The Galleria Supermarket sponsored a Childrens Korean Food Festival on May 4, 2013 at the Dosan Hall hosted by The Korea Times Daily. Fifty children participated in the events circulating among six booth learning how to make items such as Kimchi, Japchae, Kimbab, and dumplings. The Kimchi corner was especially popular as Galleria taught the children an easy way to make the dish by themselves.

On May 7, 2013 the KCCM (Korean Community Centre for Multiculturalism, Principal Seung Nak Park) held closing ceremonies for their 34 year run as the representative for International Languages Program in Canada at Thornhill Secondary School. The attendees included 206 of its students, 100 parents, the City Councillor, members of the military, the Police Chief and the Board of Education representative among other guests, marking the end and celebrating the graduation of the students. The Student of the Year Award went to Jason Lee who stated that he was happy to be able to relearn the language of his birth.

The FCCM (Federation of Chinese Canadian in Markham) and the City of Markham will be co-hosting the 2013 Taste of Asia. The event will take place at Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road from June 29 to June 30, 2013. This years sponsors include CIBC, GM, Galleria Supermarket and Nongshim among others. This year marks the 11th anniversary for Canadas largest street festival. Over 100,000 people attended last year and similar numbers are expected for this year. The festival has offerings from over 150 food and business promotion booths and a stage that will showcase community concerts, singing competitions and live music concerts. Other events include 3 on 3 basketball, GM auto show and test drive and a job fair. The festival will have a Korean theme in light of the 50th Korean Canadian Amity. Galleria Supermarket as the Honorary Sponsor is receiving much attention and expectations are high. It will be showcasing Bibimbap demos and promoting various Korean foods. In addition to Galleria, Nongshim will be sponsoring a series of activities including Nongshim Black Ramyun eating contest, K-POP cover dancing, Taekwondo, Samulnori, Traditional Korean Dance and more. Many other Korean businesses are expected to participate making this a significant and memorable festival for the Korean community. Admission to the festival is free.

Devan's RecipeKorean Sweet, Sour & Spicy Pork Ssambap with Apple infused Jasmine Rice

1.5lb Liberterre pork belly, 1 sweet onion (diced), 3 cloves of garlic (minced), 1 tsp minced ginger, 1 tsp minced lemongrass, 1 tbsp gochujang, 1 tbsp soya sauce, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp Korean mustard, 1 tsp hot sesame oil, 2 springs cilantro, 2 tsp vegetable oil, 1 bunch green onion, salt & fresh cracked black pepper

1 cup cooked jasmine rice, 2 tsp white sesame seeds, 2 tsp black sessame seeds, 1 apple (brunoise/fine cubes), 1 head boston/bibb/butter lettuce, 1/2 cup shredded carrot

1. In a work or deep frying pan on medium heat, saute onion in vegetable oil.When it becomes translucent add garlic, ginger, lemongrass, salt, pepper and continue sauteing.2. After one minute add pork belly cubes and cook for 2-3 minutes.3. Add in all remaining pork ingredients except for the cilantro and green onion and saute.4. Once pork is cooked remove from the heat and allow to rest.5. Fold in white sesame seeds and top with fresh chopped cilantro and green onion.6. Fold apple and black sesame seeds into rice.7. Take a lettuce leaf and place down on a serving plate.Top with apple rice, delicious pork, garnish with shredded carrot and serve!
