THE VIEW FROM LONG LEG

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

Welcome players, officials, sponsors and spectators to the 200 CAPE MANILA 0’S and, of course, to the tournament’s legendary home, Nomad Sports Club. This is my fourth year as Chairman and it is, as ever, an honour to hold such a prestigious position.

I normally open by welcoming 32 teams to the tournament – I even went as far last year to welcome M10’s virgins “Dubai Multiplex”. Those were words I ate fairly quickly on Saturday

morning when said visitors failed to show! Had they been stuck in some form of hostelry, I may have seen the amusing side of it… the fact that they failed to leave Dubai Airport and clearly have no access to email or cell phones may suggest a slightly different reaction! Ho, hum. Anyway, I warmly welcome how ever many sides show up this year and just hope it is the same as the number who registered ☺Last year brought some special moments and will be difficult to eclipse – but I said that about the year before as well! Outstanding memories for me were Nomads taking on the strongest of the sides in the Cup competition, and acquitting themselves well although not exactly victorious; the Tokyo Gaijin “Haka” and, of course, that sensational winning try at the death by special guest, Jeremy Paul. There is something for everyone in this tournament and I am sure you will all have your moments to savour over the coming weekend.

Much has happened at Nomads for those of you who are only able to visit once a year. The grass should be greener and the ground softer than you may remember – this development has been partially financed by the Manila 0’s (we firmly believe in re-investing in our Club) and given the unequivocal support of the Board of Directors along with Bob Horan at Sport Turf Solutions. You may also notice a spanking new entrance and car park where there was once a mini jungle – this has been a major Club project and one that I am sure you will agree makes Nomads that much more accessible.

I must take this opportunity to say “thank you” to the people that make this tournament happen:

• To our sponsors and, in particular, to Mike Harding at Cape who are now entering their fifth year as title sponsors – your support is very much valued and appreciated;

• To the staff of Nomad Sports Club, ably led by Alma Ackary – these guys really put their backs into the M0’s weekend and it is an absolute pleasure to work with them;

• The Board of Directors of Nomad Sports Club, for the third year under the Presidency of Jonathan Thorp; and

• Last but not least, the Manila 0’s Organising Committee, to whom a page is rightfully dedicated in this programme.

There are many more people that need to be thanked, but I only get one page! So, thanks to everyone who has contributed in some way, shape or form to the M0’s – I am indeed very grateful.

This year’s tournament is tinged with some sadness, following the recent, untimely loss of both Tony Butler and “Borneo” Nick Villeperieux. As many of you know, Tony was a fantastic supporter of this great game and his efforts with the PRFU will be sadly missed. Nick has been described as a “rugby icon” in Asia – it will not be the same without those orange dreadlocks lighting up Nomads. This programme includes tributes to both Tony and Nick; please read them and give a thought to our departed friends - they will surely be with us in spirit.

Tony and Nick would have joined me in saying that this is simply the best weekend in Manila in the year – you cannot fail but to enjoy it! I encourage you to do so and look forward to meeting many different people over the weekend.

Yours in Sport

MESSAGE FROM NSC

On behalf of the members of NOMAD SPORTS CLUB, the Board of Directors would like to welcome all the players and spectators to the 200 Manila 0’s. This is the Manila 0’s 21st anniversary and the 40th year that Nomads has been located here in Merville Park.

These are exciting days for Nomads as this year we embark on finalizing the purchase of the land so this event, along with other sporting events, can continue for many years to come. The Manila 0’s is one the highlights of the social calendar in the Philippines and is organized by a group of volunteers who devote their time and enormous effort to guarantee that the event is truly the best social rugby tournament in the world.

The Nomads Board would like to thank Bill Bailey, the chairman of the Manila 0’s, and his committee for once again organizing this weekend’s social activities, which we have no doubt will be appreciated by everyone. The employees of Nomads also make a tremendous effort, starting several weeks in advance, to prepare the club for the Manila 0’s, including the field, clubhouse and the facilities for the enjoyment of all our members and guests. While you are in the Philippines please try and visit some of the wonderful destinations we have to offer so you too can see the true beauty of this wonderful country. Salamat po Mabuhay!

Mabuhay and Welcome to the Philippines!

On behalf of the PRFU Board of Directors, it is an honor to welcome all the International and Philippine based Rugby Union Teams who are participating in the 2010 Manila 10’s Rugby Union Tournament. This year we will see 32 teams compete for the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield trophies, with 23 teams travelling from various overseas destinations including Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and France and nine local Filipino teams starting with the tournament hosts (Nomads) and other clubs travelling from Alabang (Eagles), Cebu (Dragons) and Bataan (MAAP Warriors).

Everyone involved in Rugby Union loves to attend the Manila 10’s and the weekend provides local Rugby Union players the opportunity to compete against international opponents in a competitive situation. The Philippine Rugby Football Union were granted full IRB membership in 2009 and the Manila 10’s tournament is the largest Rugby tournament played here in the Philippines and proceeds from this great event are used to help support the growth and development of Rugby Union throughout the country.

MESSAGE FROM PRFU

The organizers and competing teams must be applauded for the continued growth of the Manila 10’s tournament and with each successive year the PRFU has also grown and followed in the standards set at the Manila 10’s tournament by providing Rugby Union as sport that can be played and enjoyed throughout the Philippines. This year the PRFU will select a National Development team that will consist of locally grown talent, players will be selected from the local clubs including the new development programs at both the Philippine National Police Academy and the Philippine Army.

The Manila 10’s weekend is also one of the highlights in the Manila social calendar and a number of corporate companies take advantage of the opportunity to wine, dine and relax in the terrific social atmosphere that is the Manila 10’s. Without this corporate support the tournament would not be renowned as the “Best Social Rugby Tournament in Asia”I will be supporting all the Philippine based teams throughout the tournament and will certainly be cheering for the full Filipino sides at this year’s Manila 10’s.

I would like to congratulate the Nomad Sports Club for hosting such a successful and enjoyable Rugby 10’s tournament and for the continued support of the Philippine Rugby Football Union.

I look forward to watching the 2010 Manila 10’s tournament and hope that all the participants thoroughly enjoy their time here in the Philippines.

Yours Sincerely,

Alvin San DiegoSecretary GeneralPHILIPPINE RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

NOMADS CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Welcome,This is the weekend Manila’s been waiting for. For your NOMADS RUGBY CLUB - this is BIG. Personally, I’ve been waiting a good 363 days for this most special of events. Bringing in 32 teams from as far as France, UK, Australia, New Zealand and across Asia should tell you how much value the rugby community places on our tournament. Or is it how much value the drinking community places on our city?

Well, if you’re new to Manila 10’s then you’re in for an untold weekend! Two days of sunburn, hydration, knee-supports, massages, sweat, stretcher-bearers, exaggerations, grazed skin and much much more. From the Gatorade glugging guys of the Cup, down to the smokes and San Migs at half time of the Shield, it all adds to the wonder of the M10’s. Obviously, it’s not just the rugby you’ve travelled to Manila for! There’s also our extraordinary architecture, unique cuisine, the museums of Intramuros and horse rides round the city that all make the trip worthwhile.

Already this year MANILA NOMADS RUGBY CLUB was just about able to seal the PRFU 10’s Series against a powerful and much younger and fitter Alabang Eagles team. In January we took a trip 600km south of Manila to the city of Cebu where we overcame a

tough Dragons team to win by 6 points. With both these teams being almost totally made up of Filipino players, along with our national team conquering the Asian 5 Nations Division 3 title, we are experiencing a dramatic rise in the popularity and quality of domestic rugby. Long may it continue.

Of late, Manila Nomads have seen a welcome injection of youth adding to the old guard of our core team. Overall though it’s our combination of cultures and rugby pedigree that makes the team what it is. The mix of French grit, American spirit, English dominance, New Zealand hustle, Welsh effort, Aussie mongrel, African smash and Filipino flair is there for all to see. For those of you lucky enough to come up against us – be warned!

