This month we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the extraordinary musician: the late conductor Sergiu Celibidache. The Romanian maestro was famous for his lack of interest in making recordings and we hope you will find this series of historical recordings made by Romanian Radio particularly gratifying. Music critic Savio Lau was at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre for Celibidache’s three Hong Kong concerts in 1992. He shares on p. 23 his fondness of Celibidache’s recordings.

Last month, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Debussy. This month we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the perhaps lesser well-known, yet no less original American composer John Cage.

Cage brought a completely new perception to music. One of his most thought-provoking and well-known works is perhaps 4’33” (Four minutes and thirty-three seconds), which is performed in silence – the piece is created from the ambient noise within the time period of the work. Think about it, anyone, musician or non-musician can perform the piece, and each interpretation is unique!

Cage also expanded the sonic vocabulary of music, by exploring unconventional ways to play an instrument. One of his ground-breaking inventions was the prepared piano. By putting different objects between or onto the strings and the hammers, Cage created a new sound horizon for the instrument. It could be a muffled sound, a rattling sound, a metallic sound… the possibilities are endless. And talking about possibilities, his music language has naturally allowed much room for the active participation of ‘chance’ and ‘indeterminacy’.

This month, Radio 4 has scheduled two concerts on Live on Four featuring John Cage’s music. In addition, on Morning Call (Wednesdays at 9:20am) and Four For Classics (in Cantonese, Mondays at 4:15pm), you can also hear performers and academics share their thoughts on John Cage. On p. 6, you can discover more about this great avant-garde composer with an article written by Calvin Lai, and on p. 9 is a transcription of an interview Jonathan Douglas had with Margaret Leng Tan, Cage’s mentee.

On the subject of new music, this month we continue to celebrate the art of music creativity and bring into focus Hong Kong composers in the new series entitled Hong Kong’s Modern Sound (in Cantonese). Tang Lok-yin will introduce to you composers who have helped to mould Hong Kong’s musical landscape over the past 50 years.

上月是德布西出生一百五十週年,本月輪到另一位別樹一格的作曲家─和崔烈比德奇一樣出生於1912年的基治。

基治為音樂帶來全新面貌。他其中一首最能刺激思維,並可能是最著名的作品,是全曲沒有音符的《4分33秒》。理論上,這是全球最多人能夠「演出」的作品,而且每個演繹版本都不同。

基治亦大大擴闊了音響的可能性。在他的作品中,好些樂器有了新的演奏方法,其中一個例子是「預置鋼琴」:在鋼琴的琴弦或琴槌上放置不同的物件可產生不同的音響─悶響、嘎嘎聲、富金屬性的聲音⋯⋯有無盡的可能性。而提到可能性,基治對音樂的簇新體會,更將音樂當中的「機遇性」和「不定性」盡情發揮。

9月份,第四台音樂會將送上兩場特備演出以向基治致意。此外,在星期一下午4時15分和星期三早上9時20分,你可分別在愛樂同盟和清晨妙韻(英語節目)中,收聽到音樂家和學者分享對基治的感受。在第6頁,你亦可以透過由賴建群所寫的文章,進一步了解這位顯赫的前衛作曲家。另外,基治是陳靈的導師,杜格尊特別與她做了一個專訪(英語),刊於第9頁。

每張相片背後都有一個故事。

這張照片攝於美國作曲家基治逝世前十日,當時一班音樂家朋友拍攝完造型照之後,在攝影工作室舉行了一個驚喜派對,為基治慶祝八十大壽。攝影師史柏尼奧狄斯即興邀請基治拍張獨照,老人家亦欣然答應。

事隔二十年,攝影師告訴我,拍攝當日的情景仍歷歷在目。 派對的帽子配上基治的微笑,在鏡頭裡顯得「奇怪又精彩」。 這大概也概括了基治在不少人心中的形象。

若不知道基治的來歷,你可能想不到相片中的和善老人, 曾經帶給藝術界何等震憾!

4’33’’提到基治,立刻會想起他的代表作《4’33’’》(即「四分三十三秒」的意思)。原曲題獻給鋼琴家杜多(David Tudor),共分三個樂章。樂譜上沒有任何音符,鋼琴家以關上或打開琴蓋來顯示樂章的開始和終結。樂曲無聲,卻為聽眾提供了一個長四分三十三秒的寧靜環境。在期待與等候中,聽眾重新發現原本弱不可聞、偶然而發的一切聲響。基治提倡「所有聲音皆是音樂」,《4’33’’》正是所有「音樂」的總匯,是「隨機音樂」的極致表達。

「扻頭埋牆」也在所不惜基治生於1912年,三十年代,當時二十出頭的他決心要作曲。對他影響深遠的老師有兩位,包括美國前衛音樂的鼻祖高維爾(Henry Cowell),以及剛從奧地利移居美國的十二音列大師荀伯克(Arnold Schoenberg)。高維爾的音樂充滿實驗意味,例如發掘傳統樂器的新聲響、非常規的演奏法、電子聲音運用、研究世界各地的音樂文化等,都使基治大開眼界;荀伯克對基治的影響同樣深遠,更堅定了基治要破舊立新的決心!基治日後回憶,自己在荀氏門下深造兩年,卻了解到自己對和聲全無興趣。在荀伯克眼中,不懂和聲則不會作曲,他對基治說:「這樣下去,你必會碰壁,無法超越。」基治的回應卻是「扻頭埋牆」也在所不惜:「I’ll beat my head against that wall」。

鋼琴中的外物基治有「扻頭埋牆」的覺悟,卻不見得事事要弄得頭破血流。在傳統樂壇之外,他發掘新的表達形式、新的聲響,將音樂由傳統中解放,也吸引了一批支持者。他的一大發明是「預置鋼琴」(prepared piano)。當年他為華盛頓的舞團擔任鋼琴伴奏,有次演出,他想在音樂部份加入敲擊元素,嘗試在琴弦上放上一個金屬盤子,彈奏出轟轟作響、帶有敲擊風味的古怪琴音。這也開始了他為鋼琴「加料」的習慣,在琴弦上放上木片、膠粒、湯匙、螺絲等不同物件。每次演奏時,這些「外物」干擾發聲、甚至游走於琴弦之間,使演奏時充滿不確定的因素,卻又帶來獨特的音色和氣氛。

