PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Documents from Naval Air Station available at library
In the Archive Center, there are 16 boxes of historical records and photographs about the U.S. Naval Air Station in Vero Beach. It is unlikely that the federal government has copies of most of these records. In 1999, by way of a successful eBay bid, the records were returned to Vero Beach. It has not been proven, but the secretary to the admiral may have taken the records back to her home in Ohio when the base closed in 1946. They were later found in an Ohio estate sale. The documents were given declassification status when the library received them. Below is an overview of what’s inside the boxes.• Boxes 1‐5: Original manuscripts “History of the Naval Air Station – Nov. 24, 1942 to Sept. 2, 1945.” Many volumes are missing.• Box 6: The Buccaneer newspaper (1943-46), which was published on base. Most are originals, some are
photocopies. It includes an unfinished index. • Box 7: Royal Canadian Air Force Night Vision Trainer Instructor’s Manual.• Box 8: Roster of Officers 1943‐1946.• Boxes 9‐10: Photocopies of originalsin boxes 1‐5.• Boxes 11‐12: Files on the men and women who served at the base. Most records were created through donations from the soldiers’ families.
• Box 13: Background research and information for the historical marker and memorial plaque that are at the Vero Beach airport. It also includes newspaper clippings.• Box 14: Miscellaneous documents and photographs.• Boxes 15‐16: Several hundred original photographs from the U.S. Naval Base collection purchased on eBay. To access the materials, please use the online 55-page finding aid that can be found on the library website.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the “Mockingjay, Part 2” hype to subside:
• Miller’s Neighborhood Market opened in 2007 at the high-traffic intersection of U.S. 1 and 17th Street in Vero Beach. A few months ago, Gus Miller decided to let someone else lease the gas station / convenience store. It’s now being operated by Banana Racing International Corp. The corporation truly is international. Marlen Hurter, who runs the company, lives in Switzerland. She is a frequent visitor to Vero Beach. While this is the first business in the United States for Marlen (pronounced like “Marlene”), this isn’t her first rodeo, as they say. While an accounting and tax office is her main business, she is involved in several other ventures in Switzerland. For example, she owns a Ford dealership and runs an engineering company.
She loves Vero Beach and decided she wanted to own a business here. “It is all remote-controlled from Switzerland, but it works,” she said. “We are in constant contact across the ocean and always informed about development and needs to run this station.” Shawn Schneider is the store’s on-site manager. He has been with the store ever since Miller opened it in ’07. There are a lot of changes being made inside the convenience store, and everything should be in place by January. Marlen called it a “privilege” to operate a business in Vero Beach. So, what’s the story behind the strange name of the corporation? Banana Racing has been involved in drag-racing in Europe for several years. One of the members is Gary Walko, who lives in Vero Beach. He has a BMW “banana” drag-racing car. He

also designed Banana Racing International’s humorous logo. • After 15 years of leasing, the owner of the Kountry Kitchen decided to buy the building when it went on the market. The deal was finalized earlier this month. Mark Santangelo, 54, is the hands-on owner of the iconic restaurant on Old Dixie Highway. So, as far as he is concerned, what’s the difference between leasing and owning? “It means I’ll be flipping eggs for a long time,” he said.• On 26th Street, just west of 66th Avenue, is a sign to let people know that “Fire Station #14” is coming. It’s tucked between a pair of entrances to Trillium. (Thanks to Phil Weiler for emailing a photo.)• What kind of “demands” are in the contracts of performers in the Masters of Music series at the Emerson Center? George Winston, the Grammy Award-winning pianist scheduled to appear on Nov. 20, asked for something rather unusual. “Mr. Winston is apparently an extreme night owl because
one of his requirements is that he needs to rehearse on the performance piano sometime between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the night before the concert,” said Marty Paris, one of the producers of the Masters of Music series.• Melbourne radio station 99.3 FM started playing continuous Christmas music during the first week in November. As I posted on Twitter, “I’ll listen (because I like Christmas music), but I’d just as soon wait 3 weeks.” Kudos to 97.1 FM (“The Ocean”) for sticking with tradition. The station is waiting until the day after Thanksgiving to play its first Christmas song, according to Hamp Elliott. Even then, it’ll be only a sprinkling of holiday songs. It won’t make the switch to continuous Christmas music until Dec. 11.• A quick “like mother, like daughter” tale: Sebastian resident Kim Massung was born on Nov. 25. Same with her daughter, Elaine. Kim got married on Nov. 25. You guessed it … same with Elaine.

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
After seven years away, Jenny Seemayer returned to Indian River County in 2013 to oversee a community of small businesses in the Miracle Mile area. Regus, a European company that rents office space, hired her as the general manager in Vero Beach. It has 43 offices on the third floor of the Bank of America building. Jenny, 27, graduated from Sebastian River High School in 2006 but soon said goodbye to Florida. She attended Maryville College in Tennessee, earning a degree in business management, and then her first job took her to Massachusetts. She actually applied for an opening Regus had in West Palm Beach, but they asked about her interest in the Vero Beach position. “They wanted a local person who could help grow the business,” she said.
Jenny does that by networking. She attends about eight networking events per month. “I love networking and meeting new people,” she said. If you’re a small business looking to rent office space, give her a call at 453-2702. Away from work, Jenny’s hobby is collecting DVDs. She has more than 3,000 in her collection. “I like variety,” she said. “I’ll watch anything.” What’s her favorite type of movies?
“Nothing beats the black-and-white flicks from days gone by,” she said. And, she added, nothing beats a movie starring Greta Garbo or Bette Davis. She described herself as a “huge foodie.” Earlier this month, she just missed being able to have live Octopus at an Orlando restaurant. What are her favorite restaurants locally? Bijou Noche and Takara. “They know me by name there,” she said.

THE SALVATION ARMY OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
The percentage of people living in unincorporated areas of Indian River County has remained relatively steady through the years. In 1980, 64 percent of our population lived in unincorporated areas of the county. In 2000, it dropped to 63 percent. In 2014, it was estimated to be 66 percent.

328. “What Have I Done to Deserve This?”(1987) Pet Shop Boys with Dusty SpringfieldMemory: A perfect pairing for this song. Great chemistry.
327. “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”(1998) AerosmithMemory: If I would have heard this song one more time, it might not have made the Top 500.
