Loveyanswered 6 years agoHydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil. Terrestrial

plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such

as perlite, gravel or mineral wool. A variety of techniques exist.

Plant physiology researchers discovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential mineral

nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but

the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water,

plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant'swater supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will

grow with hydroponics, but some will do better than others. It is also very easy to do; the activity is

often undertaken by very young children with such plants as watercress. Hydroponics is also a

standard technique in biology research and teaching and a popular hobby.

    [edit] History

The hydro (water) and ponos (labour). Many people use the term hydroponics to describe any

methods of growing that does not use soil (although some scientists dispute this definition) and in that

sense ancient peoples such as the Babylonians and Aztecs used hydroponics, as nutrients wereobtained from other sources. The mineral nutrient solutions used today for hydroponics were not

    developed until the 1800s.

The earliest published work on growing terrestrial plants without soil was the 1627 book, Sylva

Sylvarum by Sir Francis Bacon, although he died in 1626. Water culture became a popular research

technique after that. In 1699, John Woodward published his water culture experiments with spearmint.

He found that plants in less-pure water sources grew better than plants in distilled water. Mineral

nutrient solutions for soilless culture of plants were first perfected in the 1860s by the German

botanists, Julius von Sachs and Wilhelm Knop. Growth of terrestrial plants without soil in mineral

nutrient solutions was called solution culture. It quickly became a standard research and teaching

technique and is still widely used today. Solution culture is now considered a type of hydroponicswhere there is no inert medium.

In 1929, Professor William Frederick Gericke of the University of California at Berkeley began publicly

promoting that solution culture be used for agricultural crop production. He first termed it aquiculture

but later found that aquaculture was already applied to culture of aquatic organisms. Gericke created

a sensation by growing tomato and other plants to a remarkable size in his backyard in mineral

nutrient solutions rather than soil. By analogy with the ancient Greek term for agriculture, geoponics,

the science of cultivating the earth, Gericke introduced the term hydroponics in 1937 (although he

asserts that the term was suggested by Dr. W. A. Setchell, of the University of California) for the

culture of plants in water (from the Greek hydros, water, and ponos, labor).

Reports of Gericke's work and his claims that hydroponics would revolutionize plant agricultureprompted a huge number of requests for further information. Gericke refused to reveal his secrets

claiming he had done the work at home on his own time. This refusal eventually resulted in his leaving

the University of California. In 1940, he wrote the book, Complete Guide to Soilless Gardening.

Two other plant nutritionists at the University of California were asked to research Gericke's claims.

Dennis R. Hoagland and Daniel I. Arnon wrote a classic 1938 agricultural bulletin, The Water Culture

Method for Growing Plants Without Soil, debunking the exaggerated claims made about hydroponics.

Hoagland and Arnon found that hydroponic crop yields were no better than crop yields with goodquality soils. Crop yields were ultimately limited by factors other than mineral nutrients, especially

light. This research, however, overlooked the fact that hydroponics has other advantages including

the fact that the roots of the plant have constant access to oxygen and that the plants have access to

as much or as little water as they need. This is important as one of the most common errors when

growing is over- and under- watering; and hydroponics prevents this from occurring as large amounts

of water can be made available to the plant and any water not used, drained away, recirculated, or

actively aerated, eliminating anoxic conditions which drown root systems in soil. In soil, a grower

needs to be very experienced to know exactly how much water to feed the plant. Too much and the

plant will not be able to access oxygen; too little and the plant will lose the ability to transport

nutrients, which are typically moved into the roots while in solution.

These two researchers developed several formulas for mineral nutrient solutions, known as Hoaglandsolutions. Modified Hoagland solutions are still used today.

One of the early successes of hydroponics occurred on Wake Island, a rocky atoll in the Pacific

Ocean used as a refueling stop for Pan American Airlines. Hydroponics was used there in the 1930s

to grow vegetables for the passengers. Hydroponics was a necessity on Wake Island because there

was no soil, and it was prohibitively expensive to airlift in fresh vegetables.