禪、機遇在四十年代,基治遇到禪學權威鈴木大拙,之後更成為禪宗追隨者。在他眼中,與其遵循複雜的章法,創作一些突顯個人能力和品味的作品,倒不如回歸日常的聲音之中,親身體驗,發掘另一意境。這種不刻意尋求秩序、不要造作的想法,本身就充滿禪意,也成為基治發展「隨機音樂」的契機。之前提到的《4’33’’》、同時開動十二部收音機並隨意轉台的《第四想像的風景》、以易經問卦方式尋求演奏方向的《變化的音樂》,這些作品同樣放棄作曲家的全權控制,都是「隨機音樂」的好例子。音樂進行中毫無目的?也不一定!過程中其實令很多有心人去思考,再次留意音樂的本質。

奇妙的平衡在不少人眼中,基治離經叛道,為樂壇帶來震撼。面對別人的批評耻笑,他卻能從容以對、平和解釋,像一位傳�士。在網上看過一段1960年的電視片段,當時基治應邀到CBS的遊戲節目,演出《水與行走》。此曲的主要「樂器」是日常生活中各樣載水的容器,包括酒樽、水煲、 浴缸、攪拌機⋯⋯他演奏時則要行走於各物件之間,樂曲因而得名。現場觀眾知道樂器名單已經立刻爆笑,基治卻能從容以對,主持人以為他在學院�授「實驗聲響」,基治認真地輕輕糾正: 「是實驗音樂(才對)。」主持人之後又煞有介事地問:「觀眾若覺得可笑,他們可以笑嗎?」基治回應:「當然可以。我喜歡笑聲多於淚水」。雖然他的音樂叫很多人不敢恭維,但配上作曲家優雅、堅定、又有點幽默的特質,卻有一種奇妙的平衡,充滿魅力。

J : Can I ask you first about your interest in the prepared piano? Were

you already interested and playing it when you first met John

Cage?

M : Yes. Actually I just started to get my feet wet in it because I was

preparing a programme back in 1981 of Western composers

who had been influenced by Asian cultures, aesthetics, and

philosophy. I started with Debussy and worked my way up to

Cage and Messiaen. With Cage everyone was reminded of the

gamelan. I felt that way very strongly, too, that this music had an

Asiatic quality to it, so that’s how I got interested in the prepared

piano and John Cage. And that’s how I met him. I had put together

a Song and Dance act with my dancer friend Marion d’Cruz who

had started spontaneously to dance to Cage’s music as I was

practising it. So we put together this Song and Dance act where

she would dance to the piano works of Cage and we thought he

should see it. To cut a long story short he fell in love with us, and

even sent us a mesostic which are poems with our names forming

the central spine of the poem. That’s how my relationship with

Cage started: when he heard us perform his music.

John Cage liked very much what we did although he had a very

circumscribed taste in dance because of his long time connection

with Merce Cunningham. If I’d known that I probably wouldn’t

have the nerve to call him to see our act. But not knowing that

was a classic case of fools rushing in where angels fear to tread! I

didn’t know how famous he was and I didn’t know how defined

his taste in dance was. Knowing all these things I would never

have called him up so it’s good to be ignorant in some cases!

J : Can I just ask you a bit about prepared piano. A lot of the quality,

the sound world of the prepared piano depends on how you

prepare it, doesn’t it?

M : Absolutely, and the piano can be very badly or very beautifully

prepared. It just happened that John Cage loved the way I prepared

the piano.

J : How do you prepare the piano?

M : It’s defined by Cage what notes to prepare, what materials to

prepare these notes with, but at the same time each piece has

a unique preparation. The distances are all specified from the

dampers to a highly detailed degree but on the other hand you

can’t take them literally because, depending on the size of the

piano you are playing, these measurements don’t necessarily

apply. So you have to use your ear and taste to a great extent. John

Cage happened to like the way I prepared it which means he liked

my taste of what I chose in terms of placement of the objects.

Singapore-born pianist Margaret Leng Tan has established herself as a major force in the

American avant-garde. She favours music that confronts and defies the established boundaries

of the piano and this led her to John Cage. There was an active collaboration between Cage

and Tan that lasted from 1981 to his death in 1992. Jonathan Douglas interviewed Margaret

Leng Tan and discussed her memories of John Cage.

This month, Radio 4 has scheduled two concerts on Live on

Four (8/9 and 15/9 at 8pm) featuring John Cage’s music. In

addition, you can listen to the interview of Margaret Leng Tan on

Morning Call (Wednesdays at 9:20am) throughout September.

鋼琴家陳靈以演繹基治的音樂聞名樂壇。9月份逢星期三早上 9時20分,「清晨妙韻」(英語節目)會播出陳靈的有關訪問。

J : What kind of objects would they be mainly?

M : They would be prepared with nuts, bolts and screws, metal

preparations, and then the other sound qualities you prepare

with wood, bamboo or felt or rubber. All these preparations are

what John Cage had used, because it was his intention to create

a percussion orchestra under the control of a single player. Those

are his words not mine.

J : What was he like as a person?

M : He was a very kind man, always very soft spoken and gentle, with

a mischievous sense of humour. Later in life people respected

him so much that they kind of treated him like a saint or a holy

man, which I think he deserved to be treated that way with such

deference and respect but he was really very much of this world,

not the other world. He had very definite ideas about things, and

definite principles by which he lived. Everybody should read his

book, Silence, because it’s wonderful insight into Cage’s thinking

and I don’t think you can really understand Cage’s music without

understanding the philosophy behind his music. Later in life he

would get so tired of answering questions, because people would

always ask the same questions, he would say ‘please read my

books, you will find all the answers there.’

J : Can you tell us about the last memory of him?

