S U M M A RYWorking in pairs, students identify the different parts of speech in sentences. They write a paragraph or short essay about a community location or project. Then students pick a sentence from their writing and assign a specific TagTile® for each part of speech. For example, verbs = Go Forward 1, nouns = Go Right, adjectives = Make a U-turn, and so on. They have KUBO read the tiles for each sentence and then execute the sentence.
B E F O R E H A N D Students should understand how to use the KUBO Coding and KUBO Coding+ TagTiles. Students should also understand how to create and execute a function.
R E S O U R C E S• 1 KUBO robot per pair, fully charged
• 1 set of KUBO Coding TagTiles
• 1 set of KUBO Coding+ TagTiles
• Paper and writing utensil (pen, marker, crayon, or colored pencil)
C R O S S - C U R R I C U L A R L I N K S• Math: Students assign points to each part of speech. They create sentences with a specific point value.
Utilize negative numbers, fractions, and decimals for an added challenge.

• Science/STEAM: Students write about a wildlife habitat, nature park, or conservation area. Students include observations they might have made about wildlife, such as in the Solution Example section.
E X T E N S I O N A C T I V I T I E S• Students use subroutines to identify independent clauses.
• Students use two or three tiles to symbolize more complex parts of speech (such as prepositions, clauses, conjunctions, and so on) so they can diagram complete sentences.
• After one group of students has matched KUBO’s movements to a sentence, another group tries to guess which sentence KUBO is executing.
S O L U T I O N E X A M P L EExample: The toad ate the fat fly.
• Verbs = Go Forward 1, nouns = Go Right, adjectives = Make a U-turn
Place the following code in a function:
• Go Right, Go Forward 1, Make a U-turn, Go Right
