    Mr. Ramirez inspires. Aer school

hours, I walked into the schoolbuilding to conduct an interviewand immediately felt at ease. Thesecurity sta directed me to theadministrave area. It was lled withthe usual countertop, paperwork, ling cabinets, publicaons, postersand so forth. Mr. Ramirez warmlygreeted me and invited me into hisoce. It had been a long day for himbut he said this was the norm; hewould stay unl late to answer emailsand do follow-ups. I sat at the smallconference table directly across hisdesk computer, documents, photos, and an un-opened bole of Vita Coco.It appeared as it was part of his dcorrather than a beverage ready to drink.

Experts say a principals oce oensays a lot about their leadership style.

Armando Ramirez is one of 5 siblingsraised in Brooklyn, NY of Colombianparents. While his life story is lledwith a myriad of disappointments andironies -- it is the epiphany of believingin oneself, and the dedicaon ofposive role models that helped himovercome stascal disadvantages. He has been an educator for the last23 years and was asked to work asthe Principal at James Monroe HighSchool since last year. Everything heslearned over the years, he tries toshare with his students.

Ironically, Armandos school dayswere spent constantly at the principalsoce. An average D student, achievingthe bare minimum, he had no purpose he was just going through themoons to nish high school. Whilehis grade point average was low, hismother asked him what college hewas going to aend aer graduaon.College? None. Movaon? None.SAT scores? Low. Mom would not takethis for an answer. Firmly, she advisedhim to enroll, he had to do something.

He managed to aend Stony BrookUniversity. Aer a short term, hebecame homesick and dropped out.He got into the truck business and was

doing fairly well. Deep down, he alwayswanted to pursue criminal jusce, sohe enlisted in the Police Academy but3 weeks into the program, he brokehis leg. Breaking my leg was thebest break of my life Mr. Ramirezhumorously admits. At 22, he felt hischances in life were doomed. Hopelessand discouraged once again, he didntknow where to turn. It was during thisme that he recalls meeng one of hislife role-models, Dr. Betsy Balzano.

Dr. Balzano is an educator who tothis day, Armando looks up to as hisguardian angel, his inspiraon. Besideshis mother, who molded his characterand made him into the man that he is

today, Betsy caused a big impact in hislife. All it took was for her to keenlyencourage him scholascally, to showinterest in his future. She checked hisschedule and draed one that wouldmeet his goals. While recounngthe life-changing moment her wordscreated inside of him, Armandobecame wisul and reecve. To thisday, as an adult, echoing her wordscauses a sensive emoon. She toldhim, I believe in you!

His encounters with Dr. Balzanoprovoked in him the desire tosucceed and to not fail. He becamean avid researcher and surroundedhimself with intelligent and posive

individuals. His grade point averagebegan to increase. He went on to TheCollege at Brockport and completedhis degree in Criminal Jusce witha concentraon in Correcon and aCercaon in Elementary Educaon. He had received a chance in life, abreak in life!

Armando Ramirez connued to moveforward. He did his student teaching atthe rst bilingual school in Rochester,Henry Hudson School No. 28. Shortlyaer, he made of Rochester his home. His career took o as an educator;he became enamored with childrensliterature and completed a Mastersfrom SUNY Brockport as a Reading

Teacher. He also got interested andbecame involved in the polics ofschool. He parcipated and completedthe Urban Administrave Program atSt. John Fisher where he completeda second Masters in EducaonalLeadership.

Over the years, Mr. Ramirez has workedas a 1st grade and 6th grade teacher,Assistant Principal at Roberto ClementeSchool No. 8, was an instrumental partas the Director of the transion teamfrom James Madison High School toJoseph C. Wilson Foundaon Academyand helped maintain the delity ofthe programs unl the closing of JohnMarshall High School.

Most recently, state tesng and otherassessments revealed that JamesMonroe High School was a high riskschool for closure. This school holds thehighest percentage of Lano studentsenrolled and of pregnancies. When hewas asked to take over a failing school, this was not new to Mr. Ramirez;however, the challenge is to turn itaround so that it doesnt transion forclosure, rather to re-engage students, and make it a model program for theCity School District.

