Year 10 Work Experience For six months, the Year 10 students have been preparing themselves for this important week. 240 students have entered the world of work for four days from Tuesday, 24 to Friday, 27 June. The aim is to make students work ready and to help them make informed choices about their career paths, beginning with subject choices to be made shortly for Year 11 and 12. The industries that have offered placements are diverse and interesting and students are to be congratulated on their hard work in securing jobs on their own! A small number of students have gone to New South Wales for interstate placements and seven students have proactively completed work experience in their own time. Dear Parents, Semester Report Cards should have been received in the mail by all parents as these were posted over the winter break. If you have yet to receive a report card, please contact the school for assistance. The mail out included information about online bookings for the Parent Teacher Night which will occur next Tuesday, 22 July from 3:30pm to 7:00pm. You may contact my secretary, on 3350 0301 if you have had any difficulties with making bookings. These close on Monday, 21 July at 9:00am. Closure of bookings allows teachers time to prepare for interviews. The Semester results were again very pleasing. I am particularly impressed with how well our Year 8s have settled and performed in their first semester at high school. I enjoyed reading and signing so many great Year 10 and Year 8 report cards. Today students were engaged in academic monitoring where students reviewed their own performance and plan strategies to build on their success. At 2.00pm on Monday, 4 August Wavell will celebrate the academic performances of our top five percent. Students and their families will soon receive invitations to this prestigious event. There are a range of special events scheduled for this term including; School, District and Regional Athletics; the annual Ski Trip; our Year 12 Formal; the Queensland Core Skills Test; a number of University Open Days; Year 10 SET Plan Interviews and Careers Day; Years 8 and 10 Subject Selection Evening; Literacy Olympics; school photographs; several drama, dance and music performances; District and Regional winter sports finals and Rugby League finals. It has been exciting for both students and teachers to observe the accelerated construction of our new Junior Secondary teaching facility. Over the holidays the third and final storey has appeared with the next stage to involve the complex roofing structure. The emergence of our new building is a clear symbol of how our plans for Junior Secondary are taking shape. Over Semester 2 our Junior Secondary teaching team will consolidate the philosophy and practices that will guide our daily operations and our curriculum teams will finalise plans for our Year 7 curriculum units and delivery. New parents will be welcomed to our school community with a special parent meeting to be held in our Assembly Hall on Monday, 15 September at 7.00pm. Wavell is well placed for a smooth start to the 2015 school year. Year 8 Camp Athletics Carnival

In the last week of Term 2, over 200 of our Year 8 students, along with prefects and teachers enjoyed three days at Noosa. Students faced a variety of challenges which included kayaking or mountain biking, high ropes, beach games and initiatives. The camp went very well. The weather proved very kind despite some chilly starts. Students who attended are commended on their attitude and behaviour. The days went fast and many wished they could stay and holiday on camp! Thanks to our prefects and teachers for their support.

Our Annual Track and Field Carnival is next week. Pre-carnival events will be on Wednesday, 23 July in Lessons 1 & 2: 1500m, Javelin, Triple Jump and 13 and 14 years High Jump. Students participating in these events must nominate by lunchtime Tuesday, 22 July. Competitors then go to normal classes for lessons 3 & 4. On Wednesday, 23 July, normal classes run for all other students not involved in the pre-carnival competition. On Thursday, 24 July the Annual Athletics Carnival for 2014 will be held. All students are expected to attend this compulsory whole school event. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform and may add their house colours at school (hair spray is not appropriate). Last year’s event was very successful with a majority of students participating, while others enjoyed supporting their house. This year’s carnival looks to be bigger and brighter. Can back-to-back champions Keren hold off the challenges this year? Who will be the Age Champions for 2014? Events commence at 9:30am with a variety of events scheduled.
