The Mandeni Local Municipality and its citizens finally have something to celebrate about due to

the highest of service delivery needs being met proper shelter.

The Economic Development, Planning and Human Settlements Portfolio Committee (Mandeni),

the Ilembe District Municipality (IDM) and the Department of Human Settlements efforts will see a total of 2000 units being built

after all related stakeholders agreed after years in the making.

At a recent Mayoral Imbizo targeted a t addressing all issues I s i t h e b e r e l a t e d ; M a n d e n i M a y o r , Councillor SB Zulu a d d r e s s e d s e r v i c e delivery backlogs, and the issue of wards from t h e I s i t h e b e S l u m Clearance Hous ing Project dragging on due to non-performance of implementing agents.

“We have come today to announce that Isithebe housing project has since been approved by the M E C f o r H u m a n Settlements for the planning process for a total of 2000 units. The w o r k o f g e t t i n g communities ready for registration in some wards has resumed,” said Zulu.

Thobile Ngiba (34) of the M a p h u m u l o a r e a (Mthandeni) was blessed w i t h q u a d r u p l e t s o n Thursday, 16 July 2015. She was referred by Stanger Hospital to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital where she

delivered her babies. They were referred back to Stanger Hospital for continuity of care at the Neonatal Nursery ward where they are growing well.

T h o b i l e , w h o i s unemployed, has another 3

children aged 11, 9 and 2 respectively at home. She resides with her m o t h e r w h o i s a pensioner, and has no other support except for the child care grant.

“I am grateful to the Lord for blessing me with the quadruplets but at the same time I am concerned as to how I will cope at home when I am discharged,” said Thobile.

Thobile is pleading with anyone who can offer to assist her with the following items: formula, nappies, baby clothes or any other form of support. If you

The much anticipated one-woman comedy show, Mellodramatic was a hit on Friday and Saturday at Sibaya Casino. Mello Gilbert

is thrilled with the success of her show, which was written, p r o d u c e d a n d directed by herself.

The audience was impressed as 10-year-old Xavier a r t i c u l a t e l y introduced his 6-year-old brother, Zander, as well as his mum as the main act.

Since its inception, Zakariyya Muslim School (ZMS) has continued to grow from strength to strength. The past two decades have seen new classrooms, sporting codes and upgraded facilities being introduced to the school.

Whilst as parents and educators we generally focus quite a bit on the performance of learners in the higher grades, it is equally important to pay attention to the development of our little ones as well. In this regard, one of the key offerings at the school has always been the Grade R learning programme.

Last week, the school held an open day to showcase the Grade R class as well as the newly revamped play areas.

A welcoming, cheerful & friendly atmosphere greets children as they start their day. Apart from learning the

‘Mellodramatic’ a hit at Sibaya

Grade R at ZMSGrade R curriculum, children are given an opportunity to engage their creative sides by participating in school-based activities like block-building, painting, writing and colouring as well as well extra-curricular programmes in the form of sports & excursions.

Some places of interest that our Grade R learners have visited include: the La Mercy orphanage, the animal farm, the KwaDukuza Museum and the Sappi Resource Centre.

The Grade R syllabus is integrated with our Islamic Studies programme in order to inculcate a sound value system from a young age.

Zander thrilled the crowd and had them in stitches with his opening act.

Many members of the audience were moved to tears as Mello performed the song “My heart will go on” from the movie Titanic, dedicated to her dear friend, the late Naushaad Khan.

The show was thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees.

Mello thanked everyone who attended for their support and kind words of praise. She looks forward to staging her second show “He had it coming” at Sibaya in the near future.

The fasting period in which Tamil people or Tamilians refer to as Puratassi started on Friday, 18 September and ends on Saturday, 17 October 2015.

A c c o r d i n g t o t h e S h r i Vaithianatha Easvarar Alayam, only fruits, vegetables and grains will be eaten as part of the fasting. (No meat ea t ing , sexual abstinence, not smoking and drinking are highly encouraged). The fast is dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, who is known to reside on an ocean of milk; is known as the preserver and is the deity in charge of the mode of pure goodness.

Pitri Paksh (commonly called Pithar Pakk) is the remembrance of departed ancestor souls by paying respect through prayers, fasting, performance of special rituals, chanting and austerity.

According to the Hindu Maha Sabha, Pitri Paksh starts on the morn ing o f Monday , 28 September and ends on the evening of Monday, 12 October 2015 period of a fortnight.

Offering of water and flowers are common. The origin of the observance is wide and varying because of the diversity of the religion, the many languages, dialects and beliefs.

Of the Shaktis, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Durga and Kali are worshipped with great r e v e r e n c e . T h e i r remembrance is similar to that of Pitri (ancestor) souls.

Another aspect is the r e m e m b r a n c e o f elevated souls that left a legacy of remembrances resulting from selfless service. Many religious

Puratassi and austerityconfidence, and overall well being which are essential in getting good marks and being able to maintain a resilient mindset.

