Maxch 16, 1970COLLEGE CAmJS PURCHASEDGod has answered our prayers in regard to property for the college. The answeri s n t T^at we used to dream ab out , but i t seems very suitable and practical now. Frona Togolese who will leave for his homeland soon, w have purchased a double lot andbuildings that can be adapted for our needs. The site is developed like an Africancompoundsurrounded on three sides and eventually four with block walls, most ofthe ground is paved, and four or five buildings spaced around the courtyard.

are thankful to have a sizeable sum of money in a building fund; this has enabled us to pay for the property and begin remodeling and construction. First on theagenda was a toilet and shower unit for the hostel, and a bathroom in the house thatwill be used to house African staff members. Those are virtually complete alreadyNow the work on the hostel has begun. New doors and windows will be added and screensand painting will be done. There will be five uni ts of two-room suites, each servingfour men. Suite is a very fancy word for two simple rooms; one for sleeping, another f o r study and r e l a x a t i o n .There i s a small two room building that will serve as a kit chen , but we mu stbuild at least a t emp or ar y she lt er f or a dining ?feen an xinfiniahed shgllbe mod if ied and completed for a classroom building. In the future there will be an art ic le in Horiaons, a long with pictures, so besure to watch for i t . are happy about this step that has been made. There islots of work to be done yet, but we can visualize the convenience and economy of i talready. We thank God f o r opening t h i s door.OTHER COLLEGE NEV7SThe students are now taking their turns at preaching in chapel. Most are doingvery well. This year s freshmen have made a fine beginning, and Dick Hostetter i shappy to see the good results of his homile.tics class. The sermons are far from perf e c t but God s t i l l speaks through them.In late February we had a party for the students on a Friday evening. I hadcharge of the games and was gratified when they really enjoyed them- Bible Charadesbased on the parables of Jesus was real exciting, as was the table game of Cootiethat we often played in Florida. Another h i ^ l i g h t . of the same evening was an unexpected, but welcome, hard rain. I t is early fo r the rains, but we- ve already hads e v e r a l t h a t broke th e h e a t f o r a day o r two.

    J u st t h is week we have f i n i s h e d out f i n a l exams f o r second term. We w i l l teachtwo weeks of t h e new term b e f o r e a brealc f o r E a s t e r vaca t ion. This i s the homestretch and Rifes arid Taylors are realizing how close furlou^ time is getting.One chapel period in February was particularly exciting: llr. Doku, T^iom I mentioned l a s t time, was here aga .n from ^eji and spoke in the service. He made i t areal ci^allenge to the students to comb pi'each in the North where there i s a strongIi5uslim i n f l u e n c e and where C h r i s t i a n workers a r e s c a r c e . He a ls o challenged theoa totrust the Lord for tueir Ixving arrangemants. A lively discussion ensued and God'sSpir i t seemed to be endocsirg the illei.ge in the response of the students. pray that sone of the a will be led to evangelize their Ghanaian countrymen in theNorth, a needy f i e l d .CHURCH NEWS VAPIOC;::. PLACESThe Kokomlemle '.hurcu contii.ue^i s+eaiilyt We see great need fo r building upthe young adults in the faith: many nave been irregular in their attendance. Theyouth group staged their Bible drama on th e Ten Virgins very smoothly, even thou^two of the Virgins cane too late to participate. Dick's sermon app lied the parablet o o u r l i v e s v e r y c l e a r l j .In February Taylors ar.d 1 went to Obrachire for a harveai ; service for UniversalChris t ian Church. Thar i b the f i r s t contact we've had with them in a long t ime, andwe decided i s much nicer to be f rie.^d ly with them than to be angry over our formertrouble. Kent preached and the three of us sang several specials. Two of our studentswere t h e r e f o r a whi le , t o o .

As of now, I aifi s t i l l on the U.C.C. quota, but ay visa rtins out April 12. Mr.KuEvi has written to the Immigration people asking to have me changed to Ghana Christian Church s quota. The business is not done yet, but we don't anticipate any difficulty. Nevertheless, i t s a good idea to pray, because w e re never quite sure vAiatw i l l happen h e r e .Yesterday I again shared a trip with the Taylor family. Fourth year student,Peter Barfi, had begun t o estab li sh a new congregation in Oda at the end of last summer, No one of the missionaries had visi ted there, and we wanted to see what he wasdoing and share i n the s e r v i c e s .The f i r s t service a f t e r a two-hour drive was in th e market place. Kent preachedwhile Peter conducted the r e s t of the service. He had a record player and an amplif ier to use. A good-sized crowd, m ostl y women and children, gathered around to l i st e n

