biographies and the descriptions of their presentations,

imagine the joy of learning different ways that you can

believe that this convention program lives up to our motto,

Better and Better If you join us, we can say, Better,

better, AND BETTER! You dont have to be a Silva

graduate; everyone is welcome.

A featured article by Max Rubio shares information about

the Silva Methods updated approach to teaching Silva

techniques using focused thinking. The message comes

from Jos Silva who, in his wisdom, taught us to go to

the alpha level and concentrate on what we desire. Rubio

explains that the importance of maintaining ones focus is

a powerful tool.

Every year the Silva convention attracts hundredsof Silva Method graduates from around the world.This year, the 40th anniversary of the Silva Meth-

od, held in coordination with Laredos 250th anniversary,promises to be our best convention ever.

Six months ago we embarked on a project to

introduce a new teaching concept to make Jos Silvas

original Silva Method program easier to understand

and benecial to more people. The new focused-

thinking delivery of the Silva Method program is

you had been fortunate enough to have met my

father-in-law, you would have taken note of how

upset he would get when someone would come up to

him after a class to say, Oh Jos, thank you so much

for changing my life! Looking at the person straight

in the eye, he would adamantly respond, No, I did

not change your life, YOU did it. I just gave you the

tools. And today, in

2006, this continues

to be our message.

Since day one, Jos

Silvas mission was

about getting people

to realize their true

human potential and

to help themselves and

their fellow men. It is

also about commitment

to practice the sixteen

Silva exercises. Silvaswish was that you

recognize how much

control you have

over your life when

you focus your mind

and reacquaint yourself with your own, personal

creativity. Mr. Silva always wanted you to obtain your

goals and to shut out negative inuences. Today, we

call it self-empowerment, and it is the keystone of

the Silva Method.

Hilda started her proessional career withthe Silva Method in 1970. Her rst positionwas in the nancial department.

In 1973 she married and had the opportu-nity to raise her amily. She took the timeto raise her two sons. Shetaught Silva to her chil-dren, as her ather taughtto her. I believe we shouldteach the Silva Method tothe young so they can con-quer any challenge thatcomes beore them.

In 1988 she returned toTe Silva Method, over-seeing the Electronics De-partment. She was able toorganize and increase theproduction o several relaxation devices.In 1992, Hilda accepted a position in theFinancial Department with the opportu-nity to improve customer service.

When Jose Silva passed away in 1999,Hilda was elected Chie Executive Ocero the Silva Method. My greatest accom-

plishment is to represent my ather. Its anenormous task, but its awesome, she said.Te best part about the Silva Method isthe people; to hear them call with prob-lems, then call back a ew weeks later hap-py and well.

In addition to being CEO, she is currentlyChairman o the Board and Director oUnited States Lecturers.

earned his B.A. at Spring Hill College inAlabama in 1955, with a major in Latin.Following that he worked in systemsanalysis and sales or a leading company;then he entered the eld o secondaryeducation as a teacher in 1957 in NewOrleans. In 1959 he graduated with anM.A. in English rom ulane University.

From 1963 he studied in Rome, Italy, atSt. Anselms University and was awardeda degree in philosophy. Aer returning to

the United States hedid graduate studiesin theology and alsobecame certiedin counseling andguidance. Desiringto go more deeplyinto the study opsychology, hebegan graduatestudies in counselingpsychology at theUniversity o exasat Austin, entering

doctoral candidacy in 1968. While hewas serving as a counseling psychologistunder supervision or an internship inHouston, he was introduced to the SilvaMethod, studying under Jos Silva. Hethen joined Mr. Silva as his rst ull-timeinstructor in the U.S. and is consideredto be one o the oremost instructors and

authorities on the Silva Method.

Harry McKnight has presented the SilvaMethod around the globe: Alaska toAustralia and New Zealand, Canada toArgentina, Ireland, Great Britain, Franceto Spain, and Western and Eastern Europeto South Arica. Among Harrys manyawards, he lists the Silva International,Inc. World Cup or 1997.

is a clinical psychologist with over 40 yearso experience. He has worked in medicaleducational and business areas as welas private practice. Dr. DeSau has beenassociated with the Silva organizationsince 1971. As Director o EducationaResearch, he conducted many o the earlyresearch projects.

