Dear Fr i ends in Chr i s tIt is a pleasure to report to you that I have survived my first semester of graduateschool. The quantity of reading is large and keeps me busy eve ry day, includingSunday. Several of us were able to complete the five core courses required for graduation. We are looking forward to courses of our own choice (within required guidelines) this

    s eco n d s e m e s t e r . I h a v e f i f t een h ou rs th is s e m e s t e r .It was a blessing to obtain university-owned, off-campus housing. The folks ofCapital Ci ty Chri st ian Church where I ve been attending were very generous in lendingme some household equ ipment so I did not need t o dup li ca te what I already have in Ghana.

I drive each day to the University stadium and park there . A shutt le bus t ravels betweenthe stadium and the rest of the univers i ty . I have enjoyed most of my classes. Myclassmates are of varied ages, backgrounds and beliefs and i t s an interesting experienceto be in a s tate un ivers ity . As never before, I am aware of the amused contempt in whichmany hold f ai th in Christ . Not that I h av e b ee n r idiculed in any way. Unbelievers aremuch t oo pol it e and to le rant for that , and there are believers in my classes, too. I t ismore a realization that Chr is ti ans a re a minority in the universi ty world. I have a grea trespect for Thom and Mary Lou Miller and their ministry in Christ ian Campus House here .

During Christmas vacation I paid a visit to Dorothy Hackworth, the Christian friendwhose home I shared during my first three furloughs. She is suffering from Lou Gehrig sdisease and living with a brother and his wife in Dayton, Ohio. The rest of the time Ispent with my parents in P enns ylv an ia . V ario us other family members came and went, and Enoch Nyador also came up from Emmanuel School of Religion and s pent te n days withus. His s tud ies a re going very well. He plans to take two courses during their Janauryintersession so that by the time he begins h is th esis n ex t year , h is cou rs e load will bel ighter .

I already have begun an independent study-project that will be officially registered forthe summer session. I t involves some invest igat ion into the book col lec tions owned byvarious Bible Colleges here in t he S ta te s, the prepara tion of a composite list appropriateto the size and curriculum of Ghana Christian College, and th en the acquisition of asmany of those books that we do not hav e but can afford as soon as the faculty in Ghanaindicates their priorities. When I have the books, I will process and catalog them. Myadv isor i s very interested in the project and wants me t o p roduce the catalog cards on oneof the computers in o ur la b. This whole project will build up our collection anotherstep in th e s ho rt run, and in the long run will help us to work at it in a systematic wayfo r a b a l a n c e d t o t a l .

In addition to Master s degrees for the teachers , certain library size is one of thestandards of the accrediting association in Africa we are looking at. This is not anintellectual endeavour unrelated to our mission work in Ghana. I t is a means of workingto reach a mark of excellence in preparing Ghanaian men and women to teach and p re achC h r i s t .

I f any of you have books you are willing to donate , you may send me the titles andauthors. Then I can let you know if i t would duplicate what we a lready have or if itwould make a positive contribution to the l ibrary.

The re is a gap of six weeks between Florida State s spring semester and the summersession necessary to complete my degree. Although my plans are not certain, I maymake a trip to v is it churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania and spend the second half of thebreak working on t he l ib ra ry project .Now to Ghana. This year marks t he set ti ng of a new record i n numbe r of studentsat Ghana Christian College. The freshman class has 2 members, including 4 women. One Ugandan t ransfer student , 8returning upperclassmen, and a former studentreturned to improve h is r ecord makes a total o f 4 This year s schedule includes thefourth year classes. Rick Fulton was unable to return for first semester so each of the

three men teachers had to te ac h 6 hours a week. T ha t is an extremely heavy load withal l t he o th er responsibilities each has. Deb Couch taught Bible Survey. They al l madeit with the help of the Lord and ended the term with the usual Christmas party and sharingof oburoni-wawu (used clothing). The teachers are happy that Rick arrived back in

