Celebrating 45 Years 2015

PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: County has a special day coming up at the end of June

On June 30, Indian River County will be officially 90 years old, one of the youngest Florida counties. In 1925, the celebration and the cutting of the ribbon was June 29, to accommodate the people of the newly formed Martin County. They had an election to run on June 30. As a first act, both Martin and Indian River counties declared June 29 to be an official holiday. At this celebration, Mrs. A.W. Young presented an official banner. The banner has not been found. Members of the Tippin family had a picture of it that they shared with the library. It said Veritas Vincit – “Truth Prevails.” William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), a three-time Democratic nominee for president and a former Secretary of State, had a strong connection to Vero Beach. It is likely he presented his last speech before his death at the Indian River County celebration and to the Methodist Church later that evening. He died four weeks later. There is a

commemorative marker in front of the Heritage Center. Bryan became a resident of Miami in 1921 and became a regular visitor to Vero starting the following year. Recently, the library received two portraits of W.J. Bryan from the Bryan Davis family. Their grandfather was a secretary to Bryan in the early 1900s. The offices of the newly appointed Indian River

County officials were located in the first (1917-68) Seminole Building. Just two days before the celebration, Vero Bank & Trust installed a clock on the Seminole Building that sounded like Westminster and struck each quarter hour. Is this clock still here in Vero Beach? The first county commissioners: John H. Atkin, Chairman, O.O. Helseth of Oslo, Donald Forbes of Winter Beach, George A. Braddock of Sebastian and J.W. LaBruce of Fellsmere.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA title:

• It’s been almost two years since the County Commission gave the green light to a proposed major development along 58th Avenue called Providence Pointe. The “shock” value was pretty high. Developer Joseph Barile’s plans called for the 186 acres north of 49th Street to be transformed into a luxury rental community, with 481 residential units and a 57-room hotel. The village center would include specialty retail stores, restaurants and a movie theater, among other things. Back in August 2013, when commissioners voted 5-0 to allow the project across the street from Waterway Village to move forward, Barile said he was hoping to get started the following May. Well, it looks like he’s more than a year behind schedule. That’s not to say the project is dead. “They’re still moving forward,” said John McCoy, the

chief of Current Development for Indian River County. As with any project, various permits must be granted. Meanwhile, Providence Pointe’s website is being used to entice retailers. If this project becomes a reality, it will be a real game-changer for 58th Avenue. Even without Providence Pointe, though, this area of 58th Avenue is poised for explosive growth in the coming years. According to McCoy, Waterway Village is only about a third built out and Vero Lago is just past the halfway point. Plus, Harmony Reserve – a new 55-plus community in the vicinity of 33rd Street – recently received approval to begin clearing land. Kudos to Commissioner Tim Zorc for trying to keep the county ahead of this looming “growth” wave along 58th

Avenue. He believes it might be time to start the discussion about widening 58th Avenue to five lanes between 26th and 53rd streets “in a sooner fashion” than anticipated.• Last month, I mentioned the U.S. 1 sign proudly noting the consecutive state championships won by Vero Beach High School’s girls lacrosse team is way out of date. The sign says, “2006-11” – whereas it should be “2006-15” (yes, 10 consecutive state titles … amazing). Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works, expects a new sign to be in place “within the next few months.”• Speaking of outdated signs on U.S. 1, when is the proper authority going to remove the sign for the Winter Beach post office? (The sign is just north of 69th Street.) The post office has been closed since November 2011!• Roger Lenzi is back to four restaurants in his stable. He recently purchased YNot (U.S. 1 and Oslo Road) and will turn it into a sports bar called J.R.’s. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “It seems like it’s going to be a fun project.”

Lenzi and his wife, Terry, own Avanzare, Bijou Noche and Vero Prime. They also owned Burp!, but closed it in March. For J.R.’s, which will feature Southern food, Roger has a business partner in Ian Mock, who owns Blue Agave.• What’s the best piece of advice you would give one of this year’s high school graduates? Years ago, I said something along the lines of “work hard and good things will happen to you.” With more life experience behind me now, I’d emphasize the importance of two things: 1) living away from home; and 2) networking. • In going through some old photos, Richard Granata gave me one he took in Wyoming. The sign says: “Welcome to the town of Fort Laramie. Pop. 250 good people and 6 sore heads.” Hmmm. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? I wonder which came first, Fort Laramie’s “sore heads” or Sebastian’s “old grouches”?

Every day I find wonders here in Indian River County, from the wildlife to early morning sunrises. As a relative newcomer to the area, I recently discovered three more wonderful places. Hope you visit!

• The Tiki Bag: Do you like to find a special gift for someone dear? Well, I do too! At the Tiki Bag (9613 U.S. 1 in Sebastian), you will encounter wonderful smells upon entering. Marvelous handbags, beautiful jewelry, fun flip-flops, and other fun knick-knacks. I personally selected some items from Hawaii and a sweet smelling coconut candle. • A thrift store: Yes, even a thrift store can be a treasure. I like to think of myself as a thrift store connoisseur. I’ve been to many over the years hoping for a special item at a special bargain all the while, usually, contributing to a good cause.

Vero has an excellent thrift store – the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store (4580 U.S. 1) is amazing. It has something from the little items for the home, to large expensive items at greatly reduced costs. They don’t carry clothing, but if it is for a home, it is here. Large, airy, clean, and a good staff of many volunteers make this thrift store a real treasure. • A dog park: Sebastian has a great dog park (245 Keen Terrace). There are actually three parts.

One is for the smaller dogs to run and romp. The other is for the larger dogs. Tall pine trees help keep things cool and there are many places for the humans to sit and relax. But I did say three parts … the last is a walking trail around a pond. Did I forget? There is a place for people to “potty” too.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
