Dear Chris t ian Fr iendsGreetings from Ghana after a long silence. God has been watching over us througha very busy six months. I really did not intend to wait this long. The college opened in mid-September with 49 full time students and two part-time.Joseph Nsiah, Enoch Nyador, Akua Eghagha and I were the teachers. Enoch wasappointed Dean of Students and Mrs. Eghagha and I shared the post of Dean of WomenEnoch's work included supervision of the students' Thursday afternoon work program. As Communications teacher, he also did al l the chapel speaker scheduling. Theresponsibilities of the rest of us I mentioned in September. The first term went very smoothly, except for a constantly overflowing septic tank.Sometimes i t seems as if the classes are the only things that go smoothly. Afterfinals week and a Christmas party, we closed first term on December 5. We are notsuperstitious, but all too often we have electricity problems during exam week. Soit was this year. The power was on long enough the last day for me to use my electric mixer to bake five cakes for the party, and we had light for the party, too.My shipment did not get cleared early, but finally reached my house November 17right in the middle of David Kalb's visit. Fortunately, the final clearing andtransport took place on a Monday and we have no classes on Mondays. There were sixstudents, one of our watchmen, the administrative assistant who had done weeks ofpreliminary work, Enoch Nyador and I at the harbour from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.first three hours were spent sitting in the sun while a couple of people tried tolocate a forklift. The actual customs examinations didn t take more than two hours, but there were lots of tedious waits and running after papers in between. What arelief to get home about 6:30 and find Joseph waiting with all the rest of thestudents to help unload. We put lots of things on my carport and then chained oneof the dogs there every night for three weeks till we finally got everything movedi n s i d e

I hate to admit i t but there are still three full drums sitting in my dining room.Things get unpacked as time permits. Meanwhile, the compound kids climb on themand play hide and seek. The most used items so far are Kool-Aid, cake mixes, candles, and cold tablets. And to think I was afraid the slightly used candlesmight go to waste We have just finished two weeks of off-and-on power. That waspreceded by nine days of no power at all The problem seems solved, for the timebeing.David Kalb, former principal and teacher, was here from October 27 to November24. He taught a concentrated course in Corinthians, spoke in chapel and studentdevotions, visited churches every weekend and visited the Hostetters in Sunyani. He also conducted a Seminar at the college his final weekend. We appreciated hishelp and challenging sermons and also his morale-lifting sense of humor. I prepared one hot meal a day for him (he finished teaching at 2 p.m.) and he fendedfor himself the rest of the time. David stayed in Couches' house. Since hisreturn home, the Kalbs have adopted a baby boy, born to a single woman who wantedhim to be raised in a Christian family.I just made three church visits before Christmas. One was for a harvest, which is

Our lo ca l p re acher agreed to keep the s ec re ta ry sh ip o f the church committee untilJanuary to relieve me bu t there were s t i l l many ways to serve. The plan for meto teach a twelve-week course in the church on Bible Survey was successfully completed with good attendance and great enthusiasm. Packets of Kool-Aid were givenas prizes for those who did exceptionally well, and l i t t l e cakes of motel soapwent to those a l i t t l e less accomplished.Thanksgiving day star ted with a community American church service a t 8 a.m. Unfortunately, i t was the most poorly attended I remember during my years here. TheHostetters had come down to se e David Kalb off, and stayed through Thanksgivingday. e ate a nice dinner together and were joined by a single Mennonite nursewho has been a friend for a long time. Sherrie did the l ion s share of the planning and cooking. The f i r s t full week of Christmas vacation was spent marking papers and figuringgrades, and in working with Joseph and Dadzie (the Admin. Ass t .) to set a plumberto work on building a new soakaway to solve the perennial septic tank problem. ealso hired two student vacation workers and I helped set their tasks for them. The following week, the very day the church was to leave town for the Christmasconvention, the cover of the sept ic tank broke and fel l into the tan k. What a disaster . Thankfully, no one was standing on i t at the time. e had been trying forweeks to get a truck to come and pump out one of the other tanks. Now how couldwe get this one pumped out in time to fish out the broken cover and then completethe soakaway before school reopened in January? When the two elders came to meetwith the church members before leaving for the convention, they said they knewsomeone a t the appropriate City Council department. So a f t e r the bus l e f t withthe members the elders in their car accompanied Joseph and Dadzie to the CityCouncil to see their friend. n arrangement was made to come the following day topump out the tank. ow thankful we were I had gone on to the convention with mytruck f u l l , leaving the men to shop for cement, iron rods and o the r ma te ri al s .Before school reopened, the septic tank walls had been repaired and improved, although the new cover was not cast. The new soakaway was completed and a hugehole dug to extend an existing soakaway for kitchen water . With this many students, the old systems were just overloaded. The method used to obtain huge rocks to f i l lth e soakaways i s most interes t ing. A German contractor is working on a very niceroad quite near us. In the grading process, lots of big rocks are pushed to theside of th e roadway. Young boys gather them into piles using the i r wagons thathave car wheels on them. Dadzie went to them for both soakaways; the second timewith students to help with the loading . First , he saw the regular workers and gavethem a small t i p . Then he went to the boys and bought rocks from them. The students loaded them into my truck and Dadzie brought them home. The second soakawayrequired five loads I t was hard work but lots cheaper than paying a regularsel ler to bring them in his own truck. Many of the rocks were bigger than watermelons. y truck was full of d i r t , inside and out, but a couple of students cleanedi t like new the following day.e had a fire in Enoch s house the f i r s t week of vacat ion, t oo . n accident with asmall kerosene cooker ruined the vinyl flooring i t wasn t in very good shape tobegin with) damaged a chair and makeshift counter, scorched one wall cabinet, ruinedtwo plas ti c re fr ige ra tor drawers si t t ing on the floor, damaged a skylight and the