The moral lessons of Puratassi: This helps Tamils to understand the plight of the poorest of the poor and makes them tolerant and c h a r i t a b l e t o w a r d s t h e underprivileged;

Puratassi as it is: discipline practised during this time helped improve quality of life. Devotees o f f e r p r a y e r s f o r G o d ' s intervention in crime, violence, HIV and AIDS, TB and other atrocities destroying thousands of lives in this country and around the world.

• The Tamil community has a choice between three different types of fasts during the month of Puratass i (pronounced as Paartharsee);

Devotees are to eat a controlled number of meals, all of which have to be vegetarian for the entire month;

Devotees eat only fruit and drinks milk until the evening, when they have a light meal;

The strictest of all fasts is dry fasting when a person does not consume any water or food from 6am to 6pm for the 30 days and

Another option, apart from fasting, is when Tamils are also expected to pray and meditate throughout the month.

Pitri Paksh and ancestral remembrance

leaders such as Krishna, Rama, Abraham, Buddha, Christ, Sankaracharya and Mohammed have left the jewels of their thoughts, the vibrations which s t i l l i n d u c e s " s p i r i t u a l goosebumps" to their followers, devotees and admirers.

During this period, people generally do not start new projects, buildings or start i n v e s t m e n t s . M a r r i a g e s , engagements, pujas or occasions of merriment are generally postponed until a sufficiently long period has elapsed, usually a year, of their dear departed ones.

The important thing in observance of Pitri is love, respect and good wishes for those

souls. Whatever the method, be it p rayers , pu jas , sa t sangs , meditation, fasting, offering flowers and water, it should be done with immense love and not blind duty. We should remember them for what they have done to make this place a better place to live, or the benefits derived from their role.

In conclusion, people should practice the art of being detached, but loving to their close relations. They should practice the remembrance of God at all times and more so in their mature years of life. This practice w i l l a s s i s t y o u i n t h e remembrance of God when you are leaving your body.

I am utterly disappointed by the response I got from a Telkom employee at their Stanger offices at Ushaka Mall.

I was told by a Telkom employee that “we don't accept payments here.” I had an interaction with family members and they were told that they had to pay at the Post Office. When you come to pay you must wait until they attend to customers who are applying for new lines or contracts. They get commission on sales so nobody wants to help you when you want to pay.

Grove End were crowned the Natdale Insulation Contractors volleyball champions after defeating a lack-lustre Warriors Sport in the finals hosted by The K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association last Thursday at the association courts.

The final was a boring one sided affair with Grove End showing sheer dominance over W a r r i o r s . M a n - o f - t h e -tournament, Vinnie Singh together with skipper of Grove End, Neven Baldeo, once again set the courts on fire on Thursday leaving Warriors flat-footed with their deadly Bazookas. KwaDukuza Volleyball Club received a major boost when Natdale Insulation Contractors sponsored the knockout tournament for corporate league teams. Revy Harryprasad, convenor of the Corporate League, was over the moon with the announcement and said that he was deeply indebted with the CEO of Natdale Insulation Contractors, Booby Naidoo for his magnanimous gesture and

winner after winner with relative ease. Warriors had to rely solely on the mistakes made by Grove End to keep their score-board ticking. Grove End raced through to a comfortable 25-18 win in the first set.

In the second set, Grove End basically put in their so called 'B' squad and even that squad played better than Warriors. They raced to another easy 25-17 victory to seal the fate of the Shakaskraal based Warriors Sport and claim the inaugural Natdale Insulation Contractors knock-out cup.

Grove End have been unbeatable in 2015 season in all competitions. For their victory, Grove End waltzed away with a

cool R2000 which would have come handy as they left for Cape Town last week (together with KSST) to participate in the South African inter-club championship.

Warriors Sport had to settle for R1000 for their efforts.

At the presentation, Isaac Abraham, president of KDVA said: “We are indeed excited to have joined forces with Natdale Insulation Contractors and trust that our relationship will grow for years to come.

In o ther news, Manor overcame a rampant and rejuvenated Manor Old Boys for the 3rd and 4th play-off in an all Manor affair. Mark Padiachee and Ahmed Essack wereoutstanding for Manor as they helped them to a 25-21, 25-16 victory.

All matches for this Thursday has been postponed as we celebrate Heritage Day whilst the Muslims celebrate Eid.

The winning Natdale KO squad, Grove End

KDVA to host the Natdale corporate KOhis vision of keeping the beautiful game alive amongst the older generation.

The corporate knockout tournament, which had to be postponed twice due to the inclement weather, will now get underway on Wednesday, September 23 (tonight) with the semi-final scheduled for Wednesday, September 30 and the final and play-offs taking place on Wednesday October 7.

All males participating in the corporate tournament must be 35 years or older. There will be no age restriction on females participating in the corporate knockout tournament. The entry fee for corporate teams is R300. Trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up with braai-packs provided for all participants.

Teams will be drawn into two pools with the winner and

runner up qualifying for the semi-final.

Grove End will start of the tournament as favourites as they have remained undefeated in 2015. There will be stiff competition from Manor and Frendz who can cause an upset on any day. Teachers will have to pull out all tricks from their hats if they want to advance to the next round.