Wish you all a memorable weekend.

THE NOMADS BULLETTES IN BANGKOK FOR THE 6th ASIAN CLUB TOUCH CHAMPIONSHPS

The NOMADS BULLETTES LADIES TEAM carried the Philippine Flag at the 6th Asian Club Touch Championships, our first-ever effort at a Federation of International Touch (F.I.T.) sanctioned tournament, which was held in Bangkok, last 20-21 June 2009.

The Championships attracts club teams from all over Asia and International club touring teams that contest their own ‘International Challenge’ Series. This was the perfect opportunity for the BULLETTES and the development of Philippine Touch Rugby to move up to the next level in this field.

Organized by the Asian Touch Football Federation, it is dedicated to the promotion and development of the sport of Touch (Rugby/Football) in the Asian region, which is aligned closely with the Federation of International Touch (FIT).

Fifty teams from 10 different countries led by New Zealand, Australia and United Kingdom will vied for top honors in the men, women’s mixed and masters categories, respectively.

After a runner-up finish on their maiden stint in the Chris Kays Memorial Rugby Tournament last 2007 in Pattaya, Thailand, the THE NOMADS BULLETTES ladies are confident to put up a fighting performance in Bangkok.

“Touch [rugby] has as a very good chance of becoming popular in the country because of our Asian physique—we’re not tall and heavy,” said Arabelle Jimenez, also part of the NOMADS BULLETTES. “But we’re very fast and well coordinated.”

Touch Rugby, a fast-rising field sport with minimal contact, has gained popularity the last five years in the Philippines with the sport promoting the fundamental skills of running, handling, evasion and support play. Touch rugby also develops the basic principles of attack and defense without the fear of getting hurt.

Headed by Coach Rey Gigataras, THE NOMADS BULLETTES, who have reaped awards in various tournaments in the Philippines, head the field competing in the event with the support of Gatorade and Mizuno.

After a gruelling 2-day tournament under the heat of Thailand, the Singapore team has emerged as the champions, which are mostly composed of the Singapore National Team. As BULLETTES President Clair Barberis said, “On the overall, the learnings over the tournament weekend weighs just as much as winning the gold. We signed up for the tourney wanting to improve, not knowing what to expect, played as best we could and walked away with a valuable reality check.” And this, we all know - Touch in the Philippines may have a long way to go, but our penetration in the Asian field has shown what Pinays are made of.

Having arrived at the premiere social rugby tournament in Asia and partaken of the delights of San Miguel and the charms of the ladies, it’s time to go on the pitch and run out the alcohol and lack of sleep. Forgotten are the training drills and the coach’s advice, the adrenaline and the aggression take over and the laws are something that remain vaguely in the swill of alcohol and pies. So who will try to control this chaos? The referee.

Having played the game till his aged body cried no more, the prospective referee decides to attempt to memorize a 200 page law book that most lawyers would find confusing and most players have never seen. The book is unintelligible precisely in order to give the referee the sole right to judge which lawbreaker among the chorus of lawbreakers did it first or did it worst. And the mob (or at least the loudmouths) will attempt to inform him of every unseen forward pass, offside and high tackle. The players will generally mumble their comments in fear of the dreaded yellow card.

And who are the referees for the Manila 10’s? Well you won’t see Jonathan Kaplan or Paddy O’Brien, but rather a bunch of Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, French, Chinese and Americans, ranging in age and experience, who love the game and refuse to let age and injuries keep them off the pitch. They huff and puff to maintain a semblance of order in the beastly game played by gentlemen.

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

FROM THE BAR: MORAL TURPITUDE

As one of the acknowledged leaders of Nomads “moral majority” I thought I might make the subject of this year’s “view from the bar” the obvious declining standards in acceptable social behavior as evidenced in sporting men and women. Not club members of course but those over paid overhyped darlings of this the new media age. (Disclaimer) Nomad’s club members are acknowledged as being legal decent and truthful in every way.

According to forecast made under ancient Tao practice, the year of the Tiger (2010) is usually associated with big changes and social disorder; 2010 is likely to be a turbulent year—on both a global and personal levels. Tiger? Turbulence? Social disorder? Can anyone guess to whom my oblique reference is made?

The media has been full of stories of favoured sons and daughters of sport misbehaving in a manner which for centuries would have been rather widely considered “their own business”. Mr. Woods has of course not had a happy time of it recently. I always thought that if his wife were to attack a caddy it would be the rather brusque Steve Jones and not his Escalade. There should of course be a law banning successful male athletes under the age of 35 from marrying at all but not withstanding that lack in jurisprudence do we really need to know all the gory details of Tiger’s sex addition?

The shenanigans of certain footballers have been extensively covered in the English press but my favorite piece of commentary this year goes to the Premier League TV pundit who loudly exclaimed as John Terry nodded a goal past Howard in the Everton net “and would you believe it Terry scores away from home … again!!” They miss nothing in this age of 24/7 media and with that in mind do you really believe that the following was an unintentional faux pas on the part of the newspaper’s editorial staff? Reporting on a local football match:

“Simon Butlers goal line handball gifted Kings Arms Wheatley a place in the Sam Waters Cup semi final as they romped to a 4 -1 win over Kidmoor” The headline: BUTLER HAND JOB GIVES WHEATLEY SEMI

Have you also noticed the decline in quotable quotes once the superstar has actually been caught at it? Their apologies are stilted, their excuses are flimsy and it makes me yearn for the golden age of philandering and booze. The miraculous George Best, who was hardly a shining example of virtuosity, rarely if ever apologized for anything. On being questioned about his lifestyle; “I spent 90% of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted” a famous quote oft repeated. Would the Yank media have torn Tiger to pieces if he had come up with something witty and self deprecating instead of crying and whinging? While researching George’s quotes I happened upon another that made me think he might have visited Nomads at some stage in the past “He can’t kick with his left foot, he can’t tackle, he can’t head the ball and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that, he’s all right.” But there I digress.

Let’s give some thought to how a Tiger Woods apology properly scripted could have worked:

“… I wish to make some sort of explanation to all you sad bastards that have nothing better to do than gloat over me and I do this because it’s imperative with my impending multimillion dollar divorce that you continue to buy everything I endorse”

…..now that would have been worthy of little respect!!

We at Nomads are very far removed from the world of Tiger, Ashley and John and others. Our shenanigans are in the main confined to a noisy CRAFT lunch, a few beers at the Nomads bar or others of a Makati’s favorite sporting nature. Our Directors have remained at Liberty, our Club’s future appears safe, it’s the 10’s once again and so with all due respect to you flawed sporting icons, just enjoy your ridiculous salaries, revel in your ludicrous prize money, thrive on your stupendous endorsements and just let the rest of us live in peace.

PRFU 2009 - A YEAR OF SUCCESS

As we move into the 2010 calendar year, the PRFU looks back on 2009 as a year of successes. The PRFU has come a long way over the last decade and a majority of the hard work by all members of the Philippine Rugby community culminated in some remarkable returns in 2009.

FULL IRB MEMBERSHIPThe year began with the announcement that the PRFU had been accepted as full IRB members and this in itself was a huge feat, considering that only in 2003 the PRFU were still associate members of ARFU. The full IRB membership accreditation not only places the PRFU alongside the countries such as NZ, Australia, South Africa, England, France and Japan, but also provides a new platform of goals and objectives that must be implemented to retain this prestigious status. Over the last decade, the PRFU have climbed a great mountain to achieve this membership and the current PRFU board have already signaled that they are prepared to accept new challenges and work even harder to make Rugby Union a sport for all Filipinos to play and enjoy.

