InHope Apr/May 2013 Welcome to Hope Church Ipswich!We believe that church is about God and His people. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to join us as we celebrate and share God’s love. Whether you are with us

for the first time or have been coming for a few weeks, it’s great to have you with us.

Who We Are. Hope Church is a group of ordinary people of every age and many

different backgrounds. Some have only recently started seeking Jesus while others have been Christians for many years. While still remaining

diverse we do have some significant things in common:

• We have found the person of Jesus to be the answer to our deepest needs.• We have become committed both to him and to one another.• We love the Bible and God’s presence and look to experience both whenever we meet on Sundays and in Small Groups during the week.

We are part of Newfrontiers, a growing family of 600 churches on five continents. We are also a member of the Evangelical Alliance UK.

Where We Are Going. We want to build a significant church that demonstrates and declares the certain hope that can be found in Jesus (hence the name), that loves one another and serves the Waterfront community and Ipswich. We are on a big adventure together where ‘every life counts’ and everyone is involved.

lives. Once a month we are continuing our

‘Grill-a-Christian’ interviews in which our

group get to grill one of our church members

to see how their lives are affected by being a Christian.

School Years 7-13 (Ages 11-18)

At various places in Ipswichon Tuesdays we meet to do topical bible studies, have fellowship time, play games and do social events. We have two groups into years 7-9 and years 10-13 to do more age appropriate studies and activities.

Newday is a youth event where thousands of 12-19 year olds (school year 7 upwards) camp together over 6 days. There is also a teaching stream for students and 20s and many adults come to look after the young people, or to serve the event.

Why should people go? (By Joel Virgo)“It’s a total riot! Everyone enjoys it. You get to know

new people and build strong, genuine friendships that will last and make a difference in your life. But really, I

want people to come to Newday to meet with God, the one who’s revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ. That’s

the story for thousands of people who have come to Newday so far. Some of them don’t even believe in

God, but by the end of the week they know he’s real and they want to get to know him more.”

What is a typical day at Newday?We have morning meetings with times of worship, celebration and teaching. They are always amazing! We have friends who preach and come from all over the world. After lunch people hang out. There are sports and activities on the campsite or people go off into the city on coaches to do social action projects. Evangelism is a highlight of Newday! Then in the evenings, all age groups meet together to worship God, hear from the bible, pray and we ask the Holy Spirit to come and people to meet with God, It’s always a superb occasion. After the meeting, there are cafes, people hang out with friends and eat food... before eventually going to bed.

Here’s what some of our young people said last year…“I prayed that I would be healed of my asthma. I went for a quick run with Charise and Annabel. I wasn’t out of breath!!!!” (Lydia Colbear)“God’s spoken to me in different ways... It’s been really encouraging and spot on. We’re excited to be beginning ‘The Story’ curriculum, engaging your children with the big story of God’s love for them!

‘The Story’ will take children on a journey through the Bible, chronologically, from beginning to end over 31 weeks. This is a fantastic tool to engage your children with God’s word, bringing key stories to life and showing how God is present and active in their own lives every day too.

Each week.your child will:

We recommend that you buy a copy of the relevant age-appropriate Bible for your child, to share with them at home. Please speak to a group leader if you’d like to do so.

We’ll be working with ‘The Story’ throughout 2013 and into early 2014.

Our new format means that during every session your child will have the opportunity to experience ‘The Story’ in a fun and interactive big way and then to explore what it means for their own life in a supportive small group, much like our adult Sunday morning and midweek structure.

Starting 7th April, all children will be in new groups. Each child will be part of a small group, with an assigned leader and helper. For part of the morning, small groups will join together for a big group time.

Children aged 4 years + will be meeting in MR1.Children aged 2 and 3 will be meeting in the downstairs classrooms.

Please take your child to the relevant room and sign them in to their new small group before leaving.

Parents of children aged 0 and 1 are welcome to use the parent and baby room near the lift at any time during the service.

