Death from West Nile VirusReported in Central NYSYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Health officialsin central New York are reporng thedeath of a person from infecon withthe West Nile virus.

They say the death is the first thisyear in Onondaga County. The paentwas as older person, but no otherinformaon is being released.

The mosquito-borne virus is generallynot deadly and many of those infectednever develop symptoms. But it cancause serious illness in the very young, old and people with compromised

immune systems. The symptomsinclude fever, headaches and sff ness.

A case in the county earlier in Augustresulted in an adult being brieflyhospitalized but expected to fullyrecover.

The state health department saidtesng has found the virus in hundredsof mosquito pools around the state thisyear. There have been five reportedillnesses.

This summer girls in YWCA’s GirlsInc. Teen Program turned intoentrepreneurs. The girls were inspired

by a presentaon by AKA Sorority’sJoscelyne Wilson. Then they decidedto put what they learned into acon.

“Her words inspired us to think of so many fun business ideas. It wasdifficult to choose,” said Abby Casey, age 15, vising from New Jersey.

However, when Casey and a relavefound a soap making kit at a localgarage sale, the girls in the campunanimously agreed it was the way togo.

The girls calculated their needs andbought supplies using a grant from theSyracuse Zonta Foundaon. The teenssay they had fun learning how to make

unique soaps using dyes, fragrances, and items which added an arsc flairto their signature soap. The groupmade enough inventory to recentlystock a booth at Syracuse’s DowntownFarmers’ Market.

“I was surprised people bought oursoap,” said 15-year-old Keonna Wrenof Syracuse. “Business was good. We’llbe able to cover our expenses andthen some.”

The teens say they plan to use theirprofits to purchase an addional funevent or experience for their groupthis summer.

“We even had a Buddhist monk buy

soap from us,” the girls reported. “Hewas so nice, he even blessed us.”

2 Pa.-Based Health Systems Plan Gas Drilling StudyELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) — Two Pennsylvania-

based health systems plan to tap theelectronic records of their paents tostudy possible eff ects of living neargas wells drilled in the Marcellus Shaleregion.

Guthrie Health of Sayre and GeisingerHealth Systems of Danville are in theearly stages of planning the researchinto how people might be aff ectedby wells, some which use hydraulicfracturing. The technology knownas “fracking” involves pumping largevolumes of water and chemicals into

the ground to free gas.

The organizaons said Monday thatasthma, cardiovascular disease andcancer may be among the first thingsstudied. They are now working on abudget and how to pay for the project.

In the spring, Pennsylvania lawmakerseliminated $2 million of funding thatincluded a statewide health registryto track respiratory problems, skincondions, stomach ailments andother illnesses potenally related togas drilling.

David Carey, director of Geisinger’sWeis Center for Research, toldThe Associated Press in May thatpolicymakers need more solidinformaon about the potenal healtheff ects of drilling and that some of thedebate over the issue has been drivenmore by emoon than science.

He said companies like Geisinger areposioned well to contribute given thelarge volume of informaon they haveabout the health of people living in theregion. Geisinger alone has 2.6 million

paents in its system.

Some results of the new collaboraoncould be available within a year, withother elements of the study playingout over years, the companies said.

The Marcellus Shale covers large partsof Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio andWest Virginia.

Guthrie also operates hospitals in NewYork’s Southern Tier, where the state isconsidering allowing fracking.

By George Brown

In a dusty old ac in Chaanooga,Tennessee, Stephon Tull wasrummaging through dilapidated boxesle there by his father many yearsbefore, when he came across aninteresng find.

In one of the baered boxes was anaudio reel marked, “Dr. King interview,Dec. 21, 1960.”

“I’m a rummager, a packrat,” said Tull.“That piqued my interest.”

Tull acquired a reel-to-reel playerand listened to what sounded like hisfather interviewing Dr. Marn LutherKing Jr. about nonviolence and the civilrights movement.

“I could not believe what I washearing,” said Tull.

Tull’s father had grown up in Tennesseeduring the years of racial tension, oppression, and the so-called “JimCrow” segregaon laws.

“He planned on wring a book on how

bad things were back in that era,” saidTull, but he never finished it, “He fellill, and is now in Hospice care.”

Tull’s father’s recorded his conversaonwith King three years before the civilrights leader delivered his famous “IHave a Dream” speech in Washington, four years before President Lyndon B.Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act intolaw and eight years before King wasassassinated in Memphis, across thestate from where Tull’s father lived.

In the interview, King can clearly beheard discussing his definion of nonviolence, and its importance in thecivil rights movement.