ASIAN NATIONS DIVISION 3 CHAMPIONS The next major achievement of 2009 was the emphatic win by the Philippine Men’s 15s team on home soil in the Asian Nations Division 3 tournament which was played at Nomad Sports Club. The Philippine team who were led by Michael Letts had 21 Filipino heritage players with only 3 expats being chosen in the team. This is extremely important in developing the sport in the Philippines because it provides Filipino role models to all junior players who may one day represent the Philippines in Rugby Union.

The national Men’s 15s team were dominant in both their A5N games, beating a powerful Iran team by 15-3 and then meeting their arch rivals, Guam, in the A5N Final. This game was played for 2 trophies:

1. A5N Division 3 Champion team, who wins the right to move to Division 2 in 2010

2. The annual Magellan Cup which has been played for between the Philippines and Guam since 2008.

In this game, the Philippines proved their class and dominance in all areas of the game and came out winners by 23-3. Rafael Zappia was named both Man of the Match and Player of the Series and his mother, who flew up from Australia to see both her sons play for her country, could not have had a prouder moment with both sons scoring tries and kicking penalties in the final.

GREAT STRIDES FOR THE NATIONAL MEN’S S TEAMThe Philippines then started preparations for the ARFU 7s Championships and entered the national 7s team in both the Brunei and Borneo 7s. The 7s team was led by Oliver Saunders and they claimed the runners up trophy at the Brunei 7 s losing to Malaysia who had a number of Fijian imports playing in their team. This performance set up a good platform for the Asian Championships in Borneo where the Philippines entered the tournament ranked 10th in Asia. The Philippine team were able to beat both Thailand and Chinese Taipei who were ranked 6th and 4th on their way to the plate final which they lost to China. These credible wins helped to move the Philippines from 10th to 6th place in the Asian Championship rankings. The Philippine National 7s team now have to focus on winning a medal at the 2010 Asia Games and qualifying for the 2011 Hong Kong 7s. With some quality players coming back into the squad from injury, these goals are very attainable.

REPORTS

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

ASIAN UNDER 20 DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONSThe final National Team victory for the Philippines saw the young gun U20s team totally dominate the ARFU u20 Div 2 Championships. The first rounds of the tournament were held at the International School of Manila, where the Philippine beat Laos 61 to 0 and Iran by 21 to 3. The finals were played at Nomads where the Philippines beat Pakistan by 46 to 3. With these victories the Philippine National u20s team proved that the future of the Philippines Rugby Union is looking rock solid. This dynamic team scored a total of 128 points for and only had 6 points scored against them, with these points coming in the form of 2 penalty goals. This Philippine team proved that defense does win championships and they will go down in history as the most successful Philippine under age team to date.

IRB GENERAL ASSEMBLYTo cap off a wonderful year of success, the PRFU were not only invited to attend the 9th IRB General Assembly in Dublin, Ireland, but were the only country out of 150 nations to be invited to make a presentation to all the IRB members. Matt Cullen was able to place the Philippines on the Rugby world map and he presented “How to become a Full IRB Member: Road to Success” (this presentation can be viewed on www.prfu.com). It was a wonderful experience and a number of top level tier one countries applauded the PRFU for the successful way they have promoted and developed Rugby Union in this country.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2002010 beckons as a year of new goals and objectives with the Philippine National 15s, 7s and U 20s teams all moving up in the Asian Qualifying Divisions. All three Philippine National teams will have to train and perform at higher levels of success than even before and the challenge to win at these higher levels will provide the extra incentive that all the Philippine national Players need to succeed.

In 2010 the PRFU have also embarked on implementing a new level of Professionalism at all levels of Rugby Union here in the Philippines and this starts will the top 30 Philippine National team members traveling to

Sydney to attend an Elite training Camp at the home of the Waratahs, the Sydney Football Stadium. The PRFU will leave no stone unturned this year to ensure that the Philippines are competing in the A5N Div 1, Hong Kong 7s and U20 Div 1 tournaments in 2011.

Lastly the PRFU have decided to focus on four main areas of development here in the Philippines in 2010:

1. Philippine National Development Team2. Juniors Rugby Union3. Philippine Military Forces4. Ladies 7s National Team

To all the sponsors, supporters, players, administrators and officials, the PRFU would like to send sincere thanks. Without your support, the huge successes of 2009 could never have been achieved.

Have a great weekend at the Manila 10’s tournament and remember to support the PRFU in the Manila 10’s lunch auction.

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

On behalf of the Board and Members of The Philippine Rugby Football Union, our sincere condolences to the family and friends of our dearly departed friend, board member and juniors sponsor, MR. TONY BUTLER.Tony was 52 when he tragically passed away. He was extremely active in all PRFU activities - - this came from his intense passion and support for Rugby Union, a sport that he played throughout his career that started in Ireland and continued to the UK, USA and South America. Tony was particularly passionate about developing Juniors Rugby and supported the PRFU juniors program by inviting his own company, ACTIVEFUN, to become the first major sponsor of the PRFU Juniors league.

Throughout 2009, the PRFU were able to run monthly touch football junior programs and this certainly would not have been possible without the help and support of one man and his company.

IN MEMORY OF TONY BUTLER (1957 - 2009)

ACTIVEFUN agreed to supply each junior player with a T-shirt, cap and also free food and drinks at every monthly tournament. The league had up to 180 junior players participate on a monthly basis and what a lot of supporters do not know, was that Tony himself would go to the supermarket and buy all the food and drinks that were given out to the children at each of these monthly tournaments.

The PRFU had already made plans to introduce the ACTIVEFUN Junior Tackle Competition in the U/12 and U/14 categories in 2010.

This junior tackle tournament will be known as the “Tony Butler Memorial Cup”.The PRFU and all the ACTIVEFUN Juniors Players will certainly miss Tony’s presence at the tournaments. We are committed to honor his legacy by continuing to develop junionrs rugby in the Philippines.

In 2008, Tony Butler and ACTIVEFUN approached the PRFU to become the main Junior Development Sponsor and this was the starting point of the ACTIVEFUN Junior Touch Football League. In the two months that followed, schools, clubs and foundations entered teams on a monthly basis in age categories U/8, U/10, U/12 and U/14.

It was particularly exciting to see new schools following the British School’s lead and by the end of the season the following teams had played in the junior league:

BSM, ISM, Brent, Tuloy, Bahay Bata, Euro Campus and the Manila Hapons.

As everyone knows, the future success of any Rugby Union program begins with junior development and ACTIVEFUN and Tony Butler provided an avenue for such a program here in the Philippines.

TWELVE SENATORS

I have no interest in politics.Never have, never will. Undoubtedly a lack of ambition on my part but quite possibly, born out of a hopelessness towards government, probably instilled in my youth growing up in Shoeburyness, Essex’s finest. There, the prevailing train of thought towards politicians was not to vote. How ironic that Maggie Thatcher’s “Essex Man” knew that to vote only encouraged the bastards. So with no wish or right to get involved in any country’s politics, this is a rugby story, not a political one, albeit a very sad one. But it will show, without my hands leaving my wrists, how the well unintended actions of those in charge can have a devastating affect on your local rugby team.

In September 1991 twelve Philippine Senators voted against ratifying the Philippine Bases Agreement. What they actually did was vote to approve Sen. Wigberto Tañada’s Resolution No. 1259 of Non-Concurrence to “A Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Security.” The sugar coated title of the proposed agreement that would have allowed the US military bases to stay in the Philippines for another 10 years (until 2001).

Far be it from me to pass judgement on this decision but I think it is universally agreed that no country likes to have a foreign power’s troops & weapons on their own soil. Er, that is, apart from mine, of course, the United Kingdom.

What these twelve good men failed to realise at the time was that the two bases, namely Clark and Subic, made up 100% of Nomad’s domestic rugby fixtures. This is years before the Eagles & Ibons and other assorted poultry were born. There was a very occasional French team, when they could get the numbers, which even their Ambassador was drafted in to play for. That was until Craig Scott, our local fitness instructor, and one-time member of the British karate team executed a perfect “ippon” on His Excellency, off the back of a line out. I can still remember the scream.

