FE RU RY 2003 CONTRIBUTORS LETTERDear Friends in Christ,

L I R RY INVENTORY COMPLETEDDuringthe Christmasvacation, four students, another teacher and I took inventoryof the library. It took us fourand a half days and revealed many, many errors, omissions and missing records as well as missing books.Correctingthose problems exceptthe missing books) fully occupiedme during the weeks I had no computertouse. The old library typewriter had just been serviced and it served well. There are still catalog cards to berefiled, but I am ready to resume processing new books on the new library computer.

FUND RAISER HIREDOn December 1st, Mr. Yaw Boamah began work as college fund-raiser. It has long been recognized thatsubstantial support must be raised locally to enable the college to meet the need for increased staffand otherlogisticalsupport. Mr. Boamah is a flilltime employee and has been assigned his own office and computer.Since he has worked successfully in this position for another Christian organization, the BoardofDirectorshave faith that he will do well.

    SCHOL RSHIP SUPERVISION

At the end of first term, our scholarshipmoney was able to help five students finish payingtheir fees so theycould take their exams. This periodalso revealed some who were committed and hard-working, but neededregular help. Three missionaries, with input from Ghanaiancolleagues, are making the decisions as to whoshould receive help. Beginningwith the January term twenty-four students are receivingeither full scholarshipsor fees-only scholarships. The moneycomes from many different sources. It is a responsibility undertakenon faith as we never know exactlyhow much money will come. It is my job to liason between the mission andthe local treasurerand to keep contributors of scholarshipmoneyadvised as to the progressof those they help.PR YER POWERThank Godfor: safe travelto distant churches duringChristmas vacationand for dailysafe travel between thetwo campuses for those who live on the new one; Brian Jennings return to Ghana and resumption ofhis

teaching; funds available for scholarships and continuing construction; hiringofa fimd-raiser; library progress;good health.Petition God for: physical, emotional and spiritual strengthfor the preparationfor movingthe collegestudents, library and offices)to the new campus in July and August;flmds to acquire necessary newfurnishings for the library, classroomsand dormitories; God s guidancefor my personalprepration for furloughand what c omes after. With gratitude to God and you,

    PLANS TO RETURN TO GHANA

It s good to beginwith the most startling news. After seeinghow myneglecthad piled up thelibrarywork, and after experiencingsome relieffrom stress by retiring from teaching, I prayed abouta possible return to Ghana for two years to give themission a better return on the investment they madein my library degree. My family in the U.S., myadopted family here in Ghana, tiie othermissionaries, the college administration, and theelders of first Christian Church Orlando, Florida,my living link church, have all agreed to the plan. The Orlando church will continue my living linksupport, and my prayer is that supporting churchesand individuals will continue to uphold theexpanding work ofAfrican Mission Evangelism.

This school year closes on July 18. We then havethree weeks to move the library and offices andclassroomfurnishings to the new campus and geteverything set up for the opening of the new schoolyear on August 11 I will stay for one more monthto be sure the library is running smoothly and to getmy house in order, then leave for the U. S. early inthe second week ofSeptember for fiirlough. Exactdates and plane reservations are not set, but I shouldbe in Orlando, Florida by the beginning ofOctober.Thatwill be my basefor six months duringwhich Iwill be available for reporting on the work beingdone illGhana through African Mission Evangelismand Ghana Christian College. In April and May20041 will travel to points north ofFlorida with areturn to Ghana possibly in June 2004. These plansare all subject to the will of God.

The mission has purchased a new desktopcomputer that will be part of the library office, but Iam using it at home until I leave for fiirlough.Installing all the software has taken time, and thelibraryprogramis not workingverysmoothlyat thismoment, but we trust that hitch will be straightenedout and I will get back to the new books. For thenew library, we are praying for fimds for a securitysystem to prevent loss of books.