He has taught the Silva Method, GraduateProgram as well as numerous workshopsincluding the MIND programs. He hasreceived numerous awards rom theSilva organization including the SilvaWorld Cup. Dr. DeSau has developedand marketed tapes and CDs includingChanging Limiting Belies, Achieving Goalsand Outcomes, Wellness and RecoveryControlling the Aging Process and TePower o Choice.

Long known as the Gateway to Mexico, Laredo,exas sits on the banks o the Rio Grande, justacross the river rom its sister city Nuevo Laredo,Mexico. Visitors enjoy the convenience o beingable to park in downtown Laredo and walk tothe tourist district in Nuevo Laredo

San Agustin de Laredo, a colonial city o NewSpain ounded in 1755, was named or a town inSantander, located on the north coast o Spain.Nuevo Santander, one o the last northern prov-inces o New Spain, was established by the Span-

iard Jos de Escandn as part o a program tocolonize northern Mexico. Appointed governor,Escandn was responsible or the colonizationalong the Rio Grande, and a chain o six settle-ments were established, with Camargo beingthe earliest in 1749. Te other outposts includedReynosa (1749), Dolores (1750), Revilla (1750),and Mier (1752). Since no missions or presidi-os were associated with its ounding, Laredo isconsidered the oldest independent settlement inexas and is the only remaining Spanish colonialsettlement on the north bank o the lower RioGrande.

Laredo was ounded on the north bank o theRio Grande on May 15, 1755, when Captainoms Snchez, with three amilies, was grantedpermission to settle 15 leagues o land near anIndian ord on the Rio Grande. Operated as a

amily rancho, the Snchez estate ran cattle,sheep, goats, horses, mules and oxen. In 1767,the city was laid out, and in the years to ollow,ranching became the sustenance o the colony.

Te 1757 inspection reported eleven amiliesowning 100 cattle, 125 mules, 712 horses, and9,089 sheep and goats. Te rst exas cattledrives took place along the San Antonio-Laredoroad to Saltillo in the 18th century, and Laredobecame an important rontier outpost on thelower Camino Real, or Kings Road, whichstretched rom Saltillo through San Antonio toLos Adaes. During the Spanish-Mexican period,the exas cowboy was born. Round-ups o wildcattle called mesteos were regulated by the City

Council, and brands were publicly registered.

Te Spanish settlement became a Mexican cityin 1821 when Mexico gained it independencerom Spain, and, during the early 1800s, a trad-ing economy developed as cattle hides andwool were traded south in exchange or ood

and household necessities. However, trade was

disrupted and many ranchos werewiped out by the raids o the Co-manche and Apache Indians who

reaped the spoils o war and gainedprestige in their warrior-based societies. Te Carrizos, another groupo Native Americans who practiceda hunting-gathering existence, weredecimated by disease and eventuallyassimilated into Spanish culture.

Disgruntled with the Mexican centralist governments rule by dictatorship and it

complacency in deending the northern rontierom Indian attack, many Laredoans supportedthe constitutional convention which created thRepublic o the Rio Grande on January 7, 1840Laredo became a capital o the new republicwhich attempted to unite amaulipas, Nuevo

Leon, and parts o South exas. Aer severaskirmishes with the Mexican army, the shortlived republic came to an end, enduring only283 days. Although the Republic o exas, whichhad won its independence rom Mexico in 1836attempted to claim Laredo, its citizens remainedloyal to Mexico aer the deeat o the Republico the Rio Grande.

In 1845, the annexation o exas by the United States led to the declaration o war againstMexico. Shortly aer the all o Mexico, the RioGrande was declared the boundary between theUnited States and Mexico. Under the reaty oGuadalupe Hidalgo, Laredo ocially becamepart o exas. Mexicans who wanted to retain

their citizenship moved across the river. Tisarea previously settled as part o Laredo wasnamed Nuevo Laredo in 1848. An estimated 120reugee amilies planted their roots and grew toa population o around 2,000 in the 1870s.n