Sure, we played many touring teams during the year but these fixtures were not guaranteed. Even the regular tours could be cancelled. The Royal Hong Kong Police, who had toured Manila since Abraham had been banned from touring anywhere after an unfortunate incident on the HK - Vancouver flight during their summer Canadian tour. Well, ok, several incidents, culminating in the removal of one of the touring party, let’s just call him Spiv, from the plane straight to hospital as he was so intoxicated.

Apart from regular home and away annual games, the bases were used as warm-up games especially when we had good teams touring Manila. Tamworth, Australia brought more back-up staff than we had players! But if ever the old Manila ploy of getting a team plastered and love-struck before the game, it never worked better than on this one.

Bubbles bar in Ermita opened its doors especially for the newly-arrived touring party at 3pm, unheard of in those days. I assume Tamworth must be out in the sticks as you’ve never seen eyes so wide. After an hour of what I put down to shyness on the Aussies’ part, one of them asked me: “How much is it to dance with the girls?” I could have been a millionaire.

Both bases came to Nomads to play a couple of times a year but the away games were a popular domestic mini tour. I was very fortunate that my only serious rugby injury (left knee ligaments) happened at Subic and not just because they paid the medical bill! The hospital facilities were outstanding and the pharmacy was fully stocked.

REPORTS

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

After the game when the lads came to pick me up from the base hospital, Steve Barker noticed that the pain killers they gave me had “caine” in the name. We put the case to the pharmacist that Makati Medical would not have supplies of these and extra tablets were secured, ensuring a pain-free ride for all the lads on the way back to Manila.

The trip to Clark used to follow a regular pattern. A bus from the garage on EDSA around noon, time enough for the Friday night excesses to recede. Getting on the base was no small matter, after all you were entering America. You needed your passport. One of the opposition players would have to come to the gate to get us all in and this always took hours. With the bars so close it’s amazing games were ever played.

The games were always testy to say the least. American service personnel were banned from playing Grid Iron as the Air Force didn’t need the injuries. But that didn’t stop them from playing a version of it against us. Their knowledge of the rules of rugby were shaky at best. It was never long before the first fight would break out as they would attempt to tackle you, no matter if you had the ball or not or where it was on the park.

Memories of getting blind-sided would quickly evaporate after the game as both teams hit the town. First stop would be to see Mick O’Brien (RIP) in Moondoggies, the late great boxing trainer. The singing would be led by Major Dennis “Dgill” Gill, who knew every song and composed the immortal “The Whore from Bali Hai.”

Although we knew some of the bars, Dgill and co were invaluable in keeping us out of the ghettos. Some bars were black only and there was even an Hispanic one which caused much confusion with the similarity of the local Filipinos. Possibly not the most delightful of surroundings (it’s a hundred times better now) but Angeles was remarkably cheap. An American serviceman’s pay was then extremely low and the prices around town reflected what they could afford.

There would be no rendezvous for the bus back. The driver would simply drive down Fields Avenue at a snails pace with the full weight of his body on the horn. If you made it, all well and good, if not, well, probably all well and good. Happy days.

1. IRB Laws: The tournament will be played under the Laws of the Game of Rugby Football as set down by the International Rugby Board, but subject to the amendments detailed below.

2. Teams & Seeding: There will be 32 teams in 2 Divisions with 4 Pools of 4 teams in each Division for the Saturday “round robin” games. The allocation to each Division is by seeding all teams from 1st - 32nd based upon the standard of the team and previous results in the competition. The top 16 teams will play in Division 1, the next 16 in Division 2. Each Division will be split into Pools A, B, C and D. The Tournament Officials decision on this is final and requests from teams for changes to pool allocations and seeding will not be entertained.

3. Round Robin pool games: Play on Saturday will be 3 round robin matches between teams in 8 pools.

4. Points: For ALL pool games THREE POINTS will be awarded for a win and ONE POINT awarded for a draw. ZERO POINTS will be awarded for a loss. There will be NO EXTRA TIME played to determine a winner in the pool games.

5. No Show: If, for any reason whatsoever, a team cannot field 10 players within 2 minutes of the referee and the opposing team being on the pitch, ready to commence play then that team will FORFEIT the game and a score of twenty (20) points to nil (0) will be recorded in favour of the opposition.

6. No coin toss up for pool games: The FIRST team listed will kick off from the SWIMMING POOL end of the field.

7. Coin toss for Championships: On Sunday the Captains will be called to the Officials’ Box for the coin toss at the half-time interval of the game immediately preceding theirs.

8. Sunday Championships: All teams will progress to one of the FOUR separate knockout Championships: Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield, based on ranking in each pool. The schedule of games for Sunday will be made available to all teams by 10pm on Saturday night at Nomad Sports Club, Merville; Howzat Bar, Makati; Heckle & Jeckle Bar, Makati; and Handlebar, Makati.

9. Ranking: The selection for the four Championships will be determined as follows: A. Cup Championship: Four teams. The winners

of each pool in Division 1 will progress to the Cup Championship.

B. Plate Championship: Twelve teams. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams in each pool in Division 1 will progress to the Plate Championship.

C. Bowl Championship: Eight teams. The winners of each pool in Division 2, together with the 2nd placed team in each pool will progress to the Bowl Championship.

D. Shield Championship: Eight teams. The 3rd and 4th placed teams in each pool of Division 2 will progress to the Shield Championship.

10. Ranking if points tied: If two or more teams have the SAME points, ranking will take into account (a) the difference between “Points For” and “Points Against”, (b) tries scored, (c) the toss of a coin.

11. Tied games during Sunday Championships: If there is a tie at full time in any game, then the following will apply: One period of extra time of five minutes will be played. The first team to score wins (i.e. Golden point). If still tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by playing a period of “Drop One” extra time.

12. “Drop One” extra time: Each team will restart with 9 players and the kick-off will be taken by the team which kicked-off in the first-half. Approximately every succeeding minute, at a suitable stoppage, as determined by the match referee, each team will have to drop one more player. This will continue until each team has a minimum of seven (7) players. The front row players are not permitted to be dropped and no requests for uncontested scrums will be entertained. Each team must maintain a five man scrum throughout the game. No substitutions will be permitted for any reason during “Drop One” extra time. The first team to score will win (i.e. Golden Point)

13. Playing time (Pool games): All games on Saturday will be 13 minutes in duration, one way play, with no half time. Changeover between games will be one minute.

14. Playing time (Championship games): The Quarter Finals of the Bowl and Shield will be 6 minutes each way with a 1 minute half-time. The qualifying games for the Quarter Finals of the Cup and the Quarter Finals of the Plate will be 7 minutes each way with a 1 minute half-time.The Semi Finals of the Bowl and Shield will be 8 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-time. The Semi Finals of the Plate will be 10 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-time. The Semi Finals of the Cup will be 15 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-time.The Final of the Bowl and Shield will be 8 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-time. The Final of the Plate will be 10 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-timeThe Final of the Cup and the 3rd/4th play-off in the Cup will be 15 minutes each way with a 2 minute half-time.

15. Start & Restart: By a drop kick from the centre spot. All penalties will be by a drop kick. It is the scoring side that will restart the game after a try, goal or drop goal.

16. Number of players: 10 players from a maximum squad of 15. All players must be registered before the start of a team’s first game. It is “rolling” unrestricted subs. Substitutes must enter the field of play at the half-way line and must not take the pitch until the player they are replacing has left the field of play.

17. Injuries: A team that can only field 10 or less players because of injury may borrow players for reserves from other teams but shall submit the names to the Tournament Officials at least one game prior to start of their game. Players can only be borrowed from teams seeded at the SAME LEVEL (in the case of the Shield) or LOWER (in the case of Plate, Bowl and Cup). In the spirit of the tournament a team should always start the game utilising their own squad, with borrowed players on the bench and not vice versa.