Informaon is powerful! saysArmando, Providing a place wherestudents and parents feel welcome is

key. Mr. Ramirez feels that changes

have already started and thatresults are being noced. With therevamped Parent Center, aendanceaudited, establishing a graduaonplan for every student, buildingcapacity, empowering his sta andencouraging students has been hugeimprovements. Being customerservice oriented, and maintaininga Student Support Center has beencrical, also partnering up with othercommunity programs to name afew, Ibero (Padres Compromedos),RAPA (Introducon to Theatre), LasDamitas (girls support group), Hillside,Center for Youth and BrockportsETS (Educaonal Talent Search). Mr.Ramirez empathecally shares that he

wants his students to have a suburbanexperience, for teachers, other cityresidents and students to aspire toaend Monroe.

The deliberate changes are aributedto a great team of educators, ocesta, parents and the studentsthemselves. During his journey,Armando has encountered many morepeople who just like Betsy believe inhim. He is appreciave and respeculto School Superintendent, Dr. BolgenVargas, for entrusng him with thischallenge. Other people of inuencewho have helped shaped his careerhave been: Brenda Pacheco (formerSchool of the Arts principal), Anibal

Soler (East High School principal) andAnita Murphy (Deputy Superintendentfor Administraon and Operaons anda phenomenal advocate for Lanos).Always surround yourself withintelligent people, he repeats andadvises his students.

The kid that did not see any future, the youth who thought he had lost itall when he dropped out of college, the man who shied careers to ndhis passion could be inside any of us.All that is needed is to allow othersto help in our journey and believeenough in oneself to know that me isimportant. The Vita Coco drink on hisdesk could just be a symbol. It could

be a reminder of where we come fromculturally or maybe that despite howlife treats you, if you open up the canyou can taste that it is nutrient-packedand lled with amazing avor!

Armando Ramirez is married to MariaVazquez-Ramirez who he lovinglyavows is the back-bone of his family;they have two children, Telvanise, 23and Alexander, 7.

It is interesng that as parents we tend to make somany plans for our children the minute we know weare pregnant; from the clothes our child will wearwhen they leave the hospital, to the careful seleconof the car seat we will purchase. But yet we almostall fail to make the same detailed plans for our death. When I reect on the recent passing of my 90 yearold mother, although funeral arrangements andgranng her last wishes were important, I found herlast days spent at hospice to be the most prominentpart of her journey and the ones that impacted meand my family the most. The truth is that death is a

natural process that we will all have to face, so whynot plan for it now?

According to a recent study on hospice facilies, families dont usually get the support they need.Joan Teno, the author of the study, states that mostdoctors dont recommend hospice and when theydo its usually too late. This became more apparentduring the three weeks I was in hospice with mymother. Many of our friends and family did notunderstand why she was in hospice for so long or thetransions my mother was experiencing; which inreality is the purpose of hospice care.

So what is hospice care? Hospice is a comprehensiveprogram with services for people who are seriouslyill and not expected to recover. Hospice care providesmedical services, emoonal support, and spiritual

resources. When you decide to be cared for bya hospice program, you acknowledge that your

treatment goals will shi from doing everythingpossible to cure your condion to keeping youcomfortable and improving your quality of lifewhile you are dying. Hospice care also helps familymembers manage the praccal details and emoonalchallenges of caring for a dying loved one.

Hospice services are not intended to speed upor prolong the dying process. They focus insteadon relieving pain and other symptoms. Hospicecaregivers are concerned with enhancing thequality of remaining life by keeping you as alert andcomfortable as possible in a familiar environmentwith family and friends. And this was exactly my

mothers journey during her stay with hospice care.

During my mothers last days, my siblings and I wereequal parcipants in her care with the guidance andsupport of the hospice sta. We chose to do hospicecare in a facility which was designed to ease our staythere from a private bathroom to a laundry room. Wewere able to receive and visit with family and friendsthat came to say their goodbyes to my mother; it wasthe closest place to her being in her own home.

Hospice care also includes helping your familyand friends through their grief aer you die. Mostprograms connue to provide bereavement servicesfor family and friends, such as support groups andcounseling, for at least a year aer a loved onesdeath.

If you have never given hospice a thought or ifsomeone in your family is terminally ill or elderly,

start the conversaon today. Death and dying isnot the most pleasant conversaon to have butit is inevitable, so why not make the best of thatjourney.

If you would like more informaon on hospice care, talk to your primary doctor. If youd like to learn moreof my personal experience, send your quesons and/

FiNaNCes & me LAS FINANZAS & YO

    Translated by Marcos Sanago

Many people started the year makingresoluons to improve their health, social welfare, reach established goals, improve employment and family, but perhaps no one contemplates onimproving personal nances becausethey do not have the tools to do it.

