The Democratic Alliance has laid a com-plaint against the municipality with the environmental management inspectors (the Green Scorpions). While the municipal-ity promised to take urgent steps, Tuesday morning saw sewage pumped into the park in Sandsteen street.

A heavy smell permeated the area and a stream of raw sewage lead down into the street. “This is a health concern for our town

Raw sewerage in the streets again

and it does not seem to be getting resolved,” said a concerned citizen.

Lephalale Municipality spokesperson, Valerie Cilliers, spoke to eNCA.com last week and was quoted as saying: “the municipality regrets the decision taken under pressure to pump sewage into a nearby field and will in future refrain from doing so.”

The municipality also promised to deploy a ‘honey sucker’ truck and when queried

they confirmed that the driver completed his training on Tuesday and that the truck was operational from Wednesday.

It is understood that the municipality is struggling to maintain various broken pumps. In order to fix the pumps they need to get rid of the sewage – as the truck has not been operational, the municipality took a decision to pump the sewage out into fields.

DA ward councillor Sybil Nieuwoudt says that while she understands that the sewage must first be removed before the mainte-nance crew can get to the pumps, the honey sucker truck in question has not been in use for some time.

Northern News has reported on the pres-sures the influx of residents has had on the town’s sewage system. In 2012, the then municipal manager Bob Naidoo said that R5-million was spent on upgrading the pump stations. He also said, in January 2014, that plans were in place to upgrade and expand the sewage system at the Paarl plant.

Following the article ‘Complaint laid against the municipality’ in the 17 October issue of Northern News, which was revealed that the Lepha-lale municipality was pumping sewage into nearby fields in residential areas, it seems that the issue has still not been resolved.

Victory as court rules in favour of municipalityThe North Gauteng High Court ruled in favour of the Mogalakwena Municipality against the case brought by the Department of Corporative Governance, Human Settle-ments and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA).

CoGHSTA challenged the appointment of the Mogalakwena municipal manager Willy Kekana, planning and developmental ser-vices manager Mokopane Letsoalo and chief financial officer Malope Tshesane. CoGHSTA lost the case with costs.

In June the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in Limpopo also went to Labour Court challenging the ap-pointment of the above mentioned managers and they also lost with costs.

The three men were appointed at a spe-cial council meeting on 21 July.

“We wish to take this opportunity to remind the public in general that after the appointment the Provincial Government had used SAMWU through its Provincial secretary to raise objection and dispute the appointments,” Mogalakwena Residents As-sociation (MRA) spokesperson Thintha Mok-honoana said. “It became clear that the Pro-vincial Government is bitter about the prog-ress made in the municipality, their interests are clear with regards to our municipality is just to protect those implicated by the KPMG Report,” he stated.

CoGHSTA has lost with punitive to the tune of over R1 million which includes the cost of the two counsel, the senior and junior counsel respectively. Thus far CoGHSTA has lost three cases, one against the MRA to put the municipality under administration in March and two cases against the municipal-ity.

“Once the costs of this cases lost by CoGHSTA are taxed, it will come to millions which should have been used to provide services to the communities which they are failing in this respect,” the Mogalakwena Municipality said in a statement released by the municipal managers’ office. “The provincial government has just came out of ICU (administration), they should focus on getting the foot on the ground and leave Mogalakwena municipality as operations are running smoothly in the municipality.”

“It has been over five months the com-munity of Mogalakwena have been awaiting for CoGHSTA MEC Mme Mmakoma Makhur-upetje to take steps on the councillors who have put their hands in the cookie jar follow-ing the investigations of the KPMG report,” the statement read.

SAPS nab dagga suspects

Mokopane police in cooperation with the traffic department confiscated a huge amount of dagga last week Friday during “operation duty calls”. They also arrested two women and a man in whose vehicles the dagga was found. The three appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were kept in custody until 29 October for their next appearance. Above is the police in action confiscating a huge amount of dagga during 'Operation Duty Calls.'

Adolescent drugged and rapedLephalale police are looking for a 21-year-old man who allegedly drugged and raped his 14-year-old ‘girlfriend’, police spokes-person, Frans Makoena told Northern News.

The girl accused the man of also taking pornographic photos of her and posting it on the social network, Facebook.

According Mokoena this girl was not the only victim. There are more people involved, but police are confident that they will soon have the suspect in custody.