18. Squad lists for Semi Finals and Finals: At least 30 minutes prior to each SEMI-FINAL and FINAL the captains shall submit a written list of their 15–man squad to the Tournament Officials stating the original team source of each player.

INFORMATI O N

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

TOURNAMENT RULES

Players not complying with Rule 17 will not be permitted to play. Managers and Captains please note: The intent and spirit of the above rules are to avoid the “stacking” of teams in the Championships, with the best players from other teams, to the disadvantage of the opposing team. Therefore, aggrieved teams will be given the opportunity to cite other teams that are abusing the spirit of the Manila 10’s. If the Tournament Officials agree, the result will be overturned – BE WARNED!

19. Scheduling of Finals: Finals will be played strictly as determined by the tournament schedule. No requests for alterations to this schedule will be entertained for any reason.

20. Blood Bin: If there is a bleeding or open wound the player must leave the field. The replacement of the player is temporary, but if the wounded player is unable to resume playing within a maximum 10 minutes of actual time (including half-time, stoppages etc), the replacement will become permanent.

21. Scrums: A five man scrum must be maintained at all times. Second/back row players are allowed to pick up the ball and break from the scrum, provided the ball is under control at their own feet.

22. Line-outs: All line-outs must have four jumpers and one person to throw in the ball. No other players are permitted to become part of the line-out.

23. Kick-off or Restart: If a ball does not go 10 metres, goes into touch on the full or crosses the try-line and becomes a dead ball, the receiving side will be awarded a free kick at the centre spot.

24. Sin Bin (Yellow Card): Any player shown a yellow card will spend a minimum of 3 minutes actual playing time with a maximum of “the rest of the game” in the sin bin. Any player yellow carded twice in the same day will take no further part in the tournament.

25. Sent Off (Red Card): Any player sent off on either day will take no further part in the tournament.

26. Team Waiver Form: Every player in the squad must sign an understanding that none of the Tournament Officials, Nomad Sports Club, the Manila 10’s Committee or the PRFU can be held responsible for injuries etc sustained as a result of participation in the Manila 10’s Tournament and associated events. In addition, all players under the age of 18 must complete and sign an Under 18’s Waiver Form as they are competing in a senior level rugby competition. The Tournament Officials, Nomad Sports Club, the Manila 10’s Committee and the PRFU will accept no responsibility whatsoever for Teams and Players who ignore this rule.

27. The Rules of the Tournament: These, including their interpretation and any additional rules that may be required from time to time, are at the sole discretion of the Tournament Officials of the 2010 Manila 10’s, whose decision will be final and binding.

28. Tournament Officials: The designated Tournament Officials for the 2010 Manila10’s are:

1. Ross Schirmer (Tournament Director)2. David Hodges3. David Reynolds

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

A brilliant line up for our teams this year, we’ll be campaigning for the Plate and Bowl with good enough chances of keeping both trophies on home ground. With the NOMADS forward pack averaging an age of 40-odd and the back line averaging closer to 12, we have a subtle balance of strength and speed, experience and intelligence, hostility and charm.

This February, the elite members of our squad will be heading to the Bangkok 10s as a warm up to our own tournament. Having them all come back (alive) should put us in good stead for M10’s.

So this is the 2010 Nomads crew, the 21st anniversary crew, the guys who carry forward the responsibility of creating new legends for an already legendary club…

MANILA NOMADS AND CARABAOS

FORWARDS:Max ‘Chicken’ Stewart – Broken a hundred hearts, on and off the rugby pitch... The ultimate utility player – from full back to front row, he does it all!Paul ‘The Chest’ Ingram – Winning two international caps in 2009 - what he lacks in patience he more then makes up for in aggression. Take your retaliation out on them first!Paul ‘Head First’ Retzlaff – Gets at least one decent injury per game, usually from running straight at someone. Genius though. Andrew ‘Pass to me, pass to me’ Barber – Plays the rugby the Welsh way. Looks for work and punishes the opposition. Hopefully he’ll leave the golf buggy at home.Brad ‘Freddy’ Hoadley – True to the Nomad code the man loves nothing better than to smash the man and take the ball, amongst other things... Jess ‘Silent but Deadly’ Penada – Improving game after game his relentless pursuit for action has seen him be a marked man against all opposition forwards.Jerry ‘Sidestep’ Echter – a flyhalf in the body of a prop. If only there was more kicking in this game and less catching and passing…. Watch for the dummy and step! Suresh ‘The Mobile Prop’ Mustapha – Mercifully spending less time in the country. Singapore are filing for extradition, mind you he’ll take some moving.

Alex ‘The A Bomb’ Patrick – Don’t be fooled by his charming tattoos and smooth skinhead, this boy’s a killa!Dave ‘Nude Nut’ Thomas – A regular returnee, loves to compare the trafik of Manila with Jakarta, keeps threatening to actually get on the pitch. Jimbo ‘Why would I train?’ Garwood – The move north to Angeles does not seem to have dulled his aversion to training. Starting new team up north to give him some company off the pitch, not so that he can do extra training sessions. Eric ‘Relentless’ Savina – Strongest, fastest little guy in the squad and never misses an opportunity. If he doesn’t duck under your tackle then your doomed. Ricard ‘Ice it’ Basile – The youngest forward in the Nomads, though you wouldn’t guess to look at him.. Looking to avoid injuries this year, if so he’ll be doing some damage.Paulo ‘The Big O’ Ocampo – One to watch! Missed last year due to stomach bug, opposition poisoned the lasagne. Smart move. John ‘Dr. Lineout’ Munro – Winning his first international caps in 2009, he carries a huge reputation that’ll make most tremble.Dave ‘The Biggest Chest in the West’ Feeney – Don’t trust his cockney charm; the former barrow boy from London claims to have a handoff to rival even Steve Bunce. BUNCE!Ryan ‘Size 15’ Burough – Another towering presence in the squad. Will look to do some damage with those big boots of his.

Sean ‘My Try’ Redpath – Ex Makati Chiefs player has already made his mark this year by outpacing the youngsters and diving on a chip ahead that crowned a superb comeback.Phil ‘Chip Ahead’ Gittus – Seen sense and given up the refereeing to cause his former colleagues a world of hassle. Loving the return, if only the officials felt the same way.James ‘Inspector Gadget’ Garraway – Can score from anywhere within the 22, if only by reaching over the opposition and placing the ball in the try zone. Not bad at lineouts either… Rob ‘The Bulldog’ Kesterton – Smash the man, grab the ball – that’s what he lives for.Romain ‘The Widow Maker’ Barberis – With no sign of letting up the big guy looks to have another fifteen M10’s

in him. Just got to see if the rest of us can keep up…

BACKS:Ian ‘The Carabao’ Taylor – The wise man of the backline, has opted out of training and into more concentrated drinking. Playing better than ever. Sam ‘Speed kills’ Chittick – Don’t let the smile fool you, this mentalist is will

tear you up, world of doom. Off the pitch he’ll be the one

in a sarong and sombrero..Arnaud ‘Revenge’ Cauchois

– Godfather of the French mafia, has a sidestep as unforgiving as

his character. Sammy ‘Not the Face’ Fogg –

Slowly climbed up the Nomads ladder to cement

his place as the super sub. Has been with us for 6 months

now and is yet to pass the ball, but more often then not he ends up

scoring. Expect something big.Theo ‘Dances Funny’ Ashton – Never say die attitude, always looking to get involved, intense work rate – and that’s just when he’s chatting up the ladies.. Bobby ‘Smash and Grab’ Pitts –Eating an average of 2 chickens a day has done the trick, we are now in possession of a monster, but a monster that can kick, pass, tackle and run in some spectacular scores. Lucky Nomads!Kevin ‘Bangkok’ Santos – Our U20s international won three caps last year. Gone away to refine his skills in Bangkok. Does wear headgear out on the wing, we’ll forgive him tho.. Eugene ‘Sister’ Marsters – Our returning international. Learnt everything he knows about rugby from his 4 sisters, so once you’ve seen him play you’ll know that you don’t