Ever met anyone who sits in their room all the time, reads books and never comes out? They may be really smart but life is a bit like a crossword puzzle to them? Ever spoken to someone expecting their first child. They’ve read the books, watched the videos and heard all the advice on having babies. Yet afterwards they say “This baby raising thing… it’s just not going how we ever imagined!” Knowledge is listening, learning, and acquiring information. BUT knowledge only becomes wisdom when you DO IT. Wisdom can take time Wisdom is living. True wisdom comes from God. James writes: “Who is wise and understanding among you? It’s our burning ambition here at Hope that we get as many people as possible involved with our mission to Ipswich (Jerusalem), Suffolk and the East of England (Judea), reaching out to other cultures here in our own town (Samaria) and also to other nations (the ends of the earth.)

In the coming months there are a number of opportunities for you to connect with mission overseas - here are some dates and events to get you excited!

Fri 24th to Sun 26th May - Rotterdam Church Plant Join Maurice as he equips and encourages our churches in the Netherlands who are planning to plant into Rotterdam. You can either fly out via Amsterdam or drive out via Harwich-Hook of Holland. Hear first hand the developing plans for this amazing city, and join us in prayer and encouraging those on the ground.

Fri 7th to Sun 9th JuneStockholm Prayer Event Come and intercede for one of Europe’s great cities. Maurice will be flying out to join Phil Whittall and his team as they build up strength and faith for the next phase of their church plant. STANDING STRONGVISIONS ‘13SATURDAY 11TH MAYEXTENDED DAY 9.30AM - 3PMAT THE KING’S CENTRE, NORWICH, NR1 1PH

Visions is an excellent opportunity to spend time together worshipping God and hearing excellent teaching in Norwich (great shopping after!).

It promises to be an enjoyable and encouraging day for women of all ages! This year focuses on who we are before God and how he can use us to impact our communities and the people around us. We have two main speakers (Sonja Stonjanovic from Serbia – Vlada’s lovely wife - and Floss Watkins from Wymondham), seminars about different life stages; learning to be content in them and getting excited about what we can achieve there for God.

We’re keen to see women grow in their giftings, so we haven’t asked a ‘big’ name to lead. The seminars are by ‘ordinary’ women with stories to tell and a desire to see others ‘standing strong’.

If you happen to be at the Orwell Centre on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday during term time, you will notice that the average age of the 40 or so people present is very young. Welcome to TOTS!

Each session begins in the TOTS/Bubbles room; a large, kid-friendly room filled with puzzles, crafts, and similar pastimes. After 45 minutes, it is snack time. Kids and sit round tables sing “thank you Jesus” and are served cheese, fruit, and biscuits. Birthdays, new siblings and other special occasions are celebrated by all present. After the break, they move into the main downstairs meeting room for active play. Volunteers, including Mary Woods, Bryan and Sue Anstey, Paul Bloomfield, and Sandra Hart, serve the parents coffee and tea whilst the children play. The day is brought to a finish on a musical note – all sit in a circle and raise their voices in song!

TOTS sits under the umbrella of the ‘Heart for Ipswich’ ministries: reaching out to the Ipswich community as well as church members. It began in 2000 when 3 mums started up a coffee morning with a heart to provide a place for parents and children to come together. 6 years ago, Rachael Crawley felt the Lord leading her to take on the running of this growing group and in

2013, 5 groups and 100 families pass through our doors each week. Rachael has now decided to step down to focus on other areas of church life but God has a great plan for this ministry and has put people in place to take TOTS into a new and exciting season!

Just before Christmas, Angela Ryan felt very strongly that the Lord was telling her to offer to take over leading TOTS. At the same time, Elie Ramsay had been sharing her heart for families with Rachael both church members, and throughout Ipswich. This coincided with Rachel feeling that she was ready to step down and that God had new plans for her. A new partnership has therefore emerged, with Angela as TOTS leader, and Elie establishing a Community Pastor role.

“We believe that God has seen our hearts for our church and community here and placed us in roles that will challenge and fulfil us” Elie Ramsay.

The team want to continue to build on the fantastic foundation that has been laid over the past 12 years by growing in leadership and capacity and have set out their vision to guide this.