Peter admitted that many of Ms f i r s t converts had backslid, and so in the nextworship service in their chapel room in the town there were only a handful of adults, but l o t s of c h i l d r e n . He seems confident t h a t a f t e r graduat ion, he can win manymore people when he works at i t full time. think if anyone can do i t Peter can.At the close of the service, one young man stepped out for Christ and we shared thatafternoon in his baptism in a quiet forest river ou ts ide of town. M Y 1970GREETINGS FROM GHANAlGHANA CHHISTIAN CHURCH CONVMTIONThe Easter convention v/as held in Accra th is year Jus t a blockfrom the college on an empty lo t . Mr Kuevi and some students worked hard to get cleared of t rash, including some rusty auto frames.Usually the framework of the shed i s made of bamboo but theycouldn t get any, so they made this one of young saplings of somesor t and topped with the usual palm branches. They arrangedthe usual amplifiers and-speaker platform with a big space l e f tbetween tha t and the f i r s t row of benches fo r dancing during thesinging .and offer ing .The convention began Thursday evening before Easter; I attended, but virtual ly nothing was said in Siglish. However some of ourKokomlemle teenagers sat with me so maybe my presence encouragedthem. The attendance was only fa i r an not a l l of the groups fromvillage churches ha^ arrived. The service started late and i t wasnearly 11:00 before I got home. Many of the people stayed in the college buildings. I f you wentthere, you saw dozens of people, cooking, eating, bathingor sleeping in every comer and in the courtyard. The children and babieshad come along, too, so was a l ive ly place .The convention was planned in i t s ent ire ty by the Ghanaian Christi ans . Each of our miss ionar ies was scheduled to preach a t l e a s tonce, and I led a v/orkship. All the res t of the preaching andconducting of the services and music was done by Ghanaians. Everyword had to be spoken in a t leas t two languages, a lthough Eng lishwas no t e x te n si ve ly u s ed .The morning and evening services were typical : lo t s of singing,Scrip-cure reading, offer ing, prayer, sermon, and songs by the singing lands (choirs) . Friday eftem.oon I stayed home to work on my

He hadbeen very sick with bronchitis and never did get to preach becauseof coughing. After the service I helped John Adjei show a fi lm-str ip of the Patriarchal Age. John had T/orked hard to put theScript on tape in Pante. I t was so late that most of the peoplehad gone home by the time i t was over. The batter ies got steadilyweaker, too, and I held my breath t i l l the las t slow, low words o u n d e d .

Easter morning we held a shortened Sunday School in the schoolbuilding; the people had cleared their things out in timel Becausemany of the people in our congregat ion don t care fo r the sp i r i tual is t type service, Ron conducted a r eg ula r s er vic e a t the schoolwith a good attendance. I went on down to the convention s i t e andthe others came l a t e r . In addit ion to the Lord s Supper, anotherspecial feature of that service v s an impressive ordination offour of the college s tudent s who will be preaching fo r Ghana Christian Churches. They wil l complete t he i r courses of study t h i s June.Afternoon ac t i v i t i e s were scheduled to begin a t JsOO. I was tenminutes l a t e but others were l a te r s t i l l and we f ina l ly got s ta r ted about 4:201 From my point of view the workshop on Sunday Schoo lteaching was very successful; I pray the par t ic ipants were blessedand helped. The s ix men and four women representing about 4 d ifferent congregations seemed genuinely interested and liven ed th esession v/ith questions and comments. They iinderstood English quite7/ell, so Christ ian t ransla ted into Tv/i or Ga only when they haddi f f icul ty . had the Twi and Ga outlin es fo r them to follow andke e p .I t r ied to give them suggest ions fo r preparing and present ing le ssons, keeping in mind that they probably had only a Bible for sourcemater ia l and littl or no money fo r teaching a ids . At the end Igave them each about a dozen chi ldren s S.S. papers to keep aiid usein the i r teaching. I was so glad t ha t Berwick, PA. had j u s t sent

    DOROTHY EUNSOtr NE\^SLETTERNO . 20

    JULY 1970

Dear Chr i s t i a n F r i e nd sVacation is here at last , bu t i t looks like a busy summer anyway. Personnelchanges have been made s ince the last Newsletter. Smaages' health problems weresuch that their doctor recommended they not return to a tropical climate, so theDavid McHenrys will be coming in August without them Edgar andMiabel Nichols leftin late May for furlough. Kent Taylor has gone home for the summer to raise neededfunds for an extra year s stay; the family is staying here. n Jun6 15th we bid a

sad farewell to the Rifes who will be in th e States on furlough unt i l September of'^1 . That leaves Dick Hostetter and his- harem to hold down th e fort unti l fall-, e hope to be not much trouble, and maybe even^a l i t t le help in the busy summera h e a d