mess with him, or them. Max ‘French-flyer’ Fournier – A welcome member of the French speedsters. Give him an inch and he’ll take 5 points..Flo ‘Le Blur’ Levasque – The fastest man in the Philippines. His first M10’s is sure to be memorable.Craig ‘Thriller’ Wislang – promising to turn up and play, though keeps pulling heartstrings just before big games. You’ll figure out his nickname if he does show up, or if you google him. Danny ‘Dangalang’ Williams – A Big presence, literally. I tell you, when he gets knocked down, he gets straight back up you again. There ain’t nothing gonna keep him down. Excellent drop kicker, fearless tackler, and his Gareth-Thomasesque running style make him an indispensible member of the team. CEBU DRAGONSTHE CEBU DRAGONS are in their 5th year and going strong. Long tagged as the next best team in the Philippines, the boys are determined this year to show everyone exactly what they can do and take home the silverware. This year the club has combined the best of the local Black Dragons and the Expat Low-Flying Dragons into a formidable team with high hopes.A pretty relaxed group of blokes off the field, spoilt by the Cebuano lifestyle of cheap beer, good girls and gorgeous beaches (or some variation of that statement), the Dragons will be looking to make as big a statement on the pitch

as they do at the bar this year in their 4th visit to the Manila 10’s.Cebu will also host the Cebu 10’s every April, and with cheap flights from almost all major Asian hubs, you know it makes sense to come and sample the Cebuano lifestyle for yourself. For more information on the tournament

contact Damien Allison, the Clubs Secretariat at [email protected], or visit the club website at www.cebu10srugby.info.

Dedicated to developing the game of rugby amongst the local Philippine population, the Cebu City Rugby Football Club would like to introduce the latest addition to its family.

THE KOMODO DRAGONS were created to enable more and more local lads to experience the spectacle that is the Manila 10’s and to fall

in love with the game of rugby.Comprised entirely of Filipinos, most of which had never seen a rugby ball

until 2 years ago, The Komodos will be looking to upset a few of the more fancied teams. Despite still trying to grasp all the nuances (and rules) of the

game they play in heaven, the lads make up for the lack of rugby knowledge with raw talent and pure determination, and aim to show some of the naysayers out there

that rugby in the Philippines definitely has a future in local players.

We want to enjoy Rugby and the tournament together with all Rugby men and women!!

THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEAM was the brainchild

of the Alabang Eagles President Mr. Randell Carman who saw the need to not only have a

National Team that is comprised of a combination of overseas and local Filipino players, but to also have a locally based National development team, that trains and plays to help prepare local players for the step up to National Team duties. The Philippine National Development Squad holds trainings at the Philsports Ultra Stadium every Monday and Wednesday from 6 - 8pm and have been training together for the last six weeks. The team has played in one round of the PRFU 10’s league losing to the Manila Hapons and this year’s Manila 10’s will be their first official tournament. With a cross section of beginners combined with some local club players the Development Team are well placed in the Shield Division and are intent on making an impression by winning at their first Manila 10’s tournament.

The Arabian Potbellies support the Teenage Cancer Charity “Emma’s Bubble Trust” which provides grief counseling to teenagers and parents of teenagers with terminal cancer together with the Sheik Rashid Children’s Hospital in Dubai.

Following a year of no competative rugby, CAPE THE BLACK WATCH, look forward to what promises to be a very challenging 2010 Manilia 10’s competition. As always we hope to bring some entertaining rugby to the tournament and hope to make a bid for the title come sunday. The team, as has become usual over recent years has been cobbled together at the last minute bringing many new players to their first tournament. Last summer saw the team deployed on Operational Service in Afghanistan with little opportunity to throw a ball about.

So who are The Black Watch Rugby Club? We are all serving Officers and Soldiers in The Black Watch 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3SCOTS), currently based at Fort George Inverness. Many of our players are Fijian Jocks who are serving in the British Army with The Black Watch 3 SCOTS. We would like to thank our sponsors CAPE without whos support we would not be here today.

CIS LARRIKINS

The LARRIKINS with a decade now under their belts, are the team everyone is out to beat – DEFENDING HOLDERS OF THE MANILA 10’s CUP. Retaining the CUP again this year will be tough, but as the team has shown in the past, they are not shirkers. So much so that the C/S Larrikins will be hoping to meet the “Black Watch” en route through either their league or the knockout section of the tournament – they are one of the last hurdles to be overcome in Manila after having only drawn with them last year.

In previous years, the C/S Larrikins have had Rory Underwood, David Campese, Jeremy Paul, Nick Farr-Jones, John Bentley, Joel Stransky, Dan Crowley, Gavin Hastings, Elton Flatley, Frano Botica, Frank Bunce, Matt Phillips and Justin Sampson don the now famous (infamous??)

C/S Larrikins’ jersey. So, in keeping with tradition, legends players who have been invited in 2010 are: Joe Roff (former Wallaby legend); Matt Phillips (Kiwi/Italian with a super hero jaw); Karl Te Nana (former All Black Sevens legend) Over the Tournament weekend, the Corporate Tent will again be in operation with the Barbie cranked up with sausage sizzlers sizzling and amber and light refreshments flowing (Many thanks to Zoe Ames, Brian Parsons and Meian Martel in advance).

Platinum sponsors will again be C/S ASIA PACIFIC with Paul “Paffy” Paffet (Regional Director for C/S

Group) backing the team. C/S Group specializes in manufacturing and

supply of construction materials. Their website is www.c-sgroup.

com.If one Platinum sponsor was not enough, Masbate Gold Project has joined the fold. Long time Philippine resident & President, Johan Raadsma saw the light & has joined the mighty C/S Larrikins. So,

welcome to Johan and his team from the Masbate

Gold Project.Coach Phil Naughton and

Captain David Clark will again be heading up the charge for the

C/S Larrikins. The composition of the team is mainly from the Arabian

Who doesn’t seem to recall his ‘try of the tournament’ efforts from last year) and ‘wheels’

Charlie Keenan (Otherwise known as Hugh, he’ll be pitching from slightly further a field, Scotland). Fronting up from our Filipino contingent will be ‘superstar’ Derek Ramsay (terribly ugly chap, but the girls love him).

THE FLYING ELVISES

THE FLYING ELVISES are in town from the far flung corners of the world! The Manila 10’s 2010 is always high on our priority list and as potentially a farewell tour for many of the old guard who are going soft, we aim to send these wankers off with a big bang .Farewells being farewells, these tossers will have to take some time off from rugby to say good bye to the poor lasses they intend to abandon after all these years of “moral” support.

We aim to do well this year as we are entering possibly our final competition to find a way to justify to ourselves why we bother getting the boots out of the cupboard and taking up golf fulltime (and changing diapers for some!) I won’t emphasize too much on how good we are as nobody really cares anyway. All I can tell you is that we excel in convincing the fairest that we are indeed top athletes and tournament favorites!See you at the bar!Rock on!

The FLYING KUKRIS RFC is a touring rugby club which has been in existence since the mid 1980s. The club was initially formed in Hong Kong and was comprised of British Army Officers and soldiers from the Garrison Gurkha Battalions as well as the detachments/ flights of Army Air Corps present in Hong Kong. Before withdrawal from Hong Kong in 1997, the club participated in domestic leagues in the territories, as well as annual 10-a-side and 7-a-side tournaments throughout SE Asia. In 1986 for example, the club won the inaugural Manila 10’s. As a result of that victory and participation across the region, the club developed (and still has) a fine reputation as one which plays hard and tours well. After the closure of Hong Kong both the Gurkha Battalions and the Army Air Corps re-located to Brunei.