M : My last memory was that day I went to work with him on the piece

he had made for me. It was called One, meaning a work for solo

performer. I went to discuss that with him because I had made

several performances of different versions which I was never quite

satisfied with. It was one of those indeterminate performances

where the performer was made the core creator, where you have

a great deal of creative input into the piece, and he felt that I had

structured it too much. Then I realised that it wasn’t an invitation

in anarchy, because John didn’t believe that people should treat

work irresponsibly, he felt that people should approach his music,

even his indeterminate scores when his performers become core

creator, seriously. You apply a discipline to a discipline, which

is comparable to what you would do for through-composed

music....

J : But it requires a certain level of trust somehow, doesn’t it?

M : It implies a tremendous leap of faith in the performer, and trust

that you wouldn’t treat this faith he put into you by betraying it by

being irresponsible and not preparing the material. Because what

I needed to do is to know the material so well that I could virtually

go to each piano, grab any score that came to hand and do it,

and at the same time perform it with utter freedom, time, and

responsibility. That was my last discussion with Cage so he never

got to hear the results of that meeting but I don’t think it really

matters because he felt I had really understood what he wanted

from me.

J : Does it seem a long time ago, 20 years?

M : No it doesn’t. It seems so recent, but we are living in a time where

time has escalated on us exponentially, with the advent of the

internet and everything else.

J : You must still miss him I suppose?

M : I think of him and of things he said to me, that over time have

clarified themselves. Very often he would say things to me that

were very simple, but were also deeply profound, and it has taken

me all this time to realise the different levels of meaning.

In September, Sunday Opera offers masterpieces of exceptional merit amongst the most popular works on the Italian, French, German and Russian repertoire.

2 September : Puccini’s Manon Lescaut The phenomenal success of Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) as a composer of farcical operettas prevented him from fulfilling his ambition to be recognized as a respectable serious composer. It was not until the final years of his life that he was able to concentrate on producing an opera of lasting artistic merit and came very close to realizing his life-long ambition.

Unfortunately, Offenbach died before he could complete the orchestration of Les contes d’Hoffmann. The work was prepared for production at the Paris Opéra Comique by Ernest Guiraud. The première took place four months after the composer’s funeral.

The poet E.T.A. Hoffmann’s infatuation for the prima donna Stella forms the prologue and epilogue of the opera, while each of the three central acts describes his unfortunate love affairs respectively with Olympia the mechanical doll, Giulietta the Venetian courtesan, and Antonia the consumptive singer, each time frustrated by the same demonic figure that crosses his fate.

Our recording boasts of a superb cast consisting of American diva Beverly Sills in all four soprano lead roles, tenor Stuart Burrows in the role of the protagonist Hoffmann, and bass Norman Triegle as the four villains. The John Alldis Choir and the London Symphony Orchestra appears under the baton of Julius Rudel.

16 September : Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)

This is the third opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) and his first major international success. It was given its première in 1893 at Turin’s Teatro Regio.

The subject was taken from the novel The Story of the Chevalier des Grieux by Abbé Prevost, which also inspired the French composer Jules Massenet to write an opera named Manon, a masterpiece that had had its first performance just a few years earlier at the Opéra Comique of Paris with resounding success. Defending his decision to take risks of such an immediate comparison, Puccini pointed out that ‘Massenet treated the subject as a Frenchmen, with refinement and grace. I shall treat it as an Italian, with desperate passion.’

Soprano Mirella Freni sings the role of the conquettish Manon Lescaut, who is torn between her love for the young student Des Grieux, sung by tenor Luciano Pavarotti, and the luxury provided by old Geronte, baritone Giuseppe Taddei. The tragedy ends with Manon’s deportation to Louisiana, where she dies in the arms of her lover. The performance is by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by James Levine.

9 September : Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann)

The unprecedented popularity of Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) is due in part to the extraordinary brilliance in the fusion of humour in music and in part to the tuneful and vocally electrifying arias, duets and ensembles. Rossini and his librettist Cesare Sterbini created a fast moving and tongue-twisting comedy out of Beaumarchais’s witty satirical play with great vitality, virtuosity and distinct characterization.

Rossini’s operas, both comic and serious, were written with such amazing speed and so successful with the box-office that he was able to retire at the age of 37 after creating some 40 works for the stage. He lived for a further 39 years mainly in Paris, enjoying a lavish lifestyle, keeping a mistress, and indulging in fine food and wine.

Our international cast boasts of baritone Roberto Servile in the title role, with tenor Ramón Vargas and mezzo-soprano Sonia Ganassi as the delectable young lovers. Will Humburg conducts the Hungarian Radio Chorus and the Failoni Chamber Orchestra of Budapest.

23 September : Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman)

In the story, a sea captain is condemned by the devil to sail the seas till the Day of Judgment, unless he can find a woman who loves him until death. He falls in love with Senta, who proves her faithfulness and reverses the devil’s curse.

Bass-baritone George London and soprano Leonie Rysanek are the protagonists in our recording. They sing with the Chorus and Orchestra of The Royal Opera at Covent Garden, conducted by Antal Doráti.

In his fourth opera, Der fliegende Holländer, Richard Wagner (1813-1883) at last found his true voice. It is a work of passionate genius in which the composer’s basic aesthetic principles and techniques, though still not yet fully mature, are displayed with encouraging results. The opera’s main themes: a curse, redemption, and the desire for love unto death, remain fundamental to all his music dramas thenceforth.

Based on a 15th-century Nordic fable as retold by the poet Heinrich Heine in one of his novels, the story of Der fliegende Holländer was taken up by Wagner and he wrote the libretto in 1841 and composed the music in six weeks in the spring of 1842.

One of the great achievements of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and his best-known work for the operatic stage, Eugene Onegin (Yevgény Onégin) is based on a verse narrative by Alexander Pushkin, with a libretto written by the composer in collaboration with Konstantin Shilovsky.

Completed in 1878, this opera tells the story of a young aristocrat, well educated, egoistical, and fashionable, but bored with the world in general, who rejects the sincere affection of a country girl of modest social status, only to find himself passionately in love with her years later when she is married to a nobleman of high ranking. She rejects him, though she confesses that she still loves him.

The score contains several extended scenes which have long become concert favourites. These include Tatyana’s letter scene, Onegin’s rejection of Tatyana, Lensky’s tragic aria before his fatal duel with Onegin, and the brilliant orchestral waltz and polonaise scenes.

