Most students choose medicine because theyhave a fascination with science, a curiosityabout the workings of the human body anda desire to help others.
Medicine
Some applicants may have rst-hand
experience o illness and that experience has
inspired them to practice medicine.
Whatever the reason, a career in medicine
requires a dedication to lie-long learning,
a passionate and inquisitive mind, and acompassionate heart. Students will learn
amazing things and will be challenged. They
will also have the satisaction o knowing that
they can make a dierence.
Medicine is a highly respected proession
and it is a privilege to join the ranks o those
who have achieved so much in service to
humanity. But, medicine is not an easy career
choice. The hours are long and the work will
oten be emotionally dicult. It requires years
o education and preparation beore students
can achieve the specialist qualication that
will allow them to ully practice as a doctor.But, there are many rewards.

with a large variety o career options, both
nationally and internationally. Rural Australia
depends upon people who live and work
outside the city and suburbs, and there are
pathways designed or students with aninterest in rural practice. Whether a student
wants to become a general practitioner or a
general surgeon, the University o Adelaide

(MBBS) program will qualiy students to
pursue these specialties, and many others,
ater graduation. The progression o medical
knowledge depends upon research, and the
University o Adelaide can assist students
whose interests lie in becoming a clinical
researcher. The MBBS program is designed
to help students achieve their specic goals.
The medical program at the University oAdelaide is the third oldest in Australia with

Commonwealth supported places inthe Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor ofSurgery program
There are three types o Commonwealthsupported places (CSPs) in the Bachelor o
Medicine/Bachelor o Surgery program:
1. standard place
2. unbonded medical place
3. Bonded Medical Place (BMP)/Medical
Rural Bonded Scholarships (MRBS).
Both the BMP and the MRBS require the
student to enter into a contract with the
Australian Government.

About the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery
The MBBS program consists o three major
streams refecting the core elements o medicalpractice:
1. Scientic Basis o Medicine
2. Clinical Practice
3. Medical Proessional and PersonalDevelopment.
A major emphasis is placed on proessionalism,communication and clinical reasoning, as well asthe practice o evidence-based and preventativemedicine.
Case-based, small-group learning (CBL) is thedominant learning mode during the early yearso the curriculum. Learning is structured aroundclinical cases o the most common and importantdiseases. Lectures in the medical disciplines
such as pathology, anatomy, physiology andpharmacology are careully staged throughout theCBL cases. In Year 1, students will also undertaketwo semesters o Fundamentals o BiomedicalScience, a course specically designed or medicalstudents.

State-of-the-art clinical skills facilityThe Robin Warren Clinical Skills Laboratory
is a $2.5 million acility or medical and
nursing students. The contemporary and
versatile layout, which mirrors the concept
o the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, eatures
single-bed mini wards that are ully
equipped as i they were real hospital wards.
First and second-year medical students use
the acility to learn how to talk to patients,
take their histories, and develop essential
clinical reasoning skills. Students interact
with surrogate patientstrained actors
posing as patients. Students in later years
o the program oten return to practice skills
in the laboratory.
The clinical skills laboratory is an integral
part o teaching, and enables students
to practise and learn the undamentals o
medical consulting in a sae and non-
threatening environment.
Career opportunities
Ater graduation and beore being admitted to ullregistration as a medical practitioner in Australia,graduates must serve at least twelve months as anintern in an approved hospital.
Ater successully completing the internship andobtaining ull registration to practice, students willneed to make a career decision about enteringa training program oered by a proessionalcollege. There are a wide range o opportunitiesand students may choose to pursue a career inareas such as general practice, surgery, medicineor public health. They may choose to work in arural area o Australia, or, as a university clinicalacademic, they may choose to combine clinicalpractice with research and education.
MBBS graduates rom the University o Adelaideare now working in a diverse range o elds or havebegun additional study in specialisations such aspsychiatry, ophthalmology or paediatrics. Potentialcareer paths will become apparent as you progressthrough the program.
The Clinical Skills and Medical Proessional andPersonal Development courses begin in Week 1and assist students to acquire the skills requiredor eective clinical practice. The clinical practice
tutorials in Years 1 and 2 are led by senior cliniciansin a state-o-the-art clinical skills acility. In Year 3,clinical skills training is conducted primarily in thepublic teaching hospitals.
Students will then bring this core learning to theirclinical placements in Years 46. These placementswill be held in a wide range o organisations,including the public teaching hospitals and thebroader medical and health community.
There are some clinical placements thatall students must take, but there are alsoopportunities or students to choose rom a rangeo electives, including the option o undertaking
Year 5 in a rural setting.
Year 6 is ocused on what students need toknow or their internship. The major barrier exam
is conducted at the end o Year 5 and, with thepressure o exams reduced, students can ocus ontheir clinical practice and proessional development.

