The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) visited the York Mills Branch of the Galleria on August 15, 2013. The visit served the purpose of promoting American Agricultural products. The members toured the produce area and showed great interest in the American apple and watermelon displays and sales. They also toured Gallerias specialty corners such as tofu, Dadam and cafeteria and noted the difference between local stores and the Galleria. They stated that they would continue to open the channels of communication and promote good business relations to market American Agricultural products.

The Korea Thanksgiving Festival is being held from Sat. Sept. 14 to 15, 2013 at the Mel Lastman Square and Galleria is a Gold sponsor this year. They are planning to hold a Bibimbap mixing ceremony for a 100 people. At the Galleria booth you will find Kimchi, popped rice cracker, walnut cookies, etc. which will be sold at great prices and for children there will be cotton candy and balloons. Try your luck at the Wheel of Fortune for a chance to win various prizes. The atmosphere at this years festival will be elevated by the addition of the Jullanamdo produce.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers annually assesses 4000 supermarkets. Both the Thornhill and York Mills branches of the Galleria Supermarket were in the top 2% for the last 5 years and received another Award of Merit. The award ceremony will be held at the Metro Convention Centre on Oct. 1, 2013.

History

Jesa() is a ceremony commonly practiced in Korea. Jesa functions as a memorial to the ancestors of the participants.

Jesa is usually held on the anniversary of the ancestor's death. The majority of Catholics, Buddhists and nonbelievers

practice ancestral rites but Protestants do not. The Catholic ban on ancestral rituals was lifted in 1939, when the Pope

Pius XII of the Catholic Church formally recognized ancestral rites as a civil practice. Many Korean American Christians,

particularly Protestants, no longer practice this rite.

There are several kinds of ancestor rituals such as Gijesa (, ), Charye (, ), Seongmyo (,

), Myosa (, ). Gijesa is a memorial service which is held on the day of the ancestor's death every year. Gijesa

is performed until upwards of five generations of ancestors in the eldest descendant's house. Memorial services that are

performed on Chuseok or New Year's Day are called "Charye," On April 5th and before Chuseok, Koreans visit the tombs

of their ancestors and trim the grass off the tombs. Then, they offer food, fruits, and wine, and finally make bows in front

of the tombs. Memorial services that are performed in front of tombs are called "Seongmyo." Finally Myosa is performed

at the tomb site in the lunar month of October to commemorate old ancestors (five or more generations removed).

History

Ancestral rites are typically divided into 3 categories:

1.Charye (, ) - tea rites held 4 times a year on major holidays (Korean New Year, Chuseok)

2.Gije (, , also called Gijesa, , ) - household rites held the night before or morning of an ancestor's

death anniversary (, ).

3.Sije (, ; also called Sasije, , ) - seasonal rites held for ancestors who are 5 or more generations

removed (typically performed annually in the tenth lunar month).

To perform ancestor rituals, the family gather at the eldest son's house to prepare many kinds of food such as Wine,

Taro soup, Beef, Fish, three different colored Vegetables, many kinds of Fruits, and Rice cake or Songpyon, particularly

those that were favored by the deceased. The Shinwi (, ) or memorial tablet, which symbolizes the spiritual

presence of the ancestor, is placed at the center of the table. In modern days, the daughter or younger son of the family

may also perform these rites.

After midnight or in the evening before an ancestor's death anniversary, the descendants set the shrine, with a paper

screen facing north and food laid out on a lacquer table as follows: rice, meat, and white fruits on the west, soup, fish,

and red fruits on the east, fruits on the first row (, ) (, ), dried fish and vegetables on the

second row(, ), meat and fish on the third row (, ) (, ), and cooked rice

and soup on the last row (, ). The rice bowls and individual offerings to the male ancestors are placed to

the west, and those of females to the east (, ). Two candles are also laid at both ends of the table, and an

incense holder is placed in the middle. In front of the shrine, a memorial tablet (, ) is set up or a written prayer if

the family does not own one.

Garth Mercer and his family experienced Korean culture

by taking part in a photo shoot wearing the traditional

Korean costumes. It was nice to see the traditional outfits

since it is difficult to see during thanksgiving here in

Canada.

The Hanbok is traditional dress for Koreans made with

vibrant colors and simple lines. The basics consist of

Jeogori which is the upper garment worn both by men and

women, and Chima or skirt for women and Baji or pants

for men. Po or overcoat is also worn by men to protect

from the cold. Jokki or vest is sometimes worn over the

hanbok and is usually neutral in color to harmonize with

the other garments.