THE FLYING KUKRIS RFC

Now the Second Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) are recently back in Brunei having recently returned from an operational tour in Afghanistan. With membership to the Club thriving The Flying Kukris are participating in Rugby tournaments around SE Asia with Bali and Singapore being their most recent destinations. The team put up some very strong performances both on and off the pitch and are looking forward to a lot more!

French Asian Barbarians

The FRENCH ASIAN BARBARIANS are essentially, emphatically... French. They speak English with the accent francais, eat the unbeatable French baguette, delicious cheeses and charcuterie, drink Ricard and wines from Bordeaux, Bourgogne and Languedoc, they like conspiscuous “creatures”, dream to pummel all English-speaking teams in the world especially the English ones, they are playing rugby with this unpredictable flair that might explain their unpredictable results. They come from Saigon, Hanoi, Bangkok, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Manila, Delhi and even Paris. They also accept Argentines and Spaniards because

after all we are all latin guys ! They are remarkably organised : “who do we play ?”, “who is playing ?”, “ did someone bring

a ball ?”, “is that a 15 a side or a 10 a side tournament ?”, “what’s your name again ?”, “where is the f**king pitch bordel de merde ?” One thing for sure they always win the third “mi-temps” in various places downtown where they have recruited long time ago the best cheerleaders in all Asia. Here they come again, for the fifth time (or maybe the sixth time, who knows ?, the mighty FABs...

GUAM BARBARIANS

It is the first tour for the GUAM BARBARIANS. The team is made up of players from the 3 Rugby Clubs on Guam, Para Todu Rugby Club, Guam Rugby and the Southern Rugby Club. This year

will be the 4th year in a row that a team from Guam will be playing in the Manila 10’s. It should consist of some of Guam National Team players, Guam based Expats and some friends from the states.

However, we will not know who is on the team until kickoff on Saturday. No doubt, whoever shows up and plays will keep the tradition of hard hitting and freewheeling play that has become a trademark of Guam Rugby.See you on the pitch.

KOWLOON 1 & 2

The founding members of KOWLOON RFC, started playing together a few years before the club was officially formulated, under the guise of a YMCA Rugby Team, however it was felt, by the YMCA committee, that the post rugby playing behaviour was not compatible with the lofty ideals of a Youth Christian Association and so in 1976 Kowloon Rugby Football Club was founded.

The fortunes of Kowloon have waxed and waned over the years, however after a few years in the doldrums post handover, the playing strength and ambition has returned under the direction of Chairman Anson Bailey.inProjects Kowloon RFC currently consist of four senior men’s teams, one women’s team, one development team and a netball section as well as two affiliated mini clubs and one colts club, together consisting of more that 200 potential recruits in the years to come. With a home ground now at Kings Park and a player-coach, Joe Shaw, a former member of England’s all conquering sevens team, newly arrived from Newcastle Falcons, inProjects Kowloon have a two year plan beginning season 2009/10 to compete for honours at the highest level in Hong Kong, whilst at the same time regaining their place as Hong Kong’s most social team.Kowloon returns to the Manila 10s after their absence in 2009.

HK SCORPIONS

NSW CROWSThe NSW CROWS in 2010 are a back

to basics rugby team.

A review of the 2009 tour found that no matter how much success you have on

the pitch (Kowloon 10’s champions 2009) it the off-field & post match shenanigans that catch up

on you. We are ashamed and disgusted to have to announce that last year one amongst us did not drink on

tour. A most heinous crime. Heinous, heinous, heinous.

In 2010 we will make up for that grave error by selecting mature, experienced drinkers who will rise to the challenge of drinking themselves to the depths of depravity and enjoying themselves while doing it. While our on-field effectiveness may be impacted by this selective approach we believe that the Rugby Skills/Boozing Skills balance is being addressed correctly with 40mins of pitch time expected against 4 days of boozing.

ABOUT USThe Crows are an invitational touring team who attract players from all over the world but this year we will mostly be Pom’s, a Paddy and a few Colonial’s (S’tralians). This mix will ensure plenty of work for the ref’s whistle and plenty of colourful responses as we puff and pant around the paddock.

This year is “Round Three” for a few Crows in regards the Manila Comp. Rob “Red Lightning” Meggison, Tom “Roadkill’ Ahearne and John “Funky Feet” Farrell. The rest of the murder of Crows (Interesting Fact - Collective term for a group of crows is Murder of Crows – one for the Trivia buffs) are the choice of lasts years tourists – some tall - some small - some fat – some fatter, but all at the peak of their drinking and general mayhem abilities and naturally a few tour virgins to entertain the posse. 2010 also sees a return of Chris “Pikey” Perkins who is restricted to “Waterboy” duties due to travelling to the 2007 Manila Comp with an untreated broken leg – Now there was commitment – He was labelled Makati’s Favourite son that faithful weekend and even allowed some of the more attentive girls to touch his discoloured stump and play with his “crutches” - but that’s all in the past.

This year the team looks forward to good rugby, great craic & gallons of San Miguel while enjoying the great weekend of entertainment organised by the Nomads.

SEOUL SURVIVORS RFC

THE SEOUL SURVIVORS were forged in the deepest regions of South Korea sometime in the mythical time of 1978. As a club they have been one of the longest participating teams in the Manila 10’s and return each year hungry for more. There are two prime factors that motivate the Survivors to return year after year: the ever-gnawing hunger in their bellies to improve upon last year’s performance and the desire to play rugby on real grass.Motivated and lead (astray) by the veteran duo of ‘The Great Dictator’ Ted Gray and ‘The Warhorse’ Brian Bruckman, the Survivors will look to improve on their 2009 showing by turning up with more than one substitute and not misplacing any

newbies. Last year, the boys went down bravely to the favored Black Watch team in a game that is still told around the pub and that grows more legendary with each telling. The past year saw the team grow into a more organized and professional team kicking off the 2010 season with a training session under legendary All Black John Kirwan. The Survivors will be using all the knowledge and cunning of the ‘Great Triumvirate’ – Ted Gray, Brian Bruckman and John Kirwan – to ensure sweet victory on and off the field in 2010.

This year is the fourth time we attend this competition. We are very happy arrive at Manila to participate in this activity once more. We obtained a good result in 2007.This year is our club celebrates its 44th year -- we are also Taiwan’s first rugby club. The expectation is we will have a good showing in March in Manila.

STOKE CLASSICS

This will be our 6th visit to the Manila 10’s in 6 consecutive years. Every year the same ole fellas are a year older (still playing) & we bring some new fast & fit young players, who can’t keep up the passé

when it comes to drinking all night & playing rugby in the heat of the day, hence the reason the Classics have struggled to win a game over the last couple of years. Last year after Saturday’s efforts we thought we

had been playing cricket, we were 132 points against us to NIL… never mind, it’s all about the Rugby, that’s why we are here!Usually we are the 1st team to arrive in Manila for the week-end & the last to leave, we are pretty well known in town in the pubs for enjoying a beer or 6. I imagine this year will be no different! We would like to thank Enza, PowerAde & the Mainland Foundation for their continued support over the years. Our Aim for 2010 is to win a game or two this year, it could be against you & then I guess we will have a beer or six to celebrate.Thanx,Nabby(coach, manager, front row)

Sick of crammed trains, tiny toilets, and pizza with corn and mayonnaise as toppings, the TOKYO GAIJIN are making their yearly sojourn to Manila to escape reality and live like the demigods they were suppose to be. Oh yeah, and play rugby too. .at some tournament I think…yeah, that’s right!, the Nomad’s Manila 10s!This years touring side was composed of the finest players in the Tokyo Area, until the economic crisis sent all the bankers back home and left us with leftovers. So, this is now the best squad of English teachers, IT professionals, consultants, ninjas, and club host in Tokyo that their wives would allow to go…that happen to play rugby.