Years 13While these years have traditionally been labelledas pre-clinical years, new educational practicesmake this term obsolete. Students learning will bestimulated by clinical cases and students will startlearning clinical skills and working with surrogatepatients rom the rst week o the program.Students will have access to state-o-the artanatomy, bioskills and clinical skills laboratories.While there are lectures, much learning will occur insmall group tutorials.
The ollowing three courses orm the oundation othe rst three years. They provide opportunities tolearn the core knowledge that will allow studentsto advance and ully participate in the clinicalattachments oered in Years 46.
Clinical Practice: hands-on tutorials in adedicated clinical skills laboratory, oten workingwith surrogate patients. In Year 3 studentsundertake a ull day o clinical skills study in a
hospital setting. When students start their clinicalattachments in Year 4, they will already have gainedamiliarity with hospital protocol.
Scientifc Basis o Medicine: learning about thescience that underpins the practice o medicine.
Medical Proessional and Personal Practice:proessionalism, ethics, communication, leadership:all essential to quality medical practice.
Each year level also has additional courses toassist students as they progress through theclinical cases that are core to the Years 13program.

Years 46The program in Years 46 is an exciting mix oplacements in teaching hospitals and in communitysettings. Students may choose to take the entireth year in a rural area where they can ndthemselves helping to deliver a baby and thenassisting a patient to take up a more healthyliestyle. The Medical and Scientic Attachmentsare three-week elective placements that includeopportunities to explore speciality areas as diverseas oncology, dermatology, geriatrics, cardiologyor gastroenterology. Between Years 5 and 6,there is the prospect o an overseas or interstateattachment. Year 6 ocuses on preparing studentsto undertake their internship year.

Domestic students
There are two distinct parts to the
application process.
The rst is an application to sit the
Undergraduate Medicine and Health
Sciences Admission Test (UMAT). Applicants
must register to sit the UMAT beore the
application closing date: or dates please

The second is the SATAC application.Applicants who have registered with UMAT
must lodge their SATAC application by 27
September 2013. They will be asked to enter
their UMAT identication number when they
lodge their application on SATACs UniWeb:www.satac.edu.au/uniweb
International students studying
in Australia
All international applicants must submit
a ormal application online via www.
international.adelaide.edu.au/apply/
application
The online application also serves as the
registration to sit the PQA and students will
be prompted to select the relevant PQA test
venue when applying.
Application and payments must be
submitted prior to the 30 June 2013.
Students who have not yet completed their
current qualication will still be required to
apply by this date. Late submissions will not

that any student studying or an Australian

What if I dont get in?
Entry to the MBBS program is highly
competitive with only a small portion o
applicants admitted to the degree. Applicants
are encouraged to consider alternative
programs when applying or Bachelor o
Medicine/Bachelor o Surgery, such as the
Bachelor o Health Sciences.