On occasion, people hear the wordbudget and tend to visualize it as adicult concept, when in reality youcan take it from the simple to thecomplex. Planning a budget gives youthe opportunity to establish priories, sasfy other needs pending, and createreserves or savings for conngencies inan urgent and/or unseen situaon.

Although we do not visualize it this way,to establish a monthly budget gives usthe opportunity to improve, or helpus to reach those resoluons that weestablished at the beginning of the year. For example-if we improve our personalnances we improve our economic wellbeing and provide peace of mind for ourself condence among other things. Itwill also project towards other goals, and make use and judgment of ourmonthly income and cash ow. As you

see, to have healthy nances helps us inthese and other aspects of our daily life.

Any person has the capacity to establisha monthly budget without worryinghow much their job allows them toearn in monthly income. Starng fromthis premise we should focus on thefollowing aspects:

Idenfy our xed income such aspensions and wages, and equally ourvariable income such as commissions orpayments for professional services. Idenfy our monthly expenses suchas mortgage, medical insurance, rent, among others. Idenfy variable expenses where theamount can change from month tomonth-for example, water, electricity, cellular and telephone service, cable, credit cards, etc. Other necessary expenses such asfood, personal needs, entertainmentand miscellaneous.

Once we idenfy the above, we canvisualize what the monthly expenses areand then what we need to generate tobe able to make cuts and adjustments. On occasions I hear people say I cantsele my debts and I dont earnenough to savein my opinion thephrases are a fallacy. There is always a

way to sele debts and save.

Focus on seling smaller debts and notthe large ones -- connue the large debtswith regular payments. As soon as yousele the small debts you will see thatyour indebtedness begins to reduce. But if you focus on the large debts, the circle of indebtedness connuesand it will take longer to sele withoutcounng on the unexpected. Once yousele the small debts invest that cashon the principal of the larger debts, thatway you will save on the interest of thepending payments.

In equal form, prudently use your storeand bank credit cards; remember thatthe interest on those credit cards isexorbitant. Although credit cards oer areserve of cash in case of an emergency,be prudent with their daily use; yourcredit is your presentaon leer.

Some persons ulize a strategy toimprove their nances in the formof a consolidaon loan to sele theirdebts and keep only one debt, Danger,Cauon. This can be like the saying:Its a double edged sword. If you reallyopt for this with the premise to retainonly one debt it is feasible, but if youare not sure of this compromise youwill end up with more debt and more

    economic frustraon.

Another strategy by which I base thephrase that I dont have enough tosave is a fallacy is that we focus onunaainable goals to save in the face ofour dicult or real economic situaon. We can start to establish saving orconngency reserves by means ofsaving tools provided by banks or creditunions such as Christmas clubs, summerclubs, and cercates of deposits orsavings accounts as a simple form tostart a savings plan. The importantthing on a savings plan is to establish acontribuon no maer how small, andas soon as personal nances improve, raise the contribuon and the resources.

To accomplish your healthy personalnances is a maer of planning andtaking a rm step. If you have not doneit yet, start your personal nancialplanning today!

endeudamiento empieza a reducirse.

Tenemosla respuesta completa? No. No creoque sea.

Since throwing her hat into thepolical ring and winning a seat oncity council in 2009, at-large memberand small-business owner, JacklynOrz, has had a long list of thingsshed like to establish on her agenda. But now, going into the fourth yearof her term, she said shes learnedto take a step back and focus on theissues where she can have the mostimpact.

Some of the projects she currentlysupports involve neighborhoodrestoraon, support for small-business owners, and workforcedevelopment. Shes keeping these

issues in the forefront she said and,

yes, she does hope to hold on toher seat in the upcoming eleconbecause, according to Orz, theressll much more to be done.

I think for anyone who decidesto run for oce, you always haveideas and/or things that you believethat you can do beer, said Orz.And you come in with all of thesewonderful ideas, and that youregoing to get them all done. Then youbegin to understand the realies ofhow to properly navigate the system, and connect with the groups to workwith. Ive learned that this is how youcan have an impact on the idea thatyou were bringing forth.

I think for me, the learning was focus.

For the rst and almost even secondyear, I was trying to learn all of thesethings, and input into a number ofdierent things; yet, I didnt feel theimpact was there right away. Youhave to kind of jump in, kind of getyour feelers around to see the lay ofthe land and how things work, andthen take the opportunity to stop andfocus. And so, the last half of my termand hopefully, moving into the newterm, if I am so honored to be ableto do so, this would probably be thebiggest thing.