Our cast has baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky singing the title role, soprano Nuccia Focile as Tatyana, and tenor Neil Shicoff as Lensky. Semyon Bychkov conducts the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir and Orchestre de Paris.

3/9 - 7/9 : Kitty Chan 陳婉華 (Cantonese 粵語)A lawyer by profession, Kitty Chan regards music as the love of her life. She studied piano at an early age and has explored many different instruments later, with distinguished teachers. Because of music, Kitty Chan has made a lot of friends. When she was studying in Canada, she liked to practice the piano during her free time. Once, a student walked pass and was attracted by her playing. The student even entered her practice room and they started chatting. The student was the late actress Jacqueline Law. Later on, Kitty even became the piano teacher of the renowned pop singer Elisa Chan. Kitty is also passionate in nurturing young talents; pianists like Rachel Cheung and Ka Jeng Wong used to practice on her piano.

10/9 - 14/9 : David Cheung 張大衛 (Cantonese 粵語)David Cheung, who is a social worker, did not like classical music in his school years. After getting married, he heard Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by chance and immediately fell passionately in love with music; since then, he has been going to Europe to search for precious recordings, attending concerts and reading books on music. Until now, he has collected around 5000 recordings. Among his wide interest in music, he is particularly drawn to Mahler. Not only would he compare different recordings of the same work, he even traveled to Vienna to visit Mahler’s old house and tomb. Nevertheless, if David had to go to a desert island, he would bring the recording of Rostropovich and Britten playing Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata. Rostropovich stopped performing this work in public after Britten’s death, and whenever the old maestro heard this recording, tears came down his cheek. David is touched by this story as well as the beautiful melody by Schubert.

最愛的唱片 : 羅斯卓波維契和布列頓演繹舒伯特的《琶音提琴奏鳴曲》。羅斯卓波維契在布列頓離世後,便不再公開演奏這首奏鳴曲。後來,當年老的羅斯卓波維契聽到這張唱片,便會流淚。除了舒伯特優美的旋律外,張大衛更被唱片背後的故事打動。

The Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Ballet, Madeleine Onne grew up in Sweden where she used to dance to Swedish folk music. Thus, she has developed a passion for these art forms. When she was the Principal Dancer of the Royal Swedish Ballet, she worked closely with conductors; they could read each other’s thought in just a glance. She particularly enjoyed collaborating with the British conductor John Lanchbery, who was not only a brilliant conductor, but also a good arranger of ballet music. In terms of composers, Madeleine is very fond of Tchaikovsky, particularly John Cranco’s version of Onegin in which the non-ballet music of Tchaikovsky was used.

音樂與舞蹈 :成長於瑞典的區美蓮,自幼便受到瑞典的民間音樂和舞蹈影響,而熱愛這兩種藝術。在瑞典皇家歌劇院芭蕾舞團擔任首席舞蹈員時,她與樂團指揮合作無間,彼此只是交換一個眼神,便知道如何互相配合。這種音樂家和舞者的默契是十分重要的。

最愛的作曲家 : 柴可夫斯基。尤其喜愛英國編舞家克蘭科的《奧涅金》,當中改編了柴可夫斯基非為芭蕾舞而寫的作品。

24/9 - 28/9 : David Fang 方津生 (Cantonese 粵語)

Brother of Anson Chan, orthopaedic surgeon David Fang loves singing. When he was studying at the University of Hong Kong, he vigorously participated in choral activities. Inspired by soprano Dr Poon Yeuk Foo in 2005, David has performed frequently in public for charity concerts, including two appearances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. David is also one of the founding members of Opera Hong Kong and the Honorary President of Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. As a tenor, he is very fond of operas, particularly those written by Verdi and Puccini. He thinks that having enough rest is the best treatment for voice.

音樂活動 :方津生是陳方安生的弟弟,姐弟倆常在派對中演出,由姐姐彈琴、弟弟獻唱,直至近期,在陳方安生的七十大壽宴會中,弟弟也以歌賀壽。在香港大學求學期間,他已經積極参與校內的合唱活動。自2005年起,在女高音潘若芙醫生的啟蒙下,他經常在慈善活動中獻唱,包括兩次與香港管弦樂團合作。他也是香港歌劇院的創辦會員之一,並為香港展能藝術會的名譽會長。

9月3日  聞 歌 起 舞 – 從 拉 丁 舞 說 起

古典曲目中,各款舞曲為數不少,熱門如布拉姆斯的匈牙利

舞曲、德伏扎克的斯拉夫舞曲、史特勞斯家族的圓舞曲和波

爾卡等等,都帶給聽眾動感和節奏。當這些舞曲在音樂廳響

起,樂迷都是「坐定定」欣賞的,可能我們會忽略,不少舞

曲其實都能配合步法,讓人翩翩起舞。

兩位嘉賓:何兆華和周琬婷會從熱門的拉丁舞說起,包括火

繼音高和節奏,作曲家麥偉鑄和張珮珊會分析另一音樂表達的

重要原素–強弱。強弱的對比可大可少:在節奏中,强拍和

弱拍交替,編織出律動的軌跡;在音量上,強音與弱音可帶

來最純粹的官能刺激。應強的地方不強,應弱的地方不弱,

這種強弱的落差,有時又會變成趣味的來源,不少作曲家都

精於此道,為聽眾帶來新鮮感。

以文字表達強弱的奧妙真不容易,還是請兩位作曲家選來有

趣的音樂,帶來充滿強弱對比的音樂饗宴。

崔烈比德祺生於羅馬尼亞,因緣際會當上了堂堂柏林愛樂的指揮;

在樂隊原先的首席指揮福特溫格勒 (Wilhelm Furtwängler) 成功「去

納粹化」後,崔氏心甘情願降職做「阿二」,為的是與他敬仰的福

氏保持聯繫。福氏去世後,樂隊選卡拉揚繼任而不要崔氏,後者開

始了廿多年的飄泊。1979年,他擔任慕尼黑愛樂的音樂總監,孜孜

不倦地將這隊樂團提升為歐洲一流管弦樂團,他本人亦聲譽日隆。

盜版唱片泛濫

由於崔氏拒絕錄音(原因後述),但渴望聽他錄音者眾,於是市場上

出現不少崔氏音樂會的實況錄音,但當中有不少都是未經授權的盜

版。由於是盜錄,音響質量參差,但他的「粉絲」也顧不了那麼

多,買之而後快。崔氏與慕尼黑愛樂甚少離開歐洲 (老人家怕舟車

勞頓),惟日本粉絲極多(也出得起錢),他們去過日本巡迴三趟。九

零年代初,我常在東京搜購CD,店員都成了朋友。他們告訴我,

慕尼黑愛樂的樂師每次來,都一皮箱一皮箱的買走「自己有份演

奏」的盜版CD!