In the 1960s, Allen Cooper of England developed the Nutrient Film Technique. The Land Pavilion at

Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center opened in 1982 and prominently features a variety of hydroponic

techniques. In recent decades, NASA has done extensive hydroponic research for their Controlled

Ecological Life Support System or CELSS. Hydroponics intended to take place on Mars are using

LED lighting to grow in different color spectrums with much less heat.

    [edit] Origin

    [edit] Soilless culture

Gericke originally defined hydroponics as crop growth in mineral nutrient solutions, with no solid

medium for the roots. He objected in print to people who applied the term hydroponics to other types

of soilless culture such as sand culture and gravel culture. The distinction between hydroponics and

soilless culture of plants has often been blurred. Soilless culture is a broader term than hydroponics; it

only requires that no soils with clay or silt are used. Note that sand is a type of soil yet sand culture is

considered a type of soilless culture. Hydroponics is always soilless culture, but not all soilless culture

is hydroponics. Many types of soilless culture do not use the mineral nutrient solutions required forhydroponics.

Billions of container plants are produced annually, including fruit, shade and ornamental trees, shrubs,

forest seedlings, vegetable seedlings, bedding plants, herbaceous perennials and vines. Most

container plants are produced in soilless media, representing soilless culture. However, most are not

hydroponics because the soilless medium often provides some of the mineral nutrients via slow

release fertilizers, cation exchange and decomposition of the organic medium itself. Most soilless

media for container plants also contain organic materials such as peat or composted bark, which

provide some nitrogen to the plant. Greenhouse growth of plants in peat bags is often termed

hydroponics, but technically it is not because the medium provides some of the mineral nutrients.

Peat has a high cation exchange capacity and must be amended with limestone to raise the pH.

    [edit] Techniques

The two main types of hydroponics are solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture does not

use a solid medium for the roots, just the nutrient solution. The three main types of solution culture

are static solution culture, continuous flow solution culture and aeroponics. The medium culture

method has a solid medium for the roots and is named for the type of medium, e.g. sand culture,

gravel culture or rockwool culture. There are two main variations for each medium, subirrigation andtop irrigation. For all techniques, most hydroponic reservoirs are now built of plastic but other

materials have been used including concrete, glass, metal, vegetable solids and wood. The

containers should exclude light to prevent algae growth in the nutrient solution.

    [edit] Static solution culture

In static solution culture, plants are grown in containers of nutrient solution, such as glass Mason jars

(typically in-home applications), plastic buckets, tubs or tanks. The solution is usually gently aerated

but may be unaerated. If unaerated, the solution level is kept low enough that enough roots are above

the solution so they get adequate oxygen. A hole is cut in the lid of the reservoir for each plant. There

can be one to many plants per reservoir. Reservoir size can be increased as plant size increases. A

homemade fugifilm system can be constructed from plastic food containers or glass canning jars withaeration provided by an aquarium pump, aquarium airline tubing and aquarium valves. Clear

containers are covered with aluminum foil, butcher paper, black plastic or other material to exclude

light, thus helping to eliminate the formation of algea. The nutrient solution is either changed on a

schedule, such as once per week, or when the concentration drops below a certain level as

determined with an electrical conductivity meter. Whenever the solution is depleted below a certain

level, either water or fresh nutrient solution is added. A Mariotte's bottle can be used to automatically

maintain the solution level. In raft solution culture, plants are placed in a sheet of buoyant plastic thatis floated on the surface of the nutrient solution. That way, the solution level never drops below the

    roots.

[edit] Continuous flow solution cultureIn continuous flow solution culture the nutrient solution constantly flows past the roots. It is much

harder to automate than the static.

They learn methods to grow protein-rich fodder at a much faster rate

For increased productivity:Farmers having a look at the fodder-producing model using hydroponics at the KrishiVigyan Kendra in Namakkal on Sunday. -Photo: M.K. Ananth

About 100 proactive farmers were trained on using hydroponics to grow plants with water

as base, without soil to grow fodder. Fodder grown in about a month can be harvested in

seven days with much higher protein content through this technology, Head of the KrishiVigyan Kendra (KVK) Namakkal, Dr. B. Mohan told The Hindu.