A Rochester nave and graduate ofWilson Magnet High School, Orz isno stranger to some of the issues that

have plagued the city during her me

in oce. As a result, she said one ofthe rst things she decided to do aerbeing elected was focus on improvingresidents quality of life.

One way to achieve this, according toOrz, was by nding ways to decreasethe number of vacant properes incity neighborhoods. Consequently, most of her eorts to date have beenspent advocang for the disposionof vacant properes in what she saidwas an aempt to raise propertyvalues, reduce criminal acvity, andmake certain areas more visuallyappealing to the public.

I have spent the last year and a half

working on what I would call quality oflife issues, stated Orz. As you cansee, in many of our neighborhoodsin the city of Rochester, we deal alot with the quality of housing interms of vacant properes, a lot ofcriminal acvity and things like that. So, in that parcular area Ive founda way to get at dealing with vacantproperes and dealing with someof those issues. I spend a lot of myme on the nancing poron of that-- how we dispose of tax delinquentproperes. So right now we areundergoing an evaluaon of limboproperes and deciding whether thatstrategy is the right thing to do. Themost important part is geng ourhands on properes so that we canmake quicker decisions.

Most recently, because of legislaonOrz supported which cies in NewYork State allow to apply for creaonof a land bank board; the city wasapproved to create a not-for-protland bank corporaon as a meansto dispose of vacant and abandonedproperes. According to Orz, thiswill be an important tool in assisngthe city in terms of re-developingneighborhoods.

Current plans for Rochesters landbank include buying an averageof 25 properes each of the rsttwo years and providing thoseto the Home Rochester Programwhich renovates and sells homesto rst-me homebuyers. Forpeople in neighborhoods with largeconcentraons of vacant properes, the impact of pung them back intothe hands of homeowners would behuge, said Orz.

Vacant properes are magnets forcriminal acvity, she stated. Theyalso hinder the property values interms of making them stagnant and/or decreasing them. Here you nowwould have, if I turn some of thoseneighborhoods into prosperingnew homeowners, or theyre gonecompletely, you now have an areawhere property values can now risebut we also have eliminated thosecriminal acvity hotspots. Ive talkedto a number of dierent residentgroups, and there is loitering; thereis actual drug-selling out of thoseplaces. There are a number of thingsthat are detrimental to quality of life.

In addion to lowering the numberof vacant properes in the city, Orzsaid there are other restoraonprojects on track to begin shortlyas well, including the long-awaitedLa Avenida project in the 14621area of Rochester. Aer being in anindeterminate state for more thana year, a condion and economicanalysis has recently been updatedfor the development project in theneighborhood and a new RFP hasbeen created which resulted in thecitys consideraon of what Orzcalled a solid proposal.

It has denitely turned a corner interms of its ability to actually occur, she said.

On top of working to restore cityneighborhoods as a whole, Orzsaid she also makes a specic eortto remain connected to the Lancommunity. As a Lana, she saidshes reminded regularly that itsimportant to remain sensive to theparcular needs of her community.

As an elected ocial I am an at-large member, so the rst thing is, Irepresent the enre city regardlessof my heritage, Orz stated. Thatbeing said obviously based on myexperiences, cultural tradions anda number of things, I can relateto some of the similaries that Ihave with a very large and growingpopulaon in the city of Rochester.I feel as though I try very hard toensure that I am bringing that to thetable when conversaons are beingheld in council chambers. So makingsure that Im not forgeng this andto bring it to the forefront is veryimportant.

Specically, Orz said she is concernedwith the lack of employment that isparcularly high in the 14621 area,as well as the 14605 area in the city, which both have high numbers ofLano residents. Its a problem shewould like to address in the nearfuture.

In those specic areas Ive foundthat 46 percent of Lanos reside in14605 and upwards of 36 percentin 14621, and they do have some ofthe highest unemployment rates, she said. So I want to start doingmore in the area of jobs. Focusingon a couple of dierent things, one is youth employment. The citydoes have a summer of opportunityprogram, and right now we are goingthrough a revamp and re-evaluaonof that program. So I think right nowis a perfect opportunity for focusingon bringing more students into thatprogram and making sure that theirexperiences are in fact rich, truemarketable experiences. We alsohave to talk about adults, and trainingand development. We need to makesure we are training them in growingelds. So, there are a number ofavenues that I want to go down inthe next term, and that is somethingI want to push forward coming up.

