What does creativity mean to you? Rodica (R): Creativity is about reinventing yourself, creating something new; something that hasn’t been done before. I do think it comes from our childhood. All children have ‘creativity’ in them; but some ‘mature’ too fast— and somehow, down the road, forget how to have fun. {Smiles} Have fun, being happy and creativity are inter-related. That having said, as a hairdresser, it’s imperative to constantly remain happy and know how to have fun—in order to feel inspired, allowing us to get creative with our work. Hardy (H): It has to be one-of-a-kind. The level of originality that spans from your creation has to be distinctive. The theme for the Color Zoom challenge incorporates just that, taking the assessment for each masterpiece to a much higher standard; which ultimately, makes it even harder to compete, for the contestants. Not easy. {Smiles} Where do you get your inspiration? R: From everywhere—from beautiful things, happy people; from literally waking up in the morning feeling happy. When I am not happy, I am not that ‘creative’. {Laughs} H: The theme for the Color Zoom challenge in 2014 was “Reallusion”. As you observe from my creation*, I have combined the elements from mathematics with art. The theme speaks a lot about creating ‘something that may not look normal/real, yet still look normal/real’ – displaying a kaleidoscope effect to illuminate your masterpiece. (*After an exciting live final, Hardy snagged the Gold Prize in the Creative Category, Color Zoom Challenge 2014.) Any observations you could make from the educational seminars/workshops conducted at home-ground versus other countries? R: It is common to say translation appears to be quite a challenge. I won’t understand what’s being translated, and things may get ‘lost in translation’. You bound to wonder, “did they manage to translate my emotions correctly?– because passion/emotion is difficult to ‘translate’ or convey. It’s only when you get to that ‘point’ that you know for sure the audience truly ‘gets it’. Nonetheless, I do trust my translator, because everything turns out alright. It shows during the session. {Smiles} H: What impressed me most is the passion shown by Malaysian hairdressers. Everyone was very inquisitive, particularly about this year’s theme, D!srupt. Despite the language barrier, the seminar was a fruitful one: the rapport between Rodica and myself, complemented by the active interaction from the audience. Everyone wasn’t shy about asking questions. Hardy, how was it like to create the D!srupt Collection together with a Master team? And Rodica, how did you find the collaboration with the younger stylists? H: The first time I met Rodica (last year), I couldn’t utter a word. As you know, English isn’t my forte; and I was really nervous! Today, (well, despite my English isn’t very much polished yet), we could talk to one and another for hours! {Giggles} I really enjoy the rapport and chemistry we both share. All I need to do is to show my passion – and Rodica gets me. We can really ‘communicate’. In those days, young stylists like myself could only look up to these hair gurus performing on the stage – full with admiration. Today, having the opportunity to be able to have a chat to exchanging thoughts with hair masters like Rodica – it is indeed an added bonus I have been blessed with, through Color Zoom. R: I have been involved with the show for more than 10 years; though, this is my maiden involvement with the global collection. For me, it’s more of absorbing and understanding what their direction is. After all, this is their dream – my role here is to ‘guide’ and to support them in materialising that dream. Everyone is hardworking, and humble – which plays a vital part in garnering your own success; not forgetting where your root is. It’s about giving your all and presenting the best of you out there! Why should a hairdresser join the Color Zoom Challenge? R: Every hairdresser pictures himself with the trophy. But before you get there – you need to enjoy the journey. Not winning an award does not mean your work is bad; vice versa. This Competition will prepare you for greater opportunities and dreams. Never lose hope; enjoy the ride. Failing doesn’t mean losing – taking part itself is winning already, because you believe in yourself! Your time will come; so now, give the best you can! H: When I won the 2014 Color Zoom Challenge (in the Creative Category), I was about 24 – considerably younger than the usual age cap among the participants that year. The victory did come with a certain amount of stress – good stress. People don’t view you as just a twenty- year-old lad, nor would I be able to use the ‘age card’ as an excuse to slack off with my work. This truly allows me to grow more, and faster – when it comes to level of maturity and mentality. It pushes me to set higher standards for myself, and achieve my goals. Taking part in Color Zoom has indeed changed me. Hardy(H): 它必需是独一无二的。 Get ready to D!SRUPT with 一起瓦解!重生 Rodica Hristu Hardy Tsai & Rodica Hristu Hardy Tsai & RODICA HRISTU NORTH AMERICAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR (CANADA) GLOBAL MASTER 南美创意总监 (加拿大) 国际大师 HARDY TSAI GLOBAL WINNER – CREATIVE CATEGORY (TAIWAN) COLOR ZOOM 2014 全球冠—创意组别 (台湾) 2014年COLOR ZOOM 全球跃型耀色大赏 #DARETODisRupT RODICA HRISTU Actively involved in many Goldwell launches, with a solid presence in most of Global Color Zoom shows and Color Zoom Master 2015 Las Vegas—Rodica believes that being an exceptional colorist is not only about colouring hair or about creativity and experience, all throughout her 27 years within the industry. “It’s a combination of all elements and it is based on Knowledge, Visualization and Emotion.” HARDY TSAI With 13 years of experience under his belt, Hardy has been a long- term collaborator with Goldwell. What does creativity mean to you?

