PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Round Island parks turning 50 years old this year

Round Island Oceanside and Round Island Riverside parks soon will be 50 years old. They did not become parks until April 1966. In 1925, several individuals from Kansas City tried to set up a resort within the same area. It was called the Kansas City Colony and it retains the name on plat maps. During World War II, the U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base out of Fort Pierce trained on the beaches. Local people called it “Normandy Beach” because many of the men who landed at Normandy trained here. In January 1965, an offer was submitted to the Board of County Commissioners to purchase oceanfront land for development as a public park. It included 450 feet of beachfront. The property was directly across the street from the islands. The Florida Internal Improvement Fund sold Round Island and an unnamed island to the county for park development. They asked the county to “develop

the land for purposes of public convenience.” The above action prompted the county commission to purchase the property offered for a total price of $108,000. Later the county received a grant refund for half the price. The two islands and the parcel of land from the ocean to the river are 88 acres. The first section of Round Island Oceanside opened April 1966. At a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, it became apparent that a park system was needed. Commissioner Donald

Macdonald of Roseland, chairman of the Parks Committee, accepted the job. Sebastian Inlet and Round Island parks were priorities. There is a park on the St. Sebastian River named after Donald Macdonald for his many years of dedication to the park system. Today we are grateful for his work and the beautiful parks of Indian River County.

JUST WONDERING: What were the library’s most popular books in 2015?

– Source: Indian River County Library

1) “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins

2) “Memory Man” by David Baldacci

3) “The Stranger” by Harlan Coben

4) “Insatiable Appetites” by Stuart Woods

5) “NYPD Red 3” by James Patterson

6) “Motive” by Jonathan Kellerman

7) “Private Vegas” by James Patterson

8) “Hot Pursuit” by Stuart Woods

9) “Gathering Prey” by John Sandford

10) “14th Deadly Sin” by James Patterson

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the GOP presidential field to whittle down to the Final Four:

• Next time you’re on U.S. 1 between 8th and 17th streets, take a long look around. Take a photo. Years from now, it’ll be a great piece of history. As you can tell by all of the land-clearing that has taken place, that stretch is going to look dramatically different in a few months. I’m torn about the transformation. Currently, the stretch is not visually appealing – it looks “stale” – and could use a makeover. But adding two gas superstores, Wawa (12th Street) and Cumberland Farms (17th Street), will make the stretch look like Anywhere, USA. Still, given the choice, I’ll take the latter. A refurbishing for that area is long overdue. I do feel sorry for the three locally owned gas stations

between 8th and 17th streets – Miller’s Neighborhood Market, Sifford’s Exxon and Steil’s. They’ll have a hard time competing against prices at Wawa and Cumberland Farms. Wawa and Cumberland Farms are going to be game-changers for U.S. 1. It’s going to be fun to follow their race to open first. Right now, Wawa is ahead by about three weeks. The last race like this was at the intersection of U.S. 1 and 53rd Street in 2009 – when Walgreens and CVS were simultaneously building new drug stores. (CVS opened five days before Walgreens.) Prediction: Cumberland Farms will open before Wawa.• A city of 17,000 is under a boil-water advisory for three days? Really? In 2016? No way should the required testing by the state take that long.

HEARTFELTFAMILY COMEDYHEARTFELTFAMILY COMEDY

Nick, a single, Italian-American marketing executive from New Jersey, routinely visits his four grandparents every Sunday for family dinner. But when Nick announces he is being promoted and moving to Seattle, his grandparents quickly concoct a series of hilarious schemes to keep Nick from leaving!

• I’ve long considered State Road 60 and 58th Avenue to be the worst intersection in the county. However, U.S. 1 and 17th Street is quickly moving up the list and, at some point, will take over No. 1.• As I’ve written before, I’m fascinated by the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Donald Trump deserves credit for making it the most interesting race for a party’s nod in my lifetime. The good feeling about the political process won’t last long, though, as we’re about to be bombarded with political ads on West Palm Beach TV stations. The deadline to register for the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary is Feb. 16. I’ve still believe one of the governors – Jeb Bush, Chris Christie or John Kasich – will end up getting the GOP nomination.• So my sister, Nancy, who lives in Athens, Georgia, was at a meeting with fellow retirees, and a husband and wife new to the group say they’re from Vero Beach, Florida. My sister asked Jack and Karen Ernsberger if they knew me ... and

bingo! (Apparently, they remembered me as a Press Journal columnist.) Too funny.• In this space last week, I wrote about Bill and Mary Pettigrew giving me a tour of Indian River Shooting Sports. As we rode around the facility on a golf cart, I learned they have a collection of more than 1,100 DVDs. They watch one movie a night. They start right after “Wheel of Fortune.”• A suggestion from Marty Paris: “Ask people to send in their favorite ‘Stranded on a Desert Island Items.’ Generally, it would be their favorite book, album, movie and person to be stranded with.” OK, Marty, you’re up. “Joseph Heller’s ‘Catch-22,’ Neil Young’s ‘After the Gold Rush,’ ‘The Shawshank Redemption,’ and Charlize Theron (although for full disclosure, Bev Paris is a close second).” I’d love to see “Stranded on a Desert Island” lists from other readers. Send your list to [email protected].

Overlooked cinematic gems: Date movie edition

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• In Good Company (2004, PG-13, directed by Paul Weitz). Dan (Dennis Quaid) is a fifty-something advertising executive for a popular sports magazine. When a large global corporation buys out the magazine, Dan’s life is thrown into turmoil. It gets worse. Dan’s new boss Carter (Topher Grace) is a 26-year-old upstart, and Dan’s wife just announced they are having another baby! Not bad enough? Dan’s college-age daughter (Scarlett Johansson) is beginning to fall for Carter. Poor Dan.• All About Steve (2009, PG-13, directed by Phil Traill). Mary (Sandra Bullock) is the crossword puzzle editor for a major newspaper. When set up on a blind date with Steve (Bradley Cooper), Mary falls instantly in love.

Unfortunately, due to her pedantic nature, Steve doesn’t feel the same way. So Mary decides to follow him cross-country in order to change his mind. Will Steve realize that Mary is the one for him? Or will Mary be brought up on stalking charges?• Failure to Launch (2006, PG-13, directed by Tom Day). When 35-year-old Trip (Matthew McConaughey) refuses to leave the nest, his parents (Terry Bradshaw and Cathy Bates) take matters into their own hands. In comes Paula (Sarah Jessica

Parker), an “interventionist” who, under the premise of a blind date set up by Trip’s parents, begins to work her magic. However, things get complicated when Paula begins to develop feelings for Trip. Also stars Bradley Cooper and Zooey Deschanel. Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest February on record in Vero Beach? It was 1949, with an average temperature of 71.5 degrees, followed by 1997 (70.7 degrees) and 1990 (70.3 degrees). The coolest February on record in Vero Beach? It was 1958, with an average temperature of 55.1 degrees, followed by 2010 (56.6 degrees) and 1978 (56.7 degrees).