Not only is Orz a member of theLano community, but the small-business community as well. Shecurrently owns a State Farm InsuranceAgency in downtown Rochester, and, while keeping in mind the needsof the larger community, she saidshe would also like to advocate forbusiness owners as well.

It is a very delicate balance in manyof the things we deal with and thenalso being a business owner, statedOrz. For example, there have been

a number of controversial issues inregards to business permits and theneeds of the business communityin balance with the needs of theresidenal community. And, beinga business owner, it is dicult. Youknow, I dont want to shut downbusinesses. I dont want to make itmore dicult to do business. Butat the same me I also have to beacknowledging the needs of theresidents themselves. So, trying tocome to a compromise on thosetypes of issues is important.

In terms of spending, and how topriorize the issues she plans toaddress going forward, Orz said itwill depend on the progress that hasbeen made on projects the city hasspent money on in the past.

Tradionally, in terms of how thecity presents the budget to us, it isdepartmentalized in terms of jobs, parks, public safety, youth recreaon, etc., she said. For me, what Iam going to be doing dierentlythis me is trying not to look at itdepartmentally. One of the thingsthat Ive asked for in preparaon forthe budget season is an analysis ofhow much money has been spent foranything in a parcular area. Ill giveyou an example, which is MarketviewHeights. We have spent a lot of moneyand with that has anything changed? Is the criminal acvity down, yes orno? Is the unemployment rate up ordown in that area? Have propertyvalues increased or not in thatparcular area?

What I ancipate coming is that wevespent a boatload of cash in the areain the last ten years. Im ancipangthat unemployment is the same if notlower. I am ancipang that propertyvalues are probably at, and I amancipang that there may be a smalldecrease in criminal acvity, butthats not good enough. I dont knowexactly what this dollar gure lookslike yet, but I want to do this kind ofa comparison for this years budget, because at the end of the day, whatgood is it to spend so much moneyon making things look prey if itsnot truly eecng the social factorsthat make a thriving neighborhood. And so, Im trying to take a dierentapproach to priorize how I wouldlike to advocate for the spending ofthe dollars.

On hot-buon issues such as the citysnumerous aempts at implemennga Civilian Review Board (CRB) andwhether or not the citys new RedLight Camera program is revenue-based, Orz said there is merit toboth.

Regarding the CRB, at this pointtaking a look at appointed advocatesto address cizens concerns with theRochester Police Department (RPD) isthe next step, she said. I think that, without a doubt, there are addionalimprovements that can be made.

Were guring out how to comeup with what will make a posivechange in the process. Is it the answercompletely? No. I dont think it is. Ithink at this point I would like to seehow it works to see if it does alleviatesome of the issues.

In addion, Orz refuted anyallegaons that the city may in someway be trying to protect RPD ocersby creang the CRB.

Absolutely not, she said. It is myopinion that if there is inappropriatebehavior or acvity that it must bedealt with swily and appropriately interms of whatever disciplinary aconsneed to occur. If we have individualsthat are not providing appropriateservice and professionalism indealing with our residents, then theydenitely need to be dealt with.

As for the red light cameras, accordingto Orz, its an issue of public safetyrather than money.

It is in my eyes a public safety issue, she said. Does it bring in revenue?Yes, it does. But I really I dont see itthat way [in terms of revenues]. I thinkat the end of the day if were actuallylearning from those experiences thatit did its job.

In the end, when it comes to enteringthe race again, Orz said she has acommitment to keeping governmenttransparent; something she thinkswill help bring voters out to supporther as a democrac candidate again.

In my rst term I have fought andadvocated for open, transparentgovernment. When we talk aboutgiving the public opportunies toactually voice their opinions and be apart of the process, there were manysituaons where they have asked forthat, and I supported and advocatedstrongly for that open, engagedprocess of the community, she said.In addion, I feel as though on manyof the issues in regards to quality oflife, I have found a way to make animpact. And there are strong piecesmoving forward that I think are goingto be great tools in order to makesome real change. Lastly, when wetalk about local, minority, women-owned businesses and opportuniesgiven, I vote that way. And I thinkthats important. That you dontnecessarily just say that those thingsare important, but that you vote thatway as well.

Over the next four years, employment, as well as connuingher goal of improving the quality oflife for Rochester residents will betwo of her top priories, Orz said.