“I would … say that it is a method whichseeks to secure a moral end throughmoral means,” he said, “and it growsout of the whole concept of love, because if one is truly nonviolent thatperson has a loving spirit, he refusesto inflict injury upon the opponentbecause he loves the opponent.”

King connued, “I am convinced thatwhen the history books are wrienin future years, historians will have torecord this movement as one of thegreatest epics of our heritage,” he said.

“It represents struggle on the highestlevel of dignity and discipline.”

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, one of thefounders of the Southern ChrisanLeadership Conference with King in1957, said the tapes are a reminderof the work King started that is notfinished.

“One of the things that occurred backthen, we eff ecvely communicatedthat nonviolence as a tacc, as atechnique, was very eff ecve for civilrights protests,” said Lowery. “Whatwe failed to do was express it’s not justa tacc, but a way of life.”Lowery went on, “We’re losing the

bale of violence versus nonviolenceas a means of resolving humanconflict,” he said, “I hope Dr. King’smessage, wherever it shows up willhelp us in the struggle.”

In another part of Tull’s recording, Kingdescribes a recent trip to Africa. Heexplains to Tull’s father the importanceof the civil rights movement both inthe United States and abroad.

“There is quite a bit of interest andconcern in Africa for the situaonin the United States. African leadersin general, and African people inparcular are greatly concernedabout the struggle here and familiarwith what has taken place,” he said,“We must solve this problem of racialinjusce if expect to maintain ourleadership in the world, and if weexpect to maintain a moral voice in aworld that is two thirds color.”

The recording is intriguing to ClayborneCarson, a professor of history andfounding director of the Marn LutherKing, Jr., Research and EducaonInstute at Stanford University.

“It’s hard to know what we’re dealingwith,” he said, “There are thousands

of interviews with Dr. King, and it’shard to tell the historical significanceof this (one).”

“What is interesng about this israther than just a transcript, you canhear his voice,” he added.

In 1985, King’s widow, the late CoreaSco King, invited Carson to direct along-term project to edit and publishthe civil rights leader’s works.

NY Mayors Leery of Statewide Fiscal Control BoardALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — An unprecedentedproposal to create a powerfulstatewide control board in New Yorkto steer several cies, counes andschool districts away from bankruptcyis geng a chilly response frommayors.

The mayors of Syracuse, Albany,Rochester and Yonkers said Mondaythat local leaders need to be part of any soluon to the fiscal problemsfacing municipalies. The mayors sayeven a recovery from the recessionwon’t change the basic problemsthey’re confronng: diminishingtax revenues in part from decliningpopulaons, and rising costs includingpublic worker payrolls, benefits andpension costs.

The mayors were reacng Mondayto a New York Post story that saidGov. Andrew Cuomo and ComptrollerThomas DiNapoli were discussing acontrol board.

Cuomo and DiNapoli were discussingseveral opons but were “keenly awarethat one size does not fit all whenit comes to fiscal stress,” DiNapolispokeswoman Jennifer Freeman said.

“We have not had discussions with thegovernor’s office about fiscal stresslegislave proposals,” she said.

Cuomo wouldn’t comment.

Control boards have been used sincethe 1970s to cut spending and makeother difficult decisions in New YorkCity, Buff alo, Troy, Yonkers and NassauCounty. The appointed boards arestrongly opposed by powerful publicworkers unions because the boardshave forced cuts in workforces andtheir benefits among other policallydifficult decisions.

DiNapoli said in a report last week thatcommunies could face “devastang”fiscal condions in coming years assome municipalies in other statesalready have.

The Post said Cuomo had draed aversion of legislaon for a statewidecontrol board with extensive powersto cut costs, even union contracts.

Mayors Stephanie Miner of Syracuse,Mike Spano of Yonkers, ThomasRichards of Rochester and Gerald

Jennings of Albany said they believedecisions about their cies should bemade in concert with local officials.

“We, as mayors, are dealing with ournew realies,” they stated Monday.“We are commied to working withthe governor and comptroller todesign a soluon that will serve theinterest of the state and its municipalgovernments.”

But the concern goes beyond the fourcies.

Last week, DiNapoli reported nearly300 local governments had deficitsin 2010 or 2011 and more than 100didn’t have enough cash to pay theircurrent bills. His analysis of 4,000local governments and school districtsfound many school districts also are onthe brink.

A $400 million decline in localgovernment and school revenuesduring the recession includes a nearly6 percent drop in sales tax collecons,a decline in property values inDutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam,Rockland, Sullivan, Suff olk, Ulster andWestchester counes and a $50 million

loss of state aid to municipalies.

