PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: History of the Carleton House (Part 2)

Last week, I introduced you to John and his son, Chester Carleton, owners of the large antebellum house on the bluff of the St. Sebastian River where today only the foundation exists. John B. Carleton was born about 1860 and no history exists prior to his son’s birth in 1915. Was he hiding something? He made a name for himself when he arrived in 1924 Roseland. There is indication he made money in Connecticut and moved to Florida. In local historical records, it was written he ran a “confidence game” and was sent to prison. By August 1928, he disappeared, and returned in May 1930. He was selling property. From August 1934 to March 1935, he disappeared again. It is assumed he died. His wife is a widow on the 1935 land records. Chester inherited the property after his mother died in 1942. He kept it many years, but he lived in Roseland. He is remembered as being eccentric and wearing two hats.

Mary E. Platt purchased three of Chester’s lots just before he left for Brazil in 1961. According to a 1967 letter from Mary to Chester’s sister Ruth, “As I knew him he wore his hair long, didn’t shave and went barefoot.” Chester died April 1965 from lack of nutrition. Apparently he only ate vitamin pills, but he left a large estate.

A great deal has been written about the house on the bluff. All articles said Chester tore it down and used the wood to build his Roseland houses. According to Mary in 1967, “The ‘big’ house changed ownership three times and was divided into small apartments with used tubs.” Our memories can be unreliable. The house was most likely torn down in the 1970s. Further research is needed.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for “Dancing With The Stars” to fade from the scene:

• A yard sign supporting Donald Trump wasn’t enough. Vero Beach attorney Stephen Fromang wanted to make a statement. If you drive past his office at 1620 26th Street, you’ll see not only a yard sign but also a large piece of wood with the words “Viva Trump!” on it. (Fromang says a disabled Iraqi War veteran painted the sign with a brush.) The sign is positioned so those in a car heading east, toward U.S. 1, will see it. “That is sort of like a dedicated corner to patriotism,” Fromang said. “That’s the way I see it.” What inspired Fromang to take such a strong political stand? He likened Trump to the gentleman standing up and speaking to a crowd on Norman Rockwell’s iconic covers of Life magazine.

“Trump is doing that,” he said. Fromang says he’s tired of America being a “nanny state.” “We have bureaucrats who are treating us like cattle and sheep,” he said. “We don’t need to go down the Socialist toilet.” Fromang said he’d be OK with Ted Cruz as the GOP nominee, too. He described Trump and Cruz as “freedom-fighters.” So, what about Trump’s repeated “unpresidential” behavior? “I haven’t seen it,” Fromang said. Huh? It’s pretty hard to miss if you’ve been paying attention to the GOP race. Trump consistently belittles his opponents. Fromang gave Trump a pass, saying that’s the type of behavior you need to exhibit if you’re going to be successful in business in New York City. So, he’s OK with what he calls

Trump’s “punch-you-in-the-nose” attitude.• As mentioned last week, 10 guys from around the United States and Canada are coming to Sebastian in a few weeks for the draft in our “fantasy” football league. More than a dozen readers sent suggestions for extra-curricular activities. Thanks to everyone who sent me suggestions. I’ll be sure to send an email to the draft attendees to let them know what the area has to offer.• If Wesley Davis loses to David Nolte in what promises to be a hotly contested Property Appraiser’s race, he might look back and wonder if his “Citizen Davis” speech before the County Commission cost him some votes. • In last week’s Top 500 countdown, I called “867-5309” the most famous phone number in America. Not so fast, said Paul Hargraves. “Well, this may be dependent on age demographics,” he said. “For the AARP set, I’m guessing the most famous number would be ‘Beechwood 4-5789’ by the Marvelettes.”

Fair enough. “Be warned: I follow this list very closely,” Paul said.• It wasn’t an official out-of-state license plate count, but I did see tags from all 48 states in the continental United States during the first three weeks of March. The last two I needed were Washington and Oregon – and I saw them last week in different Publix parking lots.• Gayle Gatton was one of the people who sent me suggestions for the aforementioned “fantasy” football visitors. She said she made a list for a recent visit by relatives. She may have set a record for most exclamation points in an email. “Went to Peterson Groves for the ambiance (a hit). Went to Schacht’s Grove for the best juice. While chatting with Janet at Schacht’s, a great story there, she told us about Capt. Bob’s Airboat Adventures. So we put that on the list. Best thing of all!!! Capt. Scott did our tour! The greatest! History! Humor! Genuine, nice Indian River County guy! You really need to take your group on the tour!”

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Brian Cunningham played the drums for the first time at age 9, and he was 10 when he took his first boat ride. Well, look at him now – at age 58. “I still do both,’’ he said, “full-time.” Yes, as a co-owner of Vero Marine Center and the drummer in multiple bands, he is not one to sit around and twiddle his thumbs. One of the first things you notice about Brian is his hair. He still has lots of it (unlike the 57-year-old guy who was interviewing him at C.J. Cannon’s). Back in the day, his hair was much longer – you might say he looked like a drummer in a rock band.

Brian’s primary band now is Dave Scott and the Reckless Shots. He also plays with Greg Jackson and the Mojo Band. If that’s not enough, he fills in when other bands need a drummer. Sometimes that entails driving to Orlando to play with a band and returning home at 2 or 3 a.m., then being at Vero Marine when the doors open at 8:30. From 2010 to 2013, Brian played drums more

than 200 nights a year. “I’ve really tried to scale back the last couple of years,” he said. “I now play about 100 nights a year.” In case you’re wondering, his favorite drummer is Steve Gadd. His early influences were Phil Collins and Carl Palmer. Brian and his wife, Karen, have three daughters and three grandchildren. “Everyone is very artistic and we’re all boaters,” he said. “We are a family of water rats.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Indian River County often receives more than $50,000 annually from fines for violations of local ordinances. Two years ago, the county received $69,393 in fines. Three years ago, the total was $51,876. For the current fiscal year, the county has $39,000 in its budget (expected General Fund revenue) for fines.