    By Dr. Yasellyn Diaz

When I was growing up I never had toworry about where the food that wasprovided on our tables came from. Igured most of it was either from ourfarm or supermarket and that was theend of the story. As an adult now withkids, it is a dierent story. Their healthhas inspired me to research more and

more about our food supply and howsafe it is. The results are shocking! Awhile ago, I started learning aboutgenecally modied organism(GMO) foods also called genecallyengineered foods (GE). Prehistoricfarmers have been selecng the mostproducve plants and seeds fromtheir domescated crops for up to10,000 years. What changed in the lastquarter of the 20th century was thatsciensts began selecng traits at theindividual gene level and controllingthe placement of certain genes in newcrops.

We should know that we are notonly talking about manipulaon of

the genec material within plantscells but also within animals, viruses

and others. This modicaon ofthe genec material has not occurnaturally as natural selecon woulddo it and instead its been done byexperimentaons in the laboratorywith the suppose purpose to makethose organisms (whether they areplants, animals or any other) strongeragainst plant and animal diseases toincrease producvity and durability of

these products in the store shelves. For example, if the purpose is to makea plant that will resist a specic insect,a gene for a parcular toxin from abacteria or insect will be incorporatedinto the food plant (whether it iscorn, soy or rice -- which are someof the most common foods that aregenecally modied). This toxin is usedas an inseccide in agriculture andwill prevent this plant to get infectedwith that specic toxin that causesthe disease in that plant. Similarulizaon of this technology is usedin case resistance to viruses is wanted.Genes from those parcular virusesare incorporated into the plants thatare most aected by them in order to

obtain immunity or make the plantsless suscepble to the disease those

    viruses may cause.

Monsanto Company which is anAmerican mulnaonal agriculturalbiotechnology corporaon, headquartered in Missouri, is a leadingproducer of genecally engineered (GE)seed and of the herbicide glyphosate, which markets under the Roundupbrand and connues to reassure that

their products are safe.If you think that there has beenresearch to prove that this is safe forhuman consumpon, lets think twiceabout it. There is research that hasdemonstrated the opposite. Just tobring an example, according to an arclepublished -- Monsanto company alongwith the US Environmental ProteconAgency (EPA) swore that the Bt-toxin,which was incorporated in the Bt-cornin 1996 from a soil bacteria- producesBt-toxina pescide that breaks openthe stomach of certain insects andkills them. They claimed that the Bt-toxin would be completely destroyedin the human digesve system and

would not have any impact on animalsand humans. An independent study

from doctors at Sherbrooke UniversityHospital in Quebec found Bt-toxin inthe blood of non-pregnant women, pregnant women tested and even infetuses! Could this be a reason why 1out of 12 children in US have a foodallergy? There are good research thatalso supports this theory.

If we consider the corn uses and

products containing corn such as beer, salad dressing, margarine, our and, ofcourse, anything that has corn syrupwe might be consuming GM productsin most of our meals. Now if we addsoy, which is found in soymilk, tofu, insome bread, some cereals, ice creamand chocolate, amongst other the listbecomes even more extensive.

This certainly becomes a topic weshould be very concerned about. Iencourage you to connue your ownresearch. In the next arcle, I willmenon some other implicaons thishas and how we can try to avoid theseproducts.

    Unl next me!

    Translated by Steve Farrington

This month in The Literary Caf, we readand analyzed one of the most bell-sellingbooks in the recent years, The Alquimist,a Story for Following your Dreams (1988),from the Brazilian writer Paolo Coehlo(born in 1947).

This book made us into explorers ofdreams and also helped us to know a bit

of Andalusia, Spain, and its pilgrimagepaths to Sanago. There is no doubt thatwith literature one can travel to othercultures and discover the many wayswhich the human being can travel to ndhim or her-self.

The Way of Saint James (Camino deSanago) is a route in Andalusia, Spain, where Sanago, the main character, starts his pilgrimage and connues unl

he arrives to the pyramids of Egyptwhere as his dreams tell him he willnd a treasure. Currently, many peopletravel the Way of Saint James, with goalsof traveling as a tourist, to get in shape,to nd themselves, and to reect.

Paolo Coelho spent long periods of mestudying alchemy in the search of thesecret of how to get gold. However, atthe end, he concludes that there are

many ways to make use of our ownalchemy to nd our own treasure thatwould be our happiness.

Sanago, in his search took us todiscover our own alchemy that refers tothe combinaon of feelings, emoons, and desires inside of us. Most likely, fromthis mix we can get gold or maybe silveror copper, that will depend on how wevalue our achievements in comparison

    with our desires.