猶記得當年跟鄭延益先生一起欣賞我其中兩張「收獲」:崔氏與慕

尼黑的某次《圖畫展覽會》,聽畢,鄭老師歎謂:「這超過了赫特

曼的畫展的視野,這是世博!」欣賞布魯克納的第四交響曲「浪

漫」的第三樂章,鄭老師興奮地手指向天,說:「彷彿滿天神佛:

如來佛,觀音菩薩⋯⋯」

今年是崔烈比德祺一百歲冥壽,就連谷歌(Google)也在首頁創

製了一個特別的「dood le」向他致敬;同是百歲冥壽的蘇提

(Georg Solti) 和雲狄(Günter Wand)可沒有呢!

對比強烈

年輕的崔烈比德祺跟晚年的他,彷彿是兩個截然不同的人。重溫四

十年代末的黑白紀錄片,他在戰爭後的廢墟上指揮柏林愛樂,演奏

貝多芬的《艾格蒙》序曲,熱情澎湃到令人讚嘆不已。1990年前

後的布魯克納交響曲錄影,坐著指揮慕尼黑愛樂的他,動作細小得

多,但他只消稍稍改變一下面部表情,整個音響畫面可以有翻天覆

地的變化。

9月份逢星期二晚8時正,「第四台音樂會」會選播羅馬尼亞偉大指揮崔烈比德祺(Sergiu Celibidache,1912-1996) 的音樂會實況錄音,以紀念他的百歲冥壽。 樂迷對崔氏的錄音甘之如飴,為何崔氏卻認為錄音毫無價值?

晚年的崔氏以「慢」聞名,那是源自他獨特的音樂美學觀點,有些

人受不來,也有不少樂迷非常受落,而我是後者的一份子。有位醫

生好友認為崔氏到了晚年,無論演奏甚麼曲子,其實都是「一樣」

的:都是要把聽者提升到一個較高的、淨化了的精神境界。篇幅有

限,鑑於第四台會播放的幾套節目都屬於崔氏事業中期的錄音,不

特別慢,你可以自己搜集一下他的晚年錄音,互相比較。

「聲音」和「音樂」不能混為一談

不知道讀者有否如下經驗:出席音樂會,台上的人把樂譜一音不漏

地演出,有節奏,音色也不賴;但聽之索然無味,徒覺浪費時間。

崔烈比德祺的愛將巴倫邦(Daniel Barenboim),曾形容崔氏「兼具

了科學家、吉卜賽人和哲學家的所有優點與局限」。巴倫邦自言從

崔氏身上學到很多,例如樂譜、聲音和音樂,三者不能混為一談。

依照樂譜所寫,是可以奏出聲音來;但只有在必要的先決條件都得

到滿全後,聲音才有可能會成為音樂。

錄音不能代替真實演出

崔氏認為音樂是不能「保存」的,只有在真實演奏時才存在,更不

是每一次演出都必定帶來「音樂」。他批評行家的名句是:「(整首

曲子奏過一遍但)音樂從未發生」。現場音樂會也尚且可以「音樂從

未發生」,作為「真實」的替代品,亦即錄音(唱片),在崔氏心目

中當然沒有地位。慕尼黑愛樂擁有自1979年以來,崔烈比德祺指揮

的每場音樂會的實況錄音。老指揮對之採取不理不睬態度,他說那

批錄音對他本人既無意思亦無價值。

其實,「錄音裏沒有音樂」這講法,在崔氏之前已有大音樂家講

過。此外,崔氏認為「通過聲音可以到達音樂,一旦到達,那麼思

想便終止了」。這也許會令人聯想到佛�思想;其實這種清醒但不

思想的意識狀態,並非純東方的說法,歐洲中世紀的哲人也提出

過。崔氏明白,過去一二百年,西方文明「理性主義」壓倒一切。

他認為「邏輯」和「傳統」不但無助音樂的產生,更往往成為提升

靈性的絆腳石。現代人較難理解,但他仍苦口婆心�導後輩,並身

體力行,在舞台上親自演繹。因為要通往音樂,除此之外別無他途—至少崔氏

是這樣認為。

寫了《笑傲樂壇.切利畢達克》的周燕女士和李云中先生說得好:「儘管今天只

能從大師輕視的、『不真實』的錄音去憑弔他的偉業和風采,但我必須承認:每

一次聆聽他指揮的錄音,觀看他的錄像,都有如一次奇遇。」

能在大師去世後的過去十六年裏,不斷有他的錄音、錄像「出土」,也算是愛樂

者的幸福吧。

9月份逢星期二晚8時,「第四台音樂會」會播出崔烈比德祺的珍貴音樂會實

況錄音,涵蓋他由上世紀四十年代中期至七十年代末,與歐洲六隊不同樂團

的演出。當中包括1946年,崔氏擔任柏林愛樂首席指揮時,領導樂團演出蕭斯

達高維契寫於1941年的第七交響曲。曲目詳情請參閱「美樂精華」。

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache (1912-1996). A legend in his own time, he mesmerized orchestras with his intensity and brilliance.

Celibidache considered records as ‘singing pancakes’ that distorted the spontaneity of the music-making moment, and he refused to go into the studio to make recordings. Instead, he believed that the audience should enjoy the music at the concert hall, where ‘music is born’.

Nevertheless, Celibidache’s live concert recordings have flooded into a grateful market over the past decade. His distinct interpretations of music - vital and communicative in his early years, and exclusive conceptions on creation and art works in later years - are well preserved in these recordings. They continue to inspire the younger generation.