Rodica (R): Creativity is about reinventing

yourself, creating something new; something

‘creativity’ in them; but some ‘mature’ too fast—

creativity are inter-related. That having said, as a

hairdresser, it’s imperative to constantly remain

happy and know how to have fun—in order to

feel inspired, allowing us to get creative with our

work.

Hardy (H): It has to be one-of-a-kind. The level

of originality that spans from your creation has

to be distinctive. The theme for the Color Zoom

challenge incorporates just that, taking the

assessment for each masterpiece to a much

higher standard; which ultimately, makes it even

harder to compete, for the contestants. Not

easy. {Smiles}

Where do you get your inspiration?

R: From everywhere—from beautiful things,

happy people; from literally waking up in the

morning feeling happy. When I am not happy, I

am not that ‘creative’. {Laughs}

H: The theme for the Color Zoom challenge in

2014 was “Reallusion”. As you observe from

look normal/real, yet still look normal/real’ –

displaying a kaleidoscope effect to illuminate

your masterpiece. (*After an exciting live fi nal,

Any observations you could make from the

educational seminars/workshops conducted

at home-ground versus other countries?

R: It is common to say translation appears to

be quite a challenge. I won’t understand what’s

being translated, and things may get ‘lost in

translation’. You bound to wonder, “did they

manage to translate my emotions correctly?”

– because passion/emotion is diffi cult to

‘translate’ or convey. It’s only when you get to

that ‘point’ that you know for sure the audience

truly ‘gets it’. Nonetheless, I do trust my

translator, because everything turns out alright.

It shows during the session. {Smiles}

H: What impressed me most is the passion

shown by Malaysian hairdressers. Everyone was

very inquisitive, particularly about this year’s

theme, D!srupt. Despite the language barrier, the

seminar was a fruitful one: the rapport between

Rodica and myself, complemented by the active

involvement with the global collection. For me,

it’s more of absorbing and understanding what

their direction is. After all, this is their dream

them in materialising that dream. Everyone

is hardworking, and humble – which plays a

vital part in garnering your own success; not

forgetting where your root is. It’s about giving

your all and presenting the best of you out there!

Why should a hairdresser join the Color

Zoom Challenge?

R: Every hairdresser pictures himself with the

trophy. But before you get there – you need

to enjoy the journey. Not winning an award

does not mean your work is bad; vice versa.

This Competition will prepare you for greater

opportunities and dreams. Never lose hope;

enjoy the ride. Failing doesn’t mean losing –

taking part itself is winning already, because you

believe in yourself! Your time will come; so now,

give the best you can!

H: When I won the 2014 Color Zoom Challenge

considerably younger than the usual age cap

among the participants that year. The victory

did come with a certain amount of stress – good