    Technology

The programme was organised by the KVK and a Maharashtra-based private firm that ispromoting the technology. He said that this technology has been successfully put to use bythe University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu a farmer in

Chennai has implemented it to produce fodder for his goats.

Hydroponics retains 21 percent protein in fodder unlike protein loss (due to dissolving in

sunlight) when it is grown in the field. It takes more than eight months for a goat to reachfull weight but protein-rich fodder grown hydroponically helps goats reach the same weightin about four months. This is a boon for farmers who have very small space to reap big

    returns quicker, Dr. Mohan added.

P.B. Upase who heads the Sales and Marketing division of a firm that is promoting thistechnology said that a kilogram of seed can produce eight kilos of fodder is seven days using

this technology. He said that only about 250 sq. ft. is required to grow a tonne of fodderevery day, irrespective of changes in the climatic conditions.

The setup has seven racks one for each day. The track in the lowest level is taken to the

next on the following day to facilitate growth with the conditions that support it on that dayin that level. It has sprinklers to water the plants and maintain the temperature at 24 degree

Celsius, UV lights and machines to dispense carbon dioxide and ozone.

A kilogram of seed requires about 80 litres of water to grow in soil. But hydroponicsrequires only two to three litres in seven days. It is ideal for areas deprived of rainfall andvery poor groundwater sources. With a few modifications the machine could also be used tocultivate a few varieties of greens and vegetables for human consumption.

Handling the technology is also easier and cost effective compared to the traditional mode

of growing fodder. One labourer can harvest one tonne in two hours every day, and it can bedirectly used to feed cattle. This fodder can be used as 75 percent of the feed of goats and

cows to gain weight and to yield more milk that is thicker and of better quality, costefficiently, he noted.

Zonal Project Director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Dr. S. Prabhu Kumar,Head of the KVK in the University of Dharwad Dr. Jitendrakumar Jilli, Dr. Mohan and Mr.Upase addressed farmers and also clarified their queries.

Also it requires 18kg of seeds daily and 24 hrs of electric supply(4-5 units daily). Thus the cost of

fodder is in turn of money and energy. Its not profitable for small farmers.

    With regards,

    dr.Shaikh

we provide you the best osmanabadi goats at reasonable prices

I am sorry the information what u have mentioned is wrong, the fodder production system GF 120

which can produce 120kg green fodder per day is only 3.75 lac and which runs on Solar power and

your production cost will be at Rs.2.00 per kg ,I guess a small farmer who does not have 1 acre of

land to produce enough green fodder for there small diary farm of 6 milking cow unit should be

fine with this system, and if u look like other reason why i feel this system should be viable

because the dry food quantity consumption also reduces .Labor cost for cutting the green fodder

and maintenance is zeroed ,increase in milk production, clean and dust free, highly nutritious

green fodder which is been a dream for all cows in India ;)

Subsidy may available up to the 50 % of cost on Solar & wind power

20% subsidy is available from NHB

If i am looking at stall fed farm i feel this is the best way because i can have the 6 unit diary farm

    in almost 3000 squire feet.

600 squire feet cow shed with cooling system .

    bio gas unit (cost Rs.5000)

Vermi compost unit almost same price of Bio gas unit

Azolla unit 80squire feet each unit(6 units for 6 cows, produce almost 750 gms per day each units

    )

    Auto milking unit

store room for medicine and concentrate food.

I guess this should make a perfect small size diary farm which can produce 25000 litters of milkper year(15 litter per cow for 280 days per year *6)

24 commercial size bio gas cylinder per year

43000 KG vermi compost per year.

If i am wrong any where pls correct.