Tertiary transfer pathway(domestic students only)
Only a limited number o places are available
to applicants studying the rst or second year
o an undergraduate degree at the University
o Adelaide and who do not have any other
tertiary record (students are ineligible to apply
i they have studied at another university).
All tertiary transer applicants must meet the
subject prerequisites.
Students studying at a later stage are noteligible and should consider graduate
medicine programs oered at other
universities.
Rural Background Entry pathway(domestic students only)
Applicants who have lived at least ve years
in an area with an Australian Standard
Geographic Classication Remoteness
Areas (ASGC-RA) o AGS-RA 25 since
beginning primary school are eligible to
apply under the Rural Background Entry

Preparing for studyBeore attending clinical placement, students
must provide proo o clearance in the
ollowing areas. Without these clearances
you will not be allowed to attend clinical
placements and will be at risk o not being
able to complete your program, as clinical
placements are compulsory components.

Prescribed Communicable Infections
(PCI) clearanceProo o immunisation must be obtained by
students in programs that include a clinical
component. Students who undertake
clinical placements, internships or research
projects involving children or people who
are ill, elderly or vulnerable are required to
demonstrate Prescribed Communicable
Inections (PCI) clearance by producing a
PCI Screening Notication obtained through
a test administered by a GP or recognised
medical provider.

Tuberculosis (TB) screening
It is a South Australian Government
requirement that all students demonstrate
clearance or tuberculosis inection prior
to any clinical placement. This clearance
is conducted by the South AustralianTuberculosis Services (SATB).
Criminal history checks
Students who undertake clinical placements,
internships or research projects involving
children or people who are ill, elderly or
vulnerable are required to demonstrate a
satisactory criminal history clearance. This
is undertaken by the Screening Unit o the
SA Department or Communities and Social
Inclusion (DCSI) upon application submitted
via Australia Post.
DCSI will assess each students criminal
record and i clear will provide the student
with a clearance certicate and the University
with conrmation o clearance.
Students are encouraged to obtain a Criminal
History Clearance certicate as soon as
possible upon commencing Year 1 o the
program.
International students are required to obtain a
certicate rom their home country.
First Aid requirements
Students must provide evidence that
they hold a current valid Senior First Aid/
CPR certicate prior to commencing inthe Bachelor o Medicine and Bachelor o
Surgery (MBBS) program.
The preerred certicates are Senior First
Aid certicates issued by members o the
Australian Resuscitation Council.
Student registration
Students undertaking a program including
clinical placement at a hospital or other
health acility require student registration with
the relevant National Board. This process
is undertaken by AHPRA (Australian Health
Practitioners Regulation Agency).
There is no ee or student registration.
This is completed on the enrolment o the
student in their program and does not require
action by the student. The student will be
advised when they have been registered.
Rural placementsEnrolment in the Undergraduate Degree o
Bachelor o Medicine/Bachelor o Surgery at
The University o Adelaide requires students
to undertake rural clinical placements.
Commonwealth supported students (in
both bonded and unbonded places) need
to complete our weeks o rural placements
beore graduation, with 25% o students
required to complete one year o clinical
training in a rural site. I these places are not
lled by students voluntarily, all students in
Commonwealth supported places will beincluded in a random ballot to be allocated to
one o these year-long rural placements.

About the schoolsThe interdisciplinary nature o the MBBS
program brings together the expertise
o teachers and clinicians rom the
Schools o Medicine, Population Health,
Medical Sciences, and Paediatrics and
Reproductive Health.
The School o Medicine has large

the Disciplines o Acute Care Medicine,

HECS Higher Education LoanProgram (HECS-HELP)
HECS-HELP assists eligible Commonwealth
supported students to pay their student

Student Services and Amenities Fee
Students are charged an annual Student
Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) to
assist with the unding o student services
and amenities at the University.

deer this ee to an SA-HELP loan. Further

international studentsAll international students undertaking an
Australian Year 12 program are required to
achieve a Pass grade or above in one o the
approved English as a Second Language
or an English language subject. I a student
does not pass the English language subject
then alternative options, such as an acceptable
English language prociency test result, may