Some old faces, some new faces, but no matter, truth be told, none of us know what the Hell we’re doing! We’ll figure it all out once we get here!Sincere thanks to our sponsors, Oakwood, for providing the tour kit and helping make this year’s tour extra memorable.

VALLEY GRIFFINSThe great British Lions Coach Sir Ian McGeechan once said that being a Lion was special – that you’d see a fellow Lion across the street 30 yrs from now and it would just take one look – a nod to acknowledge that special bond built and shared on tour – he could quite easily have been talking about the Pao Ma Dei Barbarians from VALLEY RFC such is the folklore surrounding this most earnest of touring sides. For the last few years Valley has been represented by their Div 5 team The Mighty Griffs – boasting 11 nationalities,

one beard, obvious hair loss, a prison sentence for armed robbery (since overturned) 4 STDs and 3 different genders between them. In recent times we have faired much better off the field than on it – perhaps there is a connection…This year we have gone for critical mass bringing 30+ players although there is still a lack of critical skills such as catching, running and tackling. We can, however, offer the services of our team lawyers for run ins with the law, our pastor for quickie marriages / divorces and our doctor for emergency shots...Spotting our tour virgins will probably be quite easy as they will have received the customary fine of consuming 2 Viagra at breakfast. It may be a little more difficult to tell us apart in the evening.

Our thanks, as ever, go to the Nomads for providing the flimsy cover story of a rugby tournament for us to come down to Manila and quite literally shake our thangs in the company of so many of the finest social touring sides in Asia and Football Club.

Made up predominantly of players from the Hong Kong league our intention is to have a ringer or two to add to the flair of the team.We are as a team new to the Asian rugby touring circuit with the inaugural Wavewearers team competing in the Bali 10’s in October taking home the plate in extra time. We do however have a slightly more competitive team for manila and hope to fair better than Bali.We are blessed to have Tsunami as our kit supplier and hope to add some silverware to the Tsunami office cabinet to justify Andy Chambers giving us kit at ridiculously low prices( plug ,plug). We also would like to thank CBRE for their contribution as a sponsor as well.

Looking forward to a great weekend on and off the pitch as only the Manila 10s knows how to

provide.Players to look out for are Jono

Bowman, Ian Ridgway, Hone ‘The HITMAN’ Patrick and of course Gazza the ‘STICKMAN’ Hill. The full team had not been confirmed prior to printing but we do hope to bring more than 4 players.

8 MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of Asian rugby’s most colourful characters

Nicholas ‘Nick’ Villeperieux.Nick passed away on the morning of February 20th 2010 in the Philippines due to thyroid cancer at the age of 52.

Nick Villeperieux, the only child of Harry and Mary Villeperieux was born in Kent, England on November 15th 1957. He completed a master’s degree in education in London before accepting a teaching post in Singapore in January 1995.

It was in Singapore that he met his wife of 14 years Judy and they married in April 1996. Later that year the newlyweds relocated to Hong Kong, where they were to spend ten happy years with Nick holding the position of Head of I.T. at South Island School.

In 2007 after a brief stay in England, Nick was appointed Headmaster at an international school in the Philippines where he worked until 2009.

On first impression Nick looked like a bit of a rough customer, but that veneer thinly masked a man with a ready smile, a quick wit and a big heart. His love of the game and willingness to bring along less experienced players was most apparent in the home country of wife Judy, the Philippines. Nick at one time or another represented every club in the country and was universally liked and admired by one and all.

An adventurer by nature, Nick loved to travel, especially cycling in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. He was an avid chess player, a fan of computer games, a collector of antique furniture and a lover of animals.

The entire Asian rugby community has lost a one off personality and a man with a true Corinthian spirit.

IN MEMORY OF NICK VILLEPERIEUX

Nick was the founder of the Hong Kong based, non-league playing, touring rugby club the Pot Bellied Pigs, and was responsible for many of the shocking designs and colour schemes sported by this team at tournaments throughout the region and further afield.

Easily identified by his mop of variously coloured hair, Nick’s thirst for playing time was legendary. Not satisfied with merely representing whichever club he happened to be on tour with, he would also turn out for each and every club that was short of players and it would not be unusual for him to represent half a dozen teams in a day. Although more at home in the pack, he was also none too bothered in which capacity

he was asked to play and would give his all for the cause, whatever the team or the occasion.

THE POT BELLIED PIGS: PUTTING MAGIC BACK INTO RUGBY

THE POT BELLIED PIGS PROUDLY PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE IN MANILA ON 20 AND 21 MARCH 2010 OF THE CAST OF

Hammy Porker and the Marshy Mallows Hamgreed, the oafish, bumbling

giant dwarf presents his half-brother which introduces a sinister twist to his very sordid family history. Find out these unsavoury details this weekend when key members of the cast will be present for two days only in Manila on 20 and 21 March 2010.

Always Grumblesmore invokes a patronus charm to protect his team

during a pigditch game. Was he really killed in the last episode?

Expect another appearance: he’s 150 years old and hard to finish off.

Hammy, the obnoxious teenager has just turned a member of the opposition into a midget. Watch out for his wand – it can get anywhere!

New characters, the evil twin goblins, Slobby and Globby, introduce an element of comedy to the production as they try their skills at pigditch with comically woeful results.

The wimpy Won Weasily being brought down to earth in a game of

pigditch. Will he mange to open the legs of the ice queen Hereyesonme

or will the ginger fail? Don’t miss the full fumbling details. In Hollywood, Won is Chairman of the GROGTLE

Society (Get Rid of Gingers Through Legal Euthanasia). We suspect his

future acting career is self limiting!

Hereyesonme, a teenage vamp, enjoys a potions class. See how she has changed from an innocent schoolgirl into an object of lust and desire for her spotty, youthful team mates.

As ever, the Chairman

So, a quick mention f

and what they

bring to the tourname

Clair Barberis – Merchandise: Clair provides a touch of glamour to the Committee and designs, sources and delivers the legendary M10’s merchandise for your compulsory purchase over the weekend ☺

Richard Radier –

Referees☺ Management:

Richard has done a

great job in bringing

together refs from

and then allocating t

appropriate level within the

tournament. 2009 equated to 12

happy refs – that must

be a first

Phil Gittus – Team & Schedule: The most thankless of tasks, so I shall thank him! Phil brings 32 teams together and engineers a draw that will hopefully suit all. Impossible to get 32 teams entirely happy all the time, but this man gets as close as is humanly possible.

MANILA 10’s INTERNATIONAL RUGBY FESTIVAL

THANK YOU’s

It is fitting that this official programme should close with a note of thanks to those people that make this tournament viable – our sponsors. We continue to make the Manila 10’s free to spectators – surely unique for a quality tournament such as this – and that can only be achieved with the fantastic support we get from our sponsors. Our title sponsor for the fifth year is CAPE – many thanks to Mike Harding, Jen San Pedro and their outstanding team. Our other major sponsors in the stands are C/S LARRIKINS (Michael Templeton), CRAFT (Hamish Moore and Peter “Whistler” Lawrence), JOOLS CABARET (Tony), SINCLAIR JAMES (Mike Whiting), HMR (Randell Carman), OAKWOOD (Brian Connelly), PASIG PENGUINS (Brad Hannam) and OVERGAARD (John Bradley) – thanks to you all; we are sure that you will bring much colour and atmosphere to the tournament!James du Vivier at FORTH & TAY is the official wine sponsor through Hardy’s – be sure to indulge in his products!A special mention must go to the team at RMDK who have picked up where Steve Phillips left off. RMDK are the outfit that construct the sponsor and team stands that bring a real “stadium” atmosphere to Nomads over the weekend. Steve has moved on, but will be back for the weekend, so a big thanks to Rik Borger, Tony Sutton and their crew for keeping this fine tradition going.Photo credits go to Gareth Jones, David Hodges, Ruben Tecson, Bogee Romero, and the parents of the M0’s Organising Committee. To everyone who supports the tournament – thank you – you are all invaluable.