    Re: Hydroponic Fodder

Hydroponic Fodder is new concept for foder production especially in western countries. As far as my

openion ,i felt that we have enough land as well as enough sunlight than western countries. So our

focus should be on growing advance varieties of fodder varieties recommended by various

research institutes in different localities.See,we have perennial & seasonal fodder varieties

eg.Haybrid Napier- RBN-13 which now recommened nationally is perennial cereal fodder crop &

RLS-88 Lucerne is perennial leguminous fodder crop.So the aspect of fodder production throughsuitable cultivation system should be focused first than the costlier systems ,may be which are not

    Dear All,

Can someone provide me the Actual Cost of cultivating Green Fodder as per present day labour

conditions. (Per Kg cost for each variety)

In one similar site it was mentioned that it is costing Cereal Fodder @ 1.30, Legume @ 0.60 &

Green Fodder at 3.00 per Kg to cultivate at a farm under a KVK.

Will the figures be more or less same even when cultivated by others. Say, in a case where the

farm is set up by an entrepreneur and gets the fodder cultivated and harvested with the help of

    labour & machinery.

A detailed information crop wise will be more helpful.

    Regards,

    Prakash.

Basic mistake which people make when considering cost is they take pricing as a whole. You needto understand that different feeds have different amounts of water content. When water isremoved, what is left is called dry matter (DM). The cow utilises DM and not water. So for exampleNapier - DM = 20% which means that when you feed 10 kg napier, cow is getting only 2 kg DM.Maize - DM = 35%.

Dry straw - DM = 90%.Concentrate ingredients - DM=90%.So costing should be done by comparing the items at the same level. Rs. 14/ kg for concentratesis for 90% DM whereas Rs. 3 or Rs. 4 for green fodder is for 20-30% DM. So if you wish to bring itto same level, then the green fodder will cost Rs. 9/kg.(3 times compensating for water). This isnot accounting protien. Concentrates give 20% protien with highest DM, whereas if you wish toachieve the same protien from green fodder, you will have to feed huge quantities.Napier - 5-7% CPMaize - 10-12% CP. So at least double quantity. Some costing information, not perfect.

Legume such as lucerne, subabul etc. - At least Rs. 6 / kg

    Grasses -

  • 5/26/2018 Hydrophonic Ferming

    21/74

Napier - I dont recommend at all due to major fault with this fodder. Causes calcium

defieciency, no guarantee on yield and Dm is very low( as explained below),

difficult to harvest. Anyone wonders why this is not used in USA, Europe or Australia but

rather only in third world countries?

Maize - Best fodder - Rs. 2 / kg. You may think yield is less, but my experience is yield on

DM basis is same or more than Napier. And protein is more. Silage from Maize - Rs. 3 / kg.

Dry fodder - Rs. 5 / kg is fair price.

I know its very technical, but dairy farming is very technical. you have to take it from scientific and

technical point of view if you have to save money and at the same time keep cows healthy.

Normal non-milking HF cow weighing around 500 kgs requires 10 kg DM which should be divided

between green fodder, dry fodder and concentrates. And then you have to add for milking ration.

My view is HF cow 500 kgs giving 20 lts milk needs 16 kg DM.

    So divide based on that.

    Example1. 1/3 green fodder - 5kg DM - 20 kgs maize fodder or 25 kg napier.

    2. 1/3 dry fodder - 5 kg DM - 6 kg dry fodder

    3. 1/3 concentrates - 5 kg DM - 6 kg concentrates, but make sure that the concentrates are rich in

protien by using more oil cakes or soya products since you need to compensate protein which is

not enough is the fodder and that too in limited ration.

If you plan to use dicod or fodder trees, then remember that fodder also has only 20% DM. Which

means costing should be based on that and max quantity that can be fed is only 4 kg /cow or you

    risk bloat cases.

You can alter the above proprtions to reduce costs by adjusting quantities of grass and

    concentrates.

All this is based on my last 2 years experience and referring books which sadly no one refers, not

even our wonderful veternerians. They should be responsible for spreading this kind ofinformation.

