PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Two steamboats le Memphis at about the same me and

headed down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. As the they traveled side by side, workers from one boat mocked the speed of the other. Remarks were exchanged, challenges were made, and a race began. As the two boats roared through the Deep South, the compe on became vicious.

One boat began to fall behind. It was running out of fuel. The workers had prepared enough coal for a normal trip, not a race. Then, one young worker tossed some of the boat’s cargo into the fire. Seeing that it burned as well as the coal, other workers began to do the same, fueling their boat with their cargo. They won the race but burned all the material they were assigned to transport.

Dear Agathians: A er all the solemni es, the Church’s liturgical cycle

returns once again to Ordinary Time. But there is nothing “ordinary” about this me. Life in our city, state, and even country, has not returned to “normal” yet. Even though we have made tremendous progress in overcoming the coronavirus, the damage of the pandemic will con nue to affect our life for quite some me.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity for us to understand what Ordinary Time is really all about. The word “ordinary” doesn’t mean commonplace, mundane, or boring. Rather, this

me is “ordinary” because it is “ordered.” It is “regular” because it’s “regulated.” Just as we use ordinal numbers to neatly list things, the weeks in Ordinary Time are numbered in a successive order to help us organize our spiritual life.

One lesson we should learn from this pandemic is how flee ng our earthly life is – and how li le control we have over it! When we race through life, we may, like the workers in the story, burn all the cargo that God has entrusted to us: family, friends, fellow parishioners, neighbors, co‐workers… Just as Ordinary Time builds on the Sundays, the Days of the Lord, culmina ng in the Solemnity of Christ the King, we should ask the Lord to “teach us to count our days aright” (Psalm 90:12) so that, firmly anchored on Christ, we may safely transport ourselves and our cargo to our final des na on.

for all the fathers in our parish, living and deceased. We will also con nue the tradi on of placing all Father’s Day inten ons on the altar for the rest of the month as a sign of our commitment to pray for our fathers. Mean What You Say Missouri is known as the “Show Me” state. There seem to

be differing points of view as to how this mo o came into existence, but today it is said to speak of a people who operate with common sense and are not easily fooled by slick‐talking or show. We would be prudent to adopt such a disposi on ourselves. To be this way is not really like St. Thomas in the Gospel when he doubts what he clearly sees right in front of him. It is more about holding ourselves to a standard explained in another mo o: “Say what you mean and mean what you say.”

If we claim to be Chris ans, disciples of the risen Jesus, then those around us should be able to tell by our ac ons. Can someone truly be a disciple of Jesus and not be a good steward of all He has given? Jesus makes himself known to us con nually in the Holy Eucharist. When we come together to break bread at Mass, Jesus shows us his love by becoming truly present to us. He is willing to show us. What are we in turn willing to show him?

Every day, Jesus calls us to respond in some way. Our response shows whether we are who we claim: his disciples. I am pre y sure Jesus is not from Missouri, but I know he is not fooled by our half‐truths and misguided inten ons. He also means what he says and says what he means. Shouldn’t his disciples do the same?

Confessing Sins

PERSPECTIVA del PÁRROCO Dos barcos de vapor salieron de Memphis

aproximadamente al mismo tiempo y se dirigieron por el río Mississippi hacia Nueva Orleans. Mientras viajaban lado a lado, los trabajadores de un barco se burlaban de la velocidad del otro. Se intercambiaron comentarios, se hicieron desa íos y comenzó una carrera. Cuando los dos barcos rugían en el sur, la competencia se volvió intensa.

Un bote comenzó a quedarse atrás. Se estaba quedando sin combustible. Los trabajadores habían preparado su iciente carbón para un viaje normal, no una carrera. Queridos Agatinos: Después de todas las solemnidades, el ciclo litúrgico de

la Iglesia vuelve una vez más al Tiempo Ordinario. Pero no hay nada “ordinario” en este momento. La vida en nuestra ciudad, estado e incluso el paıś, aún no ha vuelto a la “normalidad.” A pesar de que hemos avanzado enormemente en superar el coronavirus, el daño de la pandemia continuará afectando nuestra vida durante bastante tiempo.

Ser Lo Que Dices Missouri es conocido como el estado

Jesús se da a conocer continuamente en la Sagrada Eucaristıá. Cuando nos unimos para partir el pan en la misa, Jesús nos muestra su amor al estar realmente presente para nosotros. El está dispuesto a mostrarnos. ¿Qué estamos dispuestos a mostrarle?

Confesando Pecados Si voy al Sacramento de la Penitencia

y termino repitiendo los mismos pecados, ¿eso signi ica que no tengo una intención lo su icientemente fuerte como para enmendar mi vida?

Hay una expresión popular que dice: “Sé paciente. ¡Dios aún no ha terminado conmigo!” Crecer en la fe y la santidad es un proyecto continuo que dura toda la vida, y nuestra lucha con el pecado está en el centro de todo. Como dice San Pablo, el bien que pretende hacer, no lo hace. ¡El mal que no pretende hacer, lo hace! No siempre es una falta de intención, sino a menudo es la seducción del mal lo que di iculta el cambio. Cuando confesamos nuestros pecados, debemos venir con un corazón totalmente contrito. Necesita re lexionar sobre sus verdaderos sentimientos hacia sus

acciones antes de acercarse al sacramento. Después de la confesión, hay estrategias que puede hacer para evitar caer en las mismas trampas de pecado. Primero, ore y busque fuerza y perseverancia a través de múltiples sacramentos, trabajo caritativo y sacri icio personal. Segundo, evite las ocasiones de pecado en las que puede fallar o ser tentado.