    FUND RAISER A N D B U SI NE S S M A N A G E R E TO ST FF

Since the college is growing faster than missionaryfimds and student fees can support, it becameimperative to hire someone whose fiilltime work isfimd-raising locally. Mr. Yaw Boamah, who hassuccessfiil experience doing that in anotherChristian organization in Ghana, began work onDecember 1, 2002. He has his own office equippedwith a computer and printer and is layinggroundwork for building local support base. He is __married an d has tw o children.

Although our Treasurer, John Dadzie, has servedwell in that role and in doing many other kinds ofbusiness for the college, the growing complexity ofthe work required us to look for someone withadvanced training to serve as Business Manager. We also prayed for a dedicated Christian who waswilling to work for a more modest salary than manybusinesses and even non-profit organizations arecurrently paying in Ghana. The Administrationbelieves they have found such a man, and if heaccepts the contract offered him, he will begin workMay 1. John continues to serve as Treasurer.

Ithasbeen a long time since I said anything about thenew campus. The classrooms have ceilings, lightsfixtures and fans. Thebuilding alsohasironrailings around allthe verandahs and steps, and it a clockinthetower. Itis very handsome. The exterior ofthe library/administration building (the 2/3 ofitthatwearestartingwith)hasbeenfinished witha stonefacing, complete withtwopillarsin thefi:ont The interior terrazzofloors are bemg polished. Since wehaven t enough money tobuild a dormitory, some ofthebig classroomswill beused as temporary dormitory rooms. The August short term coursewill betaking place onthe oldcampus at thesametimethe newsemester begins atthenewcampus. Thatsituation necessitates theconstruction ofnew beds and classroom furniture. The steel bender/welder and carpenters are working hard onthisproject. The area allaround these two buildings (classroom andlibrary/administration) hasbeen cleared ofbrush and graded. Some grass has been planted. The area now resembles a campus. Some picnic-style tableshave been built for the futureeatingarea.

    G ET T H E TEXTBOOKS HERE

In late February, in order to relieve an overloaded office manager, I volunteered to take on the task ofordering textbooksfor third term and for first semester of the new school year (August). We were leftwith a very short time frame foroverseas service. With the expert help ofa bookshop manager in London, we were able to get some sentto Dallas TX intime for Ron Rife to pack them in a shipping container which is to arrive the end ofMay. Some have come byAir Mail, some by DHL, a few by surface mail from England. We have also ordered special library books to help with the newMaster s program. We are still ordering and will make full use ofwilling couriers - visitors who are coming for shortvisits in June, July, and August and can bring a suitcase fiill ofbooks as their second free piece of luggage It s a funchallenge.

FLORID CHRISTI N COLLEGE TE M

For the past ten days a group of three students and one professor from Florida Christian College inOrlando have beenhere in Ghana. They brought two army duffle bags and one mediumsuitcase filledwith books, both used and new. Onthree mornings they helped me with some of the processing of those books and others. Enoch Nyador took them on a fourday trip up north to visit several Ghanaianmissionariesand the churches. Today they are working at the new campus, maybe planting grass. Having them around with their quick minds and quick actions shows me how much I ve sloweddown at 65

MiscellaneousMyauplane ticket for September 11 fromAccra to Philadelphia is in my possession.. .The new businessmanager, because of a delay in notifying his present employers, cannot join us until June 1, but is meeting with us to work on nextyear s budget...Entrance exams in April yielded fewer applicants than usual because they were three months earlier thanusual and because we were slow in the distribution of the new prospectuses.

    PR YER P OWER

Praise God for: textbooks and library books that are arriving weekly; eight thousand dollars raised so far for the cafeteria;good Easter convention; Rifes safe return to Ghana; good health for most ofus; God s sustaining grace; mostly goodexperiences by the students during two weeks of practicals ; peace in Ghana in the midst ofunrest in many places inWest Africa.Petition God for: improved health for our Principal, Christian Adjei; more funds to dig a well and complete otherpreparations for moving day; more scholarship frindsto help needy students pay increased fees next year (August); safetravel and good response to fund-raising efforts in the U.S. by David Kalb until mid-July.Thank you for your prayers and very faithful support ofGhana Christian College through African Mission Evangelism. In the service of the King,Dorothy Eunson