motor cover of a cei l ing fan, and covered four rooms with much smoky soot. Again,we are thankful no one was injured and the damage was not worse. More work for thevacation workers. When they s tarted to scrub down the walls , they got shocks, eventhough the main switch had been shut o f f . We fetched the e l e c t r i c i a n , a churchmember and he disconnected the l ines coming in from the pole. Later, he discoveredi t was only minor damage around the fan. In between other jobs, the walls werescrubbed twicewhitewashed twice, then painted. Last week rained and we discovered the s ky li gh t l eak s, so we a r e n t quite finished.

The convention attendance was down, and only two churches participated in the youthquiz, but other things seemed to go very well. Only one young man gave his life toChrist, and the leaders are going to take greater care in choosing an accessiblesite in the host town or village from now on. The closing night, the youth of thehost church put on an excellent play and scripture program. The local preacher swife translated the play for me so I could enjoy i t too. This time, we stayedthrough Sunday night and came home Monday morning. beka our local church) wonthe youth Bible Quiz again and they were thrilled with the gorgeous new trophy Ibrought back, thanks to Daytona Christian youth sharing their own Bible owl trophies with us. The Best Church trophy went to the host church.Christmas Day always begins with church service and then fo r dinner, I went to amissionary friend's house just a mile and a half away. There were about a dozenpeople there. The day after Christmas Boxing Day for the British) I took threeGerman ladies, (one is married to a Ghanaian), to the beachjto join ^ annual gathering of many missionaries and Christians from various countries. I decided not toswim, but enjoyed vis i t ing with others. After that, i t was straight, hard work, except for New Year s Day trying to finishthe repainting in Enoch s house, unpacking in mine and Couches, and the completecleaning of Couches. Mensah worked every Saturday for a month in addition to hisregular work. Our preacher resigned at the end of December to join an evangelistic ministry basedin another town. He is s t i l l around and helps us some with call ing, but i t is morework on the rest of the leaders. From January 11 through February 1 we had specialspeakers on Christian marriage, both morning and evening services. We made specialarrangments for the children to be cared for during the entire service in the morning. People were reluctant to miss the seminar , as we called i t so I helped withthe children two of those Sundays. After their lesson and worship, we brought thosewho had parents in th e se rv ic e down to Enoch's yard to play. That is hot, strenuous work. They get dr inks from a common cup out of a big plastic bucket. At thevery end of the last Sunday, Jeremiah Couch (3) picked up a handful of dirt anddumped i t into the bucket. End of drinksIn January, I also resumed the committee secretaryship, and there are so many things in the works that we have had several meetings already. One that was held afterthe evening marriage seminar lasted t i l l 11 p.m.- The elders didn't have their car,so I took them home, accompanied by two of the deacons. We got home at midnight.School reopened January 5 with only one less student. Sickness had prevented himfrom completing f irs t term. I dropped four hours of teaching since David Couch wascoming to pick up Church History, but added two hours of Basic Christian Doctrine.Hostetters came down on the 12th and as many as possible jammed my truck to meetCouches at the a ir po rt th at night. Their truck had to be reserved for them andtheir luggage. I t was delightful to see them and Faith and Jeremiah made facesand played with the Hostetter kids through the plate glass window while Davidcleared the i r luggage t hrough cus toms .I fixed most of their meals except for breakfast for five days and they got resettledvery quickly. Their coming relieved me of a lo t of responsibility and David pickedup a lo t more on his own. Now as soon as I ge t caught up on a backlog of correspondence Us you know ) and finish the unpacking, I expect to get at the library workwhich has been to ta l ly neglected