Academically speaking. . . the last half terra spcid quickly by and we managedto complete the usual final exams papers, and notebooks. Just a couple weeks beforeschool let out, I finally took ray turn at conducting chapel by presenting a flannel-graph lesson and conducting a related Bible Drill. Dick Hostetter will be ActingPrincipal while Ron Rife is gone and Nancy Hostetter will be treasurer. The biggestnews is that Christian Adjei, who has just completed his fourth year, will be addedto the faculty in September. This is a small step toward our ult^-mate goal of putting the school into Ghanaian hands. e re jo ice that we hav3 a man of Christian scaliber ready for this responsibility so soon in the history of the college. Prayfor him that God wil l use him mightily in this ministry to his own people.Since we had our f i rs t four-year degree graduates, we tried to make graduationas fine as possible. Principal Rife ordered his elegant master's academic gotm andhood from America . Professors l iostetter and Eunson ordered the appropriate hoodsand wore them with borrowed Ghanaian gowns. e rented the necessary apparel frbm theUniversity for the speaker (a field worker for Scripture Union) and for the twograduates. The chairman (Master of Ceremonies), Hr. Vigbedor from the Ministry ofEducation, brought his own finery. With the six third-year students in the processiondressed in bri l l iant Kente cloth, we x^ere a colorful sight. e rented a nrce ^auditorium just up the hill from the college. Mr and Mrs Rife cooperated in handingout the diplomas and various ax^ards Since all the thirdyear students ^re passingout (the common term for graduating), there will be no fourth year class next year. After the ceremonies, we served soft drinks and biscuits (cookies) from a convenientserving window at the back of the auditorium. e were encouraged to see that morerelatives and church members of g raduate s came than ever before,Aword about the graduates Four.of the six th ird year finishers are preaching for Ghana Christian Churches One of these has been offered a job in a secondaryschool in Takoradi. Kent Taylor has long been interes ted in establishing a newcongregation in that city and vjill do what he can to help Julius laianch one Thefifth young man was highest in his class and has a real drive for, the Lord's workHis mother is a prophetess, self-styled leader of an indigenous spiritualist church. e pray James will use his great ability to center converts* love and loyalty onChrist and net on any earthly leader. The sixth student has no definite plans at themoment but has expressed a desire to work and x^itness in the Upper Region, whosepeople have had l i t t le opportunity to hear the gospel compared with other areas.Christian Adjei will teach in the college and continue as associate minister ofKokomlemle Christian church. Peter Barfi has been working with a struggling group inOda but may soon move to Prampram to teach in a nevj Christian Secondary School. The week since graduation has been a busy one fo r me Last year I assistedRon in a Christian Education workshop for the second year students. Tliis year I wasthe leader and Nancy Hostetter helped me Last year s piano hinges pulled out of theflannelboards, so this year we tried hinges cut from old trouser legs and so far theywork fine. It s good glue The main task was to prepare a whole year s visual aidsfor the Junior X graded lessons and also to teach the lessons in brief form as areview and to demonstrate the correlation of lessons and aids. This year I assignedsome of the lessons for the students to study and teach. They weren t a ll top-notch,but don t we learn by doing? e xrarked all day Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday andFriday from 8:30 to 1:30. I'm sure most of the five will put these valuable materialsto good use

Religiously speaking. . . Kokomlemie Christian Church has taken a historicstep: They have called Brother John Adjei, third year graduate of G.C.C., to betheir minister beginning July 5. John has shown great zeal and effectiveness inhouse-to-house calling for some months with Dick. This was not required of any

student and speaks well of John s desire to serve and learn. He came and preached bothservices one week, and th e members voted unanimously to c a l l hira. Ron and Dick haveboth taught th e p eo pl e a bo ut t h ei r r e sp o n si bi li ti es to th e preacher and to the Lord. How we w i l l be praying that John will also be mightily used of God in winning souls inthis community of Accra John loves th e Lord, seems to love people and t al ks e as il ywith them, and speaks Fante, Ga, and English.Relations are not always harmonious between th e missionaries an d thel eaders of Ghana C h r i s t i a n Church; e . g . they a re disappointed i f we make land o rproper ty deci si ons without consulting them, and we are annoyed i f they act too possessiveor i f they ask fo r more money. Pray for us that a l l of us will earnestly and humblyseek to cooperate in th i s v en tu re fo r C h r i s t .