DiNapoli also found Cortland County,Binghamton, Gloversville, Jamestown,Lackawanna, New York City, theVillage of Herkimer and the Village of Lyons are “dangerously close” to theirconstuonal tax limit. He said moregovernments may soon approach theirtaxing limit.

DiNapoli also cited poor budgengand record-keeping at more than adozen local governments and urgedmul-year planning.

But planning alone might not beenough, said Richard Brodsky, aformer assemblyman from Westhesterand now a senior fellow at the WagnerSchool at New York University.

“In cies like Yonkers, Syracuse orRochester, which have done thoseplans, the choice is bankruptcy, bailoutor control board,” Brodsky said. “Theysimply cannot meet their communityservice obligaons — police, fire, educaon, sanitaon, parks — withthe resources they have within thecity. That’s the conversaon New Yorkneeds to have, now.”

Newsweek’s Cover Says President Obama Has FailedNewsweek seemsdesperate togenerate coversthat will sellcopies of theirmagazine. Just afew months ago,the publicaonreceived aenonfor naming BarackObama “The FirstGay President.”Now, it’s simplysaying that

Barack needs to be gone and replacedby Mi Romney.

Newsweek’s latest cover has the words“Hit the Road Barack,” and they aren’t joking. The arcle, wrien by HarvardUniversity historian Niall Ferguson, says that President Obama has failedand that it’s me to take the countryin a diff erent direcon.

Niall Ferguson was instantly aackedby liberals like Nobel Prize-winningeconomist Paul Krugman, parcularlyon Ferguson’s asseron that PresidentObama’s healthcare reform plan willincrease the deficit. Wring for theNew York Times, Krugman simplystated that Ferguson’s words arehighly inaccurate and unreliable. Healso said that the Harvard professormisrepresented the numbers of the

Congressional Budget Office in anunethical way.

Ferguson then shot back at Krugmanand other crics of his arcle:

“The crics are the ones who arespling hairs because it’s absolutelyclear what the CBO has said, is that thecosts of the ACA [Aff ordable Care Act]will not be met by the new sources of revenue,” Ferguson told BloombergTV’s “Market Makers”. “You have todisnguish here between the directsources of revenue created by ACA andthe indirect ways the CBO says it willnot increase the deficit. … Krugman isbeing disingenuous.”

Brad DeLong, an economist with TheUniversity of California at Berkeley, actually called for Ferguson to be firedfor his mistake. But Ferguson is holdingsteady to his crique and is nowdefending his academic reputaon.

“I don’t think you can claim thatthis is in any way undermining myacademic reputaon because thefacts are absolutely clear,” Fergusonsaid on Bloomberg TV. “What we’redealing with here is a very carefullyorchestrated campaign to try anddiscredit the piece by those who areideologically loyal to the president.”

Ferguson argues that those whoare seeking to discredit him arebeing posioned by the ObamaAdministraon to undermine hisanalysis. It is quite possible that this isthe case, since the Obama presidencycan oen be just as oppressive as anyother. Even in the black community, anyone who speaks objecvelyor crically of President Obama isinstantly put into the cross-hairs of paid polical hounds.

At the same me, the subtle argumenthere appears to be that Fergusonhimself is being aff ected by the verysame bias that he believes to havetainted the perspecve of his policalenemies. By simply focusing on thecost of the healthcare plan withoutconsidering indirect economic (andnon-financial) benefits, Ferguson mayalso be using selecve informaon inorder to make his point. Paul Krugmanis no dummy, and one can easily arguethat each man is choosing to see hisversion of polical reality, while bothare smart enough to selecvely choosedata to make their point (that’s whatmany scholars do in their research).

Finally, I find it interesng that no oneconsiders the human element to all of this. Even if the Obama healthcare plandoes increase the deficit, does it notmaer that it allows every American

to have health insurance? The costs of healthcare and educaon have risen tothe point that few American familiescan aff ord to pay either one. Even if thedeficit is negavely impacted by givinghealth coverage to children, I thinkthat such a sacrifice makes our countrybeer, not worse, in the end. Allowingthe wealthy to pay higher taxes so thateveryone benefits comes at minimalcost to the rich, while literally savingthe lives of those at the boom. If you aren’t willing to pay a lile morein taxes to save another person’s life, then your soul has been poisoned withthe very worst of greedy, unfeeredcapitalism.

Perhaps one day, we can stop seeingthe value of human life like a price tagin a Wal-Mart store. In spite of all of our economic troubles, the UnitedStates is sll the richest country in theworld. The reality is that everyonedeserves access to quality healthcareand educaon, and we can aff ord togive it to them. The boom line doesnot always have to have a dollar signaached to it, for there are somethings more valuable than money.

