likely to become ill; they also recover more quickly when they are sick. Poorly nourished children are more sensitive to infections and illness. Illness also increases the need for some nutrients (营养物质). Thus poor nutrition creates a cycle of illness, poorer nutritional status, and lowered resistance to illness.

Malnutrition is a serious problem for many young children but it is not always associated with poverty or a poor environment. Children of middle and upper income families may also be malnourished because of unwise food selections. Malnutrition occurs when there is prolonged (拖延的) imbalance of the nutrients that are required and the nutrients that are actually eaten. Malnutrition may be the result of under-nutrition or over-nutrition.

It is important that both of these conditions be avoided in young child. An adequate intake of all required nutrients is most vital during early periods of growth and development. Also, the effects of nutritional deficiency on physical development during early childhood are less likely to be changed by improved dietary intake later. 6. Well-nourished children tend to do all the following but _________.

A. be attentive while learning B. be too active in classC. benefit from physical activity D. behave very properly

7. Which of the following statement is NOT true?A. Children’s resistance to illness is directly proportional to their poor nutritional status. B. The well-nourished tend to recover quickly when they are ill. C. The poorly-nourished are most likely to be the victims of any infections disease. D. The ‘cycle’ indicates that illness can turn the poor nutritional condition for the worse.

8. Malnutrition may be caused by __________. A. a poor environment B. unwise food selectionsC. under-nutrition D. all of the above

9. It is implied in the passage that ________. A. over-nutrition is even more harmful than under-nutrition

B. malnutrition has serious effect on child’s physical developmentC. the nutritional condition of young child deserves more concern than that of adult D. the nutrients intake can be improved as the child grows up

10. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. The difference between well and poorly nourished children. B. The effects of nutrition on children. C. The cause of malnutrition. D. The importance of balanced dietary intake.

Passage 3 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstanding between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crisis; that they talk too much about certain problems — and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationship. I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young. Young people often irritate parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents; this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste. Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they did approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog(处于劣势者): you can't win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents' control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can impress others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do. 11. This passage is primarily meant for____________.

A. parents B. teenagers C. educators D. psychologists 12. The first paragraph is mainly about____________. A. the teenagers' criticism of their parents B. the misunderstandings between teenagers and their parents C. the parents' complaints about their children D. the dominance of the parents over their children 13. Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles because they ____________. A. want to irritate their parents B. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and taste C. have no other way to enjoy themselves better D. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their own 14. Teenagers do not want their parents to approve of whatever they do because they________.

Passage 4 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. In the United States during 1992, any family of four with an annual cash income of less than $ 14, 335 (before taxes) was considered poor. The dollar amount was called the poverty line, an economic measuring rod devised in 1964. The line was set at three times the amount needed to provide the cheapest nutritionally balanced diet. The poverty line is adjusted annually for inflation. While the poverty line in the United States was more than $ 14, 000, the average annual per-person income in Bangladesh was $ 200, in Ethiopia $ 130, in Haiti $340, and In Mali 4 265. Anyone in those nations with an income of $ 14, 000 would be considered wealthy. During the Great Depression in the United States, when half the population was considered poor, a family with an income at the 1992 poverty line could afford to buy a house, a car, clothing and food. The reality of poverty varies with location and social and political conditions. Poverty basically means a lack of, or an insufficient amount of, the three primary physical needs--- food, clothing, and shelter. But for poverty to be recognized, it must exist alongside prosperity. Before the discovery of the New World, the American Indians would not have considered themselves poor, though they lived with only the bare necessities and a few handmade artifacts(人工制品). The severity of poverty varies, depending on the economic vitality of the nation in which it occurs. In the modern industrialized societies of Western Europe, North America, and Japan, there are many government services provided to ease poverty --- including free medical care and subsidized housing. The homeless of New York City and Los Angeles can usually find some shelter and a mission offering free meals. 16. You would be considered poor in America if ____.

A. You are out of a job.B. You earn less than three times the amount needed to provide the cheapest diet.C. You earn less than $ 14, 335 (before taxes) per year.D. The amount of money you earn is below the current poverty line.