Domestically speaking. . . my house i s crowded with e x tr a f u rn it ur e. I amusing some things of Rifes, and until IIcHenrys come and take what will belong to themand until Smaages things are disposed of,, i t looks like a furniture store. . . A fewnights ago the termites swarmed. They came by the thousands, swarmed around the outsidelights, and beat their wings against the screens. Only a few crawled under th e door, and Roland seemed to enjoy catching and eating them. . . Tlie grass, hedge, and flowersare green and growing quickly from the rains. The whole city looks prettier with thedust washed o ff. When one l i f t s h is eyes from the clu ttered and dir ty s t r e e t s to thebeautiful palm trees and other verdant foilage, he can see the beauty of tropical Accra.

Conclusively speaking. . . In th e two months after Easter, .about 65 peopledied i n Akim Hanso. Wen the disease was i d e n t i f i e d ; as yellow fever, an d t here wasan outbreak in Nsawam, only 20 miles away, Hrs. Rife arranged for h ealth officials tocome to th e s ch o o l an d i n n o c u l a t e a l l th e s t u d e n t s . We were v a c c i n a t e d b e f o r e leavingA m e r i c a . Newest converts a t Kokomlemle C h r i s t i a n Church a r e a photographer an d h i swife. The man stepped out for Christ at a school where Kent Taylor was preaching fo rservices conducted regularly by one of the college students. Mr. Boahene had beenasked to come and take pictures of the event. wo student preachers talked further, withhim the following week and baptized him. His wife has since been baptized. Since theylive near the school, they were encouraged to become a part of this congregation. After one rainy shopping trip downtoim I noted two interesting sights inmy diary: the traffic policemen left their mid-street posts to stand under the drier-Store anr^ ipf th p tTfiffic. battle i t out for themselves. Occasionally, you seea dirty, unkempt man roaming the streets completely naked. These are mad man anda p p a r e n t l y h a r m l e s s .The contractor who is working on th e Abeka school buildings has beenneglecting to pay his x^orkers, so we are a bit uneasy about the slowdown on that work^^The new hostel is ready except for interior paint, as are the housemaster's quarters;..and library rooms. One of the students is doing a ll the painting to work off next- y e a r s school f e e s . 'You may be weary of reading, so I l l stop and leave you some time fo rworking and praying fo r the Kingdoiain your town and here. May the remaining summer, days bring you f*uitful labor as well as r e s t and recreation. :

Dear Friends in Chris t ,May I t^ll you a l i t t le about my visi t to Akim Manso Sunday.^July 19th? I* lieft. town before 8:00 A.M. with four of our Ghanaian '' 'church attendeesf are meirf)ers. Traffic was light so we covered 'the 84 miles of so^e^good and some bad road in less than two hours; ;Samuel Osei, the preacher, met us in the market place and took us to 'his house to rest a bi t He did not take us to the service immediate-:ly so we wouldn't have to wait while the people slowly gathered andgot warmed up with songs. Wejhad time to imload some of Samuel's '

books we had brought from the college and a new sewing machine forhis wife. The machine is part of our scheme to help some of thestudent preachers support themselves i f necessary, while preaching. Our general plan was to wait unti l they graduated, but in ouropinion Samuel had already proved himself, so he got his boost twoyears early. He is the tenor in our mixed quartet, so I x^as pleased ' t fe l l my lo t to help. At l a s t I can write the irs t Christ ian ' ^Church Youth Group in Orlando and te l l them that-part of their special gift has been put to use. The machine is a hand-operatedSinger . Mrs. Osei i s a seamstress .

At last we went to the service. They have made a lot of progress since my last visit a year ago for the foundation stone laying. They have paid i t a ll themselyes except for 200 given them two yearsago by the missionaries. The block walls are finished, the galvanizedroof i s on (so important for the rainy season), some of the insidesurfaces are plastered, and sturdy windows and doors are in place. The floor is s t i l l dirt . About 150 people were present and that many; .more could easily have been accommodated. By the time we arrived .they had nearly finished the congregational singing, but four group^ ' >.presented special songs. The Lord s Supper quietly and reverentlyserved while the people sang softly an appropriate song. A morelively song characterized the offering time as each person came to i Jfjthe front to present his offering. Then i t was nqr turn:- I presented one of Christ s parables f^indaccompanying lesson idLth flannel v isua l a id s. I had printed the three-j