Tashame Ali, A Syracuse Success StoryTashame Ali is ona roll. That bestdescribes whatis happening, considering therecent changesthat haveoccurred in hislife.

He’s a studentat SyracuseUniversity, and

has succeeded in accomplishing whathas eluded many –combining single-parenthood with the pursuit of ahigher educaon.

It is not an easy thing to do.

Two years ago, he was just anotherunder-educated black man. Andhe experienced the problems thatcome with not having the relevanteducaonal credenals.

He didn’t qualify to get the kind of jobhe wanted.

He lacked a high school diplomaand could only get jobs he didn’tparcularly care for. He also foundhimself with full custody of his son.

He worked for several years at anumber of jobs that paid just enoughto provide for his basic needs. Whenhe lost his last job for a pey reason,he decided it was me for self-improvement.

“I know I can do it,” Ali said. “I havealways known that I am an intelligentyoung black man with potenal.”

Also knew precisely what it wouldtake: higher educaon and a collegedegree.

His main goal then was to change thedirecon of his life by going back toschool to get his GED.

Sll, as a single parent, with limitedresources, and no family supportnetwork to rely on for the simplethings such as baby sing, thetransformaon that’s occurring now, required a plan of acon – one Alimapped out a few years back.

Tashame Ali began by enrolling inone of those programs that preparestudents to qualify to go to college.

He targeted Syracuse University and

began a program of study designed todo just that.

And true enough, his self-movaonand hard work is now laying a solidfoundaon for his future. As we analyze what he’s doing, it’snatural to ask: How did he do it?

First it takes determinaon, perseverance and discipline.

Ali made up his mind to do it andwas ready to make the sacrifice. He,and anyone else in a similar posion, has to figure out a way to make surehis own plans didn’t interfere withanything else.

Then he had to deal with the task of preparing to pursue higher educaon.Taking a combinaon of day and nightclasses solved the problem; he didn’tdeprive his son of parental aenonand care.

He also had to realize which careerpath best suited his long-term plan.He had to choose between twoavenues of interest: music, which hasalways been a major interest of his,and youth work.

Ali is a talented rapper. In a compeonthat pied him against the best rappersin the city of Syracuse he won.

But, according to him, winning therap compeon didn’t convince himto pursue a career in music. Instead,he maintained his interest in youthwork by working with a number of organizaons, and chose to study childpsychology at Syracuse University.

“I have done just what I planned to doand now everything is falling in place,”Ali said.

Aer graduaon, he plans on workingwith people facing circumstancessimilar to what he’s overcome. That’s giving back to our community ina way that is much needed.

Doesn’t Truth Maer Anymore?(TriceEdneyWire.com) - I waslistening to Chuck

Todd of MSNBCas he interviewedIowa GovernorTerry Branstadr e g a r d i n gthe droughtcondions inhis state andhow they wouldimpact Iowafarmers. Without

prompng and surprisingly to meand, I suspect, other viewers, theconversaon leapfrogged to a totallyunrelated maer-- the Romney team’saccusaon that President BarackObama had arbitrarily taken away thework requirement from the “Welfareto Work” law.

Without regard to common televisionequee, Governor Branstad talkedover his host, Chuck Todd, as thoughhe did not even hear the correconsthat Mr. Todd aempted to insertin the discussion. Without anyacknowledgment of the misinformaonhe was spewing, Governor Branstad

seemed determined to get his talkingpoints out—true or false.

If he were the only person doing that,I don’t suppose it would maer somuch, but just before that interview Ihad heard Congressman Paul Ryan usethe same talking point, and before thatI had seen the Romney aack ad doingthe same thing—using informaon tomake a point that has been debunkedby reliable sources over and overagain. I asked myself, “Doesn’t truthmaer anymore?”

Shelton Gragg and Stefan Petruchaauthored a book called, “Whatthe____Is Wrong with the Right?”,and I have been asking myself that alot lately. Almost any day, we can seesomeone on the right disrespecngthe Office of the President, hurling

coded insults about everybody whois not white, male, wealthy and onthe far right on every issue. In otherwords, as far as the right is concerned, there is something wrong with AfricanAmericans, women, Progressives, seniors, Democrats (all of which I am),Lanos, LGBT persons, poor people, working people, labor unionists—well

you get the idea.

Not so long ago, the right said

President Barack Obama was too cool!Suddenly, Ryan and Romney decidedthe President is a “hateful, angry Blackman!” They need to get real!!! They’reworking from a script that is designedto drag the President down. They’vehad a measure of success whenyou see a group of unknown Blackpreachers standing at a microphonetalking about blocking the President’sre-elecon or when a few Blacksseeking aenon or blood moneyask, “What has the President done forBlack people?”

