Supplementary Table 1 Allometric relationships between leaf length (L), width (W) and the leaf area (A)
in primary leaf and trifoliate. For trifoliate, L and W of the terminal leaflet were used. As all leaflets were not
simultaneously fallen, the relationships were determined for leaves that have three leaflets, two leaflets or one leaflet. When the leaves had no terminal leaflet, the lateral leaflet was used.
Regression r n
Primary leaf A = 1.21 + 0.75 x L x W 0.98 107
Trifoliate with three leaflets A = -5.58 + 1.97 x L x W 0.99 571
Trifoliate with two leaflets A = -3.82 + 1.32 x L x W 0.99 1717
Trifoliate with one leaflet A = -1.94 + 0.66 x L x W 0.98 1740
Each leaf was scanned and the projected area was analyzed with the public domain NIH Image program
(The U.S. National Institutes of Health, http://rsb. info.nih.gov/nih-image/). r indicates Pearson's correlation
coefficient for correlation of leaf area with leaf length and width.