Dear Friends in Christ,GRADUATION INAUGURATION DAY

    AUGUST 9

At long last, the college itselfstudents, classrooms, and library^will be moved to the newcampus. On Saturday, August 9, a grand combinedgraduation ceremony and ribbon-cutting andinauguration of the new campus will be held on site.About a dozen special visitors are coming from theU. S. including Jerry Gibson and his wife. Mr.Gibson founded the college in 1966. Cara SnyderofDallas Christian College will be here. Carareplaced me here in Ghana during two ofmyfurloughs. Vaughn Williams, an elder ofFirstChristian Church Orlando and member of theAfrica Mission Evangelism board of directors, willbe my special guest. Dick and Nancy Hostetter arecoming for a prolonged visit. The Hostetters servedwith the college for seven years from the beginning.Their daughter Heather is married to P. C. Cline, our building consultant in charge of the new campusconstruction. Pressure is high to finish the schoolyear at the old campus, get everything moved to thenew campus, and complete construction andfinishing touches there.

    CAFETERIA UNDER CONSTRUCT ION

An April Contributors letter informed many of youthat there had to be a structure on campus in whichthe students could eat and do some cooking if theywished. The cost would be about 25 000 and wedid not have the funds a t t ha t time . P ra is e God tha tduring his recent short furlough, David Kalb wasused by the Lord to raise that money. Thefoundation and floor have been poured and the restwill go up quickly. The building may not befinished in detail, but, in addition to being a dininghall, it will serve as a meeting place for largegroups. On August 8, the first AlumniHomecoming Day will be held there. It may alsohave to serve as a temporary chapel once the new

Mrs. Aflia Wiafe has served as an adjunct Englishteacher for several years. As ofAugust 1, she willbe employed fulltime as librarian and Englishteacher. Since we lack housing on the new campus, both of these employees must be provided off-campus housing.Mr. Isaac Dodoo has been employed as an officeassistant. He does a lot of computer work andgeneral office tasks for both the fund-raiser, Mr.Boamah, and the general office.

The college is changing from a trimester system to asemester system. This year that leaves a very shorttime between the old year and the new. Finalexams here are over by July 18. In addition to theteachers marking of exams, an external examinerhas to go over samples of the papers. This is therequirement for accredited schools. That is whygraduation has been delayed till August 9. The newschool year begins August 11A second big change is the beginning of a Master sprogram. It will be a Master s degree in ChristianLeadership. The pilot program will include aboutten students. All of these will be our own graduateswho have akeady applied. Some local adjunctprofessors, a fewof our own staff who are qualified, and visiting lecturers from the Seminary of theNations will be the teachers. Seminary of theNations is a U. S. based Christian Church missionwhich sends U. S. Bible college professors on shortterm assignments to foreign and overseasBiblecolleges to enrich their programs. Dr. DennisGaertner from Johnson, Dr. Steve Hooks fromAtlanta, and Dr. Jon Weatherly from Cincinnatihavealreadyvisitedus for Spiritual Emphasis Weekfor three years.

At the regional convention I noticed that no one waspresent from one of the Tema churches. At thesame time, tw o of their former members w ho n owlive in Ac c ra a nd ar e in Abeka Christian Churchwere present and very active. The first month afterth e convention, Kwame an d I and those tw o visitedthe church in Tema to encourage them. The churchwas especially happy to see their former members.A week or so later, we met the pastor at a fimeraland he told us how very encouraging the visit was.In June, our team visited-aa,Bwe tillage abouttwo-hours away. We worshippedwith them and thenloaded the truck with 80 sleeping mats that we hadordered earlier in preparation for the July leadershipretreat. It s a good thing we covered it very wellwith a heavy tarp because most of the trip home wedrove through heavy rain. Kwamewas very tiredwhen we got home.