Ghana December 26 to prepare for second term.Rick himself had gall bladder surgery in the summer. Then the doctor recommendedthat they not take Sarah, their littlest one, back to Ghana. She is a slow developerand had come home malnourished from frequent diarrhea. Coretha also caught hepatitishere. After much prayer and soul-search ing, they decided to take Sarah back whenshe had gained more weight and had learned to walk well. At this time, she has learnedto walk half way across a room so Coretha hopes to rejoin Rick with both girls byFebruary. epraise God fo r strengthening Sarah, and we ask Him for protect ion of

the family's health in Ghana. An annual retreat for church leaders (of the Christian churches) was held at the collegein August. Eighty pas to rs , e ld er s, deacons, and deaconnesses attended. What a thrillthat was, especially when compared with last year 's attendance of fo urAbeka's new preacher wrote that the you th had sponso red their own crusade and severalsouls were added to th e c hu rc h. They were also alert to counsel and teach conve rt s a tfilm showings held by an interdenominational mission Altogether within a short time of mydeparture, 56 had been added to the church. At l as t repor t, the youth were also faithfullyhelping in t he Saturday calling program. The church has added two new deacons and a

new deaconess . T h e deaconess sel ls foodstuf f s in the market . O ne deacon is an e lec t r ic ianwith his own business . He has also s tar ted to ra ise chickens on a commercial basis . Theother deacon is one of the youth leaders. He just go t a job teaching school and alsotutors chi ld ren in the evenings to e ar n e xtra money. I find i t encouraging that the churchactually turned down two women suggested as deaconesses . In judging them unsuitable, they were thinking, and not j us t r ubber -s tamping the committee.Ghana has restored full-time e le ct ric it y. Chr is tia n Adjei s aid Abeka may not be able totell the difference because of their frequent blackouts, but the dam level has increased sothat the every-other-day rationing is not now necessary,Jeff Hbstetter has had unusual difficulties with a case of hepatitis. There may even beliver damage, so the latest word from his father is that they will be coming home January 14for early furlough. They are so eager t o con tinue their work up in Sunyani , so p ra y th at

their hea lt h and fi nanc es will improve, by thei r re turn in 1985.Baby Jeremiah is also having problems with motor skil ls . At one year he can still not

s it alone. He also may have hear ing problems. There is a possibi l i ty tha t Couches mayhave to br ing him home for extensive tes ts during thei r Easter break . Pray for them, too.G o o d f in a nc ia l n e w s i s th a t G h a n a h a s d e v a l u e d t h e c e di to 50 fo r o ne d ol la r. O n t h i sside of the Atlantic, we h av e b ee n able to put aside 5,000 in an education fund for Christ ianAdjei. He has some graduate work from CBS, but has not yet completed his degree. InJanuary, we will begin to set aside 1,000 a month toward t he pur chas e of a new t ruck whenI return to Ghana in July , 1986. Unfortunately, my old t ruck has not sold yet . Withrecent devaluations, there i sn ' t enough money in the system yet . Keep praying about that .The money from its sale will go toward completion of our ou tdoor chapel . I t is b ein g usedregularly for c la ss es a s well as for th e chu rch, and its completion would be a big help.Thank you for your interest , support and love. Your le t ters are a big plus factor inmy being able to function well as a middle-aged graduate student . I'm looking forward somuch to Sep tember o f this year when I c an beg in visiting you in the churches.

    Dear F ri en d s i n Ch r i s t

After finishing my year 's schooling at Florida State Universi ty, I am in T enn essee asI write this . I wUl spend a week or two in Pennsylvania with my parents and with friendsand be back in Orlando, Florida in time to begin speak ing on September 8 at First ChristianChurch . My new address will be 4203 Parkside Drive, Orlando, 32806. I will be living withPat Metz^-4h wofl V whe-keeps-the-beoks-stateside^or-Afriea-Mission- EvangelisfflT^uri ncorpora ted body.I am t hankful t o the Lord that I have completed th e ta sk that seemed so very difficult