The college-owned transportation business is now on the verge of starting. Muchred tape has delayed things until now. The government does not allow aliens to runtransportation businesses, so all th e non-Ghanaians had to be removed from th e

The new property is paid for in cedis and we are making our monthly payments to repaythat loan. The Bloomsburg P church gave more than 5 000.00 toward these paymentsand other individual gifts are also greatly appreciated. We ar e going to need morehelp before we ar e through. Please pray about what you might be able to do. Wehave access to one of th e living room/bedroom units but other tenants ar e st i l l inthe house. This is a big problem because many landlords demand two years advanceand so they have to struggle hard to find new rooms. The former owner has movedout but has not given us the key. Dear Chris t ian Fr iends,I am writing in one of the worst hot seasons I remember. For the first time duringmy yparq in fihana, T am running an air-conditioner night and day in my dining room/kitchen and sleeping there a t night.Christian Adjei arrived back in Ghana March 6 and he is very happy to be back. Hewas able to stop and see his oldest son in London Christian kept working on histhesis through the end of second term and was able to finish his rough draft duringEaster vacation. I really admire the discipline he exercised. ow he has onceagain taken up the responsibilities of Principal of the college and Chairman of theChristian Churches. We are thankful for all th e gifts tha t made the completion ofhis education possible.A new area of endeavor in connection with t he col lege is a series of planningmeetings by committee and subcommittee to work out improved organization andfunction and to make plans for development. y current assignment is chairman of asubcommittee to write job descriptions for all college employees. We are sure thisexercise will clearly show that some are overworked. I am not my busy schedulecomes now from my voluntary church work.)The students had two weeks of practical experience in various churches the f i rsttwo weeks of April and then two weeks of Easter vacation. One of the students, anold friend, di d his practicals with our congregation, so two of us did some extracalling with him. We also had a time of discussion about the objectives of aproposed now standing committee on Evangelism and Shepherding. We have not beenvery efficient about that work and have fallen behind in the last few years.I am in charge of one of the teams of children s helpers f or Sunday morning servicesWe had the second and fourth Sundays in April, which included Palm Sunday. I t is aChristian t radi t ion here that children come to church with Palm branches woven intopleasing designs and adorned with flowers. After the lesson, they insisted onmarching around what passes for a block here, singing and chanting in a very niceway The sun was scorching, but the children were so thrilled, we didn t have theheart to refuse them. Even the three-year-olds tr udged along behind. It is good to report that all my barrels are now unpacked. The piles and odd boxesof stuff remain here and there, bu t progress is being made. So far, I ve givenbath towels to about ten preachers, and they are very, very appreciative.Another small step of progress is my beginning to work on library matters. InMarch I was forced into i t by a very disturbing situation: termites had gotteninto the library books and hymn books stored in an outdoor storeroom at EnochNyador s house. I was chagrinned to see money and hard work turned in to holes , nomatter how fascinating the designs. The Couches and several Ghanaians helped emptythe^boxes,-brush off the termites and lay many in the sun t aw dr y. Fortunatejy, hundreds were untouched, fifty ar e somewhat dirty, three dozen need rebinding, andabout a dozen are totally useless. We moved all the good ones promptly to the

Also, th e under-f loor plumbing and rough f loor of the new bathhouse were completed. We had towait for the city engineer s approval to proceed. He has come this week, so wewill rush to accomplish as much as possible before schoo l r eopens on Sept. 15th.Our administrative assistant , John Dadzie, brought his wife and daughters herethe end of June and moved into one of the two room uni ts . For his f i r s t two yearsof employment, he vis i ted his family once a month in a city 130 miles from Accra.Thank you for helping this family be together. Our former par t- time s tuden t secretary, Manuel Adjei, has been employed as fu l ltime office manager and beginning teacher. He is our f i f th Ghanaian teacher. Heand his wife and two children are l iving in one of the three room units a t the newsit