In September, every Tuesday at 8pm, Live on 4 brings you these concert recordings, with Celibidache conducting six different orchestras between 1946 and 1978, including a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 in 1946, while he was the Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

對很多家庭來說,購買一座鋼琴是個重大決定!在香港的斗室中擺放一部鋼琴,即使是直立式(upright piano),也會佔用不少空間。一部鋼琴動輒就是數萬元,如果買了之後,自己或孩子能用心學習,「物盡其用」還好,否則三分鐘熱度過後,可能只是為客廳添上一件典雅傢俬⋯⋯

對學習者─特別是小孩子而言,學鋼琴亦是恆心與毅力的大挑戰!當每天都被家課、玩具、電腦圍繞的同時,要抽出時間,儘管少至幾十分鐘,要坐好在鋼琴前練習,著實不易。

鋼琴不易學,但它仍擁有無比的魅力,使很多人甘於嘗試,並且得到收穫。鋼琴自十八世紀中期起成為最愛歡迎的樂器,幾乎每個作曲家,都為此樂器添上豐富的曲目,發掘更多表達的方法。縱然你是學木管樂或弦樂器,也總會有機會與鋼琴合作,或伴奏或協奏,配搭出不同的組合。

發聲原理各不同很多人以為古鍵琴(Harpsichord)是鋼琴的前身。雖然兩者都是鍵盤樂器,而鋼琴在十八世紀後期的確取代了古鍵琴的地位,但它們的發聲原理並不相同。簡單來說,古鍵琴是透過撥桿上的爪子(又稱撥子)撥動琴弦而發聲,音色較清脆;鋼琴卻是用琴槌敲擊琴內的鋼弦發聲,音色較堅實。後者還有一個特點:琴槌敲擊鋼弦的強弱力度可以透過演奏者觸鍵的輕重決定,從而彈奏出不同的聲量。正因如此,鋼琴最初亦稱為「fortepiano」(forte是強音,強烈的意思,而piano就是弱音,柔弱的意思),藉以突顯出它能夠變化音量的特性。

鍵琴的發聲原理:爪子撥動琴

鋼琴琴弦上的制音器整齊排列長短有緻的琴聲

鋼琴是一件非常複雜的樂器,當中結構非常精巧。要令鋼琴能發出不同音量,就要有一個準確槓桿系統,將琴手不同力度及快慢的觸鍵,傳到琴槌並敲擊琴弦。但這並不足夠,琴的鋼弦敲響了,聲音又應持續多久呢?要解決這個問題,鋼琴便需要另一組系統去控制鋼弦的震盪,即琴音的持續時間。其實每條弦上都有一個制音器(damper),它會用蓋著軟氈的部分貼著琴弦。每當按下琴鍵時,有關鋼弦上的制音器就會升起,讓鋼弦盡情發聲,直到手指離開琴鍵,制音器又會回到弦上,制止鋼弦繼續震動和發聲。正因為有這組機件,我們才可以聽到長短有緻的琴音。

「弦外之音」能夠控制音量、長短,已經可以演繹很多有趣的樂曲,但樂器製造者和作曲家對此仍未滿足!鋼琴是一件敲擊樂器,無論鋼琴手如何努力,也不能造出像弦樂器或人聲般連貫的樂句。鋼琴上的制音器令到不同的琴弦間的共鳴聲音也消退了,令琴音清晰分明,卻不免影響了音與音的連貫性。要彌補這項不足,鋼琴便加上了延音踏瓣(sustaining pedal,又稱damper pedal),當用腳將之踏下,琴內所有制音器都會升起,無論彈哪一個鍵,琴箱內其他琴弦都會共鳴,產生特別的聲音,就像將油彩化開的感覺。浪漫時期開始,作曲家都喜用延音踏瓣。鋼琴工匠至此仍意猶未盡,為鋼琴再加上柔音踏瓣(soft pedal,又稱una corda)─只要踏著這踏瓣,音量便會相對地減弱,產生一種較乾涸的音色。作曲家就是透過這些精密的機械,抒發動人心弦的鋼琴樂思。

結構精密的鋼琴誘發作曲家寫出豐富多姿鋼琴音樂。本月的 「情有獨鍾」以鋼琴為主角,配以古鍵琴、古鋼琴及管風琴作品。誠邀你在週末黃昏,一同欣賞精彩的鍵盤音樂。星期六下午5時至7時,不要錯過!

安排不同聲音的配搭、計算節奏的對應,製造刺激與起伏。在感性的層面上,相信不少

作曲家都體會過以下過程:最初在創作的忐忑思緒和抽象靈感中爭扎,到靈感跟隨時間

流逝而具象化,再表現為音樂。

在節目的上半部份,我會邀請幾位作曲家參與節目,探索一下作曲家的感性和理性的不

同面貌,一起分享創作時的內心世界。

不同的藝術創作都可以激發起作曲家心中的音樂,不論詩、畫、舞、燈光、音響、電

影,都能觸動作曲家的心思,啟發靈感。其實,在其他的藝術創作中,音樂同樣激發起

各種思潮。在節目的下半部份,我會邀請不同媒界的藝術朋友出席節目,分享一下音樂

如何觸動他們。

在二十世紀末,多位著名作曲家均受其他藝術的影響,如德布西(Claude Debussy)受印

象派畫作的影響與啟發,音樂風格不以傳統所講究的優美旋律或完整樂曲架構為主要訴

求,轉而追求聲音色彩瞬間變化所產生的音響效果。因此,他的音樂在旋律架構上給人

一種朦朧淒美的意境。馬勒(Gustav Mahler)晚年的傑作《大地之歌》,靈感來自中國

詩;在史特拉汶斯基(Igor Stravinsky)的《春之祭》中,音樂與舞蹈互相影響,創造出

新的格調。至於今日的作曲家,靈感來源更多,他們吸收各種媒體的資訊,視野亦更見

廣闊。

For those who wish to study music at the highest level, you may not need to travel to the Juilliard School in New York City. Instead, the school is planning to come to you with a campus in China.