We also found that each element isimportant in the universe in which weare part of. This means that all of thedesigns and goals of life can be beaufulif they are valued for being pieces thatform a part of a whole.

It was a grafying experience to shareopinions about The Alquimist, and to

understand the reason that made it oneof the most-read books in the world. We also discovered Paolo Coelho in thecharacter of Sanago since both areseen in the disjuncve set-up of leadinga merely religious life induced by hisparents. Nevertheless, they turn theirback on that life-plan and undertake thesearch for their own desny.

Sanago is seen as an individual ready

to give it all for the chance to followhis dreams and exemplies a modelto follow that is if we desire to ndthat treasure that we have dreamed ofnding. Reecng on our dreams andthe signs that show us our own way tofollow, made us queson what our questis and what is happiness.

The majority commented that the searchor quest is to nd our place in the world,

and others said that it was the searchfor happiness. When we spoke of themeaning of happiness some said theywere transitory states, something likethe various states of feeling.

Personally, I think that happiness is beingamazed when we nd new answers to ourexistence and to make new discoveries inour journey with those we love.

    I love movies.I love theescape fromthe real worldfeeling I getwhen I watcha great movie,e s p e c i a l l y

when thatmovie connectswith me like themust-see lmCounterpunch

    did.

Counterpunch is the story of Emilio, ayoung boxer struggling to overcomesome personal issues with the helpof some good folks which include hisuncle Frank. Recently, I had the honorof interviewing one of my favoriteactors, Oscar Torre, one of the lmsstars, who plays Emilios uncle.

Not only is Torre, who is a Cuban-American like myself, a great actor,

but most important, hes a greatperson. Humble, and down to earth,Oscar Torre took me out of his busyschedule to talk to me about Lanosin Hollywood, his cra and even oersaspiring actors and actresses, somegreat advice.

SC, WHT D YU THiNK F lTiNS iNHllYWD TDY?

Theres been huge progress. In the past, way before my me, Lanos wouldplay maids and criminals. And it wasnteven the lead criminals, it was the lilecriminals. The types of roles we get noware much bigger. I think whats helped

is very solid actors who have beenable to play all sorts of roles. AnthonyQuinn, Rita Moreno, going way back, then, more recently, actors such asJimmy Smitz, Edward James Olmos andAndy Garcia who have played roles notwrien for Lanos. They have made itmuch easier for someone like me whohas come more recent, to be able toaudion and have opportunies thatthey didnt have inially.

So, I think it goes a long way, and itwill keep geng beer as we get morewriters. We need Lano writers. The

more Lano writers we get, the beerwrien roles for Lanos are gonnabe because then you have peoplewho understand the dierences inour cultures, even among ourselves, theres dierences. For example, aCuban from Miami and a Cuban fromNew York or a Cuban from LA wil l speak

in a dierent dialect. So, imagine allthe naonalies, once we get morewriters to understand the dierencesin the dierent Lano cultures -- thatwill be a plus. And we are the numberone minority right now, so that in itselfis money power, and it goes a longway because at the end of the day,its a business, and if you can showthat your business makes money, then Hollywood is interested in doingbusiness with you.

Many LA VOZ readers will rememberyou as Santo from the CBS showCane; however, one of my favoritecharacters youve played is UncleFrank in the lm Counterpunch, where

your nephew Emilio, a boxer, played byAlvaro Orlando, struggles with mentalillness. I really like how the lm wasnot afraid to confront an illness oenoverlooked and shunned in todayssociety.

The script for Counterpunch waswrien by Alvaro, who plays Emilioand the movie is loosely based onhis life. It was co-wrien by Director,Kenneth Casllo. The awareness ofmental illness has come a long way butI sll think that were far from wherewe need to be. Theres sll a sgmaof suering from depression or anyform of mental illness. Many peopledont want to take medicaon because

they feel that they can ght it on theirown and it becomes a sad story, and itdoesnt have to be that struggle if yound the right medicaon. I think thereneeds to be more awareness, moreeducaon on a mainstream level butpeople are afraid to be labeled and tohave that sgma.

scar, te the readers a tte aout whatgoes nto preparng for a roe, for exampe, for Unce Frank.

I see a role and I try to nd what Iknow about this person, what arethe similaries that I have with thischaracter and I try to nd that. I cantell you like in Santos case, Santo is

a totally dierent character than me,but I did know people like that, whohad just come from Cuba. So you lookfor things that you can idenfy withand then you nd triggers, thingsyou can emoonally connect within the character. In Santos case, hismother was a big thing. Just like inCounterpunch, the mother was a bigpart. Im very close to my mother.