Each of these two s ta f f units is to be enlarged and improved and given a privatebath and kitchen. None of our teachers make a very good salary, but we try hardto give them decent l iving conditions. These two s t a f f units and the studentbathhouse are what we need the other 5000.00 for. Thank you for considering i t .The end of May and the f i r s t part of June, I enjoyed a wonderful t r ip to Zimbabwefor the 1987 Missionary Seminar f or Chri st ia n Church missionaries in Africa.Nearly all of the sermons and workshops tha t I attended were excellent and thefellowship with about 80 others was delightful af ter working in relat ive isolationfrom Christian church co-workers) fo r nearly a year. I was particularly interested in ideas on conservation and nurture of new Christ ians in an urban se t t ingand also ideas on what is Christian marriage in Africa. Many others are wrestlingwith these challenges too. I t was a joy to meet many people whom I ve read aboutfo r y ears but had never met, and to see again some whom I have seen occasionally.I t surprised me that the Jack Pennington family, the Gordon Nelsons, Jayne LindaFree, Becky and Greg Johnson, and Phil Hudsom a l l have t i es in Florida. Suchgatherings make a grea t cont ribut ion to our emotional and spir i tual health and givean impetus to improved cooperation among the missionaries a ll over Africa.I t was interest ing to tour Zimbabwe Christian College and to compare their programwith ours. I wish we had some of their nice physical faci l i t ies bu t perhaps theywould l i ke to have some o f our f ine Ghanaian t e a che r s .Graduat ion took place for us on July 18 with a record-breaking class of 18. DickHostetter, former teacher and principal of the college was guest speaker . He wasin the middle of a two month working v is i t with his son Jeff in Sunyani. RonRife was also on the platform, as he and his wife had come back for another workingvis i t with us in Accra. The sixteen diploma students were very handsome in t he i rmulti-colored, handwoven Kente cloths draped over the l e f t shoulder. The girlshad on white blouses and Kente skirts .) (2)Dick Hostetter was very busy with much preaching and t each ing in Sunyani. ThenSherrie decided with Jeff th at she should go home to the States for needed surgery. Grandpa added a lo t of childcare to his daily responsibilities Sherriewas gone about five weeks and came back s t i l l weak bu t painfree. With the help ofa housegirl, friends and a loving heavenly Father, the men and three small children managed well. Sherrie is gaining strength day by day. Jeff will begin training two G graduates (and friends) in Sept. in a church-planting program. We are s t i l l growing and changing in our administrative procedures and financialarrangements. Joseph Nsiah and I are now advisors with Christian Adjei, ourprincipal, to make administrative decisions for which there is no time in facultyimprovements, including the preparation of a syllabus for every class we teach. We have two new subcommittees; I am on one deciding on textbook policy. Josephis working overt ime with the^part- time accountant to gist th e fiscal year booksin order and work out new accounts for the new budget, and other f inancial puzzleswhich must be solved quickly so that normal spending can be resumed. (I don't meananything is out of order ).David is Building and Maintenance Director and has put two new windows in thel ibrary that were jus t open screened squares. He replaced broken louvers, so nowth e dust intake is considerably reduced. I shared an office workroom with othersseveral months ago but now i t is for my use alone. The other teachers have officesof the i r own for the f i r s t time in our hi s tory Most o f the off ices are in whatwas the men's dorm. The girls will also be housed there, and all the men movedto the new s i t e I use my office for l ibrary work and s t i l l have my study here int h e hous eBefore graduation I taught on marriage a t a Sunday evening service a t a church inAccra where a student husband and wife team minis ter . The weekend a f te r graduationI went back to the town where the rain cut shor t a marriage seminar in May. Thistime we were able to complete i tI finally finished the detai ls on about 150 books and got them onto the shelveswith student help. There is more work waiting. Our new Evangelism/Sherpherding committee in the church is now well-established.We are in the process of gathering information for a card f i le on all members. We are working on a Prayer Partner Plan for new members and are in the processoT recruit1ng~ChristilmsnEd take part fn i fThere have been two early morning baby-naming.ceremonies in recent months. Inthe t radi t ional way, l iba t ion was poured to some gods in the ceremony. But theseChristians just sing hymns and pray and formally announce the baby's name. Thereare two glasses--one of water and one of a soft drink (traditionally i t wasschnapps ). The presider admonishes the baby to le t his/her mouth speak only thet ruth and call water by i t s correct name and drink by i t s correct name. As hesays each phrase, he dips his finger into the appropriate glass and puts a l i t t l ein the baby's mouth. After the ceremony, refreshments are served and those whowish, give gif ts to the baby and parents. The other day there were twelve children on my porch playing church. They havedone this often but this time there was a new twist One boy preached inEnglish and the o the r in te rp re te d in to Twi. Just l ike a t real church Let'shope our l i fe in Christ also appeals to the i r d esire to im itateMay we a ll be more serious in our desire and efforts to im itate C hrist .