Half-term Holday Clubfebruary 2013

OFFICIAL REPORT by AGENT Y(otherwise known as Trevor Ford)

With Agent X (Hannah Macfarlane) believed to be captured

and in enemy hands, it is down to me, Agent Y, to write

this report on our most brilliant and successful mission

to date. I am myself currently ‘undercover’ while writing this and my blanket continually

gets in the way but nevertheless, I will press on!

It was great to welcome almost 40 Agents, aged 5-11, to our MISSION

RESCUE HOLIDAY CLUB, with a real mix of kids from Hope Church, other

churches (and other faiths), Kidsklub and the local community.

We soon realised they were up to the task ahead when they brilliantly created their spy

bases naming them: “BINOCULARS”, “TEAM 007”, “GOLDEN SPY ASSOCIATION” and

“JAZZY CASTLE”. Obviously, they were professionals!

Every day we had our SPY WORKOUT expertly led by Agent X and we praised our Great

God. We sang Super Hero lots, because JESUS IS OUR NO 1 HERO!

We watched the exciting adventures of Moses, as he heard God’s voice and led the

Israelites out of Egypt.The Agents then went back to base and learnt how to apply the lessons of Moses to

their lives. Our Agents then chilled out, with crafts, professionally supplied by Agent

Susan (Cornish), and games.Everyone learnt how to use a parachute. You never know when you might need one!

We had our excellent Agents M-O-S-E (some of our talented Youth4Hope) and Z come

in to seek out the secret mole!This turned out to be the sneaky AGENT Z (Carol Savage) and although she confessed,

she still had to go to prison!

On Sunday, to complete a wonderful week, the Agents parent’s came to enjoy the final

part of MISSION RESCUE. Many I can report asked “When is your next Holiday Club?”

We pretended to be spies! There were two spies called Agent X and Agent Y. Agent Y wasn’t a very good spy and he kept getting things wrong! When he did we all had to shout “But why, Y!”

We all had different spy groups. Mine was called Golden Spy Association. The other groups were called Secret Binoculars, Team 007 and Jazzy Castle.

Except from being spies, we also learnt about the story of Moses. In the bible there are many other rescue missions - but the most important is Jesus’ rescue mission to save us from our sins!

On Tuesday evenings during January, February and March a merry band of people have been gathering in CoffeeLink on the waterfront for the latest Hope Church Ipswich Alpha course. Alpha is designed for anyone who is interested in exploring life’s big questions and the Christian faith. Each evening began with a delicious meal, lovingly prepared and served by our very own catering team, for whom we are truly thankful! After a short talk, during which we sipped CoffeeLink coffees, we split into groups to discuss the topic of the evening.

There are no forbidden questions during Alpha. It is hoped that the discussions gave our guests a chance to contemplate and grapple with the bigger questions of life, without feeling they would be judged for their opinions or expected to accept without question the text-book Christian answer.

The Alpha logo depicts a man struggling to carry a giant question mark. Our prayer for our Alpha guests is that their question marks will grow ever smaller as they seek and find their answers, which we believe can be found in a relationship with Jesus. How’s your question mark doing?

In a seamless transition, what kind of question marks are the people of Ipswich carrying? Are they large? Are they burdensome? Are they hidden in a corner behind an enormous ‘to do’ list? As a church we will be gathering these questions over the coming months during our ‘One Big Question’ campaign, in the hope that the people of Ipswich will dust off their question marks and take time to consider life, in all its

I went with an open mind as I don’t come from a Christian family and really found some weeks hard to understand but found the team a great help. I certainly had a lot of questions and would recommend that people ask as much as they can. As the weeks went on I found that the first few weeks began to make sense and it all came together. The team which, I must say was awesome, great food also so big thanks to the ladies for that and Mark, Len and the team for their support! It’s nice to hear a lot of people’s leaps of faith and how they came about. That really gave me some encouragement. One thing I always say is you have to be ready and 100% believe in it otherwise why would you make take that leap? I have now committed myself to God. I’m not instantly reading the bible and praying every day but I know that’s part of becoming more like Jesus. If you are thinking about it then do it. He is God and love is the key :) That’s my story.