Ill give you an example, in that scenein Counterpunch where I walk in thehospital and I see my mother and Ibreak down, I had gone through thatexact same thing ve months beforewith my mom when she had surgeryand I walked in the room, except

that I didnt break down with my realmom, I cried aerwards. But when I

was shoong that scene and I walkedin and saw the character of my momlying in bed, the moment I kissed her, something happened, it was my momI connected with, and thats what youlook for as an actor, to connect withthe material.

When a fm s reeased, peope see the fnshed, poshed product. Can you gve the readersa persona account of what ts ke for youehnd the scenes?

I met the Director of Counterpunch,Kenneth Casllo at a party; MauricioMendoza introduced me to the him. They had a table read and we readthe script and I wasnt reading thecharacter I played, I read the characterthat Steven Bauer (Scarface) played, they didnt see me as the characterI played. They didnt think I was rightfor that character because they hadseen me in Cane so they saw me morelike the Steven Bauer character and Ithought no, no, Im the uncle, I know

this character; I just felt an emoonalconnecon. Some characters just hityou and you know you can play them,so aer the read was over I sent thedirector and Alvaro an email tellingthem Id really like to play the uncle ifthey made the movie, and I got a replywhich said that they saw me more asthe Steven Bauer character.

And thats the thing, its hardsomemes to break that idea of howsomeone sees you. They had seenme in Cane and they didnt see me asthe uncle, you know a good guy. So Isent them a leer explaining why theyshould consider me for the uncle andwhy I should play the part and how

if that part wasnt played right thecharacter wouldnt be likeable, but theleer didnt do it. So a year later, aerthey secured nancing for the movie, they had me read for the uncle and forthe character of the boxing promoterin the movie. So, I worked really hardpreparing for the uncle. I knew I hadto do the uncle beer. I had the rstaudion then I got a call back and theysaid to come read for the uncle and Igot the role, and all that just to get therole. So its a lot that goes on, a lot ofpreparaons.

Whats one thng that heps get you n the zonewhen earnng aout a character?

When Im driving to an audion I tryto listen to music that my characterwould listen to. When I was doingCane I listened to a lot of Cubanmusic; obviously, youre not theperson youre playing but you try tohave as many thoughts and try to getas close as possible to this personwhile maintaining your sanity andunderstanding what this personslifestyle is like.

Whats a day n the fe of scar Torre ke?

I wake up late if Im not audioning orshoong; I go have lunch, mostly atthe same place, then I go to the gym.Aerwards Ill read a script, book, or

aend meengs for projects that Imworking on or developing with other

lmmakers. I try to have dierentprojects going on at the same mebecause you never know which one isgoing to happen rst. I like the idea thatI have some control over my career andIm not sing waing for that perfectrole to be given to me. Later at night Illwatch a lm. Many mes I choose the

lm based on what Im working on. Imalways looking for inspiraon, ideas. Then late at night, aer midnight, iswhen I work on my characters. I tendto feel more creave when its quietand everyone is sleeping. I really lovehaving a roune but I honestly have tosay that no two days look alike in mybusiness.

scar, i saw your Faceook page scar Torre, ike how you use soca meda to network, teme aout that.

I use Facebook and Twier to postvideos, trailers, info., etc. Thats part ofmarkeng and thats a valuable assetthat actors or any arsts nowadays

have that they didnt have in the past, the Internet. A few years back I starredin an episode of Cold Case whereI played a baseball star from Cubawho came to the U.S. on a ra and Iposted the scenes from that episodeon Facebook and YouTube. Somebodysaw that, there was a lm that wasbeing cast called Legacy, and they werelooking for someone specic for one ofthe lead roles in the lm. Someone sawmy scenes that I had posted and sentthem to the director and I ended upgeng the role. But, that would havenever happened if I hadnt put thevideo on Facebook.

scar, te the readers aout Eene eene

    ney oe.

This is a lm premiering March 7th atthe Miami Internaonal Film Fesval.I play Jimmy, a powerful South Beachclub owner, who is very much into theparty scene. It was a challenging role forme to play because on paper he is veryunlikeable and Im nothing like him.It was my job to nd the similariesand the humanity in the character.Hopefully I accomplished that.

Te me aout your drectora deut.