only a year ago. Our in house graduation, p lanned and p roduced by t he s tuden ts themselves, took p lac e on August 9. Our actual degrees (M.S. in L ib ra ry Science) will comein the mail from the universi ty . My second semester went well pushed along by steadywork. I spent spring break working on income tax and on research papers. For thatreason I was able to finish al l the work on time, and it was del ight fu l no t to have any finalexams. Eight weeks of summer school were not quite so high pressured except at the veryend. What a relief when th e la st paper was turned in The Ghana book project is still notcomplete, but I did enough to satisfy the academic requirements, and I wiU continue to workon it this coming year.I did not, after all, visit Pennsylvania and Ohio dur ing the May break before summerschool. With the work to be done on the book project, I decided to stay in Tallahasseemost of the time. I enjoyed a ten day v isit in Tennessee and took part in V.B.S. in Athens,Georgia and in Tallahassee at Capital City Church. It was a blessing to get to know peoplewith whom I usually only spend one evening every four yearsIt has been a long time s ince you heard from me so we will have to back up quite awhile to catch up on developments. My truck in Ghana was sold in January for theequivalent of just under $9,000.00. That money was immediately put to work in helping tocomplete the chapel. The college had to pay 1600.00 duty on the roofing sheets from Sears. That is the first time in a long time we have had to pay duty. The chapel extensions wereroofed in time for graduation.Coretha Fulton left the Sta tes in February with her two daughters to rejoin her husbandLittle Sarah was walking very will. Deb Couch had brought her two children home on Feb

ruary 10 for a complete ser ies of examinations and counseling for son Jeremiah. These testscontinued into April and David joined his family on March 16 during the vacation betweensecond and third term at the college. Jeremiah has no hearing in his left ear but has onlya mild hearing loss in his right ear. He has been fitted with a hearing aid and has showngood progress in alertness , speech and physical act ivity already. He can walk across theroom holding on the the furniture. The family returned t o Ghana April 29 but will have tosolve the problem of how to change Jeremiah's earpiece every six months.Jeff and Sherrie Hostetter came home January 14 for early fur lough because of healthproblems but have since been given a clean bill of health. They are very busy preparingfor an April return to Ghana. Their third child Jeremiah Scott was born July 17.Enoch Nyador is r eady to begin his third and final year at Emmanuel School of Religion.

He is in the Honors Program. His wife Lydia was-able to come from Russia fo r a summerv i s i tNow fo r Ghana news: th e college held a festive graduation fo r twelve students th e middleof July. Three of them were degree recipients . The college has engaged a public relationsofficer who will at tempt to raise support from local churches. Local support will be usedto pay the PRO and a part time teacher, a fine lady who just graduated. This will enablethe faculty to teach diploma students and degree students separately. This separation isa requirement for accreditation. The raising of local support is an important step inGhanaianizing th e college.Several friends wrote about the good Christmas church convention last year. ChristianAdjei said th at th ere are now about 40 churches in the brotherhood--a sizeable increase. At Eastertime, regional conventions were held so that transportation costs could be keptdown. A youth convention was held at the college in August with 200 in attendence. This

was a new under taking. The Abeka Church is still growing. More than 60 people have been bapt ized in to theLord since I lef t . Someone wrote tha t sometimes you have to hun t for a seat when youcome t o worsh ip . The youth, most of whom are between 18 and 25, are serving an important role in calling on members and prospects . One of them wrote, I. . . thought th is isgoing to be a one month job, but going on and on, we find t ha t th er e is great joy in i t .One graduate, a preacher, wrote that the Roman Catholic chu rc h h ad t r ied to drivehim off the land the chief had given t he Chr is ti an Chu rch to b uild a place of worship.By God's grace, the Cathol ics were unsuccessful and the chu rch has laid the foundation, and laid one row o f b lo ck s. Now they must wait until they have more money.Kwame Afakule, college watchman, deacon, and r ising sophomore at the college, hasbrought a third brother to stay with h im . This year Kwame d rove hal f time and watchedhalf time , a long with his studies. He is rea l ly pleased with what he is learning. Justrecently, one of his brothers began showing s ig ns o f mental trouble. He h as a sk ed forprayer for Kwaku. Kwame already bears a heavy load of responsibility and this makes it

    h e a v i e r .

