PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Some names of places exist now only in your GPS

Place names originate from someone. The familiar places we know: Vero, Sebastian, Roseland, Fellsmere, Wabasso and Winter Beach have been written about in this newsletter. Some subdivisions within Indian River County have strange names such as the “Kiss Subdivision.” If you own property, have you looked at your land description and wondered why does this place have such a name? It is usually based on someone’s history. There are places that no longer can be found on present-day maps, but can be found on maps a hundred years ago. Or they may never appear on a map and just be a place only the local people know. Then there are places that show up in your GPS that says you are not in Sebastian any more, but a place called Cummings. Did you make a wrong turn? Recently, I discovered a subdivision no longer has the original 1930s name, but was re-platted and renamed to the

current property owners’ tastes. Below are examples:• Cleve Hinton Creek – Located on Johns Island, this was most likely named after Cleveland Steverson Hinton, who died 1926. The Hinton family left Tallahassee in 1913 for Indian River County, which took 31 days by wagon drawn by two mules and a small yoke of oxen with three children.• Cummings – This place never existed as a town.

But, you can search for it on a Google map and it will be found near Old Dixie Highway and S. Indian River Drive in Sebastian. It was a railroad stop that was possibly named after a Cummings family that lived for a short time in the area. Do you have a place name that you would like to know the history? Please contact me at [email protected].

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for LeBron James to be given more credit for what his teams have accomplished:

• I’ve always found it strange when businesses allow campaign signs on their property. Not that it offends me – it doesn’t. It’s just that I don’t understand why businesses would want to risk alienating potential customers who are supporting a different candidate. Back in the day, it was taboo for businesses to take a political stand. On U.S. 1 in Vero Beach, perhaps the most prominent campaign sign is in front of Einstein Bagels – it’s for Erin Grall, who is running for State Representative. I would think it gives pause to supporters of her opponents – Lange Sykes, Dale Glading and Greg MacKay – about eating there. Or maybe not. In front of Arby’s are signs for John Kim, who is running

for School Board. In the coming weeks, the number of political signs in the county will increase tenfold, and then some. Businesses will be under more pressure to allow signs on their property. I’ve talked with business owners in the past, and many said they allowed campaign signs from multiple candidates in the same race. (Given the giant sign for Grall in front of Einstein Bagels, I’d be surprised if her opponents are allowed to put signs on the property.) If I owned a retail business, there’s no way I’d want a campaign sign in front of my store. I read an article recently that said roughly one-third of businesses are comfortable with sharing their political views with customers – I’d be with the other two-thirds. This is going to be the most exciting year in local politics in

quite some time. Let’s just hope things remain civil in every race. • A few years ago, while still at the Press Journal, I wrote a column about Christian Futch having perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade. A truly remarkable achievement. I was happy to hear Casey Futch (the brother of Christian) graduated from Vero Beach High School this year – and he also had perfect attendance since kindergarten. Very cool.• Every so often, when driving to Bob Evans for breakfast, we get stuck behind heavy equipment (usually a grader) heading down 58th Avenue. It can be very frustrating. That’s why I could relate to the first sentence of Carla Klein’s email: “Is there a rule or law, other than just common courtesy, that requires a slow moving tractor (or similar vehicle) to pull over to allow traffic to pass?” She wrote about the frustration drivers on 43rd Avenue experienced one morning when the tractor refused to pull over to let traffic pass. “When I was stopped at the light at 26th Street, to his right

side, I did angrily gesture to him that he should have pulled over,” she wrote. “He gestured back angrily. He clearly could not care less that he inconvenienced multiple other drivers and created a dangerous situation when frustrated drivers passed him in a non-passing zone. … Law or not, perhaps his employers should speak to him about being a little considerate.” Agreed.• When people are driving 65 mph on the Barber Bridge, as was the case one morning last week, it’s time for the Vero Beach Police Department to have more of a presence there.• Another follow-up to a column I wrote in 2012 for the Press Journal: Congratulations to Armand Zarrella for completing a successful skydive June 5 in Sebastian. Did I mention Armand recently turned 94? Armand’s first skydive was at age 90!• What are the chances Donald Trump will have one of his huge rallies in Indian River County this fall? It’s not as farfetched as you might think.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Steve Glaser was born in the hospital at West Point. His father, a master sergeant in the Air Force, was stationed at a nearby base in Newburgh, New York. With that type of background (being part of a military family), one might assume he prefers a structured work environment. However, that has never been the case. “I was never a 9-to-5 person,” he said. “Most of my life, I worked for myself.” Steve, 60, is a professional photographer. He launched Steve Glaser Photography in 1980 in North Miami Beach. (He moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1978 after graduating from New Jersey’s Montclair State University.) During most of the 1990s, he operated three photography

studios in South Florida. “It was a great run,” he said during our conversation at Bob Evans. Steve moved to Vero Beach in 2014 and has been trying to build his business locally by attending networking events. But, as an industry, photography is in decline – just like seemingly every other industry today.

“Parents don’t bring their kids in like they used to,” he said. “Family portraits … it’s not what it was.” Blame it, in part, on the iPhone. “I can do a whole wedding with this phone,” he said. “It’s all composition and lighting.” Steve’s focus is weddings, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs and youth sports. (If you’d like to inquire about his services, Steve’s phone number is 772-999-3254.) “I don’t think I’d like to retire,” he said. “I’m not a retiring-type person. I like doing what I do.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest June on record in Vero Beach? It was 1998, with an average temperature of 83.4 degrees, followed by 2010 (82.3 degrees) and 2015 (81.9 degrees). The coolest June on record in Vero Beach? It was 1966, with an average temperature of 77.5 degrees, followed by 1984 (77.7 degrees) and 1968 (78.0 degrees).
