‘CURIOUS LEGENDS’ OUTREACH :

2017-18 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROJECT On Monday the 6th of November Glendore students and staff were treated to a special dance performance by Ella Julaiha, a visiting international artist from Kalimantan Province in Indonesia. Ella performed some beautiful Indonesian dances in full traditional costume. Following her performance Ella held dance workshops for our Senior, Junior and Aboriginal Dance Groups. Helping to run and facilitate these workshops was Mitchell Reece (Curious Legends Artistic Director). Our students engaged in learning some traditional dances that included stories from Ella’s childhood in Indonesia. Some very lucky students were able to dress up in traditional dance costumes and all students danced with handmade baskets and bags that Ella had brought back from Indonesia especially for the workshops. This truly was a fantastic authentic cultural experience for our dance students. We offer our deep thanks to Ella, Mitchell and Hardy from Curious Legends. They did amazing work and also generously donating the baskets and bags to the school for use in our Creative Arts programs. Ms McDowell, Mrs Budd and Miss Naden,

TRANSITION RUGBY LEAGUE GALA DAY Congratulations to our Glendore A and B teams who participated in the Transition Rugby League Gala at Wallsend Campus on Tuesday 7th November. Our Glendore A team were ‘Runners Up’ this year and our Glendore B team placed equal third place with Maryland. Congratulations to Mason K. Yom B. and Logan G for receiving the best and fairest player certificates for their teams. The players would very much like to thank Mr Williamson, and Taison, who gave his valuable time to coach the teams each week for the past term. Thank you to all of the parents who support the players on what was a successful and fun day for all.

CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY

Dear CU Children and Families, I would like to write a letter of thanks and congratulations to all students that were in attendance at the Children’s University graduation. It was a night to remember. My team and I would like to firstly congratulate all students for their behaviour and enthusiasm shown throughout the evening. We planned for this evening to be a great celebration and recognition of the effort and time you have placed into the learning opportunities throughout the year. Thank you to all families that were in attendance. We appreciate your presence on the evening and hope you enjoyed the celebration and look forward to seeing you all again throughout the year at our CU holiday workshops and at the Graduation Ceremony in 2017. Children’s University continues to encourage children and their families to keep learning in their communities during the Christmas holiday period. Holiday workshops hosted by Children’s University will re commence in term 1 2018 in each of our three geographic regions – Central Coast, Newcastle and Cessnock. Your passport hours continue across into next year. To be eligible for graduation in 2018 you need to have moved up into the next award category. For example, if you got 30 hours this year you would have to make it to 65 hours to get the Silver Award.

This program is an annual commitment. Children have the capacity to opt into the program each year. If you would like to be involved next year, please indicate this to your teacher in charge of the program. Once again thank you, children for your enthusiasm for learning and parents for your support. If you or your family has any questions about the program, please contact us. Graduation is a large undertaking with many moving cogs and as such we will be evaluating the evening, if you would like to make suggestions for improvements or place a comment regarding the evening please do so at [email protected] or call 49218739. Hope to see you all in 2018. Children’s University Team

ABORIGINAL DANCE EXCURSION TO GLENDORE CHILD CARE CENTRE

On Wednesday 8th November the Aboriginal Dance group were lucky enough to perform for the Glendore Child Care Centre. Mr Newham along with the dance group performed five dances for the students and staff. Students from the child care centre were then invited to dance with us and share in our Aboriginal culture. The smiles on the faces of all students showed just how excited and special this visit was for the Aboriginal Dance students and the preschool. A special thank you to Glendore Child Care Centre for allowing us to visit and we look forward to visiting again soon!

Please see our photos later in the newsletter!

GLENDORE PERFORMING ARTS ROADSHOW On Monday the 30th of October students in Senior Dance, Junior Dance and the Choir participated in the Glendore Performing Arts Road Show. This involved over 80 students travelling to two local nursing homes to perform and showcase their skills and talents in creative arts. Our dance groups, taught by Mrs Cheryl Bailey, performed 6 colourful energetic jazz dances and our choir, taught by Miss Nina Carol, performed two beautiful songs. It was wonderful to see the joy on the faces of the elderly residents as they watch our students perform. All students are to be congratulated on their fantastic performances and the impeccable behaviour displayed throughout the day. MS McDowell, Mrs Budd and Miss Carol

GOOD FOR KIDS, GOOD FOR LIFE Our school is participating in Hunter New England Health’s Good for Kids, Good for Life program which has been working with schools in our region for more than a decade to implement healthy eating and physical activity programs. As part of the program Good for Kids are currently measuring the activity levels of students. For parents of children in Years 2 and 3 you received an information statement asking your permission for your child to participate, which will involve them wearing an accelerometer each day while at school for one school week. An accelerometer is worn on the wrist and looks like a watch but captures activity levels.

Once data is collected schools will be randomly selected to receive support, either now or in 12 months’ time, to assist schools with the scheduling of physical activity. This will include the provision of professional development for our staff as well as the provision of resources and on-going support from the Good for Kids team. We thank you for your participation and encourage you to contact them if you have any further questions.

Please return the form by Friday 17th

November. Thank you.

PAYING IT FORWARD ~ LENDING A HELPFUL HAND

Australia’s Melbourne Declaration has two Goals, stating that:

Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence; &

All young Australians become Successful learners, Confident and Creative individuals; and Active and Informed citizens

We are teaching alongside the leaders of the future. As such, we are lending a hand to our local community members, who may not be as fortunate as us. We have a nearly-full Red Box as a collection point for those small bottles/containers of soaps (hard/liquid), shampoos, conditioners, lotions, sewing kits, hygiene items and shoe shines that many people collect during stays at hotels, motels and resort. Help us help others!