The Juilliard School has signed a framework agreement with various organizations at Tianjin City, including the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission and the Tianjin Conservatory of Music of China, to establish the Tianjin Institute, an educational institute operated by The Juilliard School in Tianjin, China.

The framework agreement includes provisions for a feasibility study, which will fully explore the regulatory, operational, and financial aspects of establishing the Tianjin Institute. Programmes to be offered are yet to be determined, but non-accredited music programmes at pre-college level for students aged 8 to 18, as well as specialized pre-professional training for conservatory graduates, are expected to be created. Future expansion into other educational and artistic initiatives is also anticipated. With its initial focus on classical music education and performance, the Institute will mark The Juilliard School’s first expansion beyond its New York City campus, and is expected to be the School’s only such institute in East Asia.

An increasing number of talented Chinese students have been admitted to study at Juilliard over the past ten years. The Tianjin Institute will expand access to Juilliard education by bringing together the region’s most promising young musicians with internationally renowned performers from Juilliard’s network, and would contribute to Tianjin’s civic and cultural life. Centrally located in the Yujiapu financial district, the Institute would also serve as the only site in the region where prospective students could audition for admission to Juilliard in New York.

Since its founding in 1905, Juilliard has developed an outstanding record of nurturing and refining the world’s most influential artists in classical music, dance and acting, including Van Cliburn, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Leonard Slatkin, Pinchas Zukerman, alongside with Hong Kong’s Nancy Loo, Eric Fung, Yim Wan, and Lio Kuok-man. More Chinese talents are yet to come from this new Institute.

國際知名的茱莉亞音樂學院將與天津市多個單位合作,籌建一所由茱莉亞營運及管理的�育機構。這所學院將會是茱莉亞在東南亞開設的第一所�育機構及招募應考中心。

茱莉亞音樂學院現正研究新學院的規管、運作和財務安排,然後決定課程內容。為八至十八歲學生而設的音樂先修班,及為畢業生而設的職前音樂專業訓練課程相信行將落實。新學院暫時以音樂�育和演奏為主,將來或會擴展到其他藝術範疇。

茱莉亞音樂學院近十年入讀的中國學生人數不斷上升。院方相信在天津設立分校不單能提升國內音樂學生的水平,亦能讓該校在美國的老師能夠和中國同學切磋交流。自茱莉亞在1905年創校以來,培育了不少樂壇巨星,當中包括格拉賓、費林明、馬友友、普爾文、史拉健和蘇嘉文,而本地音樂家則有羅乃新、馮景禧、閻韻和廖國敏等等。茱莉亞音樂學院中國分校落成,相信會造就更多出色的中國音樂家。

Violin Virtuoso Ruggiero Ricci Passes Away

小 提 琴 家 力 茲 逝 世Born in San Bruno, California, in 1918, Ricci started learning the violin at age 6. His debut at age 10, playing a formidable pro-gramme of works by Vieuxtemps, Saint-Saëns, Mendelssohn, and Wieniawski, astounded the audi-ence and started him on the road to early stardom. as a world class “wunderkind,” one of the century’s few authentic prodi-gies came the next year in New York after his Carnegie Hall debut, when the leading critic of the day wrote: “All that great violinists do, he did.”

During the Second World War, he served the Army Air Force by playing for the troops. Known as “Entertainment Specialist Ricci”, he played and broadcast hundreds of concerts under a variety of unusual conditions, often without an accompanist, exploring and presenting the largely unexploited solo violin repertoire.

Ricci was known for his authoritative interpretation of Paganini. He had a broad and diverse repertoire of over 50 concertos, performed with technical brilliance and a wide range of colour. His was the first recording of the complete unaccompanied Paganini Caprices, and he performed the U.S. premieres of both the Fourth and Sixth Concertos. His fourth recording of the Caprices was made for the first time on ‘Il Cannone Guarnerius’, Paganini’s violin. His discography encompasses the widest repertoire of any violinist. He performed over 5,000 concerts in 65 countries. Ricci also held teaching positions at Indiana University, Juilliard School, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He also wrote about violin technique.

Ricci’s last performance was in 2003 with Martha Argerich. With an extraordinary concert career that spanned over 75 years, legendary violinist Ruggiero Ricci died of heart failure on 6 August at age 94.

In remembrance of Ruggiero Ricci, Radio 4 brings you his 1988 Hong Kong recital recorded at City Hall Concert Hall. The all unaccompanied programme includes Bach’s Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV1003, Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV1004, Paganini’s Caprices Nos. 13 to 24, and a few technically testing but delightful encores. The recording will be played in four parts in Nocturne (in Cantonese) from 11 to 14 September (Mon to Fri) at 10pm.

國際知名的小提琴家力茲,縱橫樂壇七十五年。這位小提琴奇才上月因心臟衰竭辭世,終年九十四歲。

力茲生於1918年,在美國加利福尼亞州出生,6歲開始學習小提琴、10歲首次公開演出,拉奏魏歐當、聖桑、孟德爾遜及維尼奧夫斯基的艱深作品,深得聽眾愛戴,繼而踏上演奏星途。這位音樂神童隨後往紐約演出,更深得樂評讚賞,認為「所有偉大小提琴家能做到的,他都可以做到」。

二次大戰期間,力茲在美國空軍服役,拉奏小提琴,在很多艱難的情況下演奏。他一生以演奏巴格尼尼的樂曲最負盛名。此外,他亦以廣闊的演奏範疇(演繹超過五十首協奏曲)、輝煌的技巧和豐富的音色見稱。他發掘大量鮮為人知的小提琴作品,也是首位灌錄巴格尼尼無伴奏隨想曲的音樂家,並在美國首演了巴格尼尼的第四和第六協奏曲。他錄製過多張唱片,甚至用上巴格尼尼專用的寡奈里小提琴,灌錄巴格尼尼的隨想曲。此外,他在印第安納大學、茱莉亞音樂學院、密歇根大學-安娜堡分校和薩爾斯堡莫扎特音樂學院任�,又著有小提琴�學技法書籍。

