ZusammenfassungDer vorliegende Artikel behandelt die vielschichtige Frage
. nach dem Ursprung des Volks- und Landnamens Rus' untersprachgeschichtlichem lickwinkel mit besonderer Riicksichtauf die aJtesten schriftlichen Quellen iiberwiegend des 9.-11.Jahrhunderts. Anfanglich 'wird darauf aufmerksam gemacht,da:lS die uralte (aber bislang nicht allgemein anerkannte) skan-dinavische Etymologie des Namens Rus' schon insofem kaumhaltbar ist, als dieser Name weder im Altnordischen noch ineiner anderen germanischen Sprache (bzw. deren Urdialekten)irgendeine verla:lSliche Urform aufweist. Von daher wiederumkann das finnische Ruotsi, welches fiir die Urform des slavi-schen Rus' immer wieder ausgegeben wird, aus dem Altnordi-schen nicht erklart werden. Des weiteren wird auf friihmittelal-terliche Quellen westeuropaischer, byzantinischer und orienta-lischer Provenienz eingegangen und demonstriert, da:lS der inihnen vorkommende Name Rus' auf keinen als eindeutig"germanisch" zu interpretieren ist. Die Namen der Dnjepr-schnellen in "De administrando imperio" des Konstantin Por-phyrogennetos, welche seit langem zur Begriindung der germa-nischen Herkunft und Etymologie von Rus' dienten, werdenVOm sprachlichen Gesichtspunkt neu analysiert, wobei zum

Teil neue Etymologien vorgeschlagen werden. OrientalischeQuellen, angefangen von Pseudo-Zacharias (Mitte des 6. Jahr-hunderts), erwahnen das Volk Rus' im n6rdlichen Schwarz-meergebiet, wo zu jener Zeit keine Vikinger anwesend waren.In diesem Zusammenhang wird die neue, von Oleg NikolaevicTrubacev (Akademiemitglied der Russischen Akademie derWissenschaften) entwickelte "indoarische" Etymologie, welchegrundsatzlich auf die Verbreitung des Namens Rus' vom Siidennach Norden hindeutet, er6rtert (und abgelehnt). Letztendlichwird auf die von polnischen Sprachwissenschaftlern langstbegriindete slavische Etymologie zuriickgegriffen, welchezusammen mit der siidlichen Lokalisierung der Ur-Rus' imSchwarzmeerraum notwendigerweise die Entlehnung deswestfinnischen Ruotsi aus dem Urostslavischen *roud-sb iiberostfinnische Sprachen des Wolga-Beckens im 7. oder 8. Jahr-hundert voraussetzt.

ZusammenfassungDer vorliegende Aufsatz stellt einen Versuch dar, die Mis-
sionsunternehmen der 40-er Jahre des 6. Jahrhunderts im Hin-tergrund der irchenpolitikJustinians zu schildern. Die Missi-
im eigentlic11en Sinne (d.l1. die AuBenmission) stellt dabei die Mission des Priesters Julianos zu den Nobaden dar,wobei die Mission Johannes Ephesus als innere Missionzu bezeichnen ist. Bei der Beschreibung der letztgenanntenMission \vird allein i.r konfessionelle ~usrichtung hervorge-hoben: trotz seiner m~hsitis, l.Jrzugug taufteJohannes die kleinasiatischen Heiden im Sinne des chalkedoni-schen Glaubens.
In Bezug auf die Missionierung Nubiens seiten des Pri-esters Julianos und seines Nachfolgers Longinos Ende der 60-erJahre werden die Umstande ihrer Tatigkeit analysiert, wie diese

Unter Heranziehung anderer, weniger fangreicher Quellen wird relative UnzuverHissigkeit der gaben Johannes' im Teile seiner Geschichte nachge\viesen, derden Vollzug und Erfolg des ganzen Utrnhs allein derKaiserin Theodora zuschreibt. 1 Aufsatz wird ein Versuch ternommen, zu beweisen, daB die 1nitiative fiir die Mission inNubien vielmehr von Kaiser Justinian ausging und von ihmvorbereitet worden war.
Auf Grund der Analyse zeitgenossischen und spaterenQuellen unter weitestgehender Beriicksicll.tigung unterschiedli-cher Meinungen der Forscher wird dariiber hinaus die Glaub-\viirdigkeit der Angaben 'der Annalen von Eutychios vonAlexandrien die urspriingliche melkitische Angehorigkeitder neugetauften Nubier festgestellt. Die L6sung des Problemsder urspriinglichen konfessionellen Angeh6rigkeit Nubiens
shit im richtigen Verstandnis der geographischen Terminizu liegen, die sich auf verschiedene Teile Nubiens beziehen,namlich, wie sich griechische, koptische und arabische Bezeich-nungen der V61ker und der K6nigreiche Nubiens zueinanderverhalten. Die gr6Bte Aufmerksamkeit wird dabei der genauenstimrrg des geographischen Terminus al-Maris ge-schenkt. Anhand verschiedener Quellen \vird gezeigt, daBdieser Terminus sich allein auf Oberagypten und nicht auf No-batien beziehen kann; des\vegen ist seine Vervvendung als gument gegen die Richtigkeit der Angaben von Eutychios nichtstatthaft (Abt. 1).
In der Abteilung II werden die Umstande der TatigkeitJakob Baradai beschrieben. Zuallererst wird gezeigt, daB diemonophysitische Tradition, \velche die Ordination Jakobs demTheodosios von Alexandriel1 zuschreibt, nicht verlaBlich ist.Vermutlich fand seine Ordination unte.r Beteiligung nicht-mo-nophysitischer isch6fe statt. Es ,vird auch mangelnde Glaub-wiirdigkeit der Angaben monophysitischenViten vonJakob festgestellt und die Tatsache hervorgehoben, daB seineTatigkeit vom kaiserlichen Hof aus kontrolliert und gelenktwurde. Dabei V\>ird die Rolle des abgesetzten PatriarchenAnthimos von KOl1stantinopel hinge\viesen, die bestimmteAufschliisse erlaubt beziiglich seiner Teilnahme der kirchli-chen Politik Justinians in den 40- Jahrel1, die auf die Vorberei-tung der Verurteilung der Drei Kapitel 11inzielte.