The Winter of 2012/13 was very cold

but the warmth of God’s love was evident through the Ipswich Winter Night Shelter (IWNS). Based

on the “Housing Justice” model, it included facilities and volunteers from seven Ipswich churches and assisted over 40 guests between December 2012 and March 2013. Each church hosted one night of the shelter at its own building; and there was a twelve-person capacity each night, usually filled.

The churches that have been involved in the IWNS are: Hope Church Ipswich; Holy Trinity; Christ Church/St. Pancras Church; Ipswich International Church; Burlington Baptist Church; Salvation Army Hall; and St. Mary at Stoke. The IWNS Chair is Rev. Paul Daltry, the Project Manager is Paul Herbert, and many others have contributed to coordinating and staffing the ministry. Around 400 volunteers assisted. Brian Anstey, IWNS Volunteer Coordinator (with his wife, Sue Anstey, and Hugh Gibson), said of the ministry:

“I was really pleased and encouraged by the response of thevolunteers. They all deserve a massive pat on the back!”

Volunteers set up cots with freshly-washed linens, served delicious meals prepared by (in some cases professional) chefs who donated their time and talents, and interacted with the guests, chatting and playing cards and board games with them. God’s people served as His hands and feet to those who were hurting. And the prevailing atmosphere was one of peace and hope.

The guests came from many different situations. Mostly male, some were long-term homeless; others had fallen into difficulties recently though loss of employment or the ending of relationships. All needed hope and housing, and were welcomed into the shelter after having been interviewed to evaluate their situations and needs.

Hugh Gibson spoke of the change the shelter was making in people’s lives, “You could definitely see a difference from week to week... they were happier and more content each week. One gentlemen also said that he wanted to connect with a church as a result of being helped by the IWNS.” One of the guests, a young man who had become homeless recently, stated on the last night that he hoped to return the following year as a volunteer. I pray he does. That has happened before!

What did you eat for breakfast? Cornflakes? Are you sure? Really sure? Ah, but how do you know that you’re not in ‘The Matrix’ and just experiencing the sensation of eating cornflakes?

Depending on who you are, this chapter will either have you screaming “because it’s obvious!” or daydreaming silently to yourself the next day as you accidentally walk into a manhole thinking “I wonder if this giant hole is actually a hole at all?” Either way you will be led on a little exploration about knowledge, assumptions and common sense. Wilson lays down a statement that there are truths that can be proved and truths that can’t ever be proved. This leaves us with the question: How do we know when things can’t be proved? He suggests that we are all lesser shades of Detective Hercule Poirot, examining possibilities until we find the best available conclusion from the given circumstances. How have you solved your mystery?

Get your head out of the sand! It’s okay to ask questions. As I read the first 30 pages of “if God, Then What?” I was surprised how easily I got hooked to a book on apologetics. The prologue and first chapter cover the premise for the book “What evidence is there for that [belief in God]” and encourages those of a faith or none to ask questions, find evidence for what they believe.

Andrew Wilson talks through the topic of fundamentalism in an entertaining manner, starting with his angst as a young bigoted teenager and travelling through his poignant memories of Nigeria, highlighting his struggle to keep his faith through university, before finally comparing himself to Richard Dawkins. I fell in love with how Wilson illustrates his ideas with wonderful clarity keeping even a dyslexic like me wanting to read more, a book I would thoroughly recommend.

For those that don’t know, I finished at UCS last year and went out to the Philippines to be part of a wonderful Christian project in Cogeo.

I started a student centre involving English lessons, arts and crafts, games and teachings and assisted in teaching pre-school children. I have been running or assisting in Church groups (midweek, Saturday kids club and Sunday youth), preparing talks, discussions and games plus many events including a Christmas party for 400 children! One of the highlights has also been getting to know and supporting the youth.

I lived in a wonderful community, with many serious needs however, that doesn’t hinder their generosity, love and care for one another. I visited many beautiful places in and around Cogeo, watched many beautiful sunsets and enjoyed the different cultural lifestyle!