Black women are not pleased athearing the “angry”label applied. We like it even less when it’s used todenigrate us. We sure don’t like it when

Ryan, Romney and right-wing typesuse it on our President. God knows wehave much about which to be angry-- lynchings, castraons, forced familyseparaons, mis-educaon of ourchildren, thes of our property underthe cover of law, no payment and/orunderpayment for services rendered, shoong our sons and brothers down

in the streets of cies across America, and the list goes on. Sure, we getangry, because we have done far more

to make our communi

es be

er thanthe right has ever helped us to do.

The Ryan-Romney team stands readyto take back from us hard fought gainswe have earned. They don’t mindusing lies and laws to limit our vongrights. They threaten our health bythreatening to end Medicare and totake away aff ordable health care. They try to impose their will on whatwe women do with our bodies andfrighten immigrant children whowere brought here as babies. Ryanand Romney want to force the mostdraconian, extreme budget upon usand, then, make us believe they are onour side. Truth just doesn’t maer tothis crowd. Please! Give me a break!

Do they think we are stupid, crazy orwhat?

POSITIVE! POWERFUL! CONVINCING!

It’s Race, Stupid(TriceEdneyWire.com) - It was the1992 Bill Clinton-George H.W.Bush presidenalcampaign which

introduced them e m o r a b l epolical slogan:“It’s the economy,Stupid.” Thatslogan was a wayof explainingwhy Bush was indanger of losing

his job.

During the 2012 campaign betweenPresident Barack Obama and formerMassachuses governor, MiRomney,a clarifying explanaon as to why thePresident is in danger of losing his jobis similar: “It’s Race, Stupid.”

Of course, one would never know this

if dependent upon commentatorson radio and television and op-edcolumnists with major newspapers andmagazines. They go on and on abouteverything that threatens PresidentObama’s re-elecon prospects exceptthe fact that many, if not most, Whitesin this country, especially White males, have had more than enough of seeinga Black man in the White House.

For example, hosts of public aff airsprograms on television and radio andnewspaper and magazine columnistshave analyzed and discussed thespeech made by Rep. Paul Ryan aerhe was chosen as Romney’s runningmate without once dealing with themost revealing statement he made.

Aer cing several acons that mustbe taken by those who detest Obamabeing in the White House, Ryan notedthat if those things were done “We willget our country back on November 6.”

In all the vitriolic, parsan aacks madeon presidents Clinton and GeorgeW. Bush by their opponents, I don’trecall a single aacker insisng thatthe president must be defeated forre-elecon so “we can get our countryback.” That has been the mantraonly about President Barack Obama.Rep. Ryan and those who share hissenment believe the following: Thatthe United States must be rescuedand that President Obama - with hisMuslim father from Kenya, African-American wife, Asian-American sisterand other Kenyan blood relaves - isan outsider who can’t possibly be asAmerican as they are.

They insist this is so despite the

fact that the President’s policieshelped save thousands of jobs in theautomobile industry, have maintainedthe Bush tax cuts focusing on helpingthose who have money get moremoney, have provided health caresupport for working class and middleincome mostly White families that areone catastrophic illness away fromfinancial disaster, have provided asmulus package which gave moneyeven to the congressional districts of hypocrical an-smulus policianssuch as Rep. Ryan, and have createdan economic climate in whichcorporaons have made record-sengprofits.

His policies also resulted in the

killing of U.S. public enemy numberone, Osama bin Laden, have nearlycrippled al-Qaeda with constant droneaacks that also killed dozens of non-combatants, have connued the neo-cons’ war of choice in Afghanistan and

have significantly expanded economicsancons against Iran, among otherthings.

Most notably, President Obama hasdeterminedly avoided any kind of gesture or policy that could honestlybe described as reaching out toAfrican-Americans. And he has kept hiscool, even when Glenn Beck mockedhis daughter and when personallyinsulted by code names such as FoodStamp President to avoid being labeledan angry Black male.

Though one may oppose these policies

or regard them as insufficient for whatis needed, they don’t remotely reflecta person from whom the countrymust be rescued. So what is le butthe conclusion that for Rep. Ryan andhis cohorts, a Black man in the White

House, any Black man, includingbrothers from another mother suchas Herman Cain, Rep. Alan Westof Florida, Rep. Tom Sco of SouthCarolina, Artur Davis and others of that ilk, is unbearable, a severe shockto the White psyche. In other words,“It’s Race, Stupid.”