My study at FSU was part of the college p lan to encourage every teacher to get aMaster' s Degree for accredi ta tion. The next phase of that goal will be carried out nextyear, the Lord willing. We have been able to put 11,000.00 into CD's so tha t o ur principal,Christian Adjei, can come back to t he S ta tes again next May and finish his degree at CBS.1 will be in Florida from September t hr ou gh F eb ru ar y, r ea dy and eager to speak tocongregations, women s groups, Sunday School classes. Just let me hear from you. DuringMarch through May 1986 I will travel and speak in places outside Florida. If you are nota regular supporting church already, I need to hear from y ou if you want to be included.Thank you for your prayers and support during th is past year . The extended furloughis more than half over, and I'm looking f orwa rd to my return to service in Ghana.

Dear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d sIt s been a busy happy three months. My main work has been speaking in the churchesin Flor ida reporting on the last four years and securing one-time and continuingsupport in preparation for the next three years. To see old friends in the Lord andto make new ones is a blessing. Sometimes other missionaries are at the same churchand I enjoy talking to them too. During th e week I work in my own office cornerhere a t F i r s t Christian, my l iv in g li nk church.During these fall months I have also taken one graduate class in theology by extension from Cincinnati Christian Seminary a t Kissimmee. Twenty preachers in the classa n d m e .At th e end of September I thoroughly enjoyed the National Missionary/Florida ChristianConvention here in Orlando and led a workshop for singles who are or want to be missionaries. Jeff and Sherrie Hostetter, Sherrie s parents, t h e i r forwarding agents, andCarl Bridges who is now ME president, were all at the convention as well as loadso f f r i e n d s from many p l a c e s .Our youth minister broke his a nk le wh ile skateboarding on Thanksgiving Day so I wentto the two day Florida Youth Convention as one of two substitute sponsors. Thespeaker and an actor/mime were e x c e lle n t.Now I am looking forward to riding th e train to Pennsylvania fo r Christmas but I l lbe back in F l or i da by th e New Year. The news from th e work in Ghana is generally very good. The college has a recordnumber of students this fall 41). Three women are staying in my house and cookingon the carport. When doors ar e obtained fo r th e new chapel, other classroom andliving areas will be reassigned to make room fo r th e women on campus. There seems tobe a very good sp ir it of unity and cooperation in th e student body. They have a choiran d are forming a drama group a l s o .

The new woman teacher is teaching halftime and working in the library cataloging bookshalftime. A small book fe e is being charged t he s tu de nt s and a bookstore has beenestablished where i t is po ss ib le f or them to buy some of the books which are no t givento them free. Diploma students are being taught separately from degree students, sot h a t each group can meet i t s capaci t y.The college has hired a former student as Administrative A ss is tan t to help with superv i si o n o f maintenance an d b u si n e ss. So f a r he ha s worked o u t very w e ll.Several men took a t ri p to northern Ghana in August to investigate some church work.A former s tu d e n t ha s s t a r t e d f our Ch r is tia n c hur c he s , an d a former Abeka church memberhas st art ed two. The l a t t e r is so shy and ignorant in many ways, bu t he is very determined to do something fo r the Lord. There were two conferences among the churches in August. One was f or l ea de rs hi ptraining and attendance was about 50. Another was a first-time Youth Convention witha bout 20 0 in a t t e nda nc e . Both conferences were held on th e c o l l e g e campus. The Abeka church has begun a prison ministry. The women s fellowship has shown somegrowth. In between their B ible s tud y meetings, they enjoyed exchanging cookingd e m o n s t r a t i o n s between th e G ha na ia ns a nd Americans.