    TBDEMOVE

With the help ofthe Lord, we did it The schoolhas actually moved, the campus inaugurated, andthe new school year and new Master's programbegun. HalleluiahMoving from the old campus to the new one wasstrenuous for everyone. Seeing that our more than5500 books were moved was my mainresponsibility. A visit to a local box factory topurchase 91 boxes to supplementthe few we hadalready collected saved the day. A visiting youthgroup fifom the U. S. did most of the packingaccording to a careful plan on July 21, and theboxes were ferried to the new campusvia pickuptrucks. The new librarian and some students beganthe unpackingon the other end and the visitingyouth assisted on the second day. Many more hourswere spent on subsequent days to get everything inperfect order.Major itemsoffurniture, equipment, andmanyboxes ofdocumentswere movedby a large truck onJuly 28. Much of this was first placed inside thenew library till it could be moved to moreappropriate places. Since the campus is stillunfinished, we are very short of indoor storagespace. Most of the textbooks, student councilbelongings, and office documents have to be storedin the library storeroom. The August short termcourse still took place on the old campus, so sometables, chairs and the old bedswere left behind.

    NEW SCHOOL YE R

Three days later on August 12, classes began forboth undergraduate and graduate classes. At thevery beginning there were no proper desks, butsome folding chairs and some picnic tables destinedfo r th e cafeteria served until some desks could bemade. At least the classroomsare fi esh clean and beautifully painted, and thestudents can go to the library anytime they have afree period since it no longer doubles as aclassroom.Thehiring ofa fulltime library clerk also makes thelibrary more accessible. The cafeteria was ready for use by the end ofSeptember, giving students a place to relax, eat, andcook if they so choose. Vendors brought cookedfood to sell in a temporary shelter and will continueto sell in the new structure.A new well was dug just before school began.Although the pump and storage tank have yet to beinstalled, the well is capable ofproducing morewater than the previous three wells combined. Dear Friends in Christ,Furlough ActivityIt has been a pleasure to begin the process of reporting to supporting churches and renewingfriendships within the congregations. So far I have visited eight congregations and four smaller groupswithin the churches. The making ofnew friends is also important to the continuing partnershipbetween the churches and the mission. My living link church ofFirst Christian Church ofOrlandocompleted the 40 Days of Purpose program in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Being in a smallgroup was very helpfiil in getting to Imowsix of the new members and was spiritually refreshing.

Furlough is the time many ofus have physical exams and eye and dental exams. Most of the medicalstuffhas now been taken care of, and I have new eyeglasses. Only visits to the dentist remain. I am ingood shape physically except for osteoporosisa. family trait and I am on medication for that.National Missionary ConventionMany hours ofwork and somehelp from the church secretary produced a new display board and anup-to-date brochure in time for the National Missionary Convention m Cincinnati in later November. It was a wonderful convention with record-breaking attendances, exhibits, and commitments tomissionary service since the last convention. My part was to serve on a panel considering The Prosand Cons ofEducating National Church Leaders in the U. S. Our own college in Ghana is areflection ofour philosophy that it is better to educate them in their own country or region except for aselect few who would benefit fix m higher degrees. Actually, all of the panel members were prettymuch in agreement. Mrs. Barbara Barkes, our Gray, TN forwarding agent, was with me at the

    convention most the t ime.

News From GhanaThe September conference to collect ideas and suggestions from many organizations for the proposedSchool ofCommunityDevelopment was attended by about 50 enthusiastic participants. After that, theAcademic Affairs Committee worked long and hard to come up with names ofcourses to be included. Now they are woridng on course descriptions. The regular programs will have completed first semester before Christmas. One week there werepower outages every day except Saturday and one day the outage lasted ten hours.

Praver powerPraise God for: safe travel to Florida and aroimd the state; an excellent Missionary Convention; asuccessful semester in the college in Ghana; good health reports; the gift of a new laptop computer.Petition God for: continued safety in travel; funds for new campus construction; safe flights to andfrom Pennsylvania for Christmas; a productive visit in December to the college by Dr. Mike Flannery,a librarian at the University ofAlabama. In Christ's love, Dorothy Eunson at GCC/S