力茲在全球六十五個國家演出超過五千場。他最後一次公開演出,是2003年和鋼琴家亞嘉莉殊合作。

為紀念力玆,第四台為你帶來他於1988年在香港大會堂演出的現場錄音。當中全為無伴奏作品,包括巴赫的A小調奏鳴曲,BWV1003、D小調組曲,BWV1004、巴格尼尼第13至24隨想曲,以及幾首超技而精緻的加奏作品。錄音將分為四部份,於 9月11日至14日(星期二至五)晚上10時,在「夜心曲」中播出。

倫 敦 奧 運 會 半 個 月 前 完 滿 結 束 , 或 許 有 不 少 人 仍 然 有 點 迷惘,一早起來便看電視或收聽有關奧運的節目。如果有上述的 《病徵》,你大概已經患上「奧運後抑鬱綜合症」(Post-Olympic Depression Syndrome)。

怎麼辦?我建議大家嘗試用以下「治療」方法:

倫敦奧運會音樂背後⋯⋯

第一,就是盡力忘記背後,包括開幕禮的點點滴滴:戇豆先生(Rowan Atkinson) 擔任電琴手,聯同倫敦交響樂團演繹電影《烈火戰車》的主題曲「Chariots of Fire」;占士邦為英女皇護航,由白金漢宮乘直升機到大會現場。當中不少得的兩個精彩樂段:韓德爾的兩首著名作品,在其他節目中常播放的《示巴女皇蒞臨》及《皇家煙火》的選段;以及隨後的兩首電影音樂,包括戰爭電影《The Dam Busters》和《占士邦007 》的主題曲。

里約熱內盧奧運會音樂背後⋯⋯

第二,努力面前,用期待的心情來等待四年後的巴西里約熱內盧奧運會!這不是消極的方法呢!你可以先備課,了解一下當地的音樂文化。如果你還記得的話,閉幕禮後段有一個十分鐘的環節,展示未來主辦國巴西熱情的一面。開始的時候以森巴嘉年華為題,背境音樂是大家耳熟能詳的森巴音樂,它透過不同的敲擊樂器加入,而構成多重節奏。其中有一件樂器是森巴音樂的靈魂,稱為魁卡鼓(cuíca)。它是一種仿聲鼓,外型跟一般的鼓沒有太大分別,只是透過一塊小布跟裡面一根棒子不斷的磨擦,而產生一種特別聲效。中段環節用了巴西作曲家魏拉-羅伯士(Heitor Villa-Lobos) 的第五號《巴西的巴赫風格》的詠嘆調來襯托其他的副題。如果你還記得的話,我在第五、六集已跟大家介紹過以上音樂。

不論在我們的日常生活,抑或是大型盛事,世界音樂都有其獨特性格,為平凡的生活添上不少色彩。

Mozart’s RequiemSince Alexander Pushkin’s play, Mozar t and Salieri, Mozar t’s unfinished masterpiece, the Requiem, has been surrounded by myths. However, what is cer tain is that Mozar t was inspired by Bach’s choral music through Bach’s pupil Johann Friedrich Doles. In this concer t, Die Konzer tisten and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, under Stephen Layton, together with many distinguished singers, bring you Mozar t’s Requiem. There are also excerpts from Bach’s Motet BWV225 and Cantata BWV51.

John Cage AnniversaryA pioneer of indeterminacy in music, John Cage is one of the most significant American composers in the 20th century. Apar t from his well-known work 4’33” and music for prepared piano, he was instrumental in modern dance through his collaboration with choreographer Merce Cunningham. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Cage’s bir th, Radio 4 brings you two concer ts from the European Broadcasting Union in which you will hear major works by John Cage, including Music of Changes, Water Walk, Imaginary Landscape No. 4, and others. The first concer t features a historic per formance with John Cage playing his own works at the piano, whilst the second concer t is from the renowned Prague Spring International Music Festival 2012.

RTHK Radio 4’s Music Beyond Borders series began on 20 November 2003 with a piano recital in Studio One dedicated to things Iberian. The idea was suggested over a lunch at the China Tee Club with a good friend who was able to get help in funding the event from the Consulate General of Spain. The evening was a success that allowed me to turn a single concert into an entire project of bringing unexplored and relatively unknown music and artists from abroad, predominantly world and jazz artists, to Hong Kong - although the very first concert did feature Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s pianist Shirley Ip. I then approached many Consulates and cultural institutions to take part in these rewarding partnerships, resulting in appearances by: Mara Carlyle (UK) whose voice and music were featured in the very popular 100 cats IKEA advert; WOMAD artists Te Vaka (New Zealand) and the Raghu Dixit Project (India); digeridoo master Mark Atkins (Australia); jazz from the Espoo Big Band (Finland) and the man with the red trombone, Nils Landgren (Sweden), along with so many others... The aim has always been to encourage cultural exchange and to make everyone aware of the wealth of excellent music that’s out there, beyond our borders. Thanks to its ever-growing fan base, Music Beyond Borders has succeeded in a way that I find very gratifying.

The Music Beyond Borders @ 10 Anniversary Concerts are coming soon with a big change in venue - outdoors at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza C (as part of the New Vision Arts Festival 2012). The concerts will take place on 3 Nov (Saturday) and 4 November (Sunday) from 2:30pm to 6pm. Two past Music Beyond Borders artists return: Award winning Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing, this time with his Wired Paradise band and, Austria’s Georg Gratzer and Beefolk, who gained quite a following on their last visit here. To mark the start of another 10 years of Music Beyond Borders to come, will be the Claude Diallo Situation from Switzerland, taking part in the project for the first time.

第四台的「無限領域」節目即將踏入第十個年頭。節目監製盧迪斯以及台

前幕後一眾精英今次會移師戶外,到尖沙咀香港文化中心的露天廣場,泡

製一場精彩演出。這場音樂會也是今年新視野藝術節的節目之一。

一如似往,「無限領域」聯同各國的駐港機構及領事館,透過音樂表演,

為香港樂迷帶來不同的文化特色。為了今次盛會,迴聲大獎得主、荷蘭薩

克管手漢寧會重臨香江,而奧地利的比福特合奏團會再次將歐洲的室樂精

神融入亞洲特色。還有初次參與「無限領域」的瑞士的勁旅Claude Diallo

Situation 也會為香港樂迷帶來新鮮感。