    Good luck with calculations.

available in the market are full of pesticides and are not even fresh, and all it contains is green

grass which has 90% of water which is just to fill the food need of cattle. But Fodder Machine is

the solution to the fodder problem, With the help of Fodder Machine we can now grow fresh green

    INTRODUCTION

In contrast to various manufacturers of fodder machine & their tall claims, Emmar Farm Technik has

indigenously designed a machine perfect for Indian climate working on a simple Common Sense

    Technology & which fits best

for Indian farmers needs & pocket. For these reasons Emaar has introduced a commercial cheap off-

the-shelf machine in various sizes suiting from farmers with 2-3 cattles to large dairys, Gaushalas with

several 1000s of cattles with them.

ABOUT EMAAR FARM TECHNIK (EFT) GAUCHAR MACHINE

Emaar Farm Technik (EFT) GauChar Machineis an affordable, efficient system, developed after years

of research, used for growing fodder/green feed in a soil free yet nutritional environment which is free

from insects, bacteria, fungal growth. Such an environment consequently results in high qual ity, protein

and fiber rich fodder. Hence, when such fodder is fed to the cattle, their milk productions goes up andbody weight increases.

Fodder produced from the unit is very cheap and replaces Concentrate feed (remains of Dal, wheat, oil

cake etc) by half the quantity.

BENEFITS OF EFT GREEN FODDER AS COMPARED TO OPEN FIELD FODDER/GRAINS

Sprouts Fodder have slightly higher dry matter than Grains. This is due to photosynthesis, nutrients

    and minerals from water.

Protein percentage in Sprouts on Dry matter basis is around 13% compared to 5% in Grains.

Sprouts absorbs minerals from water and create chelates (bound to amino acids), hence have

    higher minerals than Grains.

Sprouts uses dry matter and photosynthesis energy to add Vitamins, Folic Acids and Fibers. which

are virtually non present in Grains

Sprouting process creates enzymes which converts complex elements into simpler digestible

    elements:

    1. Carbohydrates => Sugar

    2. Protein => Amino Acids

    3. Fats => Fatty Acids

Sprouts have around 20-24% DRY MATTER compared to Open Field fodder with 10%

    DRYMATTER.

Sprouts Protein is high to around 14% on DRYMATTER basis, compared to Open Field fodder

protein to around 6-8% Much higher Fibers, Vitamin, Folic Acid in Sprouts compared to Open field

    fodder.

In case of Sprouts, Cattles eat complete plants with roots, stem and leaves compared to only leaves

    of Open field fodder.

Sprouts have higher Metabolic energy and nutrient contents compared to Open field fodder.

Open Field grown Green Fodder are cut several times in life cycle from top and leaves are fed to the

cattle. Compared to that, in case of Green Gau Char, the feed is made of thick 3-4 inches root zone,

stem and leaves, Feed is harvested when the Protein contents are highest. Cattle eat complete root,

stem and leaves and receives very high quantity of Fibre, Protein and Vitamins.

    HOW IT WORKS?

A selection of seeds, grains are spread onto the specialized growing trays and are watered at pre-

determined intervals with overhead sprays & sprinklers.

A set temperature & controlled environment is maintained inside the growing chamber automatically,

to ensure the best growth and highest nutritional value fodder possible.

Each day you simply slide the feed out of the trays, rinse the tray, reseed and push the newlyseeded tray into the other end of the system. The system holds enough trays to ensure you produce

your desired and nominated amount of feed every day as per the machine size.

Feed-quality maize germinates within 24 hours of seeding. The fodder grows in the same tray for 7-

days and is ready for harvest at a 3 to 4inch high grass mat. It takes seven days to grow from

seeding to feed out & later a per day production.

COST BENEFITS (3 TON MACHINE AS EXAMPLE)

environment consequently results in high quality, protein and fiber rich fodder. Hence, when such fodder

    is fed to the cattle,

their milk productions goes up and body weight increases.

Fodder produced from the unit is very cheap and replaces Concentrate feed (remains of Dal, wheat, oil

    cake etc )

    by half the quantity.

    WHO NEEDS IT?

Any cattle farmer, dairy owner, cooperative units, dairy associations, agricultural colleges (KVK),

Agricultural universities, research institutes, government bodies who are working for the welfare of

    animal husbandry,

companies associated with milk or milk related products (meat etc).

