And of course, the just-announced Oscar nominated ro-mantic duet, I See The Lightthat’s very much A Whole NewWorld of Aladdin.

Alan Menken takes Tangledback to the glory days of Disneymusical cartoons, mainly be-cause he’s the same guy whomade the songs. Not as greatand incredible as the old ones, but they’re just the same.

Voice acting is just okay, because the best performancescome from the non-speakinganimals Maximus the palace

horse and the chameleon. Afew times it is hilarious, butthe film has less the emotion-al weight of Mermaid’s orBeauty and the Beast or The Li-on King.

Nevertheless Tangled is asmooth-sailing fairy tale, a fineaddition to Disney’s collectionof princess fables. No split ends, just happily ever after.

TangledDirected by Nathan Greno, Byron Howard

S INGING! In a 3D Disney animation! The only in-gredient missing is Lea Salonga, and I’d say theclassic Disney is back. A few more songs and

this can even be staged on Broadway. Promise.Restyling the story of Rapun-

zel for the Kindle generation,Tangled is Disney’s 50th officialanimated feature since the the-atrical release of Snow Whiteand the Seven Dwarfs in 1937.

The child Rapunzel (voicedby Mandy Moore) is kidnappedfrom the Palace by the mali-cious Mother Gothel (theateractress Donna Murphy) andraised in a secluded tower asher own child so that she canuse the power in the child’s hairto keep herself young forever.

On Rapunzel’s 18th birthday,a thief (Flynn, voiced byZachary Levi) stumbles uponthe tower and hides in it, onlyto be discovered by Rapunzel’s

trusty frying pan and pet lizardPascal (actually a chameleon.Nuance.) Rapunzel strikes adeal with Flynn to take her outinto the city without lettingGothel know, but Mother Gotheldiscovers the plan and foils it.

Benefiting from a fixed-focalpoint stereoscopy despite thedeep wide shots, the audiencegets to enjoy the stylized anima-tion in eye-friendly 3D. In Taga-log, hindi ito nakakahilo.

The best part of Tangled thatmakes it wondrous family enter-tainment is the singing. If onlythere were lots of it.

Rapunzel has a solo similarto Ariel’s Part of Your World inThe Little Mermaid. There’s a

Put on good luck in the Year of the Metal RabbitBy Irene C. PerezInquirer Lifestyle

DO not put your creditcard and cash in thesame wallet, becausethe loan would “eat up”savings, put a waterfountain in your hometo prevent money-drydays, and de-clutter tolet fresh energy flow.

T h e s e a r e j u s tsome practical fengshui tips for the Yearof the Metal Rabbitfrom consultant Ma-rites Allen.

S t a y a w a y f r o mpessimists or “nega”people who draw ne-gative vibes, and lis-ten to upbeat musiclike songs from LadyGaga to brighten upyour mood.

Allen gave theseguidelines during the2011 Philippine FengShui Updates, a five-hour talk recently heldat the packed ImperialPalace Hotel ballroomin Quezon City.

The annual confer-ence, now on its sixthyear, was attended by

host Boy Abunda, IN-QUIRER columnist TessaPrieto-Valdes , f i lmproducer “Mother”Lily Monteverde, busi-ness magnate Wash-ington Sycip, and acrowd of followers.

For Chinese NewYear on Feb. 3, Allenrecommended eatingChinese food like fish,“longevity noodles,”and sticky rice cakeswith the family, whilewearing somethingnew and red.

Allen is a memberof the Feng Shui Soci-eties of London andSingapore and Worldof Feng Shui Malaysia, and travels extensivelyto study and give semi-nars. She attended theSoutheast Asia Summiti n Ind i a l a s t yea r,where she met theDalai Lama, and under-went spiritual cleansingat Kopan Monastery inNepal. She is presidentof World of Feng ShuiPhilippines (WOFS),which sells merchan-dise in malls.

She also has a mas-

ter’s degree in Busi-ness Administrationfrom the Ateneo.

‘Trinity luck’S h e c l a r i f i e d ,

though, that she isn’tChinese, but a Filipino.

“You don’t have tobe Chinese to practicefeng shui. I got intothis because there wasa time in my life whennothing went right—my first marriage wasannulled, I was havinga hard time in my ca-reer, I was depressed. So I looked for a wayto counter and educat-ed myself about fengshui.”

The f l amboyan tAllen, often dressed inelaborate gowns andloud accessories, cred-its feng shui for hersuccess. She marriedan Englishman, andshutt les to the UK,where her four childrenare based. Her semi-nars are well-attended,and people buy WOFSitems despite high pricetags (a desk calendarcosts P750; the ThreeBars of Gold pendant

costs over P76,000).She explained how

the “Trinity Luck” orthe total luck of a per-son works. There’s theHeaven Luck, which isan “inborn gift”; EarthL u c k , w h i c h i s a t-ta ined by work ingwith your surround-ings; and MankindLuck, which comesfrom the principle ofachieving good fromdoing good. Feng shui, she said, activates theEarth Luck by sub-scribing to dates, di-rections, and itemsdeemed auspicious.

“It’s all about righttiming, positive think-ing and visualization. When you see yourcharm, you alreadyfeel lucky.”

Unlike Western as-trology, feng shui of-fers “cures” throughamulets, medallionsand jewelry which sheplayfully calls “pan-gontra.”

During the program,she enumerates thep a n g o n t r a o n h e rbody—on her hair,

around her neck, handand fingers, even fish-ing out several from thebustier of her gown, which was in mustardyellow, said to be thelucky color of the year.

With yellow as theauspicious color for2011, does that meanit will be a smooth yearfor President NoynoyAquino, a Metal Rat?

It will be a “chal-lenging” year fromwhat she could readfrom his chart, since2011 is characterizedby terrorism attacksand calamities causedby fire or heat.

L u c k y s i g n s a r eSnake, Dog and Boar;Roosters and Rabbitsshould be wary.

Auspiciousindustries

It will be a flourish-ing time for those inmetal-element busi-nesses like mining, jewelry, computers andairlines. Same goes forearth-related ventureslike property, real es-tate, construction andhotels. Fire-related in-dustries are also look-ing great, such as thestock market, enter-tainment, restaurants, and lighting.

Meanwhile, outlookis “discouraging” forwater businesses likebanking, shipping, transport, alcohol andfishing, as well as thoseunder wood—agricul-ture, publishing andpublic relations.

This can be coun-tered by consulting afeng shui expert, buy-ing items that control

the bad chi (energy),and mainta in ing abright attitude.Shopping for luck

Valdes, an interiordesigner, has been at-tending Allen’s annualsymposium for fiveyears now. The fengshui knowledge helpsin her work, especiallywith placement to “at-tract better energy ac-cording to the direc-tion of the house andthe animal sign of theowner.” Rules vary perhouse, she said, butdecor like dragons, or-ange trees and waterfountains is generallyconsidered lucky.

Another interiordesigner, Anthony Cu-ratolo, shared thatfrom one water foun-tain, his house nowhas eight. It is his sec-ond year of followingfeng shui practicesfrom Allen. He “en-hances” his luck with ascarf and watch print-ed with mantras, beadbracelets, charms, andan auspicious wallet. The items are expen-sive, he admitted, buthe considers them along-term investment, since “more blessingscome in return.”
