1. BACKGROUND

It is an individual or team endurance race of around 250 kilometers at a pace decided by each competitor who must be selfsufficient foodwise. The event itself is spread over 7 days and is made up of 6 stages of 30 to 90 kilometres including as night one

From the 23 participants on the very first Marathon des Sables it has grown to a trully global event with over 1.000 athletes that will take part at the 27th edition in 2012

It is held in April in an environment consisting of earth, sand and stones in the dried ergs and wadis of the South Moroccan Sahara

27 HISTORY

Patrick Bauer, founder and spirit of the MSD, at the age of 28, decided to set out on a desert adventure trying to cross the Sahara desert on foot. It was a 350 kilometre itinerary in a completely autonomous manner with the minimum of equipment; a encouraged him pair of walking shoes, a backpack containing a 15 litre water tank and food composed mainly of dry fruit, peanuts, concentrated milk, food tablets, drugs, a sleeping bag and a few warm clothes. This was the start to the most challenging of all Marathons, 243 kilometers in 7 days . A unique experience that to share his passion on the Sahara expanses.

The event maintains the drama of a long distance desert marathon; the heat, the sand storms, and the physical endurance that the participants go through, makes the MDS the toughest Marathon of all times after 26 years of existence.

1. BACKGROUND

Atlantide Organisation Is the official organizer of the Marathon des Sables since its creation in 1986 with headquarters in France and is represented in more than 25 countries. A team of about 400 members look after the competition: - Racing direction - Timming - Checking - Patrols - Logistics - Data Processing - Press CP - Satellite and Radio CP - Medical - Financial administration - Bivouac

7. HOSPITALITY

MDS offers an unparalleled Hospitality service for its guests during the last two days of race offering private tent accomodation and catering in an incredible surrounding. Guests will be able to meet the participants, enjoy a concert of the Paris Opera who year after year travels to the Bivouac to offer a n incredible concert for one night , and share the ambiance and excitement with the rest of the organization. They will also attend the final race day and greet all the finishers on arrival.

8. ENVIRONMENT The “Marathon des Sables” organisation team has always been concerned about the protection of the environment and this is made concrete through several actions:

Printing of documents on recylcled paper

Ban on throwing returnable bottles and different types of packaging on the route, with penalties imposed

Waste collection and destruction

Self combustion incinerator to destroy waste

Cleaning and dissolving processes using biodegradable products for the toilets

Lighting of the bivouac comissioners´tent with solar panels and a rechargeable gel battery using an automobile socket

Distribution of pocket ashtrays

The MDS has its carbon footprint analysed

2010 Results:

•  Decrease in Quads onsite

•  Rigorous management of lorry movements and use of light vehicles for logistical supply of the CP.

•  Use of renewable energy for lighting at the CP, in the commisaires´tent and the clinic

In 2012 The MDS has compensated for its consumption of CO2 in 2011 by making a financial contribution to installing renewable energy systems, amounting 25,000 euros, in accordance with the carbon footprint analysis result

8. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Many MDS competitors find an additional motivation in deciding to run to raise funds for charity work.

The MDS team encourages these actions and has always been involved in the successful realisation of important projects in collaboration with other associations:

- Eight solar pumps have been installed

- Distribution of school materials in isolated villages,

- Development of a school in Tarigt, with a toilet block and solar heated showers,

- Construction of an artisanal complex for women in Jdaid, with a workshop, school, crèche, meeting room, kitchen, toilet block and dispensary.

MDS has recenlty created the association SOLIDARITE MARATHON DES SABLES based in Ouarzazate and the centre aims to promote the teaching of fundamental and universal values through sport from the youngest age, raise awareness of hygene and safety amongst mothers and provide literacy classes:

SPORT EVEIL ACADEMIE ( Sports Initiation Academy ) - From 3-5 years Eveil Corporel ( Body Initiation ) - From 6 -11 years Initiation Athletisme ( Athletics Initiation ) - Child development, motor skills, social and educative relationships and children over 11 monitoring according their sporting competences. FEMMISSIMA – WELCOME CENTER FOR WOMEN - Support classes for child education, hygene and health, microprojects, literacy, nutrition…

5. INTERACTIVE MEDIA 27 Available on the official website darbaroud.com software Posi TDCOM System,

allows families and friends of the competitors to follow the race in real time and a witness live the arrival of

the riders. A camera webcam installed at each stage finish also allows users to share the intensity of
