    January 1973

Christmasj 1972 was an unusual day. Ron Rife ChristianAdjei and I left about 10:30 for Tamatoku a village about 60 milesfrom Accra. The Churches of Jesus were holding a convention inconjunction with the Christian Church pastored by a G. C. C. alumnusin t ha t v illage . Tvro students are local preachers for Churr es ofJesus. These holiday conventions are common among the so-c Ledspiritual churches. This one had begun on the 23rd; Kent lylorhad gone and taught a class to the elders and leaders on Stew rd-ship on the 2ijth. The strong teaching as t he Ghanaians termedi t was we ll r ec ei ved.

We arrived before noon and the morning service was goin.^strong. iJe were seated on chairs behind the platform of plank.under the canvas roof which gave sturdier shade than the palmbranches over the main section. Samuel Djumah, the host pastorgave each of us an orange to refresh us from the journey. We atei t then and there and threw the peelings and seeds cn the sand undero u r ch irs

Much of this iibrning service was unintelligible because ofthe language problem. I knew scarcely any of their songs either.Sometimes their periods of prayer were begun by everyone praying atonceout loud; then a leader prayed. During the germon, a youngwoman with a switch walked around from time to time speaking inthe ear of those who appeared to be sleeping or tapping them on

All activities were accompanied by the soft chugging of agenerator diesel-powered) about ^0 yards in back of us. In m nyvi l lages there i s no e lec t r i c i ty so the congregations of theChurches of Jesus had gone together to buy t h i s one fo r aboutv375 I t powered the amplifiers lent by the college, onefluorescent bulb over the speakers platform and scattered white, yellow, red and blue bulbs over the cent ral c pen space. At the close of the morning service about 2;00 p.m.) onewoman convert came to give her l i fe to the Lord. A ju;)u bracele tand ring x^orn to protect- her from ev i l sp i r i t s were removed fromh e r One of our students pointed out to; us. an old man. out of whomdemons had been driven by much prayer the previous evening. I tseems he had been.near dea th , and had he died, would have> brought gre t disgr ce on the church h d sked th t ll hisju ju paraphanalia , of which he had plenty, bs burned.

After the .d ismissal of tha t genera l service , the elders.^coimg men, and a few women-stayed for the clas,a--i^ught by -SgjiTTe^^ssisted by Christian, on Church Government. This is a veryfoucfiy subject because the idea of central ized government i sdeeply enteee=he^= 0 ^^^ their traditional society and missionchurches^Tv^ck Hostgt^;^ has had frequent contacts with theseChurches of Jesus and has planted many, many seeds in the r igh td i rec t ion On t ha t Christmas afternoon, there were one or tvjoelders from the headquarters ; congregation that were antagonisticand tr ied to argue, but I thj.nk basically the local elders andpastors understood and v-ere in agreement. The atmosphere was al i t t le tense, and Ron didn t get much actual teaching done, butour students were th r i l led wj.th the progress tha t was made. Already, the local churches- administer their own financ-es and conduct most of t he i r ovm a f fa i r s and ye t. coopera te in many ways.

Another'prevalentpractice here i s to forbid communion to men vjho have more than onewife, even though they already had them when they became Christ ians.I t i s t ied up with the popular misconception here that i f one has s inned' during the week, he should abstain from the Lord's Supper Couldany of us commune with our Lord i f t h a t were His command?
