Waikato Arabian Horse ClubStud Tour 2013Report by: Natasha Guest • Photographs by: Leanne Webster

On a sunny day in May 2013 30 like-minded people gathered at Ken McGrath and Melanie Barker’s property in Owairaka Valley Road, Te Awamutu to begin the day looking at some Arabian horses.

After a brief introduction and welcome from the property owners we were ushered down the 14 acre property for the start. Melanie had very kindly paired her horses up in each paddock, each pair being related as either full sisters or ¾. But it was resident stallion Arahi Supremo (Waimeha Mandate/Arahi Amiria) who did his best to steal the show, putting on a proud tail high display of Arabian Heritage.

A visit to Mel & Ken’s run off block followed where we met some of the progeny of “Primo” as he is known at home. Arahi Courtship and Arahi Zinzan were first to greet us both being by Primo. The presence of Zinny was evident; it was hard to take your eyes off him as he pranced in front of this throng of new admirers however it was 6 month old Arahi Peso (Buck) who stole the show this time. With his deep red hue he seemed to just glow, basking in the adoration of those around him.

A walk down the block introduced us to the remainder of the progeny as well as Ken’s pride and joy (and the highlight of attendee Wendy Fowler’s visit!) 2 standardbreds currently involved in the harness scene, Oto Invasion and Le Lua Invasion. While nearby kind babysitter Arahi Ari (Waimeha Mandate/Arahi Amiria) supervised the young stock in one paddock while mares and foals waited patiently in the far back. The kind unflappable nature of Ari was evident as attempts to make his young charges show off their paces were met by a roll of his eyes and a desperate search for treats amongst the people gathered at his fence.

Afterwards we were treated with a visit to Delight Arab Horse Stud with owners Stu & Lin Cottle. In the front paddock where well known endurance stallion Ngapa Joussif is buried, young stallion Delights DJ Zarif (Cyden Sun/Delights Estelle) showed off his majestic trot, displaying a proud Arabian attitude to the gathered crowd. In the next paddock, Monique Charteris showed off some progeny produced by Delight Arabians, gorgeous mare Delights Stardom stood to attention with one eye at all times on the gathering group.

Lin had organised her paddocks by age and sex. Having one of my own by Cyden Sun (Ngapa Joussif/Ngapa Ayda) I mentioned to my friend how much the paddock of mares looked like my Manana!

With the majority going back through the lineage to Cyden Sun’s sire Ngapa Joussif the likeness to my competitive little pony was evident in the eager faces and high tail carriage. Stu Cottle proved his worth in the gelding paddock running up and about the hills to get the boys moving. One gorgeous chestnut was clearly related to my Arahi Tahi (Ranaarb/Arahi Amiria) as he preferred to make friends with his pursuer as opposed to run with the mob! I later found out they were both by the same stallion.

A mob of Arabians in full flight is an impressive sight and the Delight Arabian mares proved no exception. They flew over the ground, up and down the hill in perfect unison. Seeming to enjoy the attention from the crowd below, settling only when we disappeared from sight on the back of Stu Cottle’s flat deck truck.

Driving up the farm we were greeted by young stallion Delights Crystal King and company. Again like their predecessors once pursued by Stu they flew into action, racing up and down the paddock, tails high.

We then moved on to what was to be the highlight of my day, meeting the sire of my favourite horse Tahi, the 27 year old grand stallion Ranaarb (AU) (Rasham/Liquid Amber). Even at 27 Ranaarb commanded respect. Meeting this stallion it is easy to see where his progeny get their even temperaments from. The kindness in his face was evident as he quietly surveyed the waiting crowd. At 27 he was beyond the prancing and performance put on by Primo, Zarif and Crystal King however there was a cheeky glint in his eye giving evidence to some mischief created in the past. At 27 he was still beautiful.

The stud tour ended at this point and we were driven back to the Homestead for a cup of tea and a gossip. Thanks were given to Mel, Ken, Stu and Lin who had kindly opened their gates to allow us to view their pride and joy. I know, I for one, went home with a couple of extra horses added to my equine wish list!

Footnote: Not long after this tour, Lin Cottle announced via social media that Ranaarb (AU) had been put to sleep. At 27 he wasn’t coping with the harsh winters the way he had previously and the hard decision was made to put him to rest. He will be missed. RIP old boy.