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MILK OR CATTLE INDUSTRY IN INDIA?

India has around 20 Crore cattle and there is a 35% shortage of green fodder, resulting into less

    production of milk

and milk related products like meat, eggs, cheese etc. Demand for milk will grow to 15 Cr. Liters by 2020

while the supply will not be able to grow until some innovation or new technologies are introduced to this.

25% of Indias Agricultural GDP is contributed by milk and milk related products

Average Indian spends 15% of his monthly grocery spends in Milk or related products.

This sector employs Indias 8% labor force.

    WHY THEY NEED FODDER UNIT?

Because it gives them Cost advantage (cheaper fodder), increase revenue (additional milk) and

healthy cattle (natural high nutrition food).

Fodder supply has become a challenge. Average milking cattle eats around 10-12** KG of

    concentrate

feed, around 8-10 KG of Green fodder and rest dry silage. But, if Green fodder is not available then

    rest

is all dry silage. Average cost of feeding a milking Cow is around 150-275 Rs/day**.

If farmer/dairy owner uses Fodder unit; half of concentrate feed can be reduced and replaced by

around10** KG of GauChar Fodder (Fodder from Emaar Production Unit). This will not only gives the cattle

the required protein (rather gives more than what they getting currently) but also reduces the Fodder

cost to around 30-50** Rs/ day.

Availability of Green fodder, which is essential for complete growth of the Cattle is not available

    round

the year and production is also reducing year by year. There is a huge deficit of 61% of Green

    fodder

** All figures are approximate and based on average calculation. However, these quantity and benefits

would be different in each cattle species.

    28/74

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF USING THIS?

Cost (as mentioned in the point above)

Easy availability: Does not require open field land. Available all 365 days. No transport cost

Less labor: only 1-2 people working for 4 hours a day can handle around 365 tonnes of Fodder

(compared to 20+ people required to do the same job in Open field)

Less Power: Power consumption is quite less (100 KG machine requires around 1 KW of connectedload or 9-12 units a day). Can also work on the UPS backup or solar power.

Less Water: Unit has recycling water system. Only around 1-2 Liters/KG water is required in a day.

Compared to 80 times more water in the open field.

High Protein, High Vitamin, High Fiber: 400% more protein than open field Green Fodder. 100%

more dry matter than Open field fodder.

Increased milk production: Milk production increases by around 15-25%** in around 1 Months time.

Increase Body weight: Body weight goes up by around 20-40** kg.

Increase semen count: Semen count goes up for male cattle significantly, producing better calves.

Protection from weather extremities: Since grown in the closed room, no effect of outside climate.

All necessary parameters are controlled for optimum growth.

Control from bacteria, fungus and pathogens: Since grown in controlled room, no insects etc canattack.

Care is taken for the maximum removal of the fungus.

** All figures are approximate and based on average calculation. However, these quantity and benefits

would be different in each cattle species.

IF THERE IS FREQUENT POWER OUTAGE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE UNIT?

Power is required to keep two kinds of instruments:

Required to be ON all the time: e.g. Fan, control panel etc. Required to be ON at interval: Water pump etc.

Overall power consumption is less than 1 KW for the 100 KG unit and will be less 2000 Watt for 500 KG

unit in a day. Items which require to be ON all the time takes very little power.

Overall, unit can run with 1KVA UPS setup for almost around 8-10 hours without power.

IF THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS VERY HOT OR VERY COLD WHAT HAPPENS?

Unit is fitted with temperature isolations through its resistive panels.(from all sides)

Water and air circulation systems are meant to keep the humidity high and temperature optimum

for the growth independent of the outside variations.

Unit also comes with the refrigeration and heater options for the extremely cold and hot climate areas

    IS THIS ORGANIC?

No pesticides, no fungicides, grown only in Water, Completely natural.

IS THERE A USE OF FUNGISIDES OR INSECTICIDES?

    NO

    29/74

    WHAT ARE THE NUTRIENT REQUIREMENT?

No nutrients are required while growing as seeds themselves are the nutrient power house and provide