17. The average annual cash income per person before taxes in the USA in 1992 was ____.A. more than $ 14, 000 B. $200 C. $14,335 D. about $3,580

18. The purpose of the example of the American Indians given in the 3rd paragraph is to show that poverty is _.A. absolute B. non-existent C. relative D. never recognized

19. Free medical care and subsidized housing most probably exist in ___ to relieve the poor and the needy.A. Bangladesh B. Haiti C. Canada D. India

20. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. From 1929 to 1933, 50% of the American population lived in poverty.B. Where there is prosperity, there is poverty.C. Poverty basically refers to a lack of clothing, housing and food.D. Anyone with an annual income around the 1992 American poverty line would be considered wealthy.

Passage 5Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completes a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs. Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them. 21. In Para.1, the sentence "... those days are gone, even in Hong Kong ..." suggest that____________.

A. in the past, finding a good career was easier in Hong Kong than elsewhereB. nowadays, everyone in Hong Kong has an equal chance of finding a good careerC. it used to be harder to find a good job in Hong Kong than in other countriesD. Hong Kong is no longer the good place for finding jobs

22. The word "relative" in Para. 2 could best be replaced by "____________". A. family B. comparative C. considerable D. slight 23. The advice given in the first sentence of Para.3 is to____________. A. find out what jobs are available and the opportunities for future promotion

B. examine the careers available and how these will be affected in the future C. look at the information on, and probable future location of, various careers D. study the opportunities and the kinds of training that will be available 24. The word "prospective" in Para. 5 is closest in meaning to "____________". A. generous B. reasonable C. future D. ambitious 25. In Para.5, the writer seems to suggest that____________.

A. interviewees should ask a question if they can't think of an answerB. pretending to understand a question is better than giving an unsuitable answerC. it is better for interviewees to be honest than to pretend to understandD. it is not a good idea for interviewees to be completely honest in their answers

The only certainties I’ve found in life are death and change. One is an end, the other a beginning. Change is life. Without change there would be no growth, no understanding, no relating and no surprises. We are by nature changing beings. Still, we seem to fear and resist it more than any other aspect of life.

Healthy human beings welcome the opportunity to adapt to new experiences. In fact they are quite comfortable in a constant state of change. They know about the possibility of becoming someone new each moment. Only habit and indifference prevent the rest of us from having the same outlook.

When we don’t care, or submit ourselves to patterns and routines, we begin to stagnate. We are inclined to accept the comfortable illusion that life is a series of habits and conditioned responses. In reality this is a comfort more like a disease, which leads to a kind of intellectual and emotional death. We can allow ourselves and dynamic world to go to waste. Ellen Glasgow, an American novelist, said, “The only differences between a rut(车辙)and a grave are their dimensions.”

To accept new ideas and give up old values and habits is not always comfortable. It is often easier for us to deny that there may be more appropriate, more creative possibilities for our lives. We fail to understand that when we resist potentialities, life becomes at best a continual struggle; at worst, it passes us by and we are left alone and lonely.

26. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Change is as inevitable as death. B. Some of us fear change because it leads to death. C. Change is characteristic of the life of human beings. D. Death is the inevitable result of change. 27. Which of the following is NOT true? A. All human beings want to be healthy by adapting to new experiences. B. Some people do not welcome change as a result of habit and indifference. C. Constant change results in comfort for some people. D. Healthy human beings are not subjected to habit and indifference, and keep on trying to become someone new. 28. According to the passage, “The only differences between a rut and a grave are their dimensions” suggests that ______. A. if we regard life as a series of habits and conditioned responses, our life actually ends B. some people die a kind of intellectual and emotional death C. death is inevitable D. too much comfort often results in death29. The word “stagnate” in paragraph 3 means ______. A. stop working hard B. stop developing C. become weak D. fall ill30. The author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph is ______. A. to tell us that if we resist change, we’ll suffer from loneliness in life B. to show the reason why some people do not accept new ideas or give up old values and habits C. to come to the conclusion that if we go against the law of change, it will be impossible for us to enjoy life D. to show that it is because of our desire to seek comfort that we tend to deny our lives

Passage 7Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according

to Dr. Lissy F. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at the university of California, Los Angeles, and a board

Page 7: 《大学英语4》综合复习资料file.open.com.cn/Lms/Article/2014-5-21/Article6353626923458715…  · Web view题型 题量 分值 合计 I. Reading Comprehension 阅读理解

member of the New Center for Aging at the Veterans Hospital. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concern 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.