WAHO AWARD WINNER 2013by Melville Gubb

AA MYSTIC CHARM was bred by Melville Gubb of Araleigh Arabian Stud and is a Bold Fyre (US) daughter out of the great broodmare AA Mystique by Gai Cadet (US). AA Mystic Charm (Charm) is an attractive and athletic grey 11 year old Mare and has been a great ambassador for the Arabian breed proving herself both in the show ring and in the endurance field.

Charm has something special, a family and visitor’s favourite from birth. In 2005 her first National Show preparation was done, only to be shut out of her 3 year old class on a technicality. She went on to win Senior Classic Head, and was represented in both of her parents’ progeny 1st placings. At the 2010 National Championships in Christchurch Charm was a Top 5 Qualifier.

Charm started her endurance career as a 5 year old. Her go forward, independent attitude, inherited from her Sire has served her well. Her regular rider, Rose Revell, feels that she was born to go the distance of endurance.

To date she has completed over 2300 endurance kilometres. She has won a CEI* 90km and Best Conditioned, completed four 120 CEI** rides with a 1st placing and Best Conditioned at the recent 2013 North Island Championships, two 4th placings, and a qualifier. In her first attempt at a 160km CEI*** ride at the 2012 North Island Championships Charm was 2nd in a competitive time of 9 hours 53 minutes. Two weeks later Charm entered the show ring at the NZ Arab Horse Breeders’ North Island Championships held in Hawera, and was awarded the Reserve Champion Mare title and placed in all three of her riding classes with a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

We at Araleigh Stud consider this to be our greatest achievement in the 50 years that we have existed – a feat never been done before. We consider AA Mystic Charm to be an excellent ambassador for the Arabian breed and a worthy recipient of the WAHO Award.

2013 NZAHBS BRIAN ROSSYOUNG ACHIEVER AWARD WINNER

CHARLOTTE WADSWORTH of Blenheim is the recipient of the NZAHBS Brian Ross Young Achiever Award for 2013.

Charlotte purchased MF Zanbuck (AKA Lily) in 2010 as her second purebred mare. The reason for purchase was to allow her to compete two horses at Endurance and CTR rides. Where the rides were on a single day, Lily was often ridden by a friend of Charlotte’s.

Charlotte heavily campaigned her other purebred mare (Avaasha) and Lily was kept as her second mount. After Charlotte and Avaasha rode for New Zealand in the Trans Tasman Endurance competition, Charlotte needed another challenge and she decided that it was Lily’s turn to go out and compete at a few things.

Charlotte likes a number of different disciplines and she has found that Lily is versatile enough to be competitive in these disciplines. In March Lily attended her first ever show – the Rai Valley A&P show where they received Reserve Champion Novice A ring pony, Champion Rider 14-15 years and also won the Rai Valley Challenge Trophy, which is a unity class with a 90cm jump included.

At Easter Charlotte and Lily competed at the National Endurance and CTR Championships where they won the Junior CTR class and across all CTR classes won best timed rider and best presented.

During the winter Charlotte focused on dressage with Lily and the pair won all 5 training tests they rode at the Marlborough Winter series.

Charlotte and Lily competed at the Tasman District Inter schools competition at the end of winter and did well. There were approximately 60 riders competing, and the pair achieved overall 1st in games, and overall 5th equal in the dressage component.

Lily has now been registered with ESNZ for a dressage start and over Labour weekend they competed at the Marlborough Dressage Champs where the pair won each of their Level 1 tests and received the Champion Open Pony trophy for ponies competing up to Level 3. They also rode a Level 2 test for the Young Rider award and achieved a creditable 3rd.

In November they rode at the Canterbury A&P show and placed 2nd and 3rd in the Level 1 dressage, following up at the beginning of December with wins at the Marlborough Dressage Summer Series to take out the Champion Level 1 Pony title along with a 2nd at Level 2 pony.

The pair also competed in the show ring and won the Novice Purebred Arabian class at the South Island Premier show in December, placed 2nd in the Manners class which included derivatives and in the Arabian costume class at the Canterbury A&P show they took 1st place.

At home, Lily is also used to teach people to ride. During the New Year the pair will attend the Dressage Nationals, the CTR South Island Championships, the South Island Arabian Championships and following up over winter with some Show Hunter.