    Dear Fr i ends in Chr i s t ,, The l st News l e t t e r was c l o s ed wi th a no t e abou t ou r vaca t i o n on th e V ol ta . I wro te

    tha t before we ac tua l ly went and as t turned out Barbara Tay lo r wa s ll during the wholeweek . She r ema ined on ou r r e t u r n t o Acc r a and on h e r s econd v s t to a doc t o r wasadmitted to the hospi ta l with infecti9u;s hepat i t i s . In;.the weeks since tha t f i r s t week ofAugust we a l l have shared the shopping cooking errands and other tasks fo r the family.Unt i l th i s l a s t week when Mrs. McHenry took ove r I have usua l ly prepared t h e i r main m ealof the da y a t noontime. I m get t ing lo t s of cooking experiencel

Barbara came home on August 18th . but wil l remain vir tua l ly bedfas t unti l . November 1naybe longer. Her husband Kent returned from a summer of speaking engagements in the U.S.on ^ptember 4 ^ a y for Barbara; i t s discouraging to be so l imited in a cti vit y for a l lthese weeks. A ll of us who were in c lo se c on ta ct with her got gamma globulin shots fo rprotection. Having ta ke n o ve r the gathering of materials for her S. S. class I appreciatemore a l l the time she had been spending on i t Two of the college students are doing :theac tua l t each ing .

Since John Adjei took over as aninister a t Kokomlemle, there have been th ir teenbaptisms including four young people ffe praise the Lord fo r th is growth. When t he c ol le ge moved to i t s new campus they took a l l their furni ture of courseso the congregation has ordered chairs tables and benches of i t s own. This i s a verylarge expenditure for them, but they have responded well w ith extra gif t s so that the ..accumulated surplus i s not ent i r e ly wiped out .Bro. Adjei i s woikirig very hard to keep open the l ines of comniunication and fellowship among the members. He keeps a bulletin board of stat is t ics and announcements, andlast week he mimeographed a newsletter. Last Sunday night we enjoyed two duets preparedand presented by four Ghanaians. This indicates a real sense of serving and sharing.

A t r ia l merger between the congregations of Ghana Christian Church and those calledChurches o f J es us about 20 in number, has been worked out. Dick Hostetter has had numerousprea^jhing and teaching contacts with the lat ter but the arrangements were made by theGhanaians. This could be a fine step in encouraging ^ind strengthening both groups. Please ^pray that proper use and repor ting be made of the money that they share for common projectsso that t wil l not hinder or destroy thei r brotherhood in spir i tua l matters .The chairman produced a newsletter for all of the Ghana Christian Churches in August. This, too, could be an effective tool in binding the Christians closer together. Althoughthe financial report included with the newsletter did not have a Balance on Hand line atl eas t t i s a step in the r igh t directioni

Dick Hostetter has been spending much time recently with a small group of Christiansin a part of Accra called Kaneshie. Dick will help them establish a new congregation inthat area. He will help with teaching and preaching for a year, if necessary, while at thesame time giving on the job training to a college student from that very place. Pray fort h i s K a ne sh ie g ro up . ..

Now about school matters I helped a bit during the summer with recording grades, notifying old students of reopening, a makeup session of interviews and tests for prospectivefreshmen, and arranging the office furniture and supplies after i ts removal to the new campusMy role was very small compared with that of Dick Hostetter, He carried out the daily anddetailed supervision of actual construction, saw that the moving was done from old to newcampus installed the louvres and window glass himself, and even swept the rooms and helpedlevel the ground and plant grass sprigs and flowers. You can see that his broken rid didnot slow him down for longl Nancy Hostetter does a superb job vrith the school financialrecords. I t makes for eff ic iency to have the Treasurer and Acting Principal in the samehou s e h o l d .Just around the opening of school, I spent some hours with student help cleaningand rearranging the library. are trying some new methods and rales for library usage, hoping to. lo.s e fewer books.Eleven of the nineteen accepted freshmen actually reported for orientation and onthe whole seem quite capable of the work. Only time will reveal their true dedication anddesire to preach .Every one of the upperclassmen returned, and i t is surely fine to have them back andto be beginning this new year of classes on a new attractive campus I have throughly ^enjoyed the first two weeks of teaching. Mr Christian Adjei one of our new teachers, isdoing well with his classes. The only problem is that they can only find two Greek booksto share among two students and the teacher I