Three rapists, Papi Johannes Ndimeng (26), Mpho Johannes Sean and his twin brother Mphoyana Sean (27) appeared in the Leph-alale Magistrate’s court last Thursday where they were each sentenced to 20 years’ in imprisonment for raping a young woman.

Parole will only be considered after each one has completed seven years of their 20 year sentences.

The three drove past a girl hitch hiking when they picked her up. The victim wanted a lift from Shongoane 2 to Shongoane 3. They drove past the girl’s village along the Sandalina road where they took her into the bush and raped her.

Two of the tree suspects, the third was taken to Modimolle by the organised crime unit to determine whether he could be linked to other cases.

Robbers stab man in faceOn Sunday night a young man was brutally attacked on his way home from work. Two men allegedly approached him and de-manded his valuables.

He refused and put in his pocket upon which a fight broke out. His assailants grabbed a broken bottle and stabbed the victim in his face before running off. The CPF implored the community to ensure young children are out of the streets after dark and recommended that night-shift workers walk in groups when they go out at night.

- Martie Pretorius

’n Duidelike onbekende skoenspoor is by die woning waar daar ingebreek is gevind.

Over the past few weeks there has been an increase in vehicles that drive in for fuel, ask for the amount to be put in and then drive away without paying. The fuel stations then makes a case at the Police Station and it is usually noted that false number plates have been fitted and criminals cannot be traced.

On Friday 17 October the Mokopane SAPS Station Commander, Col. Lucas Mog-waneng and the CPF chairman Andy Goetsch invited managers from all the various local fuel stations to a meeting to discuss this problem. They advised the managers that for a start, at night all customers wanting fuel will have to pay first before filling up.

If paying via credit card the card is first to be given and the number plates will be

Theft at fuel stations in Mokopaneverified with the license disk on the vehicle windscreen. In some cases the driver might be asked to show his driver’s license to make a positive identification.

Please take note also that when a cus-tomer purchase fuel with a credit card, the station will not be able to fill large or many containers. The reason for this is that when a credit-, fleet- or petrol card is stolen that the criminal knows that as soon as the owner takes note that his card is missing, the card will be stopped. Therefore they try to steal as much fuel as possible at once.

If containers are required to be filed with a credit card please arrange with the management beforehand, within normal business hours.

With the influx of new business and mining opportunities in and around the Mokopane area, several community groups decided to merge into one strong organisation to ensure that the benefits of these investments reach ground level.

“The idea behind the formation of the Mahwelereng Residents Association (MRA) is to further the interests of the residents of this town,” explains MRA secretary Jeffrey Kgo-nyane. “We are a non-political organisation which aims to work with mining companies, government and key community players.”

MRA spokesperson, Thintha Mokhonoana explains that the MRA was founded in April 2014 by the late Madimetja Piet Pale, Godfrey Molekwa, Jeffrey Kgonyane and Mokhonoana after meeting with various non-profit organisations, non-government organ-isations and other community leaders.

Kgonyane explains that the MRA is the merging of various interests groups and com-munity watchdogs, including the following bodies:- Mokopane Interested Affected Community

Guarding residents’ interestsCommittee (active in the mining sector)- Landless Crisis Committee (deals with traditional leaders)- Mokopane Com-munity Organisation (active in the educa-

Pale led successful marches as a leader of the Mahwelereng community forum which raised issues of service delivery and the role of some members of the council with regards to the mining community. He played a key role in the establishing of the MRA which eventually secured a court interdict against the then-MEC for CoGHSTA, Ishmael Kgetjepe, on the implementation of Section 139.1(b) to place the municipality under administration.

The aim of the MRA is ensure that the social responsibility programmes filter down to ground level, Kgonyane explained, adding that the association is recruiting ward resi-dents to strengthen each ward with regards to representation of the MRA. “We can only engage business at large to force them to implement their social responsibility pro-grammes properly if we the mandate of the residents,” he says.

The MRA has been in the news recently when Pale was shot down on 28 June 2014 in what is suspected to be an assassination.

Wat is meer kosbaar as ’n nuwe lewe? Net so kosbaar is die verbintenis tussen ’n ma en haar pasgebore baba? So skryf Martie Pretorius.

Goeie gees heers by laaste sportddag