However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor speed. This means that it took them longer to complete mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s, but into the 60s and 70s as well.

As for learning new things, and ability to remember, studies by Dr. Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “loss of memory” is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a pace.

In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decay (衰退), it is not necessarily a sign of a decay due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. This depression usually can be counteracted by counseling, a medical treatment with a psychologist, which fights depression. In American society, when an older person loses something, we tend to call him or her “senile”. But notice that when a younger person loses something, he does not blame it on senility or loss of memory. He finds some other excuse!

31. According to Dr. Jarvik’s studies, middle-aged and older persons should expect to ______. A. remember less B. reason betterC. learn fewer new things D. lose little ability to remember, reason or learn

32. A long term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that the only factor that declined over the years was __________.

A. the reasoning ability B. the psycho-motor speedC. the decline in knowledge D. the loss of intellectual ability

33. Both younger and older persons should realize that ____________. A. a sign of a decay due to old age is a natural lawB. mental decay due to aging is closely related to one’s health conditions C. a good emotional state can ensure a longer life D. mental decay due to aging is much less common than most of us believe

34. What is the probable meaning of “counteract” from the context? A. convinced B. lessened C. added D. rewarded

35. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage? A. People, either young or old, tend to view their mental decay incorrectly.

B. With ageing, one’s emotional state is on the decline. C. Old people are not well educated and are thus slow to pick up new things. D. The decline of intellectual ability is usually accompanied by the drop in psycho-motor speed.

Passage 8Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing

farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it. People who take part in hunting think of as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突) between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow. Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain. 36. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes ________. A. for recreation B. in the interests of the farmers C. to limit the fox population D. to show off their wealth 37. What is special about fox hunting in Britain? A. It involves the use of a deadly poison.

B. It is a costly event which rarely occurs. C. The hunters have set rules to follow.

D. The hunters have to go through strict training. 38. Fox hunting opponents often interfere in the game ________. A. by resorting to violence B. by confusing the fox hunters C. by taking legal action D. by demonstrating on the scene 39. A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to ________. A. prohibit farmers from hunting foxes

B. forbid hunting foxes with dogs C. stop hunting wild animals in the countryside D. prevent large-scale fox hunting 40. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. killing foxes with poison is illegal B. limiting the fox population is unnecessary C. hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violent

D. fox-hunting often leads to confrontation between the poor and the rich

Passage 9The old familiar song, “The Green, Green Grass of Home”, used to bring a smile, but the current drought in

Florida is turning so many green lawns into burned, brown fields ready for a fire to explode from a lightning strike or careless cigarette.

The situation is serious, but there are ways to solve the problem. According to Marshall McLuhan, a famous

Canadian educator, “Our age of anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s job with yesterday’s tools ― with yesterday’s concepts.”

Santa Barbara in California was faced with the same danger some years ago and the city officials called a meeting of the city engineers and water department to find new tools ― new concepts to save lawns.

The solution was gray water. The term gray water is given to the water we use when we wash our hands at the sink, take showers, wash clothes, etc. That water is going into the sewer (下水道) or septic tanks (化粪池) at an alarming rate.

The water can save lawns and trees without any harm. Santa Barbara developed an attachment that could be installed on the plumbing (管道设备) of the city homes for as little as $50 that would permit this valuable water to save lawns and landscaping from drying up without risk to the citizens. The city water department in Santa Barbara arranged to install the units and bill homeowners the small cost added to their low monthly payments until it was paid out.

The only gray water that is a threat is the water used in the washing machine and even that is safe to use on the lawn if you’re careful about what kind of soap you use.
